[Q] What to do with BrickBug - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hello everyone. I have searched as much as I know how and I can't come up with any information pertaining to the BrickBug and the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989. (See thread). I've downloaded ChainFire's app and it tells me that I have the brickbug and to be careful. I'm afraid to even root my phone because of this and was wondering if there is a relatively safe way to root my phone with the brickbug or am I just worried for nothing?

come on man you not serious are you? there are thousands of people that have rooted their phone in this forum. did you a search for brickbug in this forum? I owned the Galaxy 2 from Sprint which took a lot of my brothers out the game. Now thats the phone you got to be careful with. If you are doing homework then go through this forum and you will see know one here has that issue. If you are worried at all about rooting your phone my suggestion is just dont do it....
Nice answer to you is you have not done enough reading please do more before going forward with the t989 variant....

Is the Samsung Epic 4G Touch the Sprint Galaxy S II?

I am hoping someone will be able to help me with this. I just got a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II and I do not see it on XDS anywhere. Is the Samsung Epic 4G Touch the Sprint Galaxy S II? The only S II phone I see on XDA is the Samsung Galaxy S II 19122 and it does not look like my phone in the picture. Even in the countless videos I have watched its not my phone. In fact I do not even think that the 19122 is not a Sprint phone. The Samsung Epic 4G Touch looks like my phone and its for Sprint. Which should I be using? What should I do??
Yes, sprint just just ditched the old branding. Only flash and root and do other stuff that says Epic Touch 4G, ET4G, or sprint galaxy s II

Thanks for your reply!! I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S 2 from Sprint. I am not a pro when it comes to rooting phones but I come from a EVO that I had rooted and flashed many roms. However my Galaxy S 2 has me stumped! I rooted it and it has not worked the way it should. I cant get my GPS to work on any ROM I have flashed. I have been through the forums, Google and anything else I could think of. I Have tried every app or fix idea I could find and still nothing. I am now at the point where I would like to unroot my phone and start over. I feel as if maybe I have done something wrong. However I cant find a video or directions how to unroot my phone back to stock and then to root it again. I know my phone came with ICS and all the videos or directions I find are from 2.3. What should I do?
Look up QBking 77 in the forum and that will lead you to You tube, he has the scoop on the Epic touch now the Samsung Gal.S 2.
Watch his stuff and decide which way you want to go.
Sfhubs one click root is the simplest method, QBking covers it.

Stop flashing and do A LOT of reading before you hard brick. This phone is nothing like the evo, recovery changes with every kernel, rom manager does not work, there is a super brick bug that will completely kill this phone with no way to fix. You need to slow down and research before you do anything else.

I don't even know where to start with the reading. I just cant seem to find anything I need and I don't know why. My phone is not bricked, I think I am going to reactivate my EVO before I ruin this phone. Thanks for the warning before I kill my phone. Maybe I should not have purchased this phone.
Great phone

You don't have to fear change...leave that to my dad! lol. Anyway, QBKing77 has been an amazing resource, lots of great YouTube stuff, start slow and careful and you won't brick it. Leave the EVO to collect dust.
Its not hard once you get an understanding of what's what. There are alot of variants of the gs2 and quite a few ppl have flashed stuff meant for other versions which will kill usb-pc connection. And there are safe and unsafe kernel/recoveries to use, unsafe kernel and a factory reset in recovery will trigger the brick bug and you get the blue light of death(dead phone) Read the stickies in the sub forums of this section, search info for epic 4g touch as that's what this phone is(was) called and what all the info is listed under in forums. Just slow down and take some time to inform yourself before you do something and want to kick your own ass for rushing. I'm not new to rooting and Modding, and I read for 3 days before I even thought about rooting when I came from my og evo. Patience is key when doing things to your phone that don't come out of the box. Think of it like a car, you wouldn't strap a supercharger on it and then go race down a strip without doing some research first, right? Once you get a little education on the device under your belt you'll be flashing like you were on the evo, its just a different process with a learning curve. That's the way it is when changing devices, all firmware, even tho android based, is slightly different with its own quirks you'll need to understand.

Treat this as if it where when you were rooting your EVO. I learned a lot from QBKing77... The basics are out there to be found... Look at one-clicks... And read... Then read some more.... It will come to you and then you will be like... If it were a snake it bite me.

