So ADW Launcher finally updated - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

way back in the days of GB, adw was at the top, but lost its top spot due to lack of updates. But now its updated and i have to say, im impressed. Its not as smooth as nova yet, but i bet that will change in a future update since this is its first major release in forever (plus, if you install v6 supercharger script the lag dissapears). But its performance is so good i can defiantly use this over nova. I particularly like its widget picker, its different in a good way. They have an action bar feature thats new (to me anyway, dont know if theres something like it on other launchers). And theres also a resize screen option thats also neat, especially if your running paranoid android.
Unfortunatly i already found a bug. The dock dissapears into thin air at some point, and the only way to get it back is to reset adw settings. Im still investigating which option causes this bug, but i just thought i would put that out there.
Im also interested in knowing is this update enough for old users to love adw again

I'll just leave this here...

Hey cool, I was always torn between adw ex and launcher pro plus (LPP was a just a bit little smoother) before I got on ICS. Judging from the comments in the play store, it looks like the update ticked a lot of people off and is somewhat buggy, but I'm sure the bugs will get ironed out promptly. Good to see it's not dead

yea it is buggy. the app drawer is a big laggy with any transition and the dock bar likes to vanish, but i still find it useable and i love it. I havent gotten the chance to install v6 supercharger script to see if it helps with the drawer lag (i assume it will, since it did wonders to adw on ics). And im sure it will be updated regularly now, at least i hope it does.

Got the update this morning. Bought EX version a while ago. Tried it and yeah, new version is a little buggy. Hopefully they'll get it right.
I was using it on GB and JB builds up to FI03 then it got goofy. Had to switch to Nova.
Hopefully they can get it working right.

To fix the disappearing dock just simply go into settings and disable the secondary dock or its called hidden dock I think... then you'll be good to go..however u make it disappear is beyond me but I remember having this issue in the evo
I don't see options for he second dock..installed do like it.. but
Don't see the option

Was my launcher of choice on GB and below. When ICS launchers came out I started using those but they never allowed me the amount of customization I wanted, not until recently have they finally caught up.
Now that ADW is back, it is my main launcher again. It allows me so much customization and since I change screens and setups alot it's perfect for me.

It's very buggy. Since the update my widgets keep disappearing at random times, and my settings revert back. It's frustrating.

Why are so much apps so laggy?

I was so happy when I upgraded from a T-Mobile g2, but now I'm thinking it wasn't worth it
Everything was smooth on the g2 even if it was single core at 0.8ghz
When I use apps the scrolling isn't smooth at all, everything's so laggy, especially go launcher which I was using on the g2 without any problems
Do you guys think a future update will fix this?

I would say that there isn't many apps updated for ics yet.....only a few and that's why they don't run smooth....but I would guess that as more and more phones get ics, more and more apps will be updated too......at least that's what I think and hope......

The built in live wallpapers aren't optimized for ICS except phase beam. Wouldn't surprise me if a lot of others weren't either. Also.. if you are using a live wallpaper not optimized for ICS.. well there's your problem.
I'd bet, like most, that it hinges on the optimizations for ICS.
Keep in mind, ICS was a HUGE update (maybe not coming from 3.x but y'know) and app-devs have a ways to go before they're using the newer configs on all their apps. It'd be entertaining to see GB ported back over to the GN to see how well it ran.

Best ICS apps?

I know people probably ask this 1000 times a day but:
I recently got a ICS ROM on my phone and can't find and decent apps Googling things like "Top ICS apps" all the results seem to me targeted at new users. I am looking for the must have apps for advanced people running custom ROMs and writing their own apps.
apex launcher. that's all i can think of that's ics exclusive that i use.

I have ZERO lag on apex when opening the app drawer (and no Apex is not a system app on my phone) but I will give Nova a try regardless.
I also second Chrome and Apex/Nova Launcher as the must haves so far. Honestly most good apps for ICS are going to be available for older android OS's as well just because of the huge installed user base that exists for froyo/gingerbread. Only 3% of all android devices are currently running ICS

Wow, I find it quite funny that you openly admit that there is likely 1000 other threads C covering this issue but you posted anyways.
The reason there are not many results on Google (which I find hard to believe) I'd because ova has not been out long enough with high enough market penetration for useful ics only applications to be created.

gtalk on ics, multiple logins... love it.
and ics itself? the differences are not obvious, in some ways...

system settings...
the app drawer w/ widgets...
the stock browser. man oh man. whata improvement.
at first, i didn't think much of them, until forced to flash back to gb for a day. then i realized the subtle things i was missing.

