Ask ANY question related to root, kernels, recovery, any roms, battery issues etc.
Don't think that if you post your question in this thread it won't get answered. If you feel an urge to start a "new" thread for each question thinking that people will answer that quickly or something like that then you are mistaken. Don't worry and ask away here!
No one person is responsible if your phone becomes a shiny black brick..Neither me nor anyone answering question.
Any one can answer questions and point users in the right direction.
Although it is encouraged to search and research before asking, I can understand that maybe you feel overwhelmed by your search results and just want to make sure before you do anything stupid or are just confused by all the answers you find
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Oh and about the search function. Some tips. There are different ways to do a search on Xda.
-Site wide search which is on the top right corner and looks like this -
This search is useful for apps and such which are not necessarily device specific.
-Another search option is to search within the forum for example search in "Epic 4G Touch Q&A". This will search all threads created in this forum. It looks like this right above the threads.
-Third search option will show up where you see the option above when you are in a particular thread. It is the most useful when you are in a ROM thread an looking for some help specific to that rom.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Goal here is to stop repeatedly asked questions in Q&A forums AND have all the questions in one place. Chances are high that the issue you are having was already experienced by someone else and the answer is somewhere in the forums.
Post 2 will have all the common questions/answers. New FAQs will be added as I come across something noteworthy.
Post 3 will have all the questions/answers that other members have asked. I will link to posts from within the thread here so you don't have to go looking for them.
Please let me know about any errors or recommend changes. I am all ears.
________________________________________________________________
Thanks to all whose threads I have linked below.
General Q&A
Ok here we go: Most common questions. I will be adding more from time to time.
Q. How do I root my phone?
A. The safest and easiest way to obtain root is to use one of the stock Odin one clicks. They are all found here. That thread has all versions listed. You want to use the one-click for the version you have. There are 2 versions. No data version will save all your user data. Use that only if you need to root your current version. Not recommended when downgrading versions.
Alternate Method:-
This is not recommended for first time users. Its a bit complicated but not hard.
-You need the EL26/29 kernel with CWM(linked below), CWM SuperSU zip, and stock kernel for the build you are on. By stock kernel, I mean for example if you are on unrooted ICS FL24 then you need the FL24 Stock kernel in a zip format. All these files need to be on your SD Card before you begin. All files can be found at rwilco12.com.
-Flash the EL26/29 kernel first using mobile odin kernel slot or desktop odin PDA slot.
-Boot into recovery.
-Flash zip from internal/external SD card.
-Find the SuperSU zip file and flash it.
-Now remember to not reboot. Flash the stock kernel zip.
-Now you can reboot.
Phone will boot up and you are still completely stock but rooted with NO CWM.
Q. Now I am rooted, how do I install clockwork mod (CWM) recovery to flash new ROMs etc? Oh did I mention flash ANY ROM? ICS or JB.
A. There are several ways to do this and need to be careful in choosing the right version. If you are not using a safe recovery then you may brick your phone. More on bricks later.. Before you install cwm you need to decide why you want cwm recovery. Are you just looking to install CWM recovery so you can flash a new ROM? If So.. Follow those steps to be as safe as you can get with flashing new roms.-Make sure you have the ROM zip file already on your SD Card before starting this. Gapps too if it is a CM/AOKP/AOSP based rom.
-Download Mobile Odin Lite from here. You can also download from play store.
-Download GB - EL26 Stock repacked with CWM from here. You want the .tar.md5 file. OR use EG4T-EL29-directbootCWM-v3.tar.md5 md5 - 2b781e4515982a6b7d9586cbb3158647. Direct boot kernel will boot into recovery after flashing in mobile odin.
-Open Mobile Odin and select the kernel slot. Find the file on your sd card and select it.
-Flash firmware. It will take few seconds and phone will reboot.
-Next step is very important..
-Now one thing to keep in mind here is that you just flashed a Gingerbread based kernel. If you are on ICS or JB, your phone will no longer boot. So you want to hold down power + vol up until you see the CWM recovery.
-From here on follow the instructions of the rom you are trying to install.Only follow the above process ANY time you need to flash a new rom.
Any new rom you flash comes with its own recovery which are generally safe to flash different mods etc for that particular rom.
You can also use desktop odin to flash the kernel but it will trigger a yellow triangle and show a flash count which shows how many times you have flashed something custom.
Q. Now that I have my favorite ROM and its all setup... How do I make a nandroid backup?
A. Simple.. Just go to recovery that the rom came with by holding down vol + power up OR most roms have the reboot to recovery option in the power menu. Once in recovery go to backup and restore. Go to backup and let it run. It will take few minutes to complete. Also avoid changing names of these nandroid backups because that could cause MD5 mismatch and you won't be able to restore it.
A nandroid backup is a FULL backup of your phone. It comes very handy if you want to go back to your setup when trying new roms.
Now off to brick related questions.
General advise:- Please please please read the directions of the rom you are trying to flash and ask if you are not sure before you regret making a mistake.
Q. I flashed something (lets say you were on some ROM and decided to try a new kernel) and now all I have is a Samsung boot logo and my phone is stuck on it for few mins...
Am I bricked?? Did I brick it for good?
A. In most cases, No. If you see the Samsung boot logo then you are lucky and what you likely have is "Soft" brick. You can recover from this. You can do different things to fix this. If you are not sure and do not feel confident and just want to get your phone working to take a breather, follow this..
-Download EL29 rooted Odin one click to a pc. (you should always keep a copy on your pc)
-Put your phone into Odin download mode by holding power + vol down until you see a screen asking you to press vol up to continue.
-Open the one click .exe file.
-Plug your phone into your pc using an usb cable.
-Wait for drivers to install if you don't already have. Be patient.
-You should see COM:XX where XX is port number. Doesn't matter what number. Now be patient and wait a min or 2. (Sometimes I have seen the COM:XX disappear and then comeback due to some driver reloading..)
-Press start and wait for the flash to complete. *DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES MOVE YOUR PHONE AROUND THAT THE CABLE COULD UNPLUG.
*MAKE SURE BATTERY HAS GOOD CHARGE.
*MAKE SURE PC DOESN'T RESTART.
*If the process is interrupted, you will brick your device for sure depending on where odin was in the flash process and it will be hard to fix it or impossible.-You should wait till phone reboots by itself. Device can be unplugged then.
Another thing you could do to recover from a soft brick is just go into recovery and restore your nandroid backup that you had created.
Q. Ok so now what is "hard" brick?
A. To explain it in simple words.. if you get a flashing blue led and nothing on the display, cannot go into odin mode or recovery then you have a hard brick. For more info refer to this thread and this thread
User Questions
Q: I want CWM which will run with my current version of stock rom. I don't care about EL26 kernel w/cmw. Where do I get it?
A: First of all, I don't see why you would need a kernel with cwm if you are on a stock rom. There is no use as the kernel is not considered safe to perform most functions. But if you still want it.. You can get it here - [KERNELS][CWM][ODIN] Kernel Repository - Download Them All Here and flash it using mobile odin as described in post 2.
Q: I am running AOSP/AOKP/CM based rom and my data is slow. Also my 3g/4g is not working. Oh yeah and I never get a GPS lock. I don't want to go back to stock touchwiz! Please HELP!!!
A: Well you can't update profile and prl using AOSP/AOKP/CM based rom and it has to be done from touchwiz based roms. But there is some good news. You can temp boot to stock EL29 rom and do whatever you want to such as use dialcodes, update profile/prl etc. Temp boot means that you will be able to boot 1 time to EL29 and then next time you boot, you will be back on whatever rom you were on. Follow this simple video to do this.
Also you can try different modems which you can flash in CWM or ODIN. Get them here- [MODEMS][CWM][ODIN] Modem Repository - Download Them All Here
Q. How do I disable the annoying OTA update notifications? They always comeback even after clearing the notifications..
A. It is very easy. Thanks to an apk or a zip created by rocket321 you can disable them permanently. Here is the quote and the post..
[How-to] Disable OTA updates on Stock + Rooted ROMs
rocket321 said:
1. Download FOTAKill.apk and copy to your Phone/SD
2. Use a root explorer (such as ES Explorer) to copy the file to /system/app
3. If the update already downloaded, delete it from /cache
4. reboot
*Credit for the apk goes to the CM team and or whoever creates the gapps packages!
Alternate method if you have a custom recovery:
1. Download the Disable.OTA.Updates.zip file and flash in CWM (this will install fotakill and clear cach for you)
*Thanks to tdunham for alternate method!

