My phone will overheat when im not even using it, that is i have it sleeping with no apps in the background and it will still overheat. the battery drains very quick at the moment its been 23 minutes on battery and the battery has already gone down by 20%. when i go to the battery use the android os seems to be using the most battery at 56%. I tried flashing to a custom rom from stock rom in hope that the issue would be fixed but still no luck. any ideas?
Search for BetterBatteryStats and how to use it to check for wakelocks.
I think you should take it back to customer service center, as it looks like hardware issue.

If your cpus are locked at high frequencies, that may result in that behavior. Use cpu spy to see the used frequencies and times.

I have poor battery life on my desire, it barely lasts 7 hours. I have tried wiping battery stats etc, and have the screen brightness at 50%. I have read that some kernels can greatly improve battery life, is this true? If so, which would you recommend, and do I just flash it like I would a rom? I am using the latest miui.
Cheers,
Steve

They can but finding the underlying app causing the phone not to sleep would be what I'd be looking at. Remove all installed apps and add them 1 at a time and see how the battery goes

Yeah i've tried this, there's nothing draining the battery.
Not at all
Such battery drainage can only be induced by either heavy usage, or phone not being able to go to sleep.
The differences between kernels in custom roms are merely a shades since all of them are pretty much battery efficient. You won't miraculously jump from battery life of 7 hours to 30 hours. Concentrate on your apps or even better, third party Widgets.

Probably a hardware fault then - the OS on it's own with no apps installed shouldn't drain a battery that quickly. Did you also turn off the sync options to test that theory?
Personally sounds like a knackered battery/phone
If it isn't apps/widgets (they are the culprit for heavy usage) then it would prob be a faulty battery. I did a little test last month to see how much battery I could lose in 24 hours. I lost 8%. I guess it could be a baseline to start off with.
I'hv flashed cm7 last week. The problem is that my defy battery drains too fast as compared to stock Froyo. I have calibrated its battery correctly. Also phone always remains hot. I am looking for solution but didn't get proper solution. Plz help..

I've noticed the same, since flashing CM 7.1 my battery will barely last the day, I don't think it's going into deep sleep.
I'm having the same problem
When I flashed CM7 the second time recalibrated and deleted battery stat battery life improved...now i get about 35-40 hrs on one charge.
But of course there are many factors that contribute to battery life and our devices won't be the same.
Not proper solution yet..

I had problems too but after the Calibration the battery works just fine.. try Calibration again
Thanks to all..will post after getting my problem solved.trying cm7 stable..

I tried cm7 stable..here battery is draining more quickly..is there any ROM for better battery performance..?

can you give us some numbers and specifics about your usage ? its not possible to give any view point or explanation till we know whether you are running on 2g or 3g wifi on/off etc etc .
that your phone remains hot can be caused by two things (in my experience): your cpu is always on 100%, or your gps is on. First of all, try wiping battery stats from recovery when fully charged, than let it discharge. secondly, try using setvsel to control the frequencies. if your battery still drains fast, check whether its water damage indicator is red (the - originally - white sticker near the battery pins), cuz mine is red, which means it was contacted by water, which couldve caused a short, and till then my battery drains much faster.
You can use cpu spy from market to see what is your cpu doing and the times for each state. Check if it's going to deep sleep.
I always keep my GPS, wifi off.
CPU is undervolted at minimum values as 300-16,600-26,1000-46.
I've already calibrated battery.
My battery statistics are: (approx.)
Display- 40%
Android system- 10%
Phone idle -15%
Cell standby- 10%
Android OS -5%
Remaining- other apps
Display is taking 40% while I always keep it at minimum brightness.

I finally got solution.. My defy's battery performance improved a lot. I have installed wakjiui ROM and calibrated the battery and it was unbelievable. Using it since last week. Almost doubled battery performance. At night it drains by only 2%. And one more thing about wakj ROM is it is perfect combination of miui and some apps from cm7. .

i got 48 hours.. sometimes more using MIUI .. highly recommend you to use it!
It is based on miui.

and what exactly do you do if your phone doesnt go into deep sleep?
I've been noticing that my battery life seems to be decreasing consistantly. I've tried recalibrating my battery stats a couple of times, but it didn't seem to make a difference.
My usual charging behavior is to let the battery get down to 15-30% and the other charge it either overnight or all afternoon at work, depending on when the battery gets low. I try to either keep the phone on the charger as long as possible or let it get as low as possible so that I'm not running additional charging cycles through the battery. The screen is usually set at 35-50% and it is always the thing that eats up most of my battery.
Am I imagining things, or is my battery life nowhere near what it should be?

Which ROM are you on? LL7 users have reported weird battery issues. Even I had very bad battery life on Indian LL7, had to factory wipe data and cache for the battery to function decently. Am on Indian MA6 now and the battery is superb.

I'm on JellyBomb 12.1, LJC base. I don't think it's a ROM issue, though, since the Android system never eats much of my battery. The culprit is always the screen.

Hey guys so I got the phone I can't find a CPU temp monitoring app that works.
My battery hits about 44℃ whilst gaming and charging and my other halfs m8 runs games smoother :S
Also the battery seems to drain rapidly for example from 100% with no use its down to 60% in 4 hours and the battery usage doesn't help much biggest offender is google services this is with Wi-Fi on connected to a network and brightness on auto.
So could someone help me with why it seems to be slower and battery life and CPU temp this is all completely stock with latest firmware thanks in advanced

Turn off the accounts and sync until needed. I also keep mine on power saver unless I need more CPU. With no use I'm seeing an estimated 36 hours of battery life. In my daily use I get about 50% left when I plug in after a 16 hour day.
Anyone experience this problem? Battery went from 50%+ to zero instantly and shut off?
If you just got the phone, chalk it up to a calibration issue. Otherwise, take it as a possible indication you have one of the rare explody batteries.

First few runs will always be poor. My first run was absolute garbage, but now after using it for a month, its still garbage... (jk lol)
Give it time, and keep an eye on it going into deepsleep / using unecessary cpu freq's with GSAM of Cpu Spy.