Definitely subtle changes!!! I didn't notice much upgrading, been using aokp on the galaxy s. But when I got this phone and just ran gingerbread that's when I noticed it. I'm missing a lot of features of it like silly faces on the video cam, tablet like widgets and definitely the browser that's able to save sites for offline reading.

Easy-to-use ROM?

Hey everyone. My Mother-in-Law has the Sprint SGSII and.....she hates it! She needs the capabilities the phone offers for her business, but she is extremely frustrated with the UI of Android. She is currently running the most recent ICS update. I am curious to know, from experienced users of this phone, what the most user-friendly ROM is - considering the end user.

I recommend the Blu Kuban Rom, its pretty much drama free. Use Odin to install a rooted version of ICS, then install CWM Recovery. Once that is installed slap the Blu Kuban ROM onto your SD card. Boot into recovery and install the ROM.
You will want to read some FAQs and guides if you haven't done it before.
Probably miui

My vote goes for stock with Apex launcher, the feature to lock the desktop is amazing for newbie android users, grouping shortcuts, customize the bottom icons, slight theming, working good so far.
I've rooted my SGS3 & am running StrongSteve's Odexed Blue, but this is my first Android phone & rooting experience. I will definately read the stickies & FAQs before I do anything. Hopefully the Epic 4G Touch isn't too different from my SGS3.

Stock, let the mother in law deal with Sprint especially if she uses her phone for business. Next thing ya know you get blamed if she misses a call or gets a late text.
Try a different launcher like apex or nova first. Lots of ppl also like go launcher, many themes
I have Nova launcher and I like it. Or go to settings, apps, select all, go to twlauncher and clear defaults then hit the home key to switch to twlauncher and you can make it your default for a straight Android look.

Google is like pretty good at what they do and IMHO AOSP is the cleanest, simplest to use option available. Keep the stock launcher and just put phone, browser, text and email in it...

No ROM is going to fix stupidity. No offense to your in laws.
That being said blu Kuban is a good choice for customizing to her specific needs. I usually refer to it as the "build your own ROM" ROM. However she may be a little daunted by the frequent updates and large amount of options. If you do choose that ROM I would highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the faq in my sig so you can send to any issues she may have with it. Also any ROM by team VeNuM, especially m'ICS or blue BOA would be a good choice as far as stability is concerned.

Hehe, none taken. She's not stupid, just "technologically challenged."
I can't remember where I saw the screen shot, perhaps an article on Android Authority, but I seem to recall seeing an initial setup screen shot from a GNex w/JB - shortly after Google launch party. That screen shot allowed two options, basically beginner or advanced mode. I believe I came away with the impression that was geared towards the UI too, not the setup method.
Now, I know JB ROMs are in alpha stage for the e4gt. Do you think I should wait for, what looks to be, an official JB release for the SGSII from Samsung?
Thoughts? Has anyone else seen, read, heard, or experienced this "beginner mode" on JB - or were the paint fumes at my office gettin' to me more than I thought they were that day?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
JB roms are not quite ready yet. There was some type of easy setup thing though. Honestly your best bet would probably be a simple launcher and lockscreen.
Keep it stock. Use a different launcher and remove all but one screen. Put the things she uses most on it as shortcuts, then lock it so she can't accidentally mess it up. Did that for my wife and it really helped!

I find GB more stable then most ICS ROMs. Great battery life awesome signal and great GPS locks. Most GB ROMs are complete and done with updates due to ICS coming out. Currently ICS is still being updated and has many flaws. A lot of the devs like ruj and mijjz got their stuff in order but they update a lot and may irritate your mother in law.

Opinions on 4.2

Does anyone truly like it? I find the extra page for toggles to be an annoyance to get to, and requires extra time. It just looks nice. The lock-screen also defeats all purpose of having a lock screen, and removes useful shortcuts (I know these can be added in through some cm or aokp builds but still). I didn't think it was possible for a new android version to really take a step back in terms of functionality but 4.2 really did. Scrolling isn't nearly as good as it was in 4.1 as well. But this is all my opinion, I'm interested to hear what you guys think. I'm looking to drop back to 4.1, and I'm hoping key lime pie gets rid of lock-screen widgets
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app

I like it.. Looks pretty good.
Although, I do agree somewhat with the lockscreen. When I had messages as one of the pages on the lockscreen, I wish I could just text them from there. But instead, you press it and it goes to the messaging app instead.
Agreed. With lockscreen and toggles. If I remember correctly though, pure AOSP that ships on nexus devices prior to 4.2 didn't have toggles. That's a luxury that was only afforded to root users. So really it was a step forward.
In my opinion though, they should have implemented CM's toggles and called it good.
