first 24 hours with galaxy S3 - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I upgraded from htc one s to galaxy s3. 3 things I mis ftom my one s.
1) sound quality in the ear piece sounds muffled compaired to one s.
2) I miss the dedicated multitask button on the on s, here I have to hokd down the home button lame
3) musuc audio quality is noticeable wuthout beats audio
Is there a work around for any of these features that I miss from my htc ine s. Also can I do any of this without rooting.
Would like to keep phone original if I can get these to work.
Plus I have not read any information on rooting yet. I do imagine the rooting process has imprived since the S3 came out.
Any links to read on this would be appreciated
Thanks in advance.

1) I have good quality sound with my headset( but I am in a custom rom).
2)Just the way it works on Samsung GS3.
Go Here and you will see my rooting method with links. If new to flashing check out my signature for a comprehensive guide how to.

1. Cant really help you there, I'm happy with mine and haven't read too many complaints from people.
2. You'll get over it, not to sound rude, I missed certain things from my old phone but I got over it and used to the new way I do things.
3. Mess with the equalizer and with root there are sound mods you can install.

I'm on aokp so don't remember how to get to the eq settings for the earpiece. From what I remember you go to the dialer app and choose settings. From there I think you select personalize eq. You need to have a set of headphones ready before proceeding.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought he was saying earpiece like just holding the phone to his head, not a blue tooth or headphone set with mic...

Root ad install beats audio from the market
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

I tried installing beats audio from the market, did everything it said and when rebooting the phone froze and i had to flash back to stock and reroot. Not touching that app with a 10ft pole. Nova launcher makes things easier for things like multitasking with gestures. Love that ability to do so.

You are absolutely correct!!!

I upgraded from the One S and couldnt be happier.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2

I own both and the GS3 is by far a better device hands down, there really isn't any comparison between them with consideration to the quality. I have a Beats Headset and I don't notice a difference between the two but that's because the headset is so clean it's hard to see the difference anyways.
I like the fact the back button is on the right instead of the left like it is on the One S and I'm more than sure if you wanted to get that multitask button working with a little work anything is possible, I'm actually surprised you were able to look at the two and not be glad you have the GS3 that alone is amazing itself there is no true multitasking on the One S and clearly the GS3 is a huge upgrade from the One S.
I guess I'm just wondering why you even bothered getting it if that's the worst you could find wrong with it.

Beats integration is just an overglorified equalizer.
Use a good music player like Power Amp and you can get pretty much the same effect if not better.

Have 3 things to say:
1) Thanks to all for the advice. I did find the EQ from music and the ear piece. So thanks for those tips. I enjoy music much more again.
2) HTC One S and Galaxy S3 have the same chip and I think HTC One S is even more responsive when returning to home screen. I've had HTC for over 3 years. I guess i have a learning curve to catch up with Touchwiz. Only reason I upgraded is bigger screen and separate SD card. Apart from that not much difference between both phones.
3) Sharing a possible solution for multitasking button. I know "button Savior" app adds an icon to the side of the screen making all the menu, home, back, etc.. accessible with your thumb. Only thing is I need to root to get full functionality. Icon and soft buttons can be customized .
If some can try #3 and let me know if you can get multitasking working that would be great.
Thanks in advance again to everyone.

Rooting is the way to go though!
In all honesty, simply rooting your device and keeping it on the stock rom is probably the easiest thing you can do.
That way you can install things like: AwesomeBEATS and something to change what each of the hardware buttons do.
Being on CM10 I can change what each hardware button does (long press Home=Google Now ; Long press menu = Tasker)

The "lag" when going back to the home screen when pressing home is do to the fact that s voice is set up with a double tap option for the home button. Turning this option off increases response time. Go to s voice, menu button, settings and uncheck the launch s voice.

Sound wise, both kind of suck. Beats Audio is just an EQ set with an emphasis on bass, there's nothing special about it.. The sound chip on the American S3 is also somewhat subpar considering the International version has a Wolfson..

you should make another post for your s3 for the first 48 hours see if that makes any difference

saldebot you are the man thanks for the direct links for rooting. The true reason I did not want to root is because I was a recovered flashaholic from my HTC Evo 4G days, but now I guess I'm back on the wagon or off the wagon. Well I hope I don't spend to many late night like this one since I have to get up at 6:30 am. LOL really not funny..
And now I have multitask button working and all other menu button near my thumb with button savior. No more reaching all the way down or having to press and hold the home button. Sweet, its this rush that feels good
ok good night to all flashaholics,

No problem glad I could help. Welcome back to the darkside

2. You'll get use to it.

Increase Base Volume Levels?

