Hi, I'm considering purchasing an A100 as a developmental tool for my twin 3 year olds. I would probably put a bunch of kids stuff on it and run it inside the Kids Mode app.
Would you say the A100 is a good choice for this purpose? Is there a better choice?
I think it is. I let my 3 year old daughter play fruit ninja and anger birds all the time. Its the perfect size to sit in her lap while shes on the couch.
How sturdy is the A100?

IMO a100 is good but may be overkill. Why not just a really cheap one like a coby or an off brand. I've seen some go for less than $100 retail.
noo
i suggest not it is not worth it to give a 300 dollar honeycomb tablet that can be upgraded to ics to a 3 year old
a wasted investment

It's a pretty tough little tablet so long as its not thrown across the room. I've dropped mine quite a few times and it hasn't broken yet. The screen is gorilla glass, scratch resistant, takes some force to crack. When combining this tablet with kids, I'd say the most you have to worry about is how much you'll have to clean the screen. I work as a barber and use my a100 to keep kids occupied while I cut their hair.

Cost will be $230 new or $200 used. Their current tablet is a Xoom and this will be tablet #2 so they don't have to fight over the Xoom. As someone who works in the financial industry I have to ask, do you really consider any tablet, phone or other piece of electronics an investment?

Well without a calculator you'd be doing all your financial analysis on paper... which would take so much longer. Without communication electronics you'd be running around much more wasting that precious time trying to get a very easy question answered when you could have just called up that person... or to give you more of an advantage let's say you could use snail mail via horse... since vehicles have some form electronics in them. But seriously, try to do your job, for one week, without ANY form of electronics along side someone that is using them. Also, the consumer electronics can be used as productive tools if that's what you use them for. All depends on the motivation and mentality of the user. In the right hands, a hammer can build a house... in the wrong hands it's being only used to open beers. For those who use consumer electronics for entertainment... best argument I can make for them is that it's it helps with stress management and therefore an investment on their mental well-being.
Hope that gives you something to think about. Looking forward to your response.

The a100 is a great tablet! But for a 3 year old....I think that maybe some special learning tablet like a 'leap pad' or 'leapfrog' would be better. Honestly, I dont think a 3 year old should have a tablet just yet. Their eyes are still developing....It just doesnt seem right to me.

+1 my son has a vtech innotab. looks like daddies but he actually learns instead of just drawing on daddies tablet. not to mention its way more rugged and costs 79.99. way better tool for teaching your kids. hes only 18 months but answers super simple math questions and colors like a champ haha. the leappad is also great...it was my second choice.

It may be a waste of money to people who dont have money to just buy one. But if you can afford to get one for yoir kid then go for it. I have always owned and loved android devices since the g1. I always got carrier branded devices and switch every so often. I thought it would make sense to grab a gsm nexus so I started researching, and boy did I research. I thought that the price of a gnex from google is not bad and i had enought money to get one, but for whatever reason i figured i'd check ebay, but they sell for the same or more used. so I checked craigslist- on payday i saw what looked like a great deal... new gnex with extra battery 300, so i contacted the dude and met up about 40 minutes drive. the phone was in new condition there was the extra battery and vanilla ics, tried it made a call so i took it. while driving away i started playing with it.. i went to the camera app, got a message stating to insert sd card, i was like wth a gnex with an sd card. then i got a call the there was a flashing led at the bottom. i got home and examined it well, turns out its a fake ( my fingernail can operate the capacitve sereen) it looks so damn real... now im screwed out of 300 bux. I was so upset i went to google and got a new one, so I should have it soon... learnt my lesson well.- i really didnt think that fake phones existed and damn they did a great job... i think ill just give it to my son- he will by happy to have it
Pics or it didn't happen LOL. Can we see it? Wanna see how good of a "job" they did.

Yeah that's a fake. The site even looks like amazon, with the way it's laid out and even some of the graphics.
This is why I like buying things eBay over CraigsList. eBay has gone to great lengths to protect buyers. With that being said it is such a pain any more to sell things on eBay (major hassle listing/shipping items, excessive fees, picky buyers) which is why I usually won't sell things on eBay any more.
In your case though you got a fake phone, which may have been hard to tell when you bought it but hypothetically if it were a Verizon phone for example it could have been completely real but may have been stolen and had a bad ESN. Even then though I believe you can check with the carrier to see if the ESN is clean. I guess what it boils down to is you just have to be very cautious whenever buying something from an 'un-trusted' source.
On a side note, I just received my Verizon Nexus that I bought on eBay for $240. This thing was listed at 'Used' but it is seriously in like new condition, not a scratch or scuff on it (and it came with a nice case). I am absolutely loving the phone so far. Only thing I don't like is that I didn't upgrade to it sooner.