Q. There are so many modems and with the JellyBean leaked modems, things got real confusing. What modems can I use with which ROM?
A. Just remember one thing. With the leaked JB stock samsung builds and custom TouchWiz ROMs based off of these leaked builds, you can ONLY use the leaked JellyBean modems. These leaked JellyBean modems will NOT work with ANY previous GB and ICS builds or AOSP JellyBean ROMs.
Note:- You CANNOT flash any modem using the EL29 directboot kernel.

Hey BluesRulez, you might want to add the descriptor for our phone describing for the newb what it is and is not. That the Epic 4G Touch is Sprint USA's version of the Samsung Galaxy SII (Model SPH-D710). What I mean is at least a couple of times a week we see someone who has flashed an international version of a ROM or kernel and borked their phone.
Thanks for the work and contributions. Hope more will come and contribute and more importantly read this too.
Current problem: My girlfriend woke up to realize that her alarm hadn't gone off and her phone was locked up tight and wouldn't respond to anything. After a battery pull, it would only boot to the splash screen.
Background: Her phone has only been flashed a couple of times. She was on Calk 2.8.1 and 2.9 almost forever. Odin one click for a fresh start before going to Recaulked 1.8. (w/ included Agat 5.4 kernel). Version 1.9 had just come out, but was based on a leak and had warnings about bootloops, so we went with 1.8. After a couple of weeks she started having problems when trying to do almost anything, it would try to open the clock. It would also freeze up. She removed clock and installed a 3rd party clock. She started having the problem again. She kept putting off my request to install alogcat.
What has been done so far: Two finger salute into recovery, tried to run a backup. It failed to mount system. I tried a recovery. It stuck at writing system. I had to battery pull. USB jig does put it into download mode. I have stopped there. It sounds like the system partition (or part of it) is borked. This phone has not had a flashhappy life.
Best way to proceed?: Should I find an unrooted stock to odin to and visit a sprint store? I know Vanberge bricked on the Agat 5.4 kernel and read most of that thread back a while. 1.8 was still current when it was flashed and it was the last thing that was flashed, so there hasn't been anything to call MMC_CAP_ERASE. Nothing had been flashed since the beginning of September.
As a recap, this phone has never had anything on it but stock, Calk, and ReCalk. All help will be appreciated.
Edit: I am not blaming anyone for anything. I am trying to decide how to go forward. If it was just bootlooped, I would have Odined and flashed to a newer version of the ROM. With the problems that our phones have had and the fact that it doesn't seem to want to mount "system", I decided to ask before moving forward. I know repartitioning is possible. If there is a way that a developer can learn more about the problem since it is still in pre-permabrick state, let me know.

I just copied and pasted to here. I think that ReCalk 1.8 is based on FH13? but will have to double check.
If a mod would like to delete the other duplicate post, please do. I am not trying to spam the boards.
Thanks to any and all who help.
Followup: My girlfriend started to have the clock issue again with her new phone. Once again, it never happened when I was there. After asking her all sorts of questions, she mentioned vlingo. It ended up being her charger at work. There was a bent pin and it tried to put the phone into dock mode. Long term use must have shorted the usb port. Her phone was charging (with a good cable) when it was locked up. I don't know exactly how this caused it, but at least there is some explanation now.

You tried to run a backup in recovery and that's when you saw that error. Not sure what you exactly mean by that. Making a backup at this point is useless IMO.

I also tried to restore a backup. That is why I was concerned is that it wouldn't mount the system when I was trying to restore. I have seen people talk about custom pit files because of part of a partition being borked. From what I read, it seemed, further flashing could destroy more of the file system.
Edit: I tried to do a backup, because it had been a while since one was done, and if I could do a backup, I could look into possibly extracting anything important that my girlfriend needed. That part wasn't really important, I just included that I had attempted it for thoroughness.

