[Q] HTC One X or LG Optimus G - LG Optimus G (International)

I recently got the HTC One X for AT&T, then after further looking I learned about the LG Optimus G and was instantly attracted towards it! Now I know nobody can help me make a decision on which phone to keep, but I was trying to get some opinions on everyday use with the Optimus G, like battery life, camera quality, video playback ect...
Anyone who currently has an Optimus G please leave your feedback on the phone! My biggest concern is battery life, I can make it through a day on the One X with about 15% battery to spare. A comparison between the two phones batteries, in everyday use would be great. If I can make it through a whole day on the HTC One X, could I also make it through a whole day on the Optimus G?
Also I would like to add that the boot loader being locked on the Optimus is not a big deal to me.
Oh and one more thing, I am new to the XDA community so greetings everyone!

As per the forum rules, please post all questions or requests in the Q & A section. Thanks! Thread moved.

I've been looking into the Optimus G. It gets great reviews and the S4 pro is the very best, not to mention it's the only chipset supports quad core and LTE in the U.S. That last part is enough to sell me.

Although it would have been better if Qualcomm managed to integrate the LTE modem, just like they did with the MSM8960.

I was in a similar position as you. I bought a Galaxy S3 a month ago, and saw the LG Optimus G was announced by AT&T ( and i had to return it that very day). I returned it and now waiting for either the LG Optimus G, the HTC One X+, or the new nexus device. What did you decide to do if you don't mind my asking?

Power consumption is lower ==> Improved battery life
One chip instead of two ==> Smaller size ==> leaves more room for other things

There is an S4 Pro variant with an integrated modem. Not sure why the first gen devices don't have it; I guess Qualcomm wasn't ready yet. In regards to the Optimus G vs the Nexus 4, you'll have to wait til October 29th to see exactly how it compares to the Nexus 4. From what I can see, its essentially a Galaxy Nexus on the front and somewhat similar to the Optimus G's back but with the Optimus G's internals and AOSP. So obviously, the software will be more up-to-date, but you may like Optimus UI better than AOSP's UI or you may like the aesthetics of the Optimus better. The software and appearance seem to be the main differences on those two, so you'll have to decide what you feel is more important.
As far as the Optimus vs the One X+, the hardware on the Optimus is hands down better as far as the processor (the S4 pro is the best chip on the market and the One X+'s Tegra 3 chip is about on par with the dual core s4 found in the American One X (or European One XL) and One S, but HTC's UI and design are arguably better and they'll probably be better at updating your software than LG. If you love Sense, you should get the One.

If you are comparing HTC One X vs Optimus G it is no contest, get the Optimus G. The Optimus G is a better phone (from what reviews and tech info I have read) then the One X. If you were comparing an S3 I would say it is a little more difficult. Here's why
HTC One X and Optimus G (LG) Locked bootloader. S3 is unlocked you can have custom roms installed.
HTC One X no Micro SD Slot. LG and S3 Do.
HTC One X and LG have sealed batteries. S3 is replaceable.
LG quad core phone. S3 AND HTC are dual only
LG and S3 2gb of ram. HTC just 1.
HTC best screen! LG and S3 are behind
So the only thing HTC has is the best screen and Sense if you want to count that. Other than that there are better phones and the LG is one of them.

Isn't it a bit early to judge the ROM status of the LG Optimus G? it can still get an unlocked bootloader officially or unofficially.

I never suggested taking a chance.
I just wish people would quit acting like the phone is DOA.
LG or XDA could intervene and the phone will be here Friday so it's not like most people can't wait a week or two at this point.
As someone who is still on the Captivate, I really enjoy the perks of having a device with identical hardware to nexus where many of the perks can easily be ported. I really would like to at least see what happens. No point in telling people to straight up give up hope before the thing even launches.

