Would those of you who use apex launcher try nova launcher. I tried it and while apex launcher is nice real nice, I cant stand the lag when I open the app drawer.

I have ZERO lag on apex when opening the app drawer (and no Apex is not a system app on my phone) but I will give Nova a try regardless.
I also second Chrome and Apex/Nova Launcher as the must haves so far. Honestly most good apps for ICS are going to be available for older android OS's as well just because of the huge installed user base that exists for froyo/gingerbread. Only 3% of all android devices are currently running ICS

Wow, I find it quite funny that you openly admit that there is likely 1000 other threads C covering this issue but you posted anyways.
The reason there are not many results on Google (which I find hard to believe) I'd because ova has not been out long enough with high enough market penetration for useful ics only applications to be created.

So besides the fact that you cant open a singal thread on xda anymore without getting atleast one flaming comment(which is sad)
Since ics been out for about 7 months devs have made some exclusive 4.0 apps

I just flashed this ROM today... and I'm still playing around with it... but is it missing the Voice software that my stock came with? (Voice instructions... Driving mode... Ect)... I installed the Google files suggested...
Also, I'm not seeing Swipe at all...
Swype isn't there, I just signed up for the Swype Beta and got it back...the keyboard on this version of Swype is actually preferable to stock imo
Awesome!! Thanx so much for the quick reply...
Cm will be missing alot of extras that came with our phone... but extra customization features that didn't..
Personally I like touchwiz and tw framework apps like the camera and mms app so I stick with roms based of stock.. still fast and look great..

Is this your first time using CM? It's the most barebones rom you can get, there won't be any extra software installed like on other roms. It's basically just the core files needed for the phone to operate plus some tweaks & customization options, so you'll have to manually add things like Swype and Driving mode. This is what *I* love about CM though, it's almost like a 'build your own rom' deal.
I'll stick with TW based roms, might try out MIUI. Using the stock android camera, calendar...no thanks. The TW roms are just as fast. I noticed nothing working faster running the CM7 build which is the usual want from everyone at the expense of good looking and more features(not tweaks).
I just flashed CM9 on my Nexus S, it's meh.

This is interesting. I am still stock but this is the smoothest Sense out of the box for me.
Are you rooted? If yes, did you port stuff from your phone? This would create problems especially switching from another version of Android.
If you aren't, it could be stuff that you have installed also.
Just a guess.
Could you specify where you get lags? I didn't really notice any lags. There are slight delays sometime (for example when you open the clock (defaults to world time, which sucks)) but that's to be expected. Other than that it seems very smooth to me.
You can download Apex or Nova Launcher from Play store and you don't have to have root. I prefer Apex because it just fels more smooth and has more options. And who thinks that Sense is not lagging should give Apex a try and than compare yourself
By the way Sense gets disabled by itself if you set Apex as default launcher. That's a 100 MB pure win on RAM.
Just by scrolling between homescreens, i only have clock/weather widget and contacts widget and calendar widget + some icons on my homescreens. Sometimes it runs totally smooth, and sometimes it lags when scrolling to the next screen.

I have gone from 2.1 to 4.0, in between using all kinds of launcher.
It's true in the earlier version the difference can be quite obvious. But I don't think so for 4.0. Sense may be slower, may be not. It is no longer obvious.
But I don't use fancy background, just a static picture. And I always turn off animation.
The OP is talking about smoothness and not response which I agree that sometimes sense causes some delay. But that split ms is harmless to me. I am not going anywhere in that time span anyway. But for the OP to notice such a difference is abnormal.
Apex launcher made me love and buy the device again lol
Sense fan since the early days, but not 4.0 i don't like the taste or will tolerate the lagginess on a quad core hot chip

With all due respect how can you honestly be okay with a half-baked phone? I am a galaxy SII owner and I've had my HTC one X for one day. I love the phone but sense still appears to be more of a memory hog and hindrance than anything else.
I know lots of people who are happy with SGSII's because the software largely functions as its supposed too (I still put vanilla ROM on it because touchwhizz is ugly) but I am already experiencing my htc rebooting the launcher everytime I press home after opening a few apps.. I also noticed that something like 650mb of the 1gb ram is being used when I turn the phone on... Sense is seriously a memory hog. Multitasking doesn't appear to be functioning how I'm used to on the S2. HTC should make sure they iron out kinks like this before they rush to market, after-all their USP is the software...
Even before I received my HTC one X i was reading weekly about bugs and problems people were having with it, which unnerved me a bit.
Thing is, I actually like some elements of sense and it's a vast improvement from my desire but the fact is I can see sense really dragging the performance down over the life of the handset. Even if I use Apex launcher, sense's launcher still drains memory.. I'm removing sense asap

Hey everyone. My Mother-in-Law has the Sprint SGSII and.....she hates it! She needs the capabilities the phone offers for her business, but she is extremely frustrated with the UI of Android. I recommend the Blu Kuban Rom, its pretty much drama free. Use Odin to install a rooted version of ICS, then install CWM Recovery. Once that is installed slap the Blu Kuban ROM onto your SD card. Boot into recovery and install the ROM.
You will want to read some FAQs and guides if you haven't done it before.

