[Q] A100 a good choice for 3 year olds? - Acer Iconia Tab A100

Hi, I'm considering purchasing an A100 as a developmental tool for my twin 3 year olds. I would probably put a bunch of kids stuff on it and run it inside the Kids Mode app.
Would you say the A100 is a good choice for this purpose? Is there a better choice?

I think it is. I let my 3 year old daughter play fruit ninja and anger birds all the time. Its the perfect size to sit in her lap while shes on the couch.

How sturdy is the A100?

IMO a100 is good but may be overkill. Why not just a really cheap one like a coby or an off brand. I've seen some go for less than $100 retail.

noo
i suggest not it is not worth it to give a 300 dollar honeycomb tablet that can be upgraded to ics to a 3 year old
a wasted investment

It's a pretty tough little tablet so long as its not thrown across the room. I've dropped mine quite a few times and it hasn't broken yet. The screen is gorilla glass, scratch resistant, takes some force to crack. When combining this tablet with kids, I'd say the most you have to worry about is how much you'll have to clean the screen. I work as a barber and use my a100 to keep kids occupied while I cut their hair.

Cost will be $230 new or $200 used. Their current tablet is a Xoom and this will be tablet #2 so they don't have to fight over the Xoom. As someone who works in the financial industry I have to ask, do you really consider any tablet, phone or other piece of electronics an investment?

Well without a calculator you'd be doing all your financial analysis on paper... which would take so much longer. Without communication electronics you'd be running around much more wasting that precious time trying to get a very easy question answered when you could have just called up that person... or to give you more of an advantage let's say you could use snail mail via horse... since vehicles have some form electronics in them. But seriously, try to do your job, for one week, without ANY form of electronics along side someone that is using them. Also, the consumer electronics can be used as productive tools if that's what you use them for. All depends on the motivation and mentality of the user. In the right hands, a hammer can build a house... in the wrong hands it's being only used to open beers. For those who use consumer electronics for entertainment... best argument I can make for them is that it's it helps with stress management and therefore an investment on their mental well-being.
Hope that gives you something to think about. Looking forward to your response.

The a100 is a great tablet! But for a 3 year old....I think that maybe some special learning tablet like a 'leap pad' or 'leapfrog' would be better. Honestly, I dont think a 3 year old should have a tablet just yet. Their eyes are still developing....It just doesnt seem right to me.

No, it is not.

+1 my son has a vtech innotab. looks like daddies but he actually learns instead of just drawing on daddies tablet. not to mention its way more rugged and costs 79.99. way better tool for teaching your kids. hes only 18 months but answers super simple math questions and colors like a champ haha. the leappad is also great...it was my second choice.

I dont know about going the leaf pad route. In my opinion a100 will be a cheaper choice in the long run, lot of fun educational stuff for kids for low prize even free. Leaf pad you need to buy new books and cartrige.
Im not an expert in parenting so don't need take my opinion as an advice keep it as anothr tough to think about.

I dont think a tablet is a good choice for a 3 year old kid, since they'll just use 2 or 3 apps (mostly games) it'll be a total waste of money.

Honestly. It is not a waste a money because the kid learna. My daughter has one and she learns a lot and.is very smart. And she plays outside all the time. It may be a waste of money to people who dont have money to just buy one. But if you can afford to get one for yoir kid then go for it. This tablet is the cheapest tablet for which you will get your most bang for your buck.

Galaxy SII Drop Test

So Squaretrade (I think?) did a drop test with the iPhone 4s vs Galaxy SII (not our version but they are similar in build I would assume). Be warned, it hurts to see our phone fall but it fared VERY well compared to the iPhone 4s.
http://allthingsd.com/20111017/samsungs-galaxy-sii-beats-the-iphone-4s-at-least-when-you-drop-them/
In your face Apple...........of course not very scientific. But I don't like Apple products anyways.
You know that your vaping signature banner is setting off google chrome warnings? It doesn't want to let anyone access the page because apparently that site is known for distributing malware.
I did my own drop test yesterday. 2 ft right onto the upper left corner.
No issues other than a scuff mark!
Where the hell is my case I ordered?
i saw this vid a couple days ago. The test with the ipad, zoom, galaxy Tab was pretty cool too. These things are way too fragile.
I am happy to see that Samsung products had the best results. Take that iphoney
Thats cool the screen stood up to the test. The bezel can't pass my pocket test, there's already some substantial dings on mine and I baby my stuff. Way more prone to stuff like this than the Sensation was. Definitely get a case if you're questioning it........

I like to think of it this way: IPhones are more for young children, old people and those who are not technically inclined (and have no interest in being so)... Or for people who don't care about being able to customize or tweak it much on the software level, they just want it "to work".

That was painful to watch, even as much as I hate iPhones >.<
Iphones remind me of those brightly colored toy laptops from Toys R Us. Kids see mommy & daddy with their laptops & they want one too, but they can't quite handle a real computer so they just get a toy that makes them feel important
Why does everyone feel they need to compare to apple. It keeps proving they make better products and we are all chasing to be like them. Don't give apple the credit.