Yeah I agree. Plus how can I argue with a Captivate owner I sold mine in April and since then I have had 5 android phones. I do miss the Dev on the Cappy, it was FANTASTIC!
If anyone finds a way to bypass the bootloader then this most likely will be my next phone. Heck I am contemplating the Nexus 4 now but 16gb is just killing me. If the Att Optimus G could use Nexus roms and have LTE and SD card I am sold.
Let's cross our fingers

I've got the optimus g from a skyrocket... being able to run roms is definitely a + we'll have to see if the lg can run roms... I had the xperia ion w/ a locked bootloader and the rom community is waaay smaller than on Samsung devices and others with unlocked bootloaders... but the optimus definitely has the best screen on any smartphone in 2012 the ips display is perfectly visible even in direct sunlight

I'm really amazed at how well my Captivate is holding up through dev support.
It's part of the reason I am really, really, really, hoping either someone around here or LG unlocks the bootloader.
Having that solid dev support in addition to fantastic hardware would make it the obvious choice.

Locked boot loader or not the Optimus G is a fantastic device. You literally have to hold one in your hands to realize how solid the device is.

I had a LG 2X and sold it for HTC One X . The only real downside on the 2X was the battery life and I have that "issue" now on my One X ; which I believe will be my last Tegra device.
The only thing Tegra 3 succeeds is the standby life , it hardly loses any % overnight , for example. On GSM Arena blog , the LG OG is rated 5h on web test ; whereas HOX is rated 4h. Both on ICS . Samsung GS3 is 5h on ICS and 6h on JB.
So the LG OG should be compared with the HOX+ and it's larger battery ; benchmark performance are better for LG and practical performance are already good on HTC device ; so it's a matter of personal preference I guess.
Maybe you would want the latest technology and screw nvidia...
The smart move would be to wait if the LG OG gets the JB update as promised on december because the next iteration of device are coming on February ( Cortex-a15 ; full HD ) and probably on Android 4,2 ; that would mean - if LG OG stays ICS - it would be two updates ( 1 year ) late...huge
It should be noted the Nexus 4 is said to be "the fastest and smoothest device" but in benchmark performance it is really slow ( see anandtech and the verge) . Real life impression are better judgement i guess. Personally I dislike android (cyanogen like ) plain design.
Engadget : "Since the Nexus 4 uses the same 2,100mAh battery (and power-friendly Krait chip) as the Optimus G, we expected to record essentially the same runtime. Much to our surprise, however, it was considerably worse in both our tests and our real-life use."

Note 2 or Optimus G? Definitely Note 2

Hi, I have the Optimus G for 2 days, and its a verrrrryyyyy fast device. What are the Quadrant scores you guys get with Note 2. I still have 12 days that I can exchange.
I'm not trying to convince anyone to get a Optimus G. Just want to know opinions from you guy's.
Edit: After using the Optimus G for 5 days its going back. I decided to get the Note 2 can't use anything that is not Super AMOLED. Thanx to all of you for your replies.

Didnt screenshot it but 6200 ish is what I was hitting. I remember my low scores was graphics probably due to the huge screen lol.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Quadrant doesnt really matter. Our phones can handle anything you throw at them..
Questions you should ask yourself when trying to decide is:
Do you like the big screen of the Note II or prefer the LG Optimus G's screen?
Do you like the LG overlay or prefer touchwiz?
Will you be rooting and installing kernals? (Because if you are, im pretty sure the boot loader is locked down on the Optimus G so you wont be able to install kernals)
Do you like the build quality of Samsung or LG?
Do you need the removable battery?
^^^^ Answer these questions and you will most likely know your answer.
Hopefully I helped.
Battery life alone is worth it. I'm at 59% with 2 and a half hours screen on, LTE usage, 15 min voice calls, and 15 min navigation use. Google Now is running and I have sync running constantly. Been off the charger for 10.5 hours. Best battery life ever.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
Well, here is my battery life on first full charge. Wifi was always on but only connected for about 6 hours (been gone all day). So LTE drain doesn't appear to be an issue as of yet. Lots of texts. 45 minutes streaming netflix movie over LTE While wife was shopping. Took about 300 pics and 15 minutes of video while at zoo. Lotbof internet and son playing Nova 3 for 35 minutes while driving to zoo. I am simply amazed!
Whatever your choice, don't think you will be disappointed if you do switch.

