I have had problems installing various ROMs on my Verizon GNex for a while now and it just occured to me that my phone might be somewhat uniques because it has a static ip from verizon. I was on with tech support today and when they took off the static ip and switched it to dhcp, it got the ip and worked fine, but when they put it back on static ip, the phone would not get an ip. They told me to go get another sim card, but the phone works fine if I restore it to locked, unrooted stock.
Basically, after I unlock & root stock and then install a ROM, my 4g data would not work. In settings, IP address is 'unavailable' where before the ROM, my static IP was there.
Anyone else have a static ip with verizon and have any issues or have any ideas why this might be an issue?
Old post about this problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1935957
My question is, why do you have static IP? For remote connections and such?
Static IP has to be manually set in the phone and changing ROMs is like changing operating systems on a PC, you'll lose network settings in doing so. I think....

This is a work phone and our firewall is set to only allow a specific range of IPs in on port 25 for email. If I could manually set it I would, but I don't see where, I'm pretty sure it's pushed out from Verizon. Right now I have it working on Eclipse, but for whatever reason it just wont work on any others (JBSourcery, PA Android, Xenon, etc.), it's got to be something small/subtle that people just aren't thinking of. And since this isn't a widespread problem, having a static ip from Verizon is the only thing that makes my situation any different.
I just don't know enough about how the phone communicates to verizon to get the connection and static IP. Maybe certain APNs, RIL, etc. I tried making a backup of the /system/etc/apns-conf.xml file while the data was working. Then I installed a new ROM and overwrote it's apns-conf.xml and rebooted, but that didn't fix it.
I read somewhere that there is a bug that would make your Mac address change every time you flash a ROM, though that would affect Wi-Fi only but maybe other things too?

do you know how verizon is assigning the static IP? is it by ESN/MEID, MAC address or what?

the 2 i listed no... but as a previous poster mentioned, there was a bug that changed your mac address all the time
call verizon and ask them. they will know.

I called and they said it is by the ESN/MEID, the MAC can be anything, VZW doesn't care.

the only thing i can think of is the sim isnt properly getting authd to the network and therefore not giving you an IP

Yeah, but what would various ROMs be doing that could effect that. It works again when I restore a working backup of stock or Eclipse, same sim, so it's got to be software right?
This is a really weird and frustrating issue.

it works kinda slow but I was able to install app called hotspot toggle and I was able to pick it up on my ipad and netbook took awhile to get an ip but it worked!! I haven't figured out how to change the settings to put a wpa and stuff but indeed a nice solution for now till a root occurs

Great find. !
This is also useful on nexus one as I don't have to go through all the hassle to turn on hotspot.
Great, I'll go out to buy G2 this week!
But how can I change the mobile hotspot settings on G2 when it's hidden?
Good question. I would like to know. Have yet to make a successful connection. But it is sending out a wifi connection. Just can't obtain a ip address. Only tried to connect N1. And to tired to find my laptop. Will try in the am. And post back
Can't get a connection but it is transmiting.

some people also tried it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798247
apparently it broadcasts a SSID but doesn't assign a ip guess tmo knew what they were doing. pretty sure we could overcome this with root.

According to what OP said, it may take a while to get IP.
I found the writter and I'll ask him to put additional mobile hotspot settings on his application.

Awesome! Shows up as Open Connection - connected ...
releasing and attempting to renew now ...
EDIT:
Didn't pull an IP - I'm not convinced that there is a DHCP server running on Vision with just toggling the connection.
I now have a reason to install a Terminal Emulator and check out IFCONFIG xD
....
Tried IFCONFIG under normal and temp Root - nothing displays

The problem is: both easytether and PDAnet don't work with Cradlepoint routers.
Wasnt aware of that . Thanks for the heads up !
So, I recently updated my ROM to ◄ Stock Plus ► v3.01 and while I'm not sure if this is what caused the problem I thought I'd mention it. Anyways, I've been trying to access "megaupload.com" and no matter how many times I try it just doesn't work. Any other website I try works, but not that one. I've tried restarting my phone, clearing everything in the android browser and toggling some of the settings the browser has (block pop-ups and the like). I'm at a dead end now and am just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem or knows how to fix it. Thanks!
Are you using any add blockers, or have you made any edits to the host file?
Also not that it should matter but have you tried changing your user agent string?

I'm not using any ad blockers, and I haven't made any changes to the host file. Could those have been changed by the creator of the ROM? I did try changing the user agent string but had no luck there.

They could have been but most devs leave that to the user. Does it happen on wifi and 3g? Could you have been baned by the site for something?

Just tried it on WiFi and it works fine, 3g still doesn't however. And I don't think megaupload ever bans people as far as I know.
I might try restoring to another ROM just to see if that's causing the problem.

Well if you can connect thru wifi i would say verizon, or who ever your thru is somehow blocking it, but i have no clue why they would. Actually i just tried on 3g and it wont work either. Verizon is blocking it for some reason.
Oh, well that's that I suppose. Thanks for your help anyways!
That kind of makes me mad. I pay all that money for data, and i cant go to websites verizon decides is using to much data: BS
I just tried it too. Verizon must not want anyone uploading huge files, especially if you're grandfathered in to the unlimited data plan.