Thanks, that is one of the threads that I was planning on reading into more post homework. I think that I only made it through 30 or so pages of that thread a couple of months ago. I haven't been able to stay current on all the info, so I asked hoping someone would be able to point me in the right direction. Have a good evening and thanks for the help.
Bump!!!
This deserves a bump to the top...hopefully it will become a sticky soon....
Very nicely done BluesRulez!
PS.... Moble ODIN is the bomb!!!!
Well I don't understand why people don't ask here?? If folks don't start using it, I might just ask mods to delete this.. there is no point to keep this...

lol good concept to have one thread but kinda pointless when there a whole section dedicated to q & a that is also noob friendly.. good try tho .. agreed for the one guy that did post his issue.. just go into dl mode and flash el29 one click.. your phone clearly didnt get hit with the eMMc bug since you not hard bricked and you werent flashing something and the phone was just sitting

Old age creeping up on me, I could've sworn that MiguelHogue posted here already about the battery spin test. LOL
We need a section for 'My battery life is horrible' please.
How to check your battery... is it the battery or the rom... is it an app or is it the battery (run stock for a while to be certain).
I always lead off with:
As our phones are getting older, I've been seeing a lot of battery failure issues. If your phone battery is over 10 months old, more than likely it is time for a new battery.
Lately, I've also been seeing a ton of power button failures too btw. All those users holding their power buttons down to boot into recovery I bet. Lately, I've been getting into the habit of only using the software solution to boot into recovery since most extended toggles include it on custom roms. If I'm running without extended toggles, I always download the app 'Quickboot'. It saves from having to press and hold our aging power and volume buttons down while waiting for the recovery screen to pop up.

I have decided to open a Questions and Answers thread on this section of the forum. This is a good way to keep the number of new threads with questions down to a minimum, which will make new threads essentially for people that are contributing to the Samsung Epic 4G. This includes, but is not limited to, people that are providing the following:
- Roms & Kitchens
- Programs & Apps
- Fixes & Tweaks
- Skins & Themes
- Tips & Tricks
I would like to request the help from other members to keep the thread in order and in check. This will have the added side effect of creating an ever self updating knowledge base that will far extend the content of the Wiki. This will in turn save us from having to answer the same question a billion times...
Please refer to the Wiki first before asking any questions though! It can be located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700

Unfortunately, we don't have anyone in the community who has inside access to that information. Some of our members are affiliated with Sprint, and so have slightly more reliable rumors, but even their sources have thus far been wrong if they quoted a specific date...
So I hope you understand that I'm not being a jerk when I say, we won't know until it actually happens (and this will probably always be the case)
That being said, this most recent leak (DK28) seems stable so far IMO, so it could potentially become our official update
ok im a total noob to all this stuff. i followed the guide to update my epic to 2.2. the problem is, that the camera, gallery, and a couple other apps dont work. Can someone help me? Should i go back to 2.1, if so, how do i do that?
EDIT: Angry rant removed, thanks to the mods for a quick response (and to the member who's post was removed: no hard feelings, I hope you understand)
Just remember to read before posting, to make sure your post will be relevant and not redundant

Whenever flashing a ROM using either recovery, it's always a good idea to wipe the phone (as in factory reset - I'm not referring to wiping the cache or the dalvik cache, although both steps are also usually recommended)
If you used the odin method described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861213
then you might have flashed the wrong tar - DK05 and DK17 both had the camera problem, make sure you have the DK28 file.
If you have the right tar, then you could have an incomplete download... I doubt that though, when that happened to me, my phone wouldn't boot at all. But you might want to redownload the tar just to be sure (double check the filesize after it finishes and before you flash, if it seems too small then it messed up again)
That's the best general advice I can offer, but if you'd like to provide more details about the method you used (especially a link to the guide you used, if it isn't the one I provided), someone here might be able to identify where you're going wrong
i followed the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861213. i didnt use odin, i just used the .zip method. it took me a lot of tries cause i kept getting errors. the second mirror link worked for me, but like i said, my camera, gps, gallery and some other apps dont work.
oh and everytime i try to flash again, i get the error.
It sounds like you're either starting from the wrong rom or not wiping the phone before flashing the zip. All of the zip updates I have seen require you to start from DI18 stock (root an clockwork seem to be okay in my experience, all other mods must be removed) - if you have installed any custom roms, your best bet is to follow the odin method using the stock DI18 tar - so you may as well just skip the zip methodand odin to the stock DK28 tar
And you absolutely must wipe the phone (again, factory reset - I suspect many people are just wiping the cache and/or the dalvik cache).

Odin flashing
I've got a quick question. I'm looking to move to a build using the DK28 information release and it requires that I update the pit and modem files on my phone using Odin. Do I need to flash a 2.2 rom right away or am I safe to boot into my current rom first?

Are you doing the strictly odin method (full froyo in a tar file)? Or an update.zip?
The odin method *should* include the modem and everything (and you use the updated pit in the same process) - you'll have to read the particular thread that you got the download link from, but I haven't noticed any odin tar files that required the modem separately
For the update.zip method, I don't know if it matters whether you flash the modem before or after applying the zip through recovery - I don't think either one overwrites the other, but that's a part of the process I can only guess about. But regardless of when you odin flash the modem, that's when you'll use the new pit file (the same as the odin-only method above).
As far as I know, the primary difference is that the update.zip doesn't inherently overwrite user data (but you'll probably have broken programs that FC all the time, which means a wipe is necessary, making this somewhat null). I prefer the odin method because it is a fresh flash of the entire system (I usually let it repartition as well - no one else has posted about that feature so I have no idea if it's a fluke that it hasn't given me problems)
Hope that helps
which is the best
so i have updated to dk28 froyo 2.2 i like battery life and performance can anyone offer info on which is the best rom for me or just some insight on which rom is the best overall
How do I stop running applications from starting every time I restart my phone?? How I understand it, especially with Froyo, you shouldn't have to kill programs in the background, if said 'background' process or service is working normal or efficiently. I still kill the DRM process when I reboot my phone, and not sure if it's still causing drain issues.
Also (someone else confirm this), I believe that constantly 'killing' certain background processes actually uses MORE battery, since it has to constantly restart itself. I've had a much more stable device *not* using auto killers, and just sniping one here and there that I know to cause drain.
Some reading material on GC, tho, in regards to memory management