Stupid question...
Is there any way to increase the base volume level on the Incredible? Listening to podcasts via the speaker phone is sometimes challenging in certain environments. I would like to be able to increase the levels if possible.
Anyone know if this is possible?
I also would like to increase the volume on this , Bluetooth and inbound calls.

Same, but for all audio out.
There was an app called LVH (Louder Volume Hack) in the market that I purchased when I had my Eris that worked PERFECTLY for this on CM5/CM6/Stock Sense. But the app doesn't appear to work on my Incredible. Which sucks Because I LOVED being able to crank the headset/bluetooth volume.. I would love to see something like this working on the inc..
!EDIT! Apparently I just didn't try enough times because I got the app working on the official OTA 2.2! The app appears to work but I do not think the volume is actualy being increased.. gonna try the 4.0 Beta.
Devs Page: http://androidaudiohacks.com/home/
LVH Apparently Doesn't work for DINC!
Hi Guys,
Purchased the LVH from Meltus, thinking that with root, I'd have no problem using it, but while it did run, and say it had successfully pushed the proper values, it didn't seem to increase the volume. I wrote the dev, & he told me it doesn't work with the Droid Incredible :-(
His site: http://androidaudiohacks.com, does have disclaimers and info indicating the app is for earlier phones like the G1, and Saphire, and doesn't work on Droid, or branded android phones, but not clear enough for idiots like me! He also said in his reply that Google had locked access to the volume files on later phones, and so increasing the volume requires modifying the kernel.
Incredibles are known for blowing out their own speakers. I recommend avoiding this.my speaker is a little blown just with normal use. I now play audio 2 clicks from max volume.

I've been looking for the same thing. Took a trip a week ago and could not hear a movie with my earphones on the plane ride. I just found a new post last night in the "themes and apps" sub forum titled Audio/Equalizer. It has a this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=783737 to a DSP equalizer you can install. You must be rooted. Works well for me with a modest gain in volume and improved sound quality. You can simply put the zip in the root directory of your sd card and use clockwork mod to install the zip. (you may have to toggle signature verification off first). Just make sure to do a Nandroid backup first in case you encounter a problem.
Thanks guys! You both ROCK!

I didn't know about the speaker issue. My interest has been more focused on use with headphones, and in-call, which is a different speaker than the one I believe you are referring to.
I noticed the sound from the Incredible rear speaker was quite a bit higher fidelity than on other HTC phones I've owned, which may account for its being a bit more fragile, but that's just speculation. I'll be a lot more careful with it.

Ok so im home and good to go for any questions you guys have on the phone
audio quality? compare to your recent mp3 player/phone?
---------- Post added at 05:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:54 AM ----------
forgot to say, in earphone only.
Can you tell me, does Samsung Galaxy Nexus have usb-host? Google says that you can connect keyboards, mouses etc. But not any word about usb flash drives. Does SGN can recognise any flash drives like it can do Galaxy S2?
Thank you in advance.
@tvp I would say the audio is on par with the Galaxy S II for speaker use, Still the single speaker, but I found using headphones the nexus was slightly better than my S II. Plus i use my phone for music through my cars built in 3.5mm jack and ics has an equalizer in the music player meaning you can really get the best out of your music depending on what your using eg headphones, speaker, car etc just by tweaking the EQ
thanks for quick reply, another question.
This is a deal-breaker for me, does the phone support flash?
Can you tell me if the phone dialer works by spelling out a name on the phone dialer screen from your contacts to look up the number?
I have an HTC TB, and the HTC dialer is great.
I hope this phone does this, or i will have to find an app I suppose.
Ok Usb host: I have not been able to try this however it was a feature in android v3 so i dont see it being removed in ICS when i get the chance il try it.
Flash: I have as of yet not been able to get it to work. I have installed flash 11 with no joy I am awaiting confirmation on whats happening with this
And no name dialling it simply displays the number however on ever page of ICS you have a search bar and you just type the name into that and it brings up the contact where you can call straight from there
no flash ??? That's gone be an issue seeing as they are NOT updating flash to support new versions
I know it appears to be an issue since adobe gave up on flash. Im waiting to hear from Samsung regarding this to see if they have any solution as its kind of a major omission esp until everyone starts to use html5
Any other Q ?