I still fail to see why do people care about Quadrant so much. It's like, if a company made a phone which did absolutely nothing but get 15k Quadrant scores people would buy it just for it. The GN2 (and I'm sure the Optimus G too) runs buttery smooth with minimal to none lag. It can run everything you throw at it as good as the Optimus G can.
What you should really ask yourself is if you'd rather have a 5.5 size screen vs a 4.7 sized screen. Not everyone likes the 5.5 screen on the GN2.

I was in the same boat and decided on the note 2.
Mostly because it will have developer support and LG doesn't release software updates often (so I've heard).
IMO they are both great phones, I just like Samsung a bit better.
From everything I have heard...LG doesn't put out updates as often...and doesn't have as much support from developers as the Galaxy line does...No SD card support or S-pen with the LG...but has a better screen...but no practical option for multi-veiw..
For my choice...the advantages of what I am going to do with it...the larger screen...the s-pen...the extra storage...makes the Note II the winner..
Mac
I have both phones. The Optimus G is on temporary loan but I've had it for a week or so. It's got a nice heft and I love the rounded edge, but it's an LG. I have worked with their other smartphones in the past and there are always strange little quirks and issues. Not to mention they're horrible track record for releasing updates. This Optimus G has already had problems with the camera not initializing and having to reboot to get it to work. Honestly you wouldn't go wrong with either phone. But I do like the note 2 more. It has a great display, awesome specs, it's just a good all around phone and I suspect there will be a very healthy active developer community. Samsung has already shown that they are able to release updates faster than they have in the past. Maybe it is because cyabogen works for them now. If you really wanted, I could post side by side pictures and benchmarks and stuff like that. What I also like about the Samsung is that it has some added compatibility with other Samsung phones, including the very popular Galaxy S3.

+1. But I still went for the Note II. I handled both at the AT&T store yesterday and am glad I picked up Note II.
I bet the the Note II will have more user development support like roms, kernels, etc than the Optimus G
If the OP is worried with benchmarks, check the sun spider benchmark - the note 2 destroyed the Optimus G (note 2 scores between 1025 and 950 - lower=better) and beats the Optimus G in antutu and several others (look for Engadget review of Nexus 4- shows all major benchmarks between Nexus 4,Optimus G, and Note 2 - Note 2 wins 4 out of 6).
Note 2 has spen (KILLER feature when you use it, so dang useful), excellent battery life, bigger screen (Web page viewing is a pleasure), expandable storage (except for ATT version) , smart stay/rotation features... Such a huge list. Note 2 all the way.
I'm scoring between 6300 and 6500 in quadrant, but I don't give any credence to this score- I find sun spider and antutu more telling of a device's day-to-day performance.

It sounds more like you've already made your decison, since you are asking about if you should Get a certain phone on a forum with an obvious bias (nearly everyone on this GN2 forum has bought it already, so you will pretty much just hear people say get the GN2, because they made that decision, and will probably extend their opinion to you, to justify their own purchase.
TLDR: Don't expect an objective opinion )
That being said. If you like the bigger screen, you will absolutely not be disappointed with the Note 2. I'm sure the Optimus G is pretty good (haven't ever touched one though!) as well, but I can say for sure the Note 2 is one hell of a phone.:victory:

That's not always true. I have an Optimus G, SGS3,Gnote 2, HTC OneX, and many others. The fact that I have all these phones but choose the Gnote 2 as my daily device speaks highly of this phone. LG 4X HD vs. Galaxy Nexus

Hi everyone, I'd like to see what do you think.. I won a LG 4X HD this christmas and at first I got very happy but after.. I saw that it has a locked bootloader and there aren´t custom roms for it. I got an proposal for it, an white Gnex + $150 but I don´t know it it worths, because the processor, camera and screen seems to be be better on the 4x.. but the a nexus is a nexus.. . So, what is your opinion? (Here in Brazil, a Galaxy Nexus costs like $790 and a 4X HD $900)

