Hey guys,
The power button on my phone stopped working this morning (without water damage). I'm preparing the phone to return to Samsung warranty, and in the process of reseting to stock and re-locking the OEM I noted that the phone does not respond to fastboot commands in the bootloader despite this working on the same system a week ago, no change in drivers or anything else. I installed PDAnet, still broken on Win 7 although I can reboot with adb.
I then tried this on OSX, again I can reboot with ADB, but the phone is unresponsive in fastboot.
I have three working hypotheses and I'm hoping someone can help me:
a) in some process of flashing my phone and being an uninformed n00b maybe I flashed something I shouldn't have or used some combination of partial fastboot flashes I shouldn't have. has this happened to anyone else?
b) whatever hardware damage knocked out the power button might have partially knocked out the bootloader
c) I just have really bad luck with driver set up and I just happened to mess up two different computer driver configurations but the phone is fine. to this end, I am setting up another Win 7 system fresh on a virtual drive as I'm typing, though I have little faith it will be different
update: fastboot commands didn't work on the other windows 7 virtual system, although adb reboot bootloader did
freaking a this is annoying.
i have a fully stock ROM and radio, anybody to know how to flash a new recovery image and lock the bootloader without accessing fastboot? Just have to get this ready to go back to Samsung so they can fix their own hardware mess ups.
they are 2 different drivers.
As much as I don't like using/recommending the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit (only because I feel it's better to actually learn everything you're doing), it's the easiest way I've found to get the Fastboot drivers installed.

Thanks guys for your comments.
I've tried Android SDK drivers, PDANet, Universal Naked Driver, and now the one click toolkit mentioned above, some on three different operating systems (Win 7, Win 8, OSx) on 32 and 64 bit.
The wierdest part is that under device manager, no device shows up when the phone is in fastboot, no is there any noise or any recognition of the device being connected at all. It is completely, 100% silent. (again, ADB works when the phone is booted).
I recognize that this may not be possible, but does anyone know how to flash a recovery image without being in the bootloader mode?
If fastboot isnt working like it should, and you are sure it isnt user error, then take it for warranty.

yeah fastboot + the power button (which was defunk in clockwork mod) are back online again, dunno for how long. agreed seems like a hardware/warranty issue.
Recoveries can be flashed with ROM Manager assuming you have SuperUser permissions, but otherwise you or the toolkit need fastboot working.

Hi,
I have an O2 retail Galaxy Nexus. Before I began to use the phone I thought I would root it now.
I've read through the instructions and tips but unfortunately my PC can't find the drivers...
I could still access the phone so I opened the .bat for Windows Superboot.
CMD read < Waiting for Device> so I closed the cmd after waiting.
The phone now seems to be stuck on Fastboot Mode. Holding buttons or using the screen do not do anything.
This is my first Android device.
Is there a way for me to get back to normal phone mode until I sort the drivers?
I would be tempted to remove the battery if this were any other circumstance.
Will the older threads about Fastboot being stuck also work?
Thanks in advance.
I hit this myself and yanked out the battery to overcome it. Sorry if that's not what you want to hear, but I do now have a rooted device.
In response to fastboot freezing at <waiting for device> you need to install the fastboot drivers (these are not included in the root zip). Google around to find the best way to install them, I ended up installing pdanet onto my PC - as this has them included - and then removed the application after the drivers were installed.
Thanks for the reassurance, el3ctrik. Battery pull allowed it to boot normally.
Think I'll wait til the morning before trying again... Read some more articles, and try the pdanet method.
Ta!
I remember struggling with the drivers when I rooted my NS - I also ended up installing PDA net to sort out the issue.

I'm looking at buying a GNex for next to nothing, but the seller says it's stuck in fastboot. Came across this thread after a search, is this a fixable issue?
You need to install two drivers. Actually, it is the same driver, it just needs to be installed twice - once when your device is booted normally, and once when it is booted in fastboot mode.
I personally would use the Universal Naked Drivers by 1wayjonny that bk201doesntexist mentioned, NOT the PDA drivers or Samsumg drivers or any other ones. 1wayjonny's drivers do not install any other software on your PC - they are just the drivers, unlike the PDA drivers.
Hello all!
I have a major, major, problem. Last night I wanted to flash a new ROM, so I had everything wiped from my sdcard so it will be like new again. Sadly, I was retarded enough to also do a wipe on /system. Now there is no Android OS loaded on my phone anymore and no ROMs on my internal sdcard to flash it.
The phone would boot up and will be stuck on the screen with the white Google logo and the white unlocked lock.
I am still able to boot into Download mode, Fastboot mode and CWM. The bootloader is also unlocked.
The problem is that none of my PCs and Laptops would recognize my phone, not even trying numerous tutorials and reading different similar threads.

