So, I recently updated my ROM to ◄ Stock Plus ► v3.01 and while I'm not sure if this is what caused the problem I thought I'd mention it. Anyways, I've been trying to access "megaupload.com" and no matter how many times I try it just doesn't work. Any other website I try works, but not that one. I've tried restarting my phone, clearing everything in the android browser and toggling some of the settings the browser has (block pop-ups and the like). I'm at a dead end now and am just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem or knows how to fix it. Thanks!
Are you using any add blockers, or have you made any edits to the host file?
Also not that it should matter but have you tried changing your user agent string?

I'm not using any ad blockers, and I haven't made any changes to the host file. Could those have been changed by the creator of the ROM? I did try changing the user agent string but had no luck there.

They could have been but most devs leave that to the user. Does it happen on wifi and 3g? Could you have been baned by the site for something?

Just tried it on WiFi and it works fine, 3g still doesn't however. And I don't think megaupload ever bans people as far as I know.
I might try restoring to another ROM just to see if that's causing the problem.

Well if you can connect thru wifi i would say verizon, or who ever your thru is somehow blocking it, but i have no clue why they would. Actually i just tried on 3g and it wont work either. Verizon is blocking it for some reason.
Oh, well that's that I suppose. Thanks for your help anyways!
That kind of makes me mad. I pay all that money for data, and i cant go to websites verizon decides is using to much data: BS
I just tried it too. Verizon must not want anyone uploading huge files, especially if you're grandfathered in to the unlimited data plan.

There are a couple ways you might be able to get around this.
1. Install "Set DNS" (Free, android market)
2. Manually configure your DNS servers (requires terminal/CL knowledge, not sure if easily made permanent)
3. Set up a VPN. I have a personal server that I am running a VPN service on. This allows me to browse as if I'm on my personal LAN.
I'm running Stock+ v3.0 and Set DNS is working for me. I've just loaded megaupload.com over 3g by switching to google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).

First let me say i'm sorry that i didn't find information regarding this issue by searching but I cant seem to find information describing the exact problem i'm having.
I have nand unlocked and while i can connect to wimax, i can not load any pages to completion. The browser progress bar moves but will never finish. I'm about ready to do the start over method. I know it worked at some point, but way to many things have changed since i knew it worked. My MAC appears correct when i do the wimax_mtd in terminal emulator. Does anybody have any insight into my particular problem? Thanks for any help...
I am having this same problem on the most recent Fresh. The page loads very quickly but the progress bar never finishes.
This happens only while connected on wimax. FWIW, I'm pulling up to 13mbps downlink.

Most recent versions of AdFree have removed BTC IP (it was slamming their servers).
You can try 0.0.0.0 for a custom IP and see how that goes.

I use tethering all the time with Tmobile. Last week I upgraded to the Galaxy Nexus and now when I try to connect to the Internet using hotspot or usb tethering I get a Page that is telling me to upgrade. I get it with the native setting as well as apps from the play store.
Is there anyway around this?
Thanks.

Last I heard, T-Mobile was using User Agent filtering to detect tethering... If your desktop browsers can spoof a mobile browser, you may be able to get around it.
Sidenote: some folks get the tethering warning on their device simply because they change the UserAgent string to reflect a desktop browser. It's pretty silly.
Thanks for the link but I keep getting the same page that comes up when I'm trying to surf. Something like "please buy our tethering plan". It blocks every page I try to go to. That is what I'm trying to get around.

The only issue I have with changing the agent user is Netflix.
I just tried PDA net and it seems to work with everything. I read some where that it blocks the provider from seeing your traffic. So far it seems to work. I'm using it now and I haven't had any issues.
Thanks for the tips.

I also switched to Chrome to get away from this. The stock browser when set up to receive full sites gives you the same notice as a computer tethered on their network. Pretty much a pain in the A, but Chrome is quite nice.