A lot of it is personal preference - this early in the game, the primary differences between the roms are going to be mostly cosmetic. So for now, the best advice I can offer is to try each of them and decide which theme you like. Regardless of how you upgraded, you had to use odin, so you have succeeded at the most difficult step of the process - and odin can bring your phone back to life if something goes wrong, so it's an invaluable skill to have.
In the meantime, keep watching the threads (quietly, unless you have a question that hasn't been asked already - we're working on cleaning up the forum to make it easier for everyone to find answers... but I digress...)
It's too early to be sure of any of the fixes out there - we have at least three separate fixes for the GPS issues; some people find success with one, others with another, and a lucky few don't need the fixes at all... so in summary, we can't say which is better or worse just yet, stay tuned and decide whether you want to experiment on the bleeding edge, or wait for these things to be stable and thoroughly tested.
And if you have any doubts, just stick with the stock DK28 for now
tl;dr, questions in BOLD.
Okay, after spending the entire night scouring the internet/this forum and starting from absolutely zero-knowledge about the Android OS, I managed to update my Epic to 2.2, and root the phone. Now, I'm kinda stuck as far as customization goes. I see all these cool skins and battery life mods and stuff, but they don't exactly offer any steps as to how to install them. Since I don't exactly know what file-types do what, I'm kinda shooting blindly at trying to update/install something "custom" onto the phone. So, my question(s) is/are:
What does the ROM do?
What does the ROOT do?
I know the root basically "unlocks" your phone, but that's all I know. The process of customizing the phone still remains a mystery. (that's the problem with following step-by-step instructions, rather than actually knowing what you're doing.)
I also don't understand the purpose of flashing a phone. Flashing, in my experience is to update something, like say a BIOS. But that sets the system back to square 1 as far as all settings go, in this particular example.
If I flash, with say Odin, after having updated to DK28 and "rooting," won't this make all the "customization" that I've done prior basically 'null' because I've just flashed the phone into a blank-state?
Sorry if these are questions easily answered by searching, but I just spent my entire sleep-cycle trying to find the answers to these questions, and managed to only get so far. I look forward to the answers On another note, I am now EXTREEEEMELY pleased with my phone. Before this evening, I was just the regular, old run-of-the-mill enduser. I liked the cool built-in customizations and all the apps and what not, but never dreamed of being able to customize my phone to THIS EXTENT. So, now it's something I'm very interested in doing..it makes my phone truly mine.

Did you see the link to the Wiki in the original post of this thread? That's where I started when I first got here, it helped me understand the basics.

It depends on what you flashed with Odin. If you only flash a modem file, then your customizations and apps are untouched. If you flash an entire ROM in "tarball" form then not only does it re-write the modem but it also overwrites all user data. Think of the latter as resetting the phone to stock and works even if you cannot boot up.
When can we expect a custom Kernel with netfilters for wifi tethering?
n00b question.
If an SDK version is released (say, like, Gingerbread today), does that mean chefs could take it and cook up a ROM for ANY phone (say, like, the Epic)? Or do they need something else to do that?
Remove Touchwiz Launcher (consequences?)
Hey-- I'm using Quantum 2.0.0 ROM, and I never use the touchwiz launcher. Does anyone know if it's safe to just remove the apk? (TouchWiz30Launcher.apk) or is there other functionality tied to it?
I use LauncherPro, fyi.
Please forgive my ignorance... I've searched the forums, looked at the wiki...
I use titanium backup and am now running the DK27 froyo build by noobnl. My question... How do I restore my e-mail accounts to the phone everytime without having to re-type them in? I've been flashing a rom every other day on average since I got the phone and it's getting REALLY old.

Preface:
I made this guide to be a collection of information for the latest rooting methods as well as common questions and problems that arise from rooting/flashing/etc. Please read the entire guide if you are new to rooting. Also the common questions and problems are found in posts 2 and 3 of this thread. I hope you find this to be helpful. Happy and safe rooting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rooting Information
What is rooting and why should/shouldn't I do it?
Rooting is a way of gaining access to the root directory of your phone enabling you to change every aspect of your phones software that the manufacturer has locked. This enables you to do many things with your device that the manufacturer did not intend. Here are some reasons why people root and why people don't.
Reasons to root:
Get the latest versions of Android on your phone before anyone else.
Try faster and more optimized versions of your phone's software.
Overclocking and underclocking your phone.
Longer battery life.
Theme your phone a lot more.
FREE Wireless Tethering.
Remove unwanted Sprint software.
Reasons to NOT Root:
Not comfortable with troubleshooting your phone and phone problems.
Do not have the time to spend going through countless forums to find solutions to problems.
Possibility to break your phone permanently causing you to go back to Sprint (IF YOU HAVE INSURANCE) to get another one or buy another if you don't have insurance.
VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY WITH SPRINT. (Can be undone)
Very time consuming and addicting.
Do not know what a "driver" is for a computer.
Have no knowledge of DOS.
So how do I root?
-Don't use any method just because the guide says "ROOT METHOD". Make sure its the latest root method used for your situation. Even this guide will get outdated one day (I'll try my best to keep it up to date).
-Rooting will cause all your information to be lost if you did not properly back them up. You will lose anything saved on the phone, such as contacts (not synced to Google) and applications and settings. Anything on your SD card will still be there such as music and pictures and video.
Basic terminology:
ROM - The phone's software
Flashing - Installing. Pertains to ROMs, kernels, radios, themes, etc.
0) Make sure you have at least 30% battery. You do NOT want to have your phone die when flashing. Your phone will turn into a very pretty and expensive paperweight.
1) Turn on your phone and hit Menu > Settings > About Phone > Software information. Make a note of your Baseband Version, Kernel version, Software Number, and PRI Version. Now press your BACK button and go to Hardware information. Look for your 4 digit Hardware Version. Write this down too. This information is helpful when troubleshooting issues you may have.
2) Power your phone off. Hold VOLUME DOWN and your POWER button till you see the following screen

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

This is called the Bootloader Screen. Remember it. You will see it very often. There are two pieces of crucial information on this screen that you will be concerned with. On the first line, you will see S-ON. This stands for Security-ON. It means you are not rooted more or less. On the second line you will see "HBOOT #.##.####" This is your HBOOT version number.
3) Now that you have this information, it is time to pick your root method. You only need to root once and only need to pick ONE of the following methods.
Revolutionary: - This will unlock the bootloader for the latest stock GB. Follow all instructions to the letter.

IF YOUR VERSION IS BEFORE 4.22.651.2, UPDATE YOUR PHONE USING OTA THEN ROOT USING REVOLUTIONARY!!!!!!
PLEASE NOTE THAT WHEN YOU GO TO THESE RESPECTIVE LINKS, MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE STILL UPDATED! CHECK THE LAST PAGE OR 3 TO SEE IF IT IS STILL UPDATED. IF NOT SOMEONE WILL GENERALLY SAY IT IS OUTDATED. SUPPORT FOR THE ROOT METHODS SHOULD BE DONE ON THEIR RESPECTIVE PAGES OR IN THE Q+A PAGE. ALSO MOST ISSUES YOU WILL RUN INTO, SOMEONE ELSE PROBABLY ALREADY HAS SO PLEASE USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION.

