Has Samsung released a fixed ics? - Samsung Captivate Glide

Has Samsung just forgotten about us an not bothering to release a fixed ics? My girlfriends captivate glide has a number of issues, but she doesn't want me to wipe it and restore it to gingerbread. Does anyone know if Samsung will be fixing it?

If Samsung had released a revised ics, I expect the forums would be screaming it out loud far and near. I don't expect you would be able to miss such news. Since I've seen no such news ...

Sometimes I ask myself why the devs here, who eagerly reverse engineer every part of the software, like dman or thegreatergood for example, are able to do and fix what Samsung can't.

Short answer - money.
Slightly longer answer:
- dman does what he does to please himself. If others can make use of it, great. If not, oh well.
- he doesn't have to strike some bizarre balance of pleasing stakeholders (such as google, please let us use your apps and please don't keep suing us), app developers, hardware suppliers, others trying to leech off the Samsung ecosystem, getting product into carrier's hands (in a manner they're willing to pay for) ...
- why fix when you can sell them another device instead? define: gullible. Reference: Caveat emptor.
- it'll cost more to fix than they'll ever make back
- dman doesn't have to turn a profit to keep shareholders happy
- greed
- more greed ...
- because they don't have to.
- because dman wants to.
- I expect dman derives a certain 'screw you and your bloatware I'm going to maximize the potential in the hardware available' attitude and satisfaction out of doing so.
- and, apparently, he has a whole whack of people surrounding him to help, and there's a certain warm fuzziness in doing good stuff with good people.
We love you (d)man!

^ LOL, well said.

I was about to flash a custom rom because I was so sick of the com.android.phone crash after every call. But thanks to xda member lambgx02, it's now fixed without a factory reset and without having to lose any data.
Here's the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1945620
Note: you have to root your phone to do it. Here's how to root the ics update http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833579 (thanks ItsMeBdon!)
Keyboard backlight fix is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30591517&postcount=1 (thanks Nardholio!)
Those were the major problems for me but there are still other bugs. Exchange email doesn't seem to work as well as it did with gingerbread. Also, my data usage in settings seems to reset itself every week instead of once a month like I set it to.

[ROM]DL17/Deodexed/Rooted/Busybox/Debinged/Debloated

Hey folks,
This is a very basic DL17 rom. It has been debloated, debinged, rooted, deodexed, and zipaligned. Does NOT include radio or kernel.

This should serve as a decent base for folks to build their future roms.

Flashed this, This morning and it works awesome. I also flashed the test kernal you provided a week or so ago and its working great together.
Thanks for this.
Well just noticed some sort of bug on my phone at least.
When i try to add a facebook account to my ticker it fails and when i click on adding an email to my ticker it locks up my phone and i have to pull my battery. It doesnt even get me to a enter email and password screen.
Honestly to me its not a big deal im not a big facebook or email guy so it doesnt bother me.
Also i was wondering if you knew if any of the themes for the fasinate will work for this? I doubt it just wondering.
Fascinate themes must be ported. I'll look into the facebook and email issue fi possible.
Patch added for email.

the theme porters that are out there...well they most just copy images with the same (or very similar) file names over one another...the post i linked above is my horribly incomplete but still useful attempt at helping people get into themes for the fascinate.
all the tools neccessary are linked in the posts there.
since the fascinate dj05/dl09 update appears very similar to dl17 porting our themes shouldnt be difficult image wise...however there are several xml changes that must be made (especially for black menus)
if anyone is really interested in starting to theme for the continuum look through the above thread and feel free to pm me here with questions or hop into the fascinate irc...im usually in there during the week throughout the day...or others im sure can help too
i had briefly thought about throwing a theme together for the continuum for fun right before dl30 (froyo) leaked...but now i have too much on my plate reporting stuff
While posting an Android ROM, can you guys PLEASE mention what Android version it is? Is this Eclair or Froyo? 2.1, 2.2, 2.2.1...which version? DL17 might explain everything to a developer but not to a user who just wants to flash a ROM on his system and needs to know what Android version it is before actually flashing it.
With all due respect, if you aren't familiar with the naming convention, i.e. don't know what DL17 means, you have no business flashing a rom (until you do). You are gonna end up breaking your device.
2.1Update-1 is the only OS currently available for this device. So.. labeling is a bit redundant right now.