Just to be on the record, I saw this as more of an interest in seeing what happens when our phone drops to the ground. I honestly don't care much about what happens to an iPhone, as I don't own one. I know other posters are bashing apple which is fine with me (I could care less), but I took some useful information out of this and have much less worry using this phone day to day with or without a case now with the knowledge that it can take a beating and still come out fighting strong.

Did you ever watch Star Trek The Next Generation when it was out? The idea of computers the size of a book was a futuristic idea. It was an idea that was considered 300 years in the future. Now we have tablets that are even more advanced than those in the show.
The military is now testing invisible armor
Purdue is testing nano-technology for cloaking devices
MIT is working on a tractor beam using light technology
We have cell phones that are more powerful than the computers used to power the space shuttle to the moon circa 1969
Even the play station 3 has the computing power of super computers from 1997.
Technology improves at incredible rates. I would be shocked if we don't have see through and flexible tablets inside of 10 years and maybe even 5.
I want what you are smoking... did you not see the holographic display and the entire thing was transparent and flexible?!?

...maybe samsung's next phone will be designed by boeing...>,>
While the commercial seems to be an exaggeration it will most definitely be commercial produced within the next 5-10 years.
Invisible internals? While I'm sure they can minimize the visibility of such things what I think most likely to happen is there will be a 'hand grip' or such where all of the unhideables will be hidden...mostly the battery. The motherboards for these devices is already insanely tiny and only 1 or 2 more process shrinks and super-integration of all of the disparate circuits could reduce the entire motherboard to a chip the size of an SD card.
The flexible invisible screen already exists...and it's AMOLED.
The battery is going to be the hard part...though perhaps we're not thinking 'out of the box' enough IRT batteries. I know there is lots of work going on in the polymer-battery area...flexible, semi-flexible or formless liquid batteries? Who knows....but...we will see it.
This is no flying car...these are consumer electronics. These megalith companies have a vested interest in making the stuff they just sold you yesterday completely obsolete by today to take more of your money tomorrow. That's their incentive. That's why Apple will sit on a phone for a year...they also make money on the back-end in the app store. Samsung makes money on the hardware, that's why there's so much of it.
I see nothing compelling of current gen, next gen or even rumored next-next gen Androids/smart phones. My phone is pretty damn fast and thin and has a huge screen...aside from radio upgrades, storage upgrades and processor upgrades...which we really don't need yet, we are way ahead in that department....I want something as amazing as a flexible see through phone. Going from a Lotus to a Moment was amazing, going from the Hero to the Evo4G was amazing....Going from the Evo to Evo3D was, umm, incremental? Slightly? Evo3g-NS4G to ET4g? It was cool, it is the superior phone for certain, but...amazing? Not anymore.
Bring on the transparent holographic liquid-polymer see-through battery invisible electronic 4D 5G LTE-A² ultra-phones. I'm getting bored, lol.

I saw a preview some where online that a japaneese company has a thin plastic film stuff that did just what this describes in this video. I totally beleive it. Ovbiously the internals arnt see through but the diaplay could be. It was shocking when i saw the preview demo a year or so ago
Edit- it was slightly like the videos posted in page one. I posted beford i read it all to see if there were videos
Honestly, some people here have no imagination. The internals, for example, don't need to be see through, they just have to be smaller and clustered to a certain edge of the device and be covered by something black so it looks like a design. The rest can be clear. Done!
You guys need to balance out some logic with imagination, you will then see how close these things are to actually being in production.

Buyers beware

I have always owned and loved android devices since the g1. I always got carrier branded devices and switch every so often. I thought it would make sense to grab a gsm nexus so I started researching, and boy did I research. I thought that the price of a gnex from google is not bad and i had enought money to get one, but for whatever reason i figured i'd check ebay, but they sell for the same or more used. so I checked craigslist- on payday i saw what looked like a great deal... new gnex with extra battery 300, so i contacted the dude and met up about 40 minutes drive. the phone was in new condition there was the extra battery and vanilla ics, tried it made a call so i took it. while driving away i started playing with it.. i went to the camera app, got a message stating to insert sd card, i was like wth a gnex with an sd card. then i got a call the there was a flashing led at the bottom. i got home and examined it well, turns out its a fake ( my fingernail can operate the capacitve sereen) it looks so damn real... now im screwed out of 300 bux. I was so upset i went to google and got a new one, so I should have it soon... learnt my lesson well.- i really didnt think that fake phones existed and damn they did a great job... i think ill just give it to my son- he will by happy to have it
Pics or it didn't happen LOL. Can we see it? Wanna see how good of a "job" they did.