How do I know if I am rooted?
Go into Bootloader. If you see S-OFF at the top, you are fully rooted.
I am rooted now. What can I do?
FIRST MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP! ALWAYS DO THIS BEFORE YOU FLASH SOMETHING. THESE ARE BIG FILES SO TRANSFER THEM TO YOUR COMPUTER TO SAVE SPACE ON YOUR SD!
A nandroid backup basically takes a snapshot of your phone which you can restore. While it will fix most problems, it is not a cure all. It will fix most if not all ROM flashing blunders.
How do I make a Nandroid Backup?
1) Power off your phone.
2) Hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER to till you see the Bootloader screen.
3) Use VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN to navigate to RECOVERY and push the POWER button to select.
4) Once in Recovery, Look for an option that says NANDROID or NANDROID BACKUP.
5) Select that and hit power.
6) Wait till your NANDROID BACKUP is finished and then proceed to flashing anything you want.
7) ALWAYS DO THIS BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING.
8) If you run out of space on your SD card, your backups are saved to your SD card under the Nandroid Folder. Back up this folder to your PC.
OK. I made my Nandroid Backup. What can I do now?
You can now flash custom ROMs, kernels, radios, themes, etc.
If you aren't sure what a ROM/Radio/Recovery is check out ricsim78's post here:

Here is a great guide on kernels. Kernels are what you want to flash if you want to improve battery life.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894880 - Kernel information. What each does and what each stands for?
Here is where you can find most of the goodies here on XDA for the Evo:
Head on over to the Android Development forums for Custom ROMs/Kernels/Radios/Recoveries.
If you want themes, clocks, widgets, UI, etc, head on over to the Themes + Apps forum. Make sure you flashed a "Deodex" ROM for theming.
How do I flash a ROM/Kernel/Theme/etc
99% of all ROM's, kernels and radios come flashable (will be a .zip file).
0) MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 30% BATTERY AT LEAST!
1) Plug your phone into your computer and connect it as Disk Drive.
2) Place your ROM/Kernel/Radio/Theme/ETC into your SD card. (If you have the 4 in 1 option skip to step 5)
3) Power your phone off. Hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER at the same time till you load into Bootloader.
4) Select recovery by using the volume buttons to move and hit the power button to load into Recovery.
5) Once in recovery, make a NANDROID BACKUP and wipe your data/cache/dalvik! If you are flashing an update to your ROM and want to keep your apps, don't wipe your data. If you run into errors or FC (Force closes), wipe your data/cache/dalvik and flash again.
6) Flash your file by going to Install/Flash zip from sdcard.
7) Select your file and hit the power button. Press power again to confirm if needed.
8) Wait till the flash is complete and reboot.
How do I return to stock (unroot)?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218386 Go down to the FAQ. Your answer lies there.
How do I backup my apps?
Use MyBackup. You can use this to backup and restore your apps without the need for rooting. (Thanks teh roxxorz)
Appbrain is good if you are using market only apps. However app data won't be saved.
Titanium Backup is also good if you are rooted.

Common Questions
I am getting an Over the Air (OTA) update from Sprint. Should I accept it if I am rooted?
This is what a Sprint OTA update looks like.
IF YOU ARE ROOTED, DO NOT ACCEPT THIS OTA.
This means that your phone's software is not up to date and it is telling you to update. You must download a ROOTED version of the update and manually flash it. Accepting this will cause you to lose root and worst case, brick your phone. SO DON'T DO IT! lol
This is the link to the latest OFFICIAL ROOTED Sprint ROMs. This will flash a ROOTED 100% stock phone. Meaning it will be rooted but it will be just like your how your phone was before you rooted it. You can NOT remove the Sprint bloatware on the phone. You can also flash a custom ROM with the newest update as its base.

No. Once you are rooted, you are good to go.
I turned my phone into a paperweight/bricked it/"borked" it/its just not working no matter what I do. What can I do?:
If you can still get into your bootloader then you are not bricked! But if you can't get into bootloader and if you have Sprint's Total Equipment Protection Program, you are in luck. They changed their policy on October 23rd. Here are the details of what it covers.
http://www.phonenews.com/sprint-tepsr-changes-next-week-13303/
If the phone is beyond repair, you will have to go through Asurion and pay the $100 deductible. TEP does not cover rooted phones. You have to go through Asurion.
If you don't have TEP, everything except water/fire damage and lost phone replacements cost $35 per incident as long as the phone is not beyond repair. If it is beyond repair, you will have to buy a new phone.
What is PRL?
PRL stands for Preferred Roaming List. Its a list of roaming towers in your area. Its best to keep this updated in crappy coverage areas.
What is PRI?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751935&page=7 <- Debate on what it stands for. (REALLY?!)
In actuality it is called "Product Release Instructions" and is essentially a list of settings for the radio. It's the PRI which uses the PRL to enable data roaming by connecting it to towers/cell sites listed in the PRL and for other things such as to allow calls to interrupt an active data session (ring-through).
How do I update my PRL/PRI?
Go to Menu > Settings > System Updates > Update PRL + Update Profile.
If that doesn't work (and for most, it doesn't), you can always download it from here. Mind you the above steps only work for Sense based ROMs. If you are on AOSP you have to download it from below.

I see "deodex" and "odex" ROMs. What are those?
Basically if you want to theme your ROM you want to use deodexed ROMs. Odexed ROM's are made to be streamlined. There is a performance difference. Deodexed ROM's will take longer to boot up because everything or almost everything is unpacked. Odexed ROM's will boot faster and be more responsive.

Battery - Common Questions and Problems
What is the best ROM + Kernel combination for battery life?
There is no right answer for this. Battery life is affected by so many factors, the only thing you can do is trial and error. Here are most of the factors that can affect battery life:
-Phone Settings (Haptic feedback, screen on duration, auto sync, radios, etc)
-ROMs
-Kernels
-Overclocking + underclocking
-Apps
-Signal strength
-Roaming
-Battery type
-Battery stats
-Calibrating the battery
-PRI
-PRL
-The water you drank the other day
-The **** you took just before
So how do I improve battery life?
#1 Go to the bottom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790427
#2 Adjust your brightness settings, turn off anything you aren't using, use Wifi if it is available (noticeable), set sync frequencies longer, and turn off haptic feedback.
#3 Get some Ebay batteries. They work decently for the price but you may not enjoy carrying multiple batteries around and doing the battery shuffle with your phone.
#4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778466
#5 Seriously go out and buy an extended battery. It is well worth it if you don't care about the increase in size. If you are like me and use the car dock you will get a bit ticked off that you have to switch back to the stock battery and stock cover when you get into your car but its worth it.
#6 You do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around, that's what it's all about!
I bought #3 when I got my Evo at launch. The damn aftermarket batteries lasted longer than my OEM.