There are a couple ways you might be able to get around this.
1. Install "Set DNS" (Free, android market)
2. Manually configure your DNS servers (requires terminal/CL knowledge, not sure if easily made permanent)
3. Set up a VPN. I have a personal server that I am running a VPN service on. This allows me to browse as if I'm on my personal LAN.
I'm running Stock+ v3.0 and Set DNS is working for me. I've just loaded megaupload.com over 3g by switching to google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).

I feel your pain mate,
I've had the same problem. I discovered that my phone was leasing the same IP from my router over and over around every 2 minutes due to DHCP. Then, after a while the connection would be ****ed up, grey wifi bars, sometimes still blue. Everything pointed to having a working connection. But doing anything involving an internet connection on the phone resulted in NOT being connected at all. It drove me crazy aswell and after a couple of hours of Google Fu I resolved the issue by simply assigning a static IP for my phone and using Google's Public DNS servers.
Give it a try, maybe it'll work for you aswell.

Long press on your network and tap on 'modify network' - tap 'advanced setting' and scroll down a bit, there are a few more options.
To assign a static IP you should have basic knowledge on how to configure your wifi router and such. Can't really help you there, either you know what you're doing or you don't. Things differ from router to router.

EDIT: Bulls**t!!!! don't works...
Well, that's unfortunate. I'm still baffled on why it's acting up at all. My phone was fine for almost a month before it started acting up, and I didn't change anything on my phone. Same ROM... and all of the sudden, WiFi started acting all weird.
Also I just discovered that changing 'Keep WiFi on during sleep' to never, does absolutely nothing. WiFi still stays on during sleep.
I don't know... it's the same case... I restored all the phone, lock de bootloades, etc And I updated by OTA, one by one, to 4.1, when the problem begin again... grrrr
Any idea pls??

OK, I've tried searching throughout the forum and Google but couldn't find answer to this. I recently changed my DNS on my rooted T-mobile Note3 to a overplay SmartDNS, but turns out that the WiFi of the place I work for doesn't like that. My WiFi keeps on failing to obtain IP address, (my workplace is high security kind of place.) So, I need to change the DNS of my phone back to the original default that was in my phone. Yes, I'm stupid (now I realize) that I didn't save the DNS before I changed it. Is there a way to figure out what the original DNS was?
The DNS should be whatever is inherited from your works WiFi. Get a wireless laptop or something then do an ipconfig and find it what it is.

^don't forget to change it back when you are not at work. I also do this, but use the app romtoolbox pro instead of manually doing this so I can connect to those "secure" networks. My work also does this. Luckily I am the system admin...

My brand new G3 won't let me save any WiFi network passwords. It also says "failed to connect " for every network and has me 're enter the paraphrase every time.
Even though this happens it will connect to some networks. But in the WiFi status screen where you choose your network, it doesn't show me as connected.
Anyone else having similar issues?
EDIT: FIX FOUND:

Have you tried to restart the router that might help I'm not having that problem or maybe a factory reset
I have just tried to connect to another network and have the same problem - works fine at my place, but not my parents' place. Problem is definitely phone related not network related.

I have tried that already - tried WPA2 TKIP and AES. Don't really want to lower my security any further.
Fortunately I'm not here very often, and I get 4G data with my 8GB allowance, so can always use mobile data.
Did you remove or freeze any of the LG bloatware? Stuff like Wfd services control the Wi-FI.
I also had this problem and I had to do a factory reset to fix it.
I'm having the same issue. it will connect to the open networks but wont save them. have no problem connecting to wifi that is protected though. I did freeze some apps...not sure which one did it though. probably one of the carrier iq ones if its my luck. i have the tmobile model
Just did a reset. First I did not let Google restore all the passwords and everything was connecting fine. Then I did another reset where I did let Google restore and it had the problem again. It is something to do with how Google is restoring the account.... ****ing LG messed something up

Need Help Still
I have been unable to connect to some Wi-Fi networks. At my work I cannot get the phone to connect to hardly anything on Wi-Fi unless I go to the other side of the building. Then sometimes it does connect and work fine for a while then all of a sudden it starts acting like it's not connected even though it shows connected and I have to reboot the phone or turn off Wi-Fi to access anything. Then after the reboot it won't connect again. It works fine at home and in other parts of my office, but not at my desk. All my other devices (laptops tablets and old phone) were able to connect here just fine. Any Ideas?

Hello,
you must edit /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf with wifi enabled. If you try this with wifi disabled, old (wrong) configuration file is restored from unknown location backup file.
I had a same problem and all passwords in config file was right. I thing that problem was in first network block. There missed SSID and PSK="NONE" while KEY_MGMT=WPA-PSK in this block.
I replace whole config file from /system/etc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf.
Fighter
Ive had a few problems with wifi between different networks at work and when i updated my phone it solved the proble . I thought it was just the updat . When i had to do a hard reset for a different unrelated problem i got the problem back. However, when i went from Dalvik to ART it fixed the problem. Im figuring that something in the updating process sorts the wifi settings out and obviously its not limited to a software update but also includes optimization.
Deleting /data/misc/wifi/ wpa_supplicant.conf and p2p_supplicant.com solved the issue for me. hope this helps.