I just back tracked all my steps and found that I did follow QBKing77 directions for root and recovery using odem. I downloaded and flashed the roms from XDA. As of now I do not see that I did anything wrong. I will try to give this phone another try, if I cant unroot or get it to work then it will just be a paper weight. Thanks for your help and advice.

Thanks for the advice, I will do more reading and see what I can find. However at this point I am positive that I have followed all the correct steps. This is why this is driving me crazy. I just dont know what I will do if I cant get this phone to work. Thanks again.
Trust me, I know everyone is saying read, and read some more, but that's really all you have to do. Just go over to the General side, and read the first 3 pin-ups. That helped me a lot, and all the wonderful people on these forums, and also qbking77. I rooted my friends htc device, and I must say, rooting and flashing on this device is A LOT easier! Hope you don't brick, and good luck!
I don't understand why people are answering your question the way they have so far. From what I understand, all you wanted to know was what the deal was with this phone and is it a S2 or not.
Here's what you need to know.
This the Samsung Epic 4G Touch. It is the same specs as the other Samsung Galaxy SII, but it has it's own custom board and firmware because it's CDMA and Sprint. Why couldn't Sprint users just get a CDMA version of the regular Galaxy SII all of Europe uses? Because, it's from the U.S., and in the U.S. big companies try to make life as hard as possible for their customers while treating them like cattle. So in short, the Epic Touch is close to the same thing as a Galaxy S2, but it isn't compatible with normal S2 software or development.
The model name of the Epic Touch 4G is SPH-D710. As long as you refer to the phone as the SPH-D710 there should never be any confusion.
What do you want to do with your phone?
If you want to root it, you'll need to know what build you are running. Are you on EL26, FF18, or FH13?
If you want to flash it to a custom rom, which one? There are several good ones, most notably CM9 which reached Beta status earlier this month.
Do you want to install recovery?
well Epic touch is S2 for sprint and its called Samsung sprint epic 4g touch , better than the other s2s out there , bigger better screen and stuff
about rooting
i was in the same boat mate
u can say still am
came from VZN fascinate - the best brick proof phone i have ever used , lol flashed it with my eyes closed like 50 times a day ;P
anyways S2 is tricky : sincere suggestion
Reda a bit before touching
and never flash anything just for the heck of it , make sure if what you are going to do is in fact right ? ask around and dont give into the temptation of flashing just like that , again its a SINCERE SUGGESTION.
as far as basic rooting and flashing is concerned
first use the oneclick odin stock rooted ROMS, use them see what you really need if u are on GB or ICS
then look for the particular ROM with them features
will add more for you

[Q] Can someone help, this is just not making sense?

Ok i have a Bell Samsung Galaxy S2 model number gt-I9100m, currently i have updated through kies to 4.0.3.
Baseband: I9199MUGLD3
Kernal Version: [email protected] #3
Build number: IML74K.UGLD3
Now, the problem i am having is plain and simple, Bell ICS BLOWS! The phone runs like complete crap. Now my other problem is also pretty plain and simple, i dont understand or have not found how to root the bloody thing. I dont have a micro sd card, and even if i did i dont no what version of anything to use. I have used search i have used google and either its just not clicking for me in my brain or i have not found the information i need. I want to root the phone and load a custom rom onto it.I found one site but it had a giant warning stating the roms listed where only for the verizon version of the phone. Anyways im just really frustrated and a noob to android and samsung and throw my self upon the mercy of the android gods and hope that someone out there(who is not annoyed by me asking) can help me out. Thanks in advance.
And crap, i put this in the wrong section. Im sorry.
No one is going to get mad for asking a question. But they might get mad if you ask the question in the completely wrong forum. This is the GS3 forum, not the GS2 forum.
Best advice I can give you is to start with the right forum. Read the stickies, and you should be fine.
Personally I also own a Bell GS2 and ICS sucks. Battery life is brutal, phone constantly locks up etc etc. But its a work phone so I'm unable to root it, and install a different rom. I just live with it considering I use my GS3 more lol