I agree that the LG 4X HD is a beast in specs compared to the Galaxy Nexus. It has a Tegra 3 processor which is clocked at 1.5GHz which is a quad core (however it might not matter at all since the Galaxy Nexus is awesome with Jelly Bean), a much larger battery and even a microSD card slot if you put a lot of media onto your device.
Is the LG 4X HD you won in new condition? Also is the white Galaxy Nexus in good condition?
Also have you previously owned a Nexus device before?
I would personally go with the Galaxy Nexus (if its in good condition) and cash because I am a flash addict and if you are too.. then you know what to do.
I have gnex and its awesome I am due an upgrade but would rather keep the gnex
There is so many ROMs/kernels for the gnex and very soon Ubuntu phone will be available. I don't know anything about the lg 4x but with a locked boot loader and no custom ROMs etc I personally would take the gnex.
This is only my opinion so I would wait for others to comment who may know more about the 4x.
Hope this little input can help you make up your mind

My 4X HD is new and the Gnex too, i've never owned a Nexus device before but I have custom roms at all my androids, CM10 my Defy, CM10.1 on Transformer Prime, CM10 on XOOM (almost a Nexus) and CM9 on my Galaxy Ace.
I'd stick with the Nexus too. Even versus better hardware, you can't beat the development. Software > Hardware IMO...
I'd probably buy another GNex if anything happened to this one.

100% get the Galaxy Nexus and cash or if you can, sell the 4X HD for a lot more since you do seem to have a lot of "up to date" devices due to the custom roms
Since the device is new, you'll love it and you won't notice the performance difference if you used the 4X HD compared to the Galaxy Nexus.
And of course, you are in the Nexus forums so it'll be biased

Nearly all positive. Looks like LG is on the road to respectability. Now if only someone can find a way to get the Pro's camera firmware, among other features, to our OG...

Yeah, I won't be ditching my OG for it, but it's nice to see LG have three top tier phones in a row (counting the N4), and a proper competitor for the Note II. I just hope some of the improved software, in particular the camera firmware, makes it to our OGs one way or another.

Too big. I ditched my note 2 for the same reason.

I wonder if Samsung will sue lg for making a galaxy s3 double
I'd rather choose HTC One with very similar spec but same size as our LGOG

Galaxy Note 2 double* (sorry, I know it was probably just a typo)
If you compare the two devices, they look almost 100% identical.
Comparison shot:
Link because it's a big image
When my HTC One X(L) broke, I originally went with the Note 2. However the size and quality of the screen (it looked yellow) convinced me to turn it in for the smaller Optimus G (and also cheaper!). I don't think I could go bigger than the size of Optimus G comfortably.
Maybe I missed something. What was with the antenna at the very end of the video? I didn't see or read anything about that

That's the T-DMB antenna. Over there they watch TV on their phones.

The Korean OG also had an antenna.
Ours wouldn't have one.
Yeah, it was used to watch TV, as stated above.

Agreed, I'm at the limit of what I can do one-handed with this phone. It's actually still a hair too big for my mitts. It isn't comfortable for big stretches and I'm in danger of dropping it when making far corner reaches with one hand. I could never really use anything any bigger, practically, and in a crowd without fear of dropping it sure to the slightest bump.

I'm very interested in seeing a side by side comparison between OG & OGP's screens.
yea... and the pro won't get an N4 conversion either... glad i got the LGOG
Looks like a S3 with an lg logo. Lawsuit!

Wow! Umm, yeah, if I didn't see the LG logo, I would say it's an S3 or Note 2.
God I hate that physical button...

Wow...that's one big ass phone.
But interesting benchmark.
AnTuTu 3.1 19,300
Our LGOG benchmarked around 21k, so it's faster than the G Pro?
lg og seems to be benching around 21k on snows jb, 19k would be slower however from what I've seen the og pro has been doing about 25k

Does anyone have any regrets?

