I think you really misunderstand what A2SD actually does.
If you consider a Note 1 running Gingerbread or ICS, it has 16GB of storage just like the Note 2, but was partitioned in such a way that the lions share of the additional space was on a partition that appeared to be an SD card to the OS and apps (the so called, internal SD card). When you used A2SD on the Note 1, it moved the bulk of the app from the smaller /data partition to the larger /sdcard partition, but it was still taking up space on your "internal" 16GB of storage, and not on the real "external" MicroSD card.
Fast forward to the Note II, the 16GB storage is not split in the same way, so essentially /data and /sdcard are on the same partition.
So, switching from JB to ICS won't mystically make A2SD available on your external MicroSD.
The best ways of achieving the effect you desire is either to "swap" the internal and external SD cards, or to use DirectoryBind in order to make specific directories on your external SD card appear as if they are on the internal storage.

Dave

How can I "Swap" internal SDCards?
DirectoryBind works partially now.. as it just support "sdcard" folder.. while actuall data is on /data/ folder which is not supported by DirectoryBind and DB is not supported by developer anymore
edit: Oh when I say SDCard I mean external SDCard not SDCard of phone.... [Sorry I am totally new to Android. Ex iPhone user.]
Rom toolbox also has the option of app2sd I dunno if you've tried that option or not.

That's not true.
/sdcard can be changed to any prefix in the preferences.

I'm sure there's an XDA link/tutorial for this, but I couldn't find something "local".

I would like to add a question to this thread
Is there a way to get ICS on Note 2 GT-7100 by any chance? I use Game-Cih3 speed hack for almost every game as well other apps at times and GAME-Cih doesn't work on Jelly bean. Works on ICS and Gingerbread. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

how does Apps2SD work when you have internal memory and an SD Card?
If you don't have an SD card, do the apps go to internal Memory.
Just curious how this all works since my current phone doesn't have internal RAM.
What I would like to do is keep Music/videos in one storage and apps in the other.
Since the phone has 16GB storage on it, theres no reason to use App2SD at all. You can run all your apps off the phone's 16GB storage.
The 16GB (actually ~11.5GB) comes up as "USB Storage" in Settings > Storage if thats what your wondering.
An SD card will show up separately under SD Card. Though in a file manager, the 16GB onboard shows up as your storage, the SD card under an "external sd" folder

I cant possibly see why anyone would still use Apps2SD with this amount of internal storage. Accessing apps from an external drive is so much slower.
Actually there is only 2 gb of storage for apps. The rest of the internal memory is for media and other files. If you choose to install to SD it will install to external SD card.

Yes there is 2gbs for apps. If u use app2sd u can put the apps on the other internal partition thy has 11gb. Works for me when I tried it.

This is good to know. So based on all the other comments, Apps go to the internal memory or the extended internal memory and I can keep music/video/books on SD.
thanks all.
Finally got hands on with phone. I noticed the internal memory is listed as USB storage but when I go to app management it doesn't give me the option to move apps out of ram to USB memory, just move to SD card.
What gives?
How do they get away with saying it's 16GB internal when it's actually 11.5GB?
Its pretty amazing how much this phone brings to the table... 1gig ram, 16gig internal storage.. this phone keeps.blowing me away, it really does. I am very impressed with samsung. I would be running roms on my evo and it didn't have enough ram to hold the contents of a web pagr if I multi tasked to xda. I would hold the home button and fast switch to the internet again and the browser would have to load it all over again instead of having enough ram to just keep it there. I'm inlove haha

I'm not exactly sure how it works but I think 2gig is partuined for apps and some more for the rom right?
This hasn't worked for me. Everytime I try to move apps to internal storage, it says that there is no sd card inserted, and I need to insert one.
Can some suggest a good way to use the memory?
The Incredible had 8GB internal but the phone was setup never to use it, except for pictures. Everything went on the SDcard. I bought the Incredible used and the guy did a full reset from with in Android but when I got it the internal memory was still full of pictures, unfortunately nothing X-rated or blackmailable.
The E4GT is just as *ssbackwards. In / you have an sdcard which is internal storage. In sdcard you have a link for ext_sd and usbStorage. I put my Music in usbStorage and no music app can find it. How crazy is that? I just want one sdcard link that actually goes to the sdcard, that I would use for Media. The internal sdcard memory used for /data and a home folder. Come on Samsung, doesn't that make more sense?

+1. I too would love to know if there's a "best practice" for how to manage the storage memory on the EG4T. Should I just put all media in the onboard USB storage, and then only use my SD card as overflow, or are there certain things that might be better put on the SD card? I'm probably overthinking this, but I'd like to get a handle on this now while the device is new and I don't have much on it yet.

I have filled the internal sd with some games and have room on external sd how do I transfer aps from internal sd to external sd? I have searched found some things about a apk converter??? I love the 16gb internal but it is not enough for my needs. I did see the adb method to swap internal and external sd cards.

The rom takes up about 3 gigs (just under) and 2 gigs are partitioned for apps. The rest is partitioned as USB Mass Storage (11.5) So 11.5+2+2.5 = 16, thats a rough estimate of how it breaks down anyways. The OS is usually between 2.5-3 gigs depending on how much the manufacturer adds to it. Stock Android is 2 gigs. Sammy doesnt add major bloat so it comes out to like 2.5 to 2.65 gigs. Motorola however usually comes out to 2.75-3 gigs. Which is why I like Sammy. ICS is about 3 gigs stock though, so remember that when you decide to upgrade to ICS later on. You'll be sacrificing memory on a device that wasnt built for it. Sammy added that extra memory for when ICS does come out, just in case. They were aware of the extra memory in ICS.
Hey guys just got my Galaxy Nexus for Verizon. It obv does not come with an SD card, something I am not accustomed to.
I am wondering if there is some way to maybe partition the internal memory so when doing wipes and installing roms, that partition of memory is not affected.
Thanks for any help!
Doing wipes and rom installs doesn't affect the sdcard, only the internal memory that holds the os/apps gets wiped, so there's no need to partition anything. Its only when you format the sdcard is when you lose everything on it.