Yeah that's a fake. The site even looks like amazon, with the way it's laid out and even some of the graphics.
This is why I like buying things eBay over CraigsList. eBay has gone to great lengths to protect buyers. With that being said it is such a pain any more to sell things on eBay (major hassle listing/shipping items, excessive fees, picky buyers) which is why I usually won't sell things on eBay any more.
In your case though you got a fake phone, which may have been hard to tell when you bought it but hypothetically if it were a Verizon phone for example it could have been completely real but may have been stolen and had a bad ESN. Even then though I believe you can check with the carrier to see if the ESN is clean. I guess what it boils down to is you just have to be very cautious whenever buying something from an 'un-trusted' source.
On a side note, I just received my Verizon Nexus that I bought on eBay for $240. This thing was listed at 'Used' but it is seriously in like new condition, not a scratch or scuff on it (and it came with a nice case). I am absolutely loving the phone so far. Only thing I don't like is that I didn't upgrade to it sooner.

Thanks and so long for now

Just wanted to take a minute to thank all the Devs and everyone that helped during my time with the Epic Touch. My company has issued me an (YUK) Iphone so I just could not justify spending the 80.00 per month keeping the Epic. I love android and hate apple so this was a tough decision but felt I had to give it a go. I did get 280.00 for the epic with Best Buys buy back program ( best 35.00 I ever spent) and may end up back with a Galaxy s 3 but for now it is Iphone only. I almost threw up typing that. Thanks again for the great fun and all the help, I still HATE APPLE.

As ashamed I am I have to admit that I have an iPhone as well.
And it's isued by the company as well.
But too many people in too many places have my personal phone number so it's not that easy for me to move to another number (lucky me).
So I run around with 2 phones.
And since we have a family plan it's not $80 for me but rather 20 or 30. I can take it.
Hope you will be back soon.
Sorry to see that you must leave and hope that you come back to us. I also had an iPhone for about 6 months when I changed jobs. I am pretty much just like Agat said. But luckily I was able to switch the iPhone for an S3 a few weeks ago. So all is right again Anyway good luck in your endeavors!

Can you explain this? You pay some fee up front and they buy back your phone at any time at 4 x the value anyone else will?

They had a buy back program that cost 35.00 if you use their insurance which was 9.99 per month. They will buy back the phone at a percent of the original value, not the contract value when you get ready to trade it in. The phone sells for 699.00 at Best Buy without contract so I got 280.00 to sell it back after 11 months. They have canceled this program and only allow current buy back customers to take advantage of it. I can see why they discontinued it.

Almost true, I asked if I could swap it for a Galaxy S3 but they wanted us all using the same phone.

Why do you ask, do you have a problem with me thanking the devs and everyone that helped us while I had this phone, or are you just trying to be a Jerk.
Mods please feel free to close this thread if you want. I just wanted to say Thanks, thats all, Just Thanks.

GNex depreciating so much quicker!!

Why is the value of the GNex depreciating so quickly?
I already know Apple products hang on to their value much better. This is evident based on the price of 2nd hand iPhones. Even compared other older 4G Android phones... it's worth more than the GNex (using Swappa as rough estimate).
Edit: disregard, I have a GSM model.
My opinion: I don't care, I don't plan on selling. Have a perfectly working device in my hand right now.
But I guess it's just how technology (and mobile devices on the very top of it) is.

If you need an investment, buy stock or real estate. Phones are tools to enhance your life, not to increase your wealth (unless you are a developer and can monetize your work).

This. I don't know why anybody expects their Android phone to remain the same price when there's a new one coming out every few weeks.

I understand how you feel about the iPhone.. But to be honest there is nothing a phone built in July 2010 can do well. I'm sorry but someone paying $200+ for a iPhone 4 is retarded.
But Android us a two fold issue, one being they constantly build something better 4 months later, and Android hits a cheaper price point. The Galaxy Nexus being sold brand new unlocked for $350 was awesome, but dented retail. On the flip side though my wife's RAZR 32gb is worth about $150 because since then there has been the RAZR Maxx, RAZR in a million colors, RAZR HD, RAZR HD MAXX. They kinda kill themselves. Phones are like computers or cars, buy it but don't expect a large return for the most part.

You guys are wrong. It really depends on what you plan to do with the phone. If you like to get a new phone relatively often.. Wouldn't you rather have the phone maintain its value better so you can sell it and move on to the next greatest thing. But if you are those that will use a phone till it dies, then obviously this does not apply to you. So no, I don't see it as an investment. But this does factor into how I budget for future phones.
Ultimately, it depends on your long term plans.

I'm excited about prices dropping on our phones, this means I can treat it more like an everyday item than a fragile price of electronics and get a new one e for under $200. Then again I said that with my fascinate but even still, I never ended up needing g a replacement. It's much nicer to not feel like I'm required to baby something because of its dollar value.

"Wouldn't you rather" and what actually happens are rarely the same thing.
Wouldn't I rather have a seven figure income and a home in Martha's Vineyard? Yes. Don't I actually have a five figure income and a tiny house in a less than phenomenal suburb? Yes.