[Question] Universal JTAG Process for Galaxy SIII

Hey there! This is my first post ever on XDA, and hopefully not my last. I have been flashing ROMs since I bought a Samsung Captivate a couple years ago. I had always heard of the potential risks involved when flashing ROMs, and therefore had taken extreme caution when flashing. However, I eventually became comfortable with the process and took less heed than I should have with my Galaxy SIII AT&T. Long story short, I hard bricked it by installing a ROM meant for the international version of the SIII instead of the AT&T version, like so many other careless souls. After looking around the forums, I found that my only options were to:
1) Have my phone JTAGed by some mobile phone repair service.
2) Cry to Samsung pretending like I know nothing about my phone's demise.
Then I found this instruction manual (Uploaded to this post) describing how to JTAG the Galaxy SIII International version. I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not this manual would apply to the AT&T version of the SIII, as I could not find any post with information on it. Also, is it possible for someone to extract the bootloaders file off his/her AT&T Galaxy SIII and upload it here? If no one can validate whether or not this JTAG process will work on my phone then I will try it and post my results. I would rather not lie to Samsung about my phone's death and I wouldn't mind paying for my stupidity, but I see this as an opportunity to discover a more forgiving solution to such a common blunder. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Buying a Note II. Need some info.

Hi guys. I hope u all are doing well with ur Notes!
I decided to buy the Note II N7100 and i was reading. I found out that the Note2 does have the Sudden Death Issue. My enemy since it took my SIII with it too :/
Mine got it by rooting etc (faulty EMMC was the ultimate cause).
I searched alot and found out that I need to be on the latest Firmware just to be ON THE SAFE SIDE.
But I wanna Root, MOD, flash ROMs and all that stuff. So since rooting is a risky thing. Also the EFS Partition can be disturbed so i wudnt want to brick this fellow :/
Can you please tell me a SAFE Method to root, flash CWM, reset flash counter, EFS partition etc.
Cuz i'm afraid i might end up bricking it like my SIII i9300
Thanks

Just a tip, find a store which will replace the phone within a few days, if there's something wrong.
Check if the wifi works fine, I've had this phone for 6 months and it's driving me insane, custom roms and kernals haven't fixed anything.
If you're dropping this much dough, make sure it works. :highfive:

Its always better to read and perform,
TIP
a lot of times if there is any Mods or tweaks read it twice or more times read replies or understand the complete functionality what changes are taking place and when your fully super confident then proceed or stop there only .
The chances of getting sds prone hardware are quite low now, unless you're unlucky enough to buy up some old stock

Thanks alot guys for ur responses i really appreciate this
The thing is i have always been "unlucky".
My SIII bricked when it wasnt supposed to :/
Thats why i have a bit of FEAR left in me xD
Being rooted, doing an EFS Backup, custom recovery etc. will be more preventful i think. I'm gonna do the same

I have both SIII and Note II. After sometime of rooting, modding and cracking..... i still prefer Note 2 compared with S 3. You won't regret going for the big screen.

Thanks alot really appreciate ur and all others help.... next phone is definitely the Note 2 then.
My choice was either a Nexus 4 (Rs. 40000 here) or a Galaxy Note 2 (for 48000 here)
A price difference yes but u get that giant screen, with a nice stylus and TW overall...
This BRICKING thing was the only thing that I was afraid of.
but still my question is a bit unanswered:
What do I have to be on, or what to do in order to PREVENT A BRICK?
(Mention in POINTS if u can )

There is different types of scenarios for this question ,
If its ok with you stay on STOCK for couple of days don't root it ,do all upgrades
for more info on sds please find this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2093599
before s4 and xperia Z was released i did some extensive research comparing phones from HTC samsung and sony. note that this was back in january. For note 2 the only downside is that the screen is not full HD. in fact the LCD density is one of the lowest. i'm guessing this is due to the huge screen. besides that it has the stylus and mult-window and floating windows and ****, combined with this huge stock 3100mAh battery. big screen, big battery, quad core. thats all that matters. however, for me, my tiny asian hands do find it abit bulky sometimes and i get clumsy sometimes when i try to use 1 hand. lol...

unrooting help please!!

I really suck with technology but I bought a phone on ebay and I put a Cyanogen mod on it and I want it off because I have to send the phone back. Can someone please help me through a SIMPLE way to unroot my phone please??
I have spent hours looking online for ways to do it and none of them have worked. I just want this off the phone..
Some times i doubt people even know what searching or reading is...
If you just had taken the time to look at the pinned threads you would have found it immediately...

I'm sorry, I HIGHLY doubt you spent HOURS searching.
if you DID then your Google-fu needs work.
search for "galaxy nexus return to stock factory image" OR "wugfresh toolkit galaxy nexus"
unless the device you are talking about just isn't even a galaxy nexus, in such case you are in the wrong forum for help