Thanks for your response and the clarification and with all due respect, the standard naming convention for Android operating systems is in the format of Android <version number> <dessert codename>. I have been flashing ROMs to several devices before there was any Android and have been doing so on a dozen or so Android devices that I have for the past 6 months as well as guiding others in doing so by writing about it - I write about these for a living.
However, one can't be expected to know all about these non-standard or manufacturer-specific ROM naming conventions for all the Android devices out there and unfortunately, I do not have every single device available to test the ROMs on before I write about them. That is why just a few words by the developer in the OP mentioning what Android version it is make things a lot easier for many of us, plus there are several users who are just starting at the flashing business and it makes things more clear to them as well on what they are getting into. Simply saying that if one doesn't know about these non-standard conventions, one shouldn't be trying these things out is similar to saying if one doesn't know how to swim, one shouldn't be getting into the swimming pool. No offense intended. =)
All that being said, keep up the good work - I really appreciate all the hard work you guys put into what you do. Please don't take my comments as a flame - they are just my views on how things can be improved for a lot of us just by a tiny bit of effort from you guys. =)
It is well known that the continuum only has 2.1. Therefore unless there was a 2.2 leak for it (which would be noted) it can be assume by any reasonable person that its a 2.1 rom.

Agreed but 'well known' can be relative =) What's well-known to the developer community for a particular device might not be well-known to many who are coming across the flashing scene for the device in question for the first time, despite their prior experience with other Android devices. And as leaks are not out of the question either, just adding two words about the Android version just makes things a bit more clear for everyone, that's all I meant to say.

If you don't know what OS your phone is already running, or how they're doing the naming convention, you are likely going to cause yourself massive problems soon. If someone can't figure out About Phone to compare build versions, they likely can't figure out how to get CWM on their phone to even flash this, so it doesn't matter if the OS version is in the title. Once Froyo drops, then it may be different, but until then, you have a very thin argument at best, regardless of how many ROMs you may or may not have flashed in the past.

In my experience, not knowing the device-specific naming conventions has never bricked any of the dozens of devices I have flashed, as long as I have known that it is a ROM meant for the particular device in question. However, knowing what Android version the ROM is based on without having to ask only makes sense. This isn't about this one device in particular - the Android scene isn't similar to the iPhone scene where there is just one developer (Apple) rolling out just one OS for all the devices on the market. Android is quite fragmented and I believe simply mentioning the Android version with the ROM regardless of whether any other version is out *yet* or not only makes sense as one never knows when a newer version or a leak might be available.
It is all for the purpose of keeping things as clear to someone at first glance, as possible. Now I do know that no other version but this one has been out for the Continuum but that has been after this discussion. All I am requesting is that the OPs should consider mentioning it with the post so that even a newbie wouldn't have to ask for information as basic as this.
What I fail to see here is why this simple, rather humble request should be seen as such a debatable topic by you guys, when it doesn't even require much effort. Heck, all it requires is typing 'Android' followed by the version number. Is it asking for too much?
Okay, this is getting really off-topic and degenerating fast. There are plenty of other threads saying what DL17 is so just hopping out to the Android Development forum would have answered your question. That said, Android ROMs do often include the version, but not always.
It's not that big of a deal. Let it go.

So, what's the verdict. Did Big Red kick us to the curb?

We've been EOL for a few months but they did say the GB update would be coming... we saw that early build leak and then nothing.
Is the Droid Incredible the new Droid Eris?
I was hoping for some kind of update before they start releasing those fancy new Windows Phones and I bid adieu to Android. I'm thinking of just finally breaking down and rooting.
Where is the easiest, most straight forward instructions on how to root this puppy. A few ROMS look nice... I figure I might as well try them out.
http://unrevoked.com/ unrevoked is a one click solution for root. Just root. Try out some roms, make a backup of your stock rom if you're unhappy.
Root is the best thing you can ever do to this phone.