I think he's asking if there is a way to make the internal memory set up to have a portion of it look like an external ad card... ie splitting the partition one says internal memory the second would be fake sdcard memory

If virtual sdcard had its own partition it would theoretically then be possible to treat it as a real usb mass storage device like a real sdcard.

Hi Guys,
After using an Motorla Atrix 4G for some time I purchased a Note 2. Been using it for a few days now I have a question.
My Atrix had a 2gb partition for apps. The remaining space was mounted as sd-card and external cards as sdcard-ext.
Is it possible to create this for the Note 2 as well? Or are we stuck with the current layout (expect for the SD card mount change trick.)
Thx in advance

whats wrong with the current layout?
i find the current layout to be much better. on the 2gb partition layout on my atrix 4g and my note 1, i was constantly bombarded with out of space error messages. by unifying the partitions into one storage partition, we can now install 16gb worth of apps instead of 2gb worth of apps without having to mess with apps2sd, which means its a lot harder to hit the out of space error message.
Hi,
The thing is I have installed a few (large) games and some apps and allready I am almost out of diskspace. My thoughts would be to mount the internal memory indeed as one big partition but as an "apps" partition so the sdcard can be mounted as "sdcard" and store big files.
Just so that all the storage can work as intended.

if you look around on these forums (may not be note 2 specific, may also be in s3 forums), there are a few mods going around. One involves kinda linking your SD card as a folder in the internal memory, the other involves swapping your SD card and internal memory around (allowing up to 128gb as your main partition), i think the latter one might help you.
Hi thx for the reply but that not what I am after. When changing the mount from the external card to the internal memory path u do indeed get hoops of storage but u will sacrifice the internal memory.
The one-x for example also uses a 2gb data partition for app storage and the rest is data partition for (mounted as SDCARD) storing app and game data.
My idea is to change the internal memory of the Note2 to a data partition and the external memory (sdcard) to a proper sd-card mount.
Is this possible?

You cannot use the system partition as it's reserved for the OS.Don't mess up with it, doing so may/will brick your phone If you are on Stock or ANY ROM with App2SD support you can move apps to External SD Card. Check whether your ROM supports App2SD or not.

I can't, that's why, app2sd move em' to "sdcard0" which means (in my phone) emulated/0/ (Folder) and not to the external sd card. Already tryied many ways and still same, and well so.
What i wanted to do? as "system" is the internal storage i wanted to merge it with "emulated" which is the internal storage but in a partition to emulate a External SD Card so if its only 1 internal storage the microSD will work as it should work, because on my older phone(Ice mobile apollo touch) I was able to see apps, data, etc, on microsd as only had 1 internal storage.. Now as the sdcard is even in the internal , the external is empty. Its a problem too for cracked applications that need data/obb.

4.2.2 supossed to be stock, downloaded from sammobile to my operator/country as my ROM was literaly "f*ck*d" for a stupid thing i did so.
I just searched GT-i9080L and the latest android(4.2.2) was the one i downloaded, btw, the partition came with the phone, wasn't made by me or a rom and also, the phone didn't come new, i bought it from 2nd hand.
In Grand Internal memory will be shown as sdcard0 and External memory will be shown as sdcard1. Is external storage i.e. Sdcard1 mounting for you?

If i use a explorer i can only see 2. SDCard and internal memory, if i search through internal memory i'll find a folder called emulated, inside, another called 0, inside, all the things that should be on sdcard, which means that this "emulated" emulates a sdcard inside the phone. and yeah, external sd = sdcard1.
internal sd(emulated) = sdcard0
internal memory = internal memory o.o
External is actually /extSdcard on stock ROMs afaik.

I know right, but it isn't used as Sdcard, the sdcard that it uses its a emulated sdcard INSIDE the internal memory.

Alright, I just got my Asus Zenfone 2E from Wal-mart about four days ago and I've already rooted it on day three, to fix some issues with SD Card write and read permissions.
But my biggest issue is the emulated sd card, I thought that "Move to SD" meant moving the app to External SD card not Internal SD card or the emulated storage.
My question is, can I use root apps to move them to the real SD card for more storage space or use some kind of partitioning mod or app to redo the space to my liking?.
Thanks if you help me out, and I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S2 (Straight Talk) Phone.

Depends on the ROM you use. My Resurrection Remix on Zenfone 2 needs Fat32 on both partitions.
However make sure you look at Link2SD guides as some say you can use Ext 2, Ext 3, or Ext 4 for the second partition.

Using the stock ZenUI Rom from day one but I'll fire up EaseUs partition master on my laptop and see what I can use partition wise.

Sorry for double posting but I just ran into a issue, I made a 10 GB Fat32 second part on my 64 GB card and then the rest was the first part. But moving Facebook back to the internal storage cause a RR (Random Reboot) and my two test apps, Astro and Amazon Underground, had the grey android icon with an sd card icon, and tapping on the icon pops a toast message saying "App not installed"
I'm using the true stock ROM WW_12.16.5.118_20151204 firmware, rooted and Xposed on 5.0.1
Edit: just learned that I never installed busybox after installing the true stock Rom on my ZenFone 2e. I think that's why it failed to link sometimes.