Do you know of any settings to have wifi tethering work without the hotspot plan?
With my old HTC sensation I just had to create a new apn with (epc.tmobile.com) to make it work, but with the GIII this is a no go....

Foxfi In the Play Store. No root needed just read the description to make sure it supports your device.

Do this, go to Google Play and download (WiFi Tether For Root Users) open the app go to settings, 1) Change device-Profile to Generic ICS. 2) Change Setup-Method to Netd (master). Now go back and click on the big WiFi icon to start tethering, soon as the system finds the device pull down the notification and authorize it, make sure the Access-Control is enabled., your're all set, good luck.

T mobile can be a real pain in the ass with blocking tethering. I don't believe the app matters best way I know to get around it is to change the user agent on the computer and do not use internet explorer. I believe chrome and firefox have plugins for that.
I tried FoxFi on a non-rooted stock t999, doesn't work. Sends out the wifi signal, but the computer never actually connects to it. Keeps giving me some kind of error when trying to connect to wifi.
Using the built in tether wifi option, I can connect to the wifi being supplied by the sgs3, but any web activity takes me to the t-mobile hotspot sign up page.
OP use firefox, not chrome to tether. seriously.
and you can try downloading the 'tether' app from the clockworkmod website. google it.
I tether my nexus 7 from my sgs3 with foxfi and its really simple. Just make sure u install pdanet on the device u want to tether. I'm doing a tether with Bluetooth.

Hi!
I just installed Foxfi app. on my phone. I noticed there is also an app. called "Foxfi AddOn" and according to the description it provides some optional features to the Foxfi application.
Has anyone installed this app? The reason I am asking this question is because I noticed that by agreeing to install this app., personal information is accessed ("general info about what you are doing with the phone, potentially including personal or private info").
The above quote I got when I press to "install" the app., so I would appreciate any feedback/advice on installing this app. Thanks!

It just adds a proxy to FoxFi, which still didn't work on my SG3 for wifi (didn't try bluetooth).
I tried, Barnicle, FoxFi and the wireless tether app for rooted phones.
NOTHING WORKS.
I did switch to the unlimited plan, as well as my father, and 2 friends, ALL of which have no issues at all.
I thought it was my rom, so I switched roms last night and still no go.
I'm starting to get worried here.
Foxfi- "wifi mode has failed on your phone please use bluetooth mode instead (still doesn't work)"
Barnacle "WIFI: Could not set ad-hoc mode of wlan0:invalid argumnet"
Wireless Tether "Tethering started with errors"
WTF ??? Everything else with the phone works fine
Anyone?
interesting, you even did a full wipe and installed another ROM?
have you tried tethering with native and then use firefox instead or a useragent for chrome?

Read carefully because im only posting this once!
Unlimited plan does not include tethering meaning when t-mobile reads you're using a desktop useragent it reads on the DNS servers and blocks your connection to the site redirecting you to their add hotspot crap.
Easy fix
Download wifitether app the original from back in the day! Requires root!
In settings on the newer betas you have the ability to change the DNS servers
All you have to do is search for whatever DNS servers you want to use and add a primary and secondary. I use verizons
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
You can search for others but they seem to be the fastest for me.
Now share this and repost it if you want.
What this does is it enables wifi tether and overides the default DNS server from t-mobile allowing outside sites to report to our desktops.
Enjoy.