I'll just get a simple mobile sim and give it to my kid, so its not a total loss, he will be happy with it. I'm just amazed of what a good job they did with it. and the fingernail test is how I narrowed it down - compared it to my girl's SG2. Im getting withdrawals waiting for the real phone to ship from google.

every us company does this
If only it stopped at just using children. The things ive had to deal with and report from low quality chinese manufacturers is disgusting. My company is currently looking at switching to american manufacturing for our products because of crap like this. The hard part is finding a cost effective way to not go out of business with increased costs :/
also if youve ever had to deal with them its sick. you go there and tell them what they are doing wrong and need to change and they do so, and as soon as youre out of their country they go back to what they were doing and now just keep it even more secret.
dont be so quick to judge apple and samsung or any other manufacturer for that matter. very little is changable as you would want to hope. Labor and quality and safety regulations in these areas are about the level of Oliver Twist. A lot of these 'reports' throw in big name companies just to draw attention of the public.

Sigh. Very few people know that even though china is well well over 1 billion people, there are more jobs available than people to fill those positions. That is why we hear about these kinds of work conditions. A lot of the blame falls on us, the consumer. Yeah i said it. It is just like countries that produce drugs like cocaine because they can because their is a high demand. And another thing that might be hard to believe but isn't if you think about it, is the fact that a lot of places like those that make synthetic drugs or whatever, have no idea what they're making and what for. You just show up, do as much as you can, and hope you get paid, or can graduate from school, or your family doesn't get killed or just plain ole hope i don't go hungry today. Reality folks. When keepin' it real goes wrong.
will key lime pie add another row of apps to my homescreen?
If there were more jobs than people, work conditions would be better.....to attract more workers.
I spent the first 7 years of my career working for electronics manufacturers, five years at an Android phone manufacturer, and two years at a cell phone component supplier (iPhone, and all high end Android phones). I've been to China and been inside the factories where the phones and components are made.
Most people would be amazed at these places....

Why is the value of the GNex depreciating so quickly?
I already know Apple products hang on to their value much better. This is evident based on the price of 2nd hand iPhones. Even compared other older 4G Android phones... it's worth more than the GNex (using Swappa as rough estimate).
Edit: disregard, I have a GSM model.
My opinion: I don't care, I don't plan on selling. Have a perfectly working device in my hand right now.
But I guess it's just how technology (and mobile devices on the very top of it) is.

I understand how you feel about the iPhone.. But to be honest there is nothing a phone built in July 2010 can do well. I'm sorry but someone paying $200+ for a iPhone 4 is retarded.
But Android us a two fold issue, one being they constantly build something better 4 months later, and Android hits a cheaper price point. The Galaxy Nexus being sold brand new unlocked for $350 was awesome, but dented retail. On the flip side though my wife's RAZR 32gb is worth about $150 because since then there has been the RAZR Maxx, RAZR in a million colors, RAZR HD, RAZR HD MAXX. They kinda kill themselves. Phones are like computers or cars, buy it but don't expect a large return for the most part.

You guys are wrong. It really depends on what you plan to do with the phone. If you like to get a new phone relatively often.. Wouldn't you rather have the phone maintain its value better so you can sell it and move on to the next greatest thing. But if you are those that will use a phone till it dies, then obviously this does not apply to you. So no, I don't see it as an investment. But this does factor into how I budget for future phones.
Ultimately, it depends on your long term plans.

Then again I said that with my fascinate but even still, I never ended up needing g a replacement. It's much nicer to not feel like I'm required to baby something because of its dollar value.

And why or why not.
I wouldn't buy the G2, because it'll be way too soon for me to buy a new phone, but when my upgrade rolls around I'll certainly consider another Optimus phone. So far I've had the Optimus S and the Optimus G, two fantastic phones. The S can actually run jellybean fairly smoothly, it's amazing.