Also Odin and GNEX Toolkit doesn't see that my device is plugged in, both in Fastboot mode and Download mode, so I cannot flash with that either.
I hope someone had experienced the same problem or knows a solution to my problem.
Thanks in advance!
you have a driver problem. you need to uninstall your drivers and reinstall them.
So normally my PC would detect my phone even without it having any data or OS on it?
Could you maybe point out for me what kind of drivers I actually need? I have tried so many I got really confused.

Focus on getting the correct fastboot drivers installed, and try to get your computer to recognize the phone when you type "fastboot devices" while connected via USB.
Flash a stock image from Google in fastboot mode. Boot into it at least once in order to regenerate the internal storage partition, before futzing around with custom recovery, root and new ROMS etc. If you flash CWM/TWRP without first booting once into the OS, you may be unable to write files to internal storage hence blocking any further progress.
I have tried almost everything to get the drivers installed on all the PCs I have at home, non of them is regocnizing my device.
tried it on both Windows 7 64Bit and Windows XP 32Bit.
Is my warrenty void if the bootloader is unlocked?

You're holding it wrong. Either that or your USB port/USB cable has died.
Okay so now that I've scanned pretty much all of what the internet has to offer on this issue, I'm helpless and forced to write a new thread here about this.
Yes, a similar question has been replied to a million times before, but absolutely none of that helped, made no difference whatsoever.
So earlier, I was on the stock rom, with TWRP flashed and root access. But wanted to switch to the community build. Tried the twrp trick to install the CB but that didn't work, so flashed the stock OP3 rom and flashed community build.
All went fine, until I tried flashing back TWRP. Used the traditional ADB method of doing that, seemed to have flashed it but tried going into recovery only to be presented with a black screen. I got fed up of that trying to fix it for a whole day so I just left it, because I could still boot into the OS and that worked fine.
Fast forward to about a week later; somehow the flash didn't work and I still have stock recovery. Now I try flashing TWRP again, but I discover that my device doesn't get detected in fastboot. It absolutely refuses to.
It DOES, however, gets detected in the OS just fine.
I've tried every which way, absolutely NOTHING seems to work AT ALL.
- OEM unlocking is checked, if that makes a difference
- USB debugging is turned on
- Uninstalled all USB drivers related to the device, and installed them via device manager (but it gave me this error:
"the folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with windows for x64-based systems)
seeing as I'm on an x64 version of Windows (its worked before with my Nexus 5, I swear)
- Tried it with different adb fastboot files, from all over the internet. All of them show just that blank space after I type in 'adb devices'
- Installed universal adb drivers.
- Samsung drivers.
- Obviously the official OnePlus drivers.
- Used Usbdeview to uninstall / force stop and re-installed the drivers.
- All in one tool
Now I'm thinking, I should try to re-lock the bootloader and unlock it again, or do like hard rest sort of things. I have no idea though, how this would affect the detection in fastboot.
Anyone have any ideas? Because I'm out of all of them, and so is most of internet.
TL;DR - Adb devices detects phone while booted in OS, but not in fastboot. Tried all methods, nothing works. Going to do lock bootloader then unlock it and try again, if not that then going to do a clean wipe and install the community build again, hoping that would work. Should I?

Hmmm Windows 7.
I can most certainly try that but the real question now is; how the hell did it work previously on my Windows 10 machine and refuses to work now? But at least I have a solution to try out, in the mean time! Thanks!

You need modified twrp by @eng.sdk.

I am having a similar issue. I have a brand new OP3. Everything stock. I'm attempting to unlock the bootloader and have found that while ADB recognises the phone, Fastboot doesn't. I'm pretty sure it's a driver issue and I have no idea how to fix.
Hello
Everything is working good
it seems to be a problem with adb Windows 10 IDK
, it is better to do it on Windows 7

I'm afraid you've missed the point, my friend.
If the phone does not get detected in the fastboot, it means I cannot flash anything, period. No original TWRP, no modified TWRP.
I had this exact issue and fixed it.
Fastboot would never see my device, no matter which driver package I tried or no matter how I tried to install or force the correct drivers. Turns out Windows 10 (and Windows 8) has a feature that completely prevents installation of unsigned drivers, which blocks the fastboot driver. If you're seeing "Kedracom" or "Android Device" in the device manager, then your driver is NOT actually installed. This is true even if Windows doesn't throw you an error message during install, or if you appear to force the installation. Even though it looks like you're doing the install correctly, Windows just ignores your unsigned drivers.
You need to temporarily disable the security feature to permit installation of unsigned drivers. This involves invoking a special restart function. Here's the howto for Win10: http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-...igned-drivers/
Once you've done this, on the next reboot you can do a forced install of the unsigned fastboot drivers you downloaded for the OP3. And simply rebooting your computer restores the security feature.
It's mostly because of the windows security over unsigned drivers.. Try the above method or just the cmd way..