Ok, here is my final conclusion and we can hopefully put this to rest, at least for some but hopefully many. Kal-El7 and myself spent quite awhile trying to figure out why tethering has suddenly stopped working for so many people. This may or may not be a solution for you in particular but it's good knowledge for those of you being affected or would be affected by this.
It appears T-Mobile has greatly expanded its detection of browser user agent clients. I can't seem to type just anything in a browser user agent spoofer. I used to be able to. Now it seems you must have a legitimate browser or you get the upsell. This has been my problem as of late and we couldn't figure out what was going on until we started ruling everything out. Oh, and make sure you don't use any Google web pages when testing user agents because apparently Google pages don't trigger the upsell page to appear (I think this has since changed and you may get the upsell). You can visit the following page for a comprehensive list of user agents:
http://useragentstring.com/pages/useragentstring.php
This is the string I use as my agent in Firefox using the Add-on User Agent Switcher 0.7.3:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1)
In Chrome, install the extension 'User Agent Switcher' and then select 'Internet Explorer 7' as your user-agent.
Update: 07/20/2013
All this time and only now do I realize I didn't even mention what ROM I'm using. DOH! I'm using Tweaked 2.3 (as of 08/15: Tweaked 2.4.1) with default kernel and no additional mods or tweaks. You can use the built in tethering but I prefer to use a tethering app for additional features not available stock.
Update: 08/15/2013
I've had requests about the tethering app I use so I'll outline exactly what app I'm using and what settings I use:
ROM: Tweaked 2.4.1
App: Android-wifi-tether 3.3-beta2
URL: http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com
If you're using Tweaked 2.3+ ROM (and probably other ROMs). DO NOT change APN options within Android settings as it is not necessary.
Make sure these settings are checked or unchecked in the tethering app settings:
Change Device-Profile = Samsung Galaxy S3
Change Setup-Method = Netd-Ndc (master)
Send Netd Max Client Cmd = Checked
WiFi-driver reload = UNCHECKED
WiFi-driver reload 2 = Checked
Routing fix = Checked
You can change other settings to fit your needs. If you discover anything useful while experimenting with the settings please feel free to post your results.
Thanks to Kal-El7 for all his help in ruling everything else out in order to come to this conclusion. I'm forever grateful that he took as much time as he did in helping me.
If you have been helped in any way by this post, please hit the thank you button. Thanks!

Yes, I'm sure. I can use LTE while wifi tethering just fine as well. I'm using Tweaked 2.3 ROM and I do not need to turn on the tethering apn options in settings. I am using the latest android-wifi-tether for root app found here:

Tethering stopped working for me since LTE became active in my area. However, I can still tether using the User Agent spoof, but I never like using it because it restricts me from streaming netflix on my browser. The only way I can get around this is by rolling back to 4G APN settings and changing Network mode from LTE/4G/3G/2G to 4G/3G/2G. Now my tethering is working just fine.

I am not quite sure why this is so constantly debated.
The fact of the matter is that changing your user agent does ABSOLUTELY nothing to hide your tethering. When you transfer data (more specifically data packets) over ANY network, those packets have very distinct packet headers. ALLLLLL they need to do is look at those packet headers and see the peculiar and distinct format for an uplink, and you are caught.

T-Mobile cant see a single thing I do on either my phone or when tethered. All, and I do mean ALL of my data ( headers and data ) , runs into my home server over an rsa encrypted tunnel Granted, I dont need to tether often, but I do like my data privacy. Apparently T-Mobile is allowed to look deep into your data packets per the contract you signed with them. Doesnt that make you feel good? I mean ... if any of you are like me, I use my phone for online banking, RDP / VNC into government servers, FTP / RDP / SSH into my home servers, managing my personal website , etc.. Security is a big issue.
I also highly recommend against using public proxies as they will have full access to anything you do. It takes about 10 minutes to set up a home tunnel provided you are even the least bit tech savy ( which if you are on XDA and using roms, means you have some skills ). Granted you will want a halfway decent home ISP. The dedicated server can be as old as a p2 with 256Mb ram. Doesnt take much.

Very nice. Security is always a good thing. Odd though that if they can see all that, why aren't they contacting me or sending me a threatening letter when I tether with no tunneling or VPN use? You would think after 200 gig over the last several months they would have said something to me by now. I mostly watch Hulu and Netflix in HD and that adds up in GB's quick. I very occasionally use BitTorrent but use BTGuard to encrypt its use. Still, no issues except for the occasional upsell page when I have a user agent spoofing issue. I think they use very basic detection schemes but elude to something more advanced. Proof is in the pudding as they say.