LG came from dirt phone after dirt phone and surprised us all with the optimus G. Surprised everyone and did it with style. All anyone could talk about was galaxy s3 this evo lte that, razr, one x, ect. Then this phone came out. Sh!t all over the compition and even mocked samsung with their "4" billboard. The ONLY thing keeping this device from being any more popular is the fact that they have fail so many times before with previous devices.
Now coming out with a device to compete with the note series and another G to keep up with the one and s4 even though they don't have to. The optimus G is still just as good as the high end phones coming out today. They are doing this to keep their name fresh and to hopefully one day soon give people more of a choice when going to upgrade rather than depending on the reps to push their stuff.

LG could be the next Samsung. Before the s1, they made crap devices, such as the moment. The s1 and s2 were good, but not a household name. Then comes the s3 and its incessant advertising and people think that just because they advertise that it's the best phone, so since HTC is a smaller company, and has a lower budget, they are getting screwed despite having higher quality products. Oh how the tables have turned since the evo. No one had heard of a galaxy, it wasn't even offered as that on carriers. The only phones sprint advertised were the evo line, until the s3.

Just curious, what made you decide on this rather than the One or S4?
Well unforeseen circumstances forced me to buy a phone outright off contract . So at first I asked about the galaxy s4 and the Sprint rep said that they could not sell it off contract... something about because it has a SIM card :what: BUT...I still have an upgrade coming a little later, probably around the time the Galaxy Note 3 is out and what ever else comes out by then.

No. The camera on this phone is not very good. Also there is not enough devs working on this phone. The Galaxy phones have awesome devs working on every tiny thing.

I agree not as much development but how much do we really need we have the main AOSP ROMs with a few minor bugs, we have tweaked stock all we really need is sense 5 which is coming soon. The camera is garbage in low light situations but in good lighting it is nice.

I think there is only a 50 dollar difference between the phones (One S4 and This one) but I was pushing it money wise getting this lol

When is your upgrade? If it's within 6 months then it would have been a lot cheaper to pay the early upgrade fee and got an s4 or one than to pay outright

I definitely would, but I would like to see one with 64GB internal or better yet, a microSD slot. I find myself constantly moving stuff off from my phone to computer to make space (photos, videos, backups).
Nope. I'm in fact in the process of getting rid every phone I've been on since the Photon (LGOG included) and going back to the Photon or the Atrix. Every one of them has been a downgrade and a waste of silicon in my eyes.

And most of those "ROMs" are themes and copycat tweaks distributed as ROMs. So the Galaxy phones have a couple true ROMs and a ton of themes pretending to be ROMs.

By all means you guys are more then welcome to set up to the plate. Sorry there is a lack of dev support for this phone, but the people have worked on this phone have worked very hard. You have no idea. We put in 3 months or so into getting you guys working Aosp. Getting everything working was a total pain in the ass. LGs implementation of EFS was a night mare to get passed, but we came up with a good solution. We probably lost 10 phones or so before we figured it out. I know I personally had two replacements. So be happy for what you have. I know for a fact all of the roms in the original dev section are working and stable. I was actually thinking to myself yesterday that I am actually starting to like this this phone (even though it has been a total ***** to me through the entire process).
If you get a chance. Thank Shelnutt2, thecubed, Autoprime, dvxher and Synergy when you get a chance. Also, Mike_77, Redmk, chachin, Interloper, ilkinansr92 and last but not least my favorite tester Theo2889. Without these guys none of this would ever of happened.

Guys like this are a big reason I WOULD buy another Optimus.
We may not have a million ROMs like the SIII, but I have maintained from day one that this is a good thing for us. Our ROMs are stable, functional, and well supported. The Quality v Quantity theory. The devs that we have are committed and really produce some great work. Even builds that have been labeled as "unstable", in my experience, have been pretty danged stable.
Additionally, I think that LG really knocked it out of the park with the hardware on this phone. I would love to see an SD card slot, but haven't really had need for one thanks to cloud services, I would just like the option. I would like to see a better sensor on the camera, but let's be honest, if you want glamour shots you should buy a camera, not a phone. Other than that, I literally have no complaints about this Optimus G and I go so far as to say that it is the best phone I have owned to date. I cannot wait to see what it does when they finally deploy LTE in Denver, but that's sprints problem.