I think an alternative (3rd party app) for the HTC dialer would be something like RocketDialer
And Kenneth, first of all I wanted to thank you for the amazing video you posted (also thanked you on the video itself Second, I wanted to ask if you could download the most memory/processor intensive apps that you know of and see if there is any sluggish performance or noticeable lag? (A video would be extremely appreciated) Third, I wanted to know with the multitasking, does it save the last previous state? E.g. for the iphone (as far as I know), when you load a webpage in the browser, exit out of it open some other apps, and then go back into the browser the exact state is saved so it doesn't reload the page when you re-enter the webpage. Finally, I would appreciate it if you could download some free games (e.g. wind up knight, tap tap revenge 4) that require a huge amount of graphics and attempt to play it on the phone. The phone is known to have a really, REALLY, outdated GPU and I wanted to know how it performs.
Sorry if this is too much to ask, and your help is very appreciated
Hey Ken,
Would you be able to find out if OTG usb works? Particularly whether or not the Galaxy Nexus can browse the contents of a usb thumb drive? I have been asking all over the forum and over the internet and as yet still cannot find information, documentation or videos that this is possible.
Thank you very much.

Great vid! Any graphic studdering during games or anything? I don't play many games but alil worried about the lesser gpu.
id ask a question but at this point I'm just waiting until Monday when we're supposed to be getting this phone. I want to see what its like in person & decide then if I want to keep this Rezound or switch up.
I just hope the 32GB model is $299(or possibly on some sale). ill be damned if ill pay that price just for 16GB.

Music player suggestions?

The stock music player works fine for me. The thing is, and maybe it has some sort of option and I just don't know about it, but when I go out for my walks, I hate having to reach down and taking the phone out of the case from my waist to skip to the next song or replay the last song.
So I was wondering if there were any options that would allow me to maybe use the volume up down buttons or the buttons on the built in mic/volume control on the Samsung headset that came with the phone to do this?
Thank you,
Whiteice
First off, are you rooted?
If yes, then you can try FreeGS3 ROM[/UR], it's close to stock with many tweaks including the vol up/down mod to change songs. Was looking for a flashable zip in the dev section but couldn't find one.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will look into it. If you happen to come across a flashable zip for the stock rom on root, please do let me know.
With all the flashing of different roms on my Nexus 7 recently, I am burnt out right now flashing roms. I just got this phone and getting used to it, so im not looking into roms, not just yet, but eventually sure. Plus, being on Sprint, word is the JB update is coming out soon so I don't want to flash a rom then JB comes out.
Regardless, thank you,

Speaker volume is very low in Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean

Hello Guys,
Can you guys please go to the following link and star that problem, to see if Google can do something about correcting this issue.
this low volume is the biggest complaint about staying stock.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=35084
Why not just use Franco kernel and use volume boost... I just hate filing complaints.
-tapped from my paradigm Franco kernel Galaxy nexus
I have the same problem with a nexus galaxy with jellybean 4.1.1
I found a soluction in web that talk of change a string in system\build.prop
"ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps=" and change its value to 10.
But my problem is that in my build.prop the string there isn't.
How i can solve the low volume on my nexus?
Volume+ (volume boost) don't work, it crash at start
Bump!
If any of you guys have time, please Star that topic.
I know it can easily be fixed via rooting the device or what not.
But i'm kind of over the whole rooting scene in a way and just want to stay stock.
but it bugs me that if my nexus is in my pocket or if im not in a quiet room i can barely hear anything.
i also emailed the google play support team, hopefully they will reply.
i've owned way too many google devices for them to just ignore us like that.
best believe if this issue is not resolved via software update, sad to say but i will be switching over to ios.
reply back from Google Play.
I guess they cant do anything about it.. This sucks.
Hi JC,
Thanks for your response back. I can understand how annoying it can be to
experience low volume on your phone device and having to wait for the
development team to come out with an OTA to fix the issue. Unfortunately,
this information isn't available to us since it's being handled by the
Android development team. I recommend you report the issue directly to the
development team. Here's how you can report platform bugs:
http://developer.android.com/support.html
There is also a chance that the issue might be something Samsung might be
able to either repair or perform a replacement for; depending on how long
you've had your device. If you'd like, you're welcome to give us a call
and we can see if this will help. I'm providing a link to our click to
call below:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.omegacentauri.SpeakerBoost&hl=en
I can understand the stock mentality but with a couple adjustments you will get a better than stock - stock experience...
Personally If I wanted to stock-ish, I would flash the stock rom, root, install trinitystable35 kernel, install trickster mod, adjust headphone volume only and then set superuser to deny any root attempt by default without a prompt...

If you wanted to add that to your build.prop, you could download Build Prop Editor from the Playstore, create a key named ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps, and give it the value 10. At your own risk, of course.
Do they even test this stuff? It's beyond unacceptable to have a speaker this inaudible. Makes me want to throw my phone every time I try to watch a video.