ROM Information and Tips Poll of ROM usage: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=951057
Sense ROMs
There are a few flavors of Sense nowadays and you may be confused as to what it all means. If your Evo was fully up to date, it should be on Android 2.2 Froyo using Sense 1.0.
Lately there have been ROM leaks that have pushed it all the way up to Gingerbread 2.3.3/2.3.4 with Sense 3.0. The problem is these are unofficial updates of Sense.
Any leaked ROM will have bugs that must first be ironed out.
Sense 1.0 - Will have everything working. Most of these ROMs optimize performance and are themed with certain mods and tweaks.
Sense 2.0 - Will almost certainly not have 4G working along with other bugs because Sense 2.0 are ported over from other devices who don't use WIMAX. If you need 4G, don't bother flashing a Sense 2.0 based ROM.
Sense 3.0 - Currently there are two leaks that feature Sense 3.0, Kingdom (Evo 3D) and the Sensation leak. The Kingdom leak is the best bet as of now because it has both Android 2.3.3 and Sense 3.0 WITH WORKING 4G! The problem is that it was made for a 3D device so there are bugs that need to be ironed out.
Here are some general guidelines to follow:
If you want stability, stick with a Sense 1.0 ROMs.
If you want to experiment and can do without 4G or don't have 4G in your area, try a Sense 2.0 ROM.
Sense 3.0 is in no way ready for daily use without major bugs.
When picking your Sense ROM from the Android Developer section, make sure you read the titles and the Original Post (OP) by the author of the thread.
They will tell you what the ROM is based off of.
AOSP ROMs (Vanilla ROMs)
AOSP/Vanilla ROMs do not have Sense and is based off the original Android UI. Sense can limit performance and use certain resources. The following two ROMs should be your starting points for AOSP based ROMs as most of them for the Evo are based off Cyanogen Mod (CM). While these have come a long way for the Evo, some functions aren't working such as 720p video recording.

Common Problems:
Standard Troubleshooting For Many Flashing Problems:
-Try Rebooting. Most problem will be solved this way.
-Was it fine before your Nandroid Backup? If so, restore your backup.
-If you flashed something and are having issues, did you wipe your data/cache/dalvik? If not then do it and reflash.
-If you are still getting problems, the file is most likely corrupt or outdated. Try redownloading and making sure the file is updated for your ROM + Version #
-If the file is updated and NOT corrupt, SEARCH FIRST IN THE FORUMS OR GOOGLE! You will be surprised on the answers you can find in 15 seconds of searching.
-Can't find any solution or workaround? Then make a post in that thread with details of your problems, as well as ROM, Hardware version, Hboot #, error messages, etc.

I am getting random Force Closes (FCs) after flashing ****.
Did you wipe your data/cache/dalvik? If not do a Nandroid Restore to the backup you should have done before flashing and then wipe data/cache/dalvik and then reflash. See if you still get a FC. If you do, there might be a problem with whatever it is you flashed with the ROM you are using. Check on the thread you downloaded it from for support.
I am stuck in a boot loop.
If you flashed a new ROM and you are stuck in a bootloop, you probably didn't erase your data/cache/dalvik. Try that and reflash your ROM. This will fix most boot loop issues. If it was from something else, make a post in your respective threads or in Q+A.
I am stuck in a NAND Backup! Lots of "..............."
Pull your battery and restart the backup. You might also want to erase the NAND backup that failed by going to your respective NANDROID backup folder on your SD card.
My 4G isn't connecting and I'm in a 4G city.
Enable your 4G radio. Go to Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks and look under 4G. If you see Scanning... > Connecting to Sprint > Authorizing > Scanning and it keeps repeating, you might have lost your RSA keys. Go back to your home screen, hit Menu > Settings > About phone > Hardware Information > 4G MAC Address. Does it say 00:16:08:00:24:05? If not you are fine and probably don't have a strong enough signal. 4G doesn't penetrate as well as 3G because there isn't that much signal saturation. Also because 4G runs on a higher frequency than 3G and therefore doesn't penetrate as well. (kudos to for reminding me nuformzdesign) If so, you lost your MAC address. Now you need to check if you have your RSA keys.
Go to the Market and download RSA Key Checker by joeykrim. Use this to see if you still have your RSA keys.
If you still have your RSA keys and only need to fix your MAC address IF it is 00:16:08:00:24:05. Go here:

If you lost your RSA keys, there is a restore method but I am not sure if it works. At this point it is your only choice beside returning it to Sprint.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936945&highlight=RSA
OK. That didn't work. What do I need to do before I return this to Sprint?
Unroot your phone using the method above. Return it to Sprint, and tell them you can't connect to 4G and continue playing dumb. Say that you turned it off and turned it back on and no 4G. Also make sure you remove your SD card. If their tech is smart, he will look for signs of root like busybox or SU. So just keep it simple and take your SD card out and give them your phone.
I still have my RSA keys and my MAC address but I still can't connect to 4G.
Go to Menu > Settings > Update Phone > Update Profile. Also do Update PRL. Reboot your phone and try to connect again. If you can't go to Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks. Look under 4G and see if it just gets stuck on Scanning and does NOTHING else. If it does, are you underclocking/undervolting? If so you might have been too aggressive. Revert back to a stock kernel. Check to see if you get your 4G back.
My 4G takes forever to connect. What can I do?
Take a look through this. What this does is basically make your phone check every 15 seconds instead of 300 seconds. Which is why your 4G takes forever to connect when you know you have a strong signal. Be warned however as this will cause your phone to die faster when 4G is on. Or you can update to 3.70.651.1. It has a "widget" that allows you to manually reconnect.

This is a very common issue that happens to a lot of people. You don't need to worry. Nothing is wrong. Sometimes it will persist after you flash a ROM. Restarting your phone will fix the issue. It will always come up when flashing a ROM or restarting. However it won't impede you from using your phone. So the bottom line, don't worry about it.
Very Helpful SHould Be Stickied!
Thanks. Did this in one sitting. Going to add more as time goes on with what I see a lot of being asked here.
stickied stay on topic. @OP ball is in your court. good job
Thank you for this! There have been a few tweaks to some of the root and unroot methods/guides...nice to have them in one place
I have a question. I rooted my phone using these 2 web pages http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496, http://www.thedroiddemos.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=7, which are pretty much the same while i watched the videos djrez has on how to root the evo. I just noticed those 2 threads were posted a while back. Does that mean i should root my evo again using your method?

If you are rooted already, you do not need to update your Root method. You only need to update your ROM.