Dear XXXXXXXXX,
We are more than happy to be able to provide some clarity to the situation at hand.
Currently, our developers have to work with Verizon to determine when and if a ROM upgrade will be available. Unfortunately, there is no estimated time for availability of any ROM update. Please check the HTC America website for any software updates that may be released, http://www.htc.com/us. Just click on the support link then choose your device.
XXXXXXX, we do apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number.
Sincerely,
Samantha
I only care because of source code & this is Verizon telling HTC not to update. It's fairly obvious that HTC had intentions of continued support.

I know it can be hard for people to justify taking 5 minutes to write an email they think is pointless but I would like to encourage you all to. Verizon will not change their mind but maybe we can get HTC to continue support on their site. I dunno. I was polite but informed. I simply said that I knew they had plans for it & that older or similar hardware (desire, evo, etc) had received the update so I know it's not for a lack of compatibility or power. I also mentioned my displeasure at the fact that they would rather cater to Verizon than support current customers & they might want to take a page out of apples playbook in that regard.
Lastly I let them know that this would be remembered on my next purchase.
Above all be polite but informed.
Well I just finished my second reply. Basically restating previous points made in further detail but with an emphasis on the fact that apple can't sue them for emulating their politics free policy on supporting their current customers which is a major key to their success.
Once again I implore all of you to be the squeaky wheel. It worked for the desire community. So please people, lets demand some grease.

We're not even talking about being rooted or not. We're talking about an update that should have been released already that will bring with it more fixes and other Rom components we need to keep development alive for our phone. I used to love CM but it definitely did not blow my mind, lol. Its just Android with another overlay.
Tv out and 720p camera don't exist in all the GB releases (customs or leak). It won't till the GB OTA or RUU is released, if ever.
I'll see if I can shoot em an email in the a.m. Wifi is spotty where I'm at currently.

Visually, there's no difference between 2.2 and the leaked 2.3. If it's that big of a deal to you, root your **** and install the leaked 2.3. It runs fine.
If you want to get more out of your phone, go with CM7.

Posting what Koush said from G+

For the people that are not on G+ or follow a few of the cyanogenmod team members that are on it I wanted to repost what Koush said about an hour ago. I know people are waiting for CM7 on the E4GT but at the same time pestering the dev's is not going to get us anywhere and in turn could get them upset.
Epic 4G Touch Users: The devices were donated to us by RootzWiki, with absolutely no strings or expectations attached. Please stop asking for ETAs, it's extremely irritating and pretty disheartening.
Regardless, for those asking about Epic 4G Touch, here's what has been done with it so far:
The first official template/guide for building Samsung recoveries, specifically tested on Epic 4G Touch:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/8296-gui...rkmod-recovery-into-samsunginitramfs-devices/
It also helped add external/internal sd card support in CWR and RM:

https://github.com/CyanogenMod/andr...mmit/89ed0b7355e93c145bb40483db5f79766a00e7df
You may not appreciate it, since it doesn't get you CM7 immediately. But this is the kind of work that streamlines the process for future Samsung devices getting properly supported and mainlined.

The fact that Samsung can't even get off their ass to fix such a serious problem like LOS much less update their phones definitely makes people antsy about getting AOSP (which also helps bring other development)
Thanks for the update! I really need to follow them on Google+
Koush is the man! Noobs....let him be.
For what its worth I don't think the hangup is Samsung and lies more in the hands of Sprint who apparently have had a Samsung update submission and haven't done anything with it...for various reasons given I don't understand.
In addition to Samsung stepping up their game since the Samsung S's releases (namely beginning with SGS2 they also tried to counter their poor update record.
During the time I had the SGS2 from April through July we had THREE Samsung updates...coming fairly quickly after known issues.
The carrier here is the roadblock.
Lesson? Get the Nexus Prime.

