Is there any reason to flash an update through a .zip instead of updating OTA?

As with most things Android, I think it is just personal preference (and time). I know the scripts are becoming more advanced but I like flashing zip files...it sort of brings back the excitement of the first few flashes and satisfies that craving to flash something new lol
Manually flashing has less room for error as you perform all the wipes manually. Scripts aren't perfect, but I guess I haven't had any issues with it thus far.

I guess my noobness on this forum prevents me from asking my question in the development thread, so I have no choice but to ask this here. I just installed the EvoNonsense4.3.1 ROM last night and I'm loving it! Very Cyanogen like but with some sense things still in there. Great combo, IMHO. Just curious as to why the Build Number for this ROM shows up as EvoNonsens4.2? I verified that I did DL the 4.3.1 zip file, so no sure why the proper version is not reflected in the Software Information section. Anywho, loving this ROM so far. Very fast and everything is working great!

You can be a veteran and still should not post questions in the development section.
What you should have done is post your question in the evo non sense thread or pm the developer.....
Now your question is simple. The developer forgot to rename his Rom to the new update. It still is the newest but with the old name/number.

Thanks for the info. Why is it that I shouldn't make a post in the development thread for the ROM? I figured this would be something that the ROM developer would be interested in knowing so that he/she could fix it. Guess I don't know all the rules for XDA yet .

You can post question of a Rom in its thread. You don't make a new thread to ask a question about a Rom. It will clutter the dev section.
Now if you have a non specific Rom question that question can go in this section=q&a

Cool. Guess I need to make a few more posts before it will let me comment in a development thread though. By the way, your ROM is awesome!! Gonna stick with this one for a while. Trying to promote it as much as possible on the AC forums.

can anyone tell me how to root MIUI 2.6.15 ?
You should post this in miui thread ... that way you get the help you need for that rom
Wrong section dude. That's why there is a 'Q&A' section for the phone. To post there, there is NO other questions in this thread. Just ROMs and some occasional 'how-to's.... so please read prior to posting.
No harm done though, so PM a mod and ask them to delete this or move it.
Not to mention, you don't root a ROM, you root the phone so you can flash the ROM

I believe it's a minor glitch in the tapatalk XDA app or the actual XDA app from the Play store.

Hey folks,
I rooted my GS3 months ago and recently tried downloading the OTA update. The update failed and now I am stuck at 4.0.4 and when I tried to update I have a grayed out continue update option. I don't mind manually flashing the update via usb but I want to stick with just a stock rom just rooted so I can remove the bloatware and use Titanium Backup. Could someone point me in the right direction please?
Try getting a clue and posting in the right section moron.

Hey, he's just trying to fit in with the rest of the stuck-up XDA followers whom have a false sense of entitlement lol.
For the OP, 4.2 is not out just yet. I'm sure you meant 4.1.1 JellyBean. Take a look here, it's a great tutorial to get to the new update for the brand NEW stock GS3 Touchwiz Jellybean. It allows you to keep your root as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
Now, wasn't that easier than just telling him that he is an idiot? Yes, it's the wrong section, but damn... some people.

Wow. Attitudes like that are certainly NOT what this or any forum are about. Who the hell do you think you are to think you are so damn entitled? Quick tip, GTFO. The guy doesn't know so cut him a little slack.

Also good advice. I'm sure there are a few stock based TW ROMs in the development section that the OP can flash. I wouldn't know as I'm an AOSP head. Anyway, the OTA update probably failed due to the fact that he's rooted and probably removed some bloat. My suggestion to the OP would be to flash any of the JB Touchwiz ROMs in the subforum I mention if that's what he wants. There's also tutorials floating around on how to do that if he's unsure of what to do.
Also, thread reported for movement.
Silly Humans. All you had to do is report that it was in the wrong section and one of us would move it out of Development and into the appropriate section. Oh wait, that is what 1 user did do.
I was going to clean this thread out but instead, I'll leave all the responses so that if anyone comes across this, they'll know what not to do and how not to respond to threads started in the wrong section.
Moved to Q&A
Thanks Wood. I have that magical mod power on other forums and miss it when I visit forums I don't have the power in. The responses some people give are just aggravating.
Thanks guys!
Sorry for the wrong forum. I tried posting in another forum but it said I was restricted because I had less than 10 posts. With your help I am successfully at 4.1. :good:

If you want to keep root i would recommend installing root66_ATT_I747UCDLK3.tar.md5 from odin assuming you have a att phone. This is probably the easiest way.

Because normally this is due to a custom ROM or flashing a kernel not a fluke that happens to everybody and IMPO dev people got more experience and might have more ideas of what might be the solution.
Man this ROM bricked my phone.. Guess I need to go to the question part of XDA and find out my answeres that I have.... " see what I did there "

Thread moved to Q&A. Just so there's no mistakes made, questions like this NEVER belong in Development. Further postins such as this will result in disciplinary action being taken, and I'd rather not do that. Carry on.
I tried to post in the thread itself but I'm a newbie on these forums so I can't post in a development related threads. I was going to ask:
Is this the most up to date method for rooting the i747?

They should be. I personally have used the no trip counter method a while back and it works like charm. I would be surprised if it wasn't up to date. The devs are pretty good about it and would also put if the thread is no maintained anymore.

Nice. I used it once before but then auto rotate quit working except in the camera app and wasn't sure if it was a result of that or something else. Ive got a replacement now and miss the root features (TiBu, Greenify, etc). I can always hit em up again if it happens again I guess.