No. Recovery is different from a ROM. A ROM would be the equivalent to the flavor of OS you are using. Whether it be CM6, Ava v10, Myn's ROM. Look under the Android Development section and go through some of the posts labeled as [ROM]. They have screen shots of the ROM's appearance and some have videos of their use and features.
Some just change the appearance, others increase performance, include apps such as Swype and Hulu, and some change it back to vanilla/ASOP which is a non-Sense ROM that goes back to the traditional Android OS.

What your phone originally came with is called Sense. If it looks anything like it, its a Sense ROM. Original OS looks like the Nexus. As for recommended apps, its hard to say. Everyone has their own preferences so many people flash a ton of different ROM's to find one they like. I personally like Sense so I flash a deodex stock rooted ROM and then proceed to flash themes and remove bloatware with custom kernels.
Just remember to make a Nandroid backup. And then try different ROM's out. Be careful when flashing WIMAX radios. You might lose 4G permanently.

Oh okay yea then I'm using sense Rom not the originally Android OS. To do a nandroid back up isn't that when you hold volume down and power button? I have no idea what kernel is. I'm kinda scared trying new roms cuz I've never tried it before, I definitely don't want to lose 4G that would suck

Yes and no. You hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER to get to bootloader. From there you go to Recovery. Then in Recovery, you will see an option for Nandroid/Nandroid Backup. You make it there.
Losing 4G is thought to be caused by flashing WIMAX radio updates. Kernels should be fine. I lost 4G connectivity because I underclocked too much. ROM's like CM6 just don't support 4G, not that you will lose 4G. AVA's ROM is fine, same with a few others. If you NANDROID back up you should be fine against 99% of the problems out there.

Thanks man, a Nandroid backup should be easy then. I was thinking it was when you save all the files in your SD card to your computer by selecting all and saving on desktop or something but nvm I understand now.
I guess I just have to be really careful when I flash a Rom.

Glad I could help. Like you said. Be careful when flashing and follow all instructions from the devs. You should be fine. I never bricked a phone but I did end up losing my RSA keys for 4G so I had to get a replacement.
Hi everyone. First of all I'm using hardware version 0003. My Baseband is 2.15.00.09.01. Software number 3.30.651.3. Is it possible for me to root this Evo? Please help!!!
Great job on the guide sekigah84! I have update the Universal root so it now works with the 2.02 hboot
I got a serious issue here. When I turn on my phone, it freezes on the black background/white text "Samsung" screen, and won't load the OS and will stay like that until I pull out the battery. I researched on this site how to fix this issue found out about the 3 button combo (Vol +, Vol -, Power), tried it on my phone, and it didn't work.
I'm panicking now since it seems like I seriously bricked my phone. Did I?? Are there any other solutions??
If it helps, here are details how I ran into this issue:
I tried to install Cyanogen mod using ROM Manager, and it rebooted my phone into what I think is the recovery mode. However, I kept getting this "E: signature verification failed" error which I learned later is what Google implemented with Froyo to prevent people from installing custom roms. I did some research, and I found this xda thread on how to fix it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12321787#post12321787
According to "kisfit2000," I needed to download this file called 3e_recovery_installer.zip and run the install.bat file. I did it and ran into the error:
Installing modified recovery
rm failed for /system/bin/recovery, No such file or directory
failed to copy 'C:\User\HomeDesktop\xxx\xxx' to '/system/bin/recovery': No space left on device'
Unable to chmod /system/bin/recovery: No such file or directory

At that point, I gave up and restarted my phone. And that's when the problem began...
Have you looked at this thread? It is a guide on bringing a semi briced epic back from the brink. As long as you can get into download mode and have your pc recognize your phone in odin you should be fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
Edit: I just read the op again and see you are trying the three finger method for a vibrant. The three finger boot to recovery method on an epic it to hold vol-, camera, and power at the same time.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! That was extremely helpful. I tried using the Vol-, camera, and power button like you suggested and it didn't work, but your referral to the other thread did. My phone boots up normally now. Phew.
On another note, is there a newbie guide for flashing custom ROMS for Epic4G? I realized my phone started having issues because I was following the wrong guides for other Samsung Galaxy phones, like Vibrant.
Sweet, glad to hear it. Just check some of the stickies in the epic 4g android development section. You should have cwm 3.1.0.1 to start flashing easily, or the acs 1.0.0.5 recovery is pretty much the same thing, but a bit cleaner and more reliable. Read the op of whatever rom you are installing to be sure of the cleanest way to install that particular rom. There isn't really a master list of everything available, but I would start with some froyo roms as gingerbread roms are still fairly unstable on the epic untill official source drops.
Edit: I'll update this post over the next few minutes with some decent places to start.
Here is a one click root and recovery thread

As long as you have a sign of life it is not bricked...sponged maybe. As for guides, there are a few in the tops of each of the forums in the "stickies". Here is one made by qbking77 with a ton of youtube videos and links on how to do most everything on your epic:

Thanks for the helpful links! I took a look at them and wish I saw these earlier.
Btw, if I wanted to change from one from to another, do I just have to go back into ClockworkMod and just wipe the data/cache, then install the mod? Is there anything else I need to do?
Again, thanks for the help!

You should have no problem with clearing cache and Dalvik cache then flashing another theme. Some apps may be themed in one and not the other so you may get stuck with a themed app or two from a previous theme. You should be able to reflash your ROM if you ever want a clean start again.

I would get in the habit of making nandroids weekly or even fewer between and store them on a pc or dropbox. You can use rom manager to give your backups custom names to help keep track of what each one is if you want to try different roms and such. You should use titanium backup or my backup root to backup data and apps. It comes in handy for quickly restoring those hard to find apps when jumping around roms. The acs recovery is nice as it has a pre rom wipe and pre theme wipe to simlify things. Mainly just keep reading or ask here before doing anything you are unsure of.

I am a noob. There I said it, and I am going to hopefully ask smart noob questions. I have a Samsung SGS II model number SPH-D710; build GINGERBREAD.EL29. I am currently rooted using ODIN 1.81, and I have on hand the firmware to go to stock using ODIN 1.85. On the ODIN 1.85 there is a box that is checked that says rest time. Is that the flash counter that it will rest? There are a bunch of custom roms out there; as you all know, but if I don't like a rom how can I go back to stock? Also I was reading something on this forum I believe that it said don't flash unless you have Rom manager installed. I installed the rom manager, and when I told it to back up rom it started to show the screen that Android has when you do an OTA update, but then it goes to a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. What am I doing wrong? I was able to get out of that screen, but it happened twice so I stopped. As the title says Operation:Not to Brick. Also I have a zImage file that is suppose to give me overclocking abilities. How do you apply that? ODIN 1.85 doesn't acknowledge that it is on my computer. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?
First, never ever ever use rom manager. This phone does not play nice with it and you may end up damaging your phone as a result. Second, always make sure you have reset time in odin unchecked. Im not sure what it does but ive always been told to uncheck it. As far as flashing roms goes, i would suggest checking out qbking77's videos. Hr does a very good job of explaining how to flash a rom. If you dont like the rom and want to go back to stock, i would suggest making a nandroid of your stock rom as it will be easier. Read up on the stickies on the dev page, there is a lot of helpful info that will make it easier to understand.