Tl;dr: DM-VERITY error after upgrading, SIM card not recognized. Can't get fastboot to work to try out a solution. Everything is going to ****.
So... this one's a doozy.
I tried to install the update by dropping it onto my phone and using TWRP to install it, which I ended up having to update. After I updated, I get a brief second popup screen when I reboot telling me that there is an invalid DM-VERITY (it only pops up for a second). When the phone loads, it doesn't recognize SIMs.
I did some research and it looks like the issue can be fixed by flashing the stock recovery. So I go to flash the stock recovery, which requires the usage of fastboot. Which I always have problems with.
Sure enough, adb recognizes my device but fastboot doesn't. I have all the drivers downloaded, so I go check on my device in device manager. For some reason, it's always listed under "Portable Devices" no matter what I do... no matter whether I enable/disable USB debugging, MTP/PTP/Charging, etc. I was under the impression that a device not being recognized by fastboot meant that you had to go find it under "other devices" and manually update the drivers. However, the only options here are ADB drivers, not bootloader ones.
So I did more research. Turns out that Windows 10 is ****ty and you have to disable secure boot to install unsigned drivers. So I went into my BIOS, disabled it, booted into safe mode, reinstalled the drivers, and... nothing.
So I'm basically where I started and for the first time in a while, I have no clue what to do. Nothing's working. I even tried to load an older version of OxygenOS and install it with TWRP (sideloading didn't work), which didn't work. I'm totally stuck and I have no idea what to do.
If you don't care about your data, just use the unbrick guide method 2. Don't know about the first one, I have never used that. That will get you to a like new phone. You could even get 4.0.3 version, using the newer unbrick toolkit.
Windows 10 x64 isn't that sh**y. I've never had issues with the drivers, and they all install automatically (fastboot, adb, unbrick tool). They all work with 4 phones without any issues: OP3, Nexus 5X, Nexus 5, Nexus 4.
True, I had just unbrick my op3 2 days back by method 2 .
Well this was wild
So I did try to unbrick and got the Sahara communication error.
But I ended up fixing my problem! Someone on Reddit correctly pointed out that the dm-verity screen often exists simply as a result of unlocking the bootloader. I was assuming that one symptom caused the other. They suggested just reflashing OnePlus's 4.1.3 full ROM. I did it exactly the same way as I had when I got the error (with TWRP) and... it worked!
I'm astounded. My phone wouldn't work with fastboot, wasn't recognized by the unbrick toolkit, and had a host of other issues. I did 7 hours of work on it and the solution ended up being that I just needed to reinstall the OS (again). My hypothesis is that there was some hidden issue that resulted in part of the firmware being incorrectly updated, and when I wiped my device as part of my troubleshooting process it was ready to be reflashed with the OS.
Thank you guys so much anyway!
I may have royally mucked up my Nexus 7, but I am hoping there will be a way to rescue this.
Basically, a bit of knowledge that I thought meant I could get out of everything has probably led to me being a bit too careless with what I was trying, and I have done a great many stupid things with the tablet today.
I can get the Nexus into fastboot mode, but apart from that, all it will do is sit on the Google logo. I believe I have wiped the OS and although I had TWRP, I think I may have wiped this too.
I cannot get my Windows 10 laptop to recognise the Nexus when I plug it in - possibly due to poor attempts to update drivers. "fastboot devices" lists nothing, and I cannot see an entry for Android devices in Device Manager. I have read that a Windows computer will not detect an unknown device if it is plugged in while in fastboot mode, is this correct?
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might manage to get any sort of ROM onto my tablet that may allow me to reflash it and get it working?
(Data recovery is not a concern - at least I did that before I started playing)
Thanks

Have a look at this thread. Check if this app detects it.
UsbTreeView does detect it (yay) and it is now showing in device manager and fastboot devices lists it.
Hopefully now I will be able to "talk" to the nexus and get twrp/ROM back installed - at least there is a glimmer of hope.
Thanks