The problem with the idea that Sprint is holding up the updates is three fold:
1) Why would Sprint hold up the LOS fix? They're losing money on constant credits and device exchanges.
2) Samsung has a history, no matter what carrier, of not being anywhere near prompt with updates.
3) Also, why would Sprint hold up updates for only Samsung devices? Other device makers don't seem to have issues.
I think the fact is, Samsung sees the international market as more important than the U.S., and is even less concerned with the CDMA market.
I am so exited! Got my phone and stock drove me CRAZY within a few hours. The folks at CM seriously spoil us. We are so lucky to have them. I don't know why the small group of geniuses at CM can develop a ROM that is AWESOME and the stock ROMs suck so bad. I mean, she wouldn't anyone want to know what their battery percentage is, or have options for their dock and lock screen style, or not throw their battery and performance in the dumpster!
Not only does CM put out awesome ROMs in a timely manner, they do it across like twenty devices and eight manufacturers for free! ! ! Friggin miraculous. Anyway, thank you! Let's not be impatient because the miracle takes a couple weeks longer than convenient.

Sprint reply to my email re: E4GT ICS issues

Sent an email to Sprint explaining my issues with battery life after ICS update. Here is the response I got. Just thought I would share
Thank you for contacting Sprint. I apologize for the inconvenience that
you have experienced with your phone.
There is no known issue related to the Software upgrade to Ice Cream
Sandwich on Samsung Galaxy SII handset.
Please visit your nearest Sprint Repair Center for assistance and ask
them to perform a diagnostic test on your phone.
To shorten your wait time at one of our stores, you can make an
appointment online or over the phone. It's easy to find a Sprint store
that is convenient for you; simply visit sprintstorelocator.com.
Alternatively, please call Sprint Technical Support at 1-888-211-4727
and follow the prompts for technical assistance. To enable testing, it
is important you call us from a phone other than the Sprint phone you
are having trouble with.
Please reply to this email or visit sprint.com if we can be of
assistance.
Sincerely,
Julie K.
Sprint
not trying to be rude but if you are on stock ics and you are having bad battery life you should probably look at your battery. Don't expect to get over a day with these phones, but stock Ics is pretty good on battery life.
I'm sorry but there is no way in hell that sprint does not know what is going on. They do know what is going on period. One good look at their forums over at sprint says so.
That email you go back looks like a standard form letter ( email ) that they just push out to get you off their backs.
Those emails are automated.
They scan for key-word phrases, and automatically respond with pre-set emails.
I can guarantee no person at Sprint read it.
They don't even copy and paste anymore, just a script that responds!
Are you sure its ICS and not some rogue program you installed?
I would suggest a hard reset and leave the phone stock (IE - not install any apps) for 24-48 hours and see if you still have battery issues.
Or it could very well be your actual battery....
I do know of one issue I have seen with a few ROMs and kernels. There is a issue where if you have the notification light enabled and you get a notification then it keeps the phone from entering deep sleep. Now I will say this issue didn't seem present on stock FF18. If you're not running a stock kernel I suggest flashing Chris41Gs stock SAFE kernel. It doesn't seem to be plagued by this bug. Just something I've noticed and thought I would share.

You're not alone. There are a bunch of us having issues with the released ICS. I'm probably going to revert to Caulkin's EL29. That was the best I've had so far. I've talked to sprint and they don't seem to care too terribly much. Initially they claimed a network outage for my connection issues, but when I told them it's everywhere I go the rep didn't have much else to say. It seems that they released ICS without really testing, which is frustrating. This is as much Google and Samsung's faults as Sprints.

Initially they claimed a network outage for my connection issues, but when I told them it's everywhere I go the rep didn't have much else to say. It seems that they released ICS without really testing, which is frustrating. This is as much Google and Samsung's faults as Sprints.

I think its mostly Samsung and sprint fault Google has no fault in this update and of course sprint reps and techs not going to care cuz there's nothing they could do plus I'm pretty sure they hoping for Samsung to hurry up with that patch so people would stop calling them and complaining about the failure of the ics update.
Its funny cuz everyone wanted ics people here in xda well for this device was impatient and was rushing Samsung for the update which now everyone is hating it for having issues lol well this is what you get, me on the other hand I could careless for the ota because source was the major big deal once I read that ota and the leaks where the same their wasn't no reason for me to take the ota update then since there's really no difference heck I Odin back to el29 got on caulks 3.0 gb rom and I'm going to stay there till the devs finish compiling or doing what ever it is that they do with source kernel, once its ready and ics roms are better and much more stable with kernel source that's when ill go back to ics I think that's the best idea to do but I know that's kinda hard for some of you flashaholics out there.