My vote goes for stock with Apex launcher, the feature to lock the desktop is amazing for newbie android users, grouping shortcuts, customize the bottom icons, slight theming, working good so far.
I've rooted my SGS3 & am running StrongSteve's Odexed Blue, but this is my first Android phone & rooting experience. I will definately read the stickies & FAQs before I do anything. Hopefully the Epic 4G Touch isn't too different from my SGS3.

Try a different launcher like apex or nova first. Lots of ppl also like go launcher, many themes

I got my tech retarded dad an evo 3d and put an AOSP ICS rom on it for him.It seems to be working well enough. As such I cannot recommend an AOSP rom enough for simplicity and ease of use. Google is like pretty good at what they do and IMHO AOSP is the cleanest, simplest to use option available. Keep the stock launcher and just put phone, browser, text and email in it...

No ROM is going to fix stupidity. No offense to your in laws.
That being said blu Kuban is a good choice for customizing to her specific needs. I usually refer to it as the "build your own ROM" ROM. However she may be a little daunted by the frequent updates and large amount of options. If you do choose that ROM I would highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the faq in my sig so you can send to any issues she may have with it. Also any ROM by team VeNuM, especially m'ICS or blue BOA would be a good choice as far as stability is concerned.

Hehe, none taken. She's not stupid, just "technologically challenged."
I can't remember where I saw the screen shot, perhaps an article on Android Authority, but I seem to recall seeing an initial setup screen shot from a GNex w/JB - shortly after Google launch party. That screen shot allowed two options, basically beginner or advanced mode. I believe I came away with the impression that was geared towards the UI too, not the setup method.
Now, I know JB ROMs are in alpha stage for the e4gt. Do you think I should wait for, what looks to be, an official JB release for the SGSII from Samsung?
Thoughts? Has anyone else seen, read, heard, or experienced this "beginner mode" on JB - or were the paint fumes at my office gettin' to me more than I thought they were that day?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
JB roms are not quite ready yet. There was some type of easy setup thing though. Honestly your best bet would probably be a simple launcher and lockscreen.
Keep it stock. Use a different launcher and remove all but one screen. Put the things she uses most on it as shortcuts, then lock it so she can't accidentally mess it up. Did that for my wife and it really helped!

I find GB more stable then most ICS ROMs. Great battery life awesome signal and great GPS locks. Most GB ROMs are complete and done with updates due to ICS coming out. Currently ICS is still being updated and has many flaws. A lot of the devs like ruj and mijjz got their stuff in order but they update a lot and may irritate your mother in law.

You can just keep stock and go dead simple with i launcher. It will obviously have no bugs (its stock). its just an iphone launcher
way back in the days of GB, adw was at the top, but lost its top spot due to lack of updates. But now its updated and i have to say, im impressed. Its not as smooth as nova yet, but i bet that will change in a future update since this is its first major release in forever (plus, if you install v6 supercharger script the lag dissapears). But its performance is so good i can defiantly use this over nova. I particularly like its widget picker, its different in a good way. They have an action bar feature thats new (to me anyway, dont know if theres something like it on other launchers). And theres also a resize screen option thats also neat, especially if your running paranoid android.
Unfortunatly i already found a bug. The dock dissapears into thin air at some point, and the only way to get it back is to reset adw settings. Im still investigating which option causes this bug, but i just thought i would put that out there.
Im also interested in knowing is this update enough for old users to love adw again
I'll just leave this here...

Hey cool, I was always torn between adw ex and launcher pro plus (LPP was a just a bit little smoother) before I got on ICS. Judging from the comments in the play store, it looks like the update ticked a lot of people off and is somewhat buggy, but I'm sure the bugs will get ironed out promptly. Good to see it's not dead

Good to see it's not dead

yea it is buggy. the app drawer is a big laggy with any transition and the dock bar likes to vanish, but i still find it useable and i love it. I havent gotten the chance to install v6 supercharger script to see if it helps with the drawer lag (i assume it will, since it did wonders to adw on ics). And im sure it will be updated regularly now, at least i hope it does.
Got the update this morning. Bought EX version a while ago. Tried it and yeah, new version is a little buggy. Hopefully they'll get it right.
I was using it on GB and JB builds up to FI03 then it got goofy. Had to switch to Nova.
Hopefully they can get it working right.

no kidding, he pushed out 2 updates for it already. Seems like development of it is in full swing again
Downloaded it after I saw this and I was disappointed. I bought EX way back on GB. Still needs work but getting there.

Unfortunatly i already found a bug. The dock dissapears into thin air at some point, and the only way to get it back is to reset adw settings. Im still investigating which option causes this bug, but i just thought i would put that out there.

To fix the disappearing dock just simply go into settings and disable the secondary dock or its called hidden dock I think... then you'll be good to go..however u make it disappear is beyond me but I remember having this issue in the evo
I don't see options for he second dock..installed do like it.. but
Don't see the option

Was my launcher of choice on GB and below. When ICS launchers came out I started using those but they never allowed me the amount of customization I wanted, not until recently have they finally caught up.
Now that ADW is back, it is my main launcher again. It allows me so much customization and since I change screens and setups alot it's perfect for me.
It's very buggy. Since the update my widgets keep disappearing at random times, and my settings revert back. It's frustrating.