I did not find the solution, Volume+ boost app still do not work with JB (hopefully will work soon) and Speaker Boost still "stop working", even the old versions.
So, do you know any other solution?
JB 4.1.1 Low volume issue resolved - at lease for me
i had the same issue when i upgraded my stock S3 to 4.1 -- the speaker volume was very low in Nav and music players.
Increasing the "Media" volume fixed it for me.
click on the volume button (up or down) and then click on the settings icon at the end of the slider. Now slide the "Media" volume to the highest.
Everything is back to normal -- in nav audio and speaker phone etc.
If you have not already tried this, you can give it a try ... it might fix it!

Viper4Android for Lollipop

First off I'd like to say thanks for this great forum. I've used it many times over the years but just recently registered. I've never really had anything substantial to add (still don't). In the past I've had a Photon and HTC One M7, both from Sprint. I never really had the urge to mess with them at all. I recently bought a Note 4 and I decided to root it. I'm more of a computer person, building and customizing but never got into messing with phones.
With that said I'm in need of some help so I decided to register. Not sure if I have much to add at this point to become a contributing member so if anybody is hesitant to help I completely understand. I've been a noob on many other forums, and have also seen noobs come and go. So if anybody can help, that's great and I thank you ahead of time. If not, that's OK too.
I was completely torn between the new LG, an HTC One M9 and the Note 4........ I even considered the Nexus. The audio quality of the M7 that I had was and still is better than any other non-HTC phone on the market and it was really tough to convince myself to get something different. I wanted a big screen with great hardware. The Note 4 had all that except for the audio. The audio, speakers and headphone quality absolutely suck. I am terribly disappointed. I was going to see if HTC was going to release a version with a bigger display, I saw that it is a toned down version. If HTC made a 5.5-5.7" maxed out version like the smaller M9 I would have gotten it.
Now, I've rooted this phone and I've gone through all the steps of installing V4A and no matter what I do it does not function at all. The problem I see is that my phone upgraded to Lollipop. In order to properly install V4A the SELinux mode needs to be set to permissive. There was an app (I forget the name of it offhand) that could change the mode, unfortunately it is not compatible with Lollipop. Without changing the mode to permissive I cannot properly install V4A.
I've searched through this forum a couple times over and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Is there another way to change this mode? What about recommendations for one of the custom ROM's that has V4A in it? I'm really open to any suggestions. I'm really fed up with this phone telling me what volume level is enough. I use this phone for music all the time and the stock equalizer automatically cuts the volume down to the highest equalizer setting. I can hear the difference, when using Spotify if I skip to the next song the stock equalizer (SoundAlive) takes a split second to kick in and you can hear how it should sound without SoundAlive. For all this Note 4 has, I'm really starting to regret getting this over the M9. It would be a great phone if I can get some volume back as well as some decent sound quality.

You need custom kernel to set mode from enforced to permissive... or google there is away to enable V4A to work with stock kernel that involve romtool.
This phone imo is top notch in all areas but I agree with you on the audio quality, stock music player that is. I use PowerAmp and all of that changes, even through the phones tiny speaker. My suggestion is to revert to stock and simply install the app if you're just looking to improve audio quality. Just my 2 cents.

I've heard many good things about PowerAmp but as far as I know that's only applicable to downloaded songs. It doesn't work with Spotify.

Yeah that's true. Sorry
I'd suggest using the Emotion r14 kernel. That will get you permissive and a much snappier phone as well as having tweaks specific to sound. It supports Faux 123 sound on top of everything else. You should find a link to the kernel in the original android development area.

Sorry the Emotion kernel can be found here.

Thank you for the recommendation. I'll check it out. If I can get the permissive setting I shouldn't have any issues getting V4A installed. Everything else that comes with that kernel is an added bonus.
OK, that kernel worked great! I was able to install V4A almost flawlessly. No disrespect to any of the equalizer apps out there but V4A is by far the best audio control I've used. I've been banging my head against the wall trying to get this installed. That kernel did make the phone a little "snappier" as you put it. I haven't had a chance to mess with Synapse, I might just leave well enough alone as it's now working he way I want. Thanks again.
im just curious do you still have data after flashing that kernal?
Do I still have data? Not sure what you mean.
Hello to all.
Can someone help me with the tunein radio not working with viper audio?
I changed my phone to permissive, and added the 2 zips somebody uploaded that changed the build prop. But i still cannot get viper and tunein to work together. Maven Pro audio works great as does iheart with viper.
Thank you in advance.
Blessings
I'm not a subscriber of Tunein, I wish I could help ya. Does V4A work with other audio services?

According to this it's an issue with Tunein. It is a little old so not sure if there is a different issue since then, so take it for what it's worth.