I have the htc one and the lg optimus g pro. I don't really like Samsung devices, my wife has the note 2 but from what I've been hearing the n3 is badass. Does anyone regret ever getting it?

Simple Answer: No
I was kinda of a HTC snob. Now I have been converted. The Note 3 is a beast of a phone.
You can add SDcard and has removal battery. HTC dropped that on the One. That is one of the issues that made me change to Samsung.

No, and the note 2 is still the second best phone ever made, abs also a beast.

Absolutely not. The only thing I'm "getting used to" is the size, but that's one of the reasons I bought it. After I got stuck with the One S for almost two years, one of my many complaints with that POS was thinking it was too small after initially thinking the size was prefect.
But the main reasons I switched to the Note 3, after giving up on Samsung after the GS2 was a complete letdown, was the hardware. No other phone offers all of this, sure you can get most of it here, some of it there, but this is the only phone right now with it ALL. 3GB of RAM, 1080p, 2.3GHz Quad core Snapdragon 800, 32GB internal memory WITH SD slot, 3200mAh battery, S-Pen etc. And the improvements to the S-Pen's usefulness are significant, so if your wife's Note 2 didn't impress you, don't let that deter you from the Note 3.
Please keep all comparison, other device, upgrades, off topic conversation to the proper thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46091506

[Q] Is the E980 a good buy?

I'm looking for an upgrade from Optimus 2X P990. I've a shortlisted a few phone that are in my budget, they are the N4, Optimus G, Optimus G Pro, and the Xperia SP.
There are a few questions I have.
Firstly, I'll buy an E980 AT&T version if I am to get an Optimus G Pro, but will it work with the Indian Service providers flawlessly?
Secondly, why isn't there as many ROMs as there has to be for a terrific phone as this? Is it because of the Locked Bootloader?
Thirdly, does the FreeGee support mean that a Pandora's box of ROMs and Kernels have been opened?
Thank you all.
Regards,
Ron

It all depends what you're looking for. True, the OGP lacks dev support, but the few ROMs we work nicely and the hardware is fantastic.
I wouldn't bother with an N4. The AT&T LG Optimus G (LG-E970) has almost the same exact hardware as the N4 but a bigger and better screen with cap keys and an external SD slot. But, since everything else is 97% the same as the N4, the OG gets updated custom ROMs just as fast as the N4 since the sources for the N4 can be use for the e970 with very minor changes.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I did consider the AT&T E970 for the reasons you mentioned. But then again, the hardware and design of the E980 is too tempting to let go. Wondering if the development for the phone will grow in future. If so, this will be my next phone, hopefully. Also, since it has official CM support too, doesn't that secure the development of ROMs for at least 2-3 years? :/

Not necessarily. With 4.4 now out, the CM team would still need to add the device. However, personally, I do think this will get the 4.4 update one way or the other and I won't be jumping to a new phone anytime soon.

I just traded my galaxy s4 for this phone and couldn't be happier. installed cwm and flashed carbonrom.. loving it! :good:
This phone is a great phone and the developers that we do have are great. We will continue to get updates because the hardware is too good to just leave on jellybean. This is my opinion of course, so I am clearly happy with the e-980 and don't plan on getting another phone anytime soon.

I was looking for an upgrade from my aging galaxy note and this thing is absolutely wonderful. Top tier specs and much cheaper to pick up unlocked then top range samsung stuff. The only downside I've found has been that the custom rom support isn't as good as most Samsungs I've owned so just check out what is available for the optimus G pro and see if it's enough for you.

this phone is capable of way more than the samsung galaxy s4 that has the mf3 update. mine did so I traded for this phone :good:
I'm seriously thinking of getting the OGPro now. But it's only the lack of development that worries me a little, hope it gets better with time.
Thank you all for your valuable suggestions.
PS: Probably gonna place an order in an hour or two.