First off please don't be in a rush to flash to something as soon as you get the phone - it's your easiest case to brick at the moment.
General rules:
Rom Manager = No-No
CWM from an ICS kernel - backups OK, wipes/restores NO GOOD.
(You need to flash a GB kernel before doing a wipe/restore)
ICS Factory Reset - Not recommended.
Doing pretty much anything from Gingerbread - GO TO TOWN!
I'll also suggest stay with stock ROMs and get used to the phone; in the meantime read up on the stickies in General & Q/A. Get a list of any remaining questions, search the threads using the search function and feel free to ask any remaining questions here.
Basically feel comfortable about what you're flashing before you do it. Never hurts to read up more on things before taking an action.... unless you're in a burning building.
I've bricked 3 of these, blue light of death.
First.
'Do not remove the usb from the phone or computer while installing ROMS.'
(Even if your laptop picks now of all times to attempt an hp update, freezing up, tempting you to do so)
Second.
'Do not continue with flashing even if you don't fully understand if the 'partition' checkbox needs to be checked or not using ODIN.'
(Even if you want to flash back to stock because the encrypt feature on your new ics rom doesn't work, along with most of your apps not being compatible. And you can't seem to find anywhere online that states if your ROM needs 'partitioned' or whatever.)
Third.
'Do not remove the usb from the phone or computer while installing ROMS.'
You'd think one bricking would teach a lesson... shame on me.
All in all:
Before you flash a ROM, make sure you know ExActLy how to go back if you don't like it.
Do NOT hit the bong 4 times with your neighbor before attempting anything new.
And for god's sake..
Don't unplug the usb from the phone or computer while flashing ROMS!
You'll do great!

Three times now I have bricked my Samsung S3 (SGH-T999) by flashing a new Rom that should work ok. I flashed my recovery with Multiboot v2.11 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2684052). Booted into Recovery, created the new Rom, selected the new Rom, installed the new Rom and attempted to boot into th new Rom. at that poin t my phone went dark, it would not power up no matter what I did. Plugged in I would see the object "qhsusb_dload" in the Device Manager (Windows 7). From there I learned it was bricked. I have been able to recover in all instances
Can anyone possibly shed some light on what might be going on??
Thanks,
Robert
First thing I'm noticing is you are using multi boot for the I747. Probably doesn't matter much but you really can't know for sure. We gave our own multi boot thread btw.
The only other thing is the roms. You need to tell us exactly what you flashed, how you flashed and what recovery you used. (Links can be a big help so we don't have to spend extra time verifying that we understand correctly which ones you are referring to.

Doc,
Thanks for your reply. My phone is a Samsung S3 (SGH-T999 T-Mobile). To start with, I already had TWRP 2.8 installed.
I followed this link for a starting point: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2646528
Recovery File: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=12831 (d2tmo-twrp2.7-mb-v2.11.zip)
Flashed the new Recovery from the old recovery. No problems installing or using the new recovery.
I had tried Android Revolution HD from (http://joyofandroid.com/10-best-custom-roms-samsung-galaxy-s3/) and soon realized that was for the i9300. Needless to say that bricked my phone the first time. Flashed everything back to stock.
Next I tried FlashingDroid from the same link as above with the same results.
In the Multiboot TWRP 2.7 I would simply do the following:
- Create the Rom Space using the img option
- Set the Rom to the newly created space.
- Flash the new Rom.
- Set Boot to new Rom.
All seemed to go ok, but when it rebooted it was bricked. My phone would not power on either on battery or plugged in. When plugged in I would see an unloaded device named "qhsusb_dload". From what I briefly read on that, it is a very distinct indication that your phone is bricked.
From that point I would image my sd card with a debrick image, reboot into download mode and reflash back to stock...
If there is a better way, please direct me to the correct docs.
Thanks,
Robert
I tried yet again from a fresh flash with the same results. Somethings not right can anyone shed some light on what I might do to be able to use this Multiboot option?
Robert
Never heard of "FlashingDroid" but it is also an i9300 rom. The ONLY roms you should be using are ones in our Development and Original Development sections. Everything in our forums here is as safe as your going to get. (There's always some risk when flashing). I highly recommend Against flashing anything from any other site or Google search.
I didn't look to verify, but I'm betting every rom on that page you linked is for the i9300. Pretty much every time you see something about the S3 online, they are talking about the i9300. They will specifically refer to the model number and/or carrier otherwise.

Doc,
What I really do not understand is how this is bricking my phone. One would think if I reset the Multiboot options back to Internal away from the new Rom I created that it would still be able to boot my original Rom? Isn't that one of the reasons to have a Multiboot feature?
Robert
I'm not completely sure on that one tbh. I do know that just because it's not internal and it's on your SD card, those i9300 roms are not going to work. (I don't use multi boot so I'm not really well versed on how it all works, but if it has to symlink partitions for example, when you try to reboot to the internal rom it would need to reset those links, but if they are linked to the wrong partitions, it probably wouldn't boot at all. Keep in mind that is more a guess, but the logic seems right to me.
Bricks occur because when flashing an i9300 rom, it flashes the kernel to the wrong partition. (One of the bootloaders if I remember right). So if it does operate using symlinks, it'll try to access the bootloader and will get redirected to the i9300 kernel resulting in the inability to boot.

I never heard of multiboot what is it? Is it like a custom recovery. By the way I heard the best custom recovery that is really safe is ClockworkMod you can even flash it as a zip so that it isn't permanent. Bit I'm using it and I haven't found anything wrong with it so far. It even tells you when the ROM isn't the right one for your phone. (Status 7) so that you don't brick your phone.
Just wanted to give you a heads up.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using XDA Free mobile app
I highly suggest reading all the stickied threads for starters. Multi boot has its own thread in development. Cwm is not the only recovery, none are permanent (in the way I'm guessing you referred to it) and all will throw status errors when necessary. All the recoveries are good. Just comes down to personal preference.