Your not being a **** at all its just basically the truth there's folks out here that act like little kids and are impatient to received there candy and mind you the devs that are working real hard shares and make these candies for free, heck I'm a flashaholic myself but I have other hobbies besides flashing that could keep me entertain that's what some of these folks here need if you check the dev forums you'll see so much useless post referring (omg I can't wait for the next update, or omg freaking awesome there's a from update thanks alot I'm downloading now) like if the devs doesn't know that your going to download it I mean yea its good to give your respect and good comments and such but I think instead of cluttering the dev forums with useless non info about issues the bad and the good about the rom just hit the thanks button for these incredible devs.
Geez sorry I just had to rant cuz idk how these mods and devs can handle it

LOL, wow, apparently opened a can of worms here. The point of my post was merely to let other xda users know that I contacted sprint and they told me there is no known issue with the ICS update on the E4GT.
Love you all

You do realize there were 3 weeks without an RDF? Sprint couldn't take that into thought to make bug fixes? There's plenty of time for us to wait.

I guarantee most people problems will be fixed if they did a clean install. Not many people were *****ing when it was just a leak. When i was running FF18, battery was as good as GB. I got 5+ hours of display time.
I had great battery life on most if not all of leaks. The difference was, I almost always did clean installs. I'd bet the battery issues are related to old GB app data not playing nice on the ICS base, which is why most that have done a factory reset after upgrading to ICS have seen their battery life improve.

couldn't agree more... additionally to vent a little since this seems like a good post to do it in I'm getting really tired constant onslaught of "bug" posts about the stock ics ota... most of them are specific to the user and not an actually bug ( ie "this isnt exactlly the same as it was in gingerbread im anggggry" ) and it doesn't seem to be appropriate for xda... take that sort of stuff to the sprintusers forums, the devs here are not going to be patching the stock ota for you. If you find an actual bug in a dev's rom please use the dev thread to report it, the dev will thank you, and believe it or not this is the actual point of the dev threads, despite what the thousands of posts saying "omg rom update thanx you!!!1!1 flashing now" would lead you to believe ( use the damn thanks button as opposed to cluttering up the dev thread, that's why its there)....ugh, this place would be a lot better if people would learn to use the damn search bar as well, as its not super fun to see the same questions in thread after thread.... also get off my lawn... /end rant

That's the number one thing that annoys me just seeing the same questions after post after post for example look at Chris 41 new thread for his new kernel in the op it states everything you need to know I mean everything and yet folks still tend to ask I feel like if your not going to read then don't flash at all cuz the dev do what they can and post all the info that is needed so folks won't have to clutter the dev forums with the same questions over and over but it seems like folks these days are to lazy to read or are just straight up dumb.

I have stock (completelly stock) EL29 Samsung epic touch 4g and I updated via a sprint update (legal) and my phone reboots constantly and battery life is not that good. I know is not the battery because prior to that I went all day with one charge.
use stock mail, text, phone and contacts the only program not stock is the go launcher.
So I think a clean install might not be the solution.
Hehehe i hope nobody read my pre coffe nerd rage.
Sorry, all!

any devs into GLIDE CM 10???

the long waited tegra 2 ics is now available so means the drivers to put HWA into function is available too...is it mean that a full working CM10 (or jellybean) rom will be developed soon seems all the crucial drivers are available now...
but 1 thing i found that there are less strong or experienced developers are using the glide as their phone and cause us have less power custom roms and kernels...
maybe we need to promote our phone to those optimus 2x and galaxy r developers...they have strong devs there...cause the devs were using those phone which is much popular and familiar than the glide, but they have lower hardware spec, no keyboard and with 512 only ram...and the devs did a good job on optimized them...
i believe our phone will be freaking STRONG if there are numbers of devs willing to optimized it...

Yes but people are usually interested in the hardware they have purchased. So how do you get someone who does not have the hardware interested in helping us out? Please recall even DMan had someone lone him a phone for him to help out. The glide is a great phone but unfortunately has not sold as much, as other popular phones.

maybe we can gift a GLIDE to devs like owain94 from optimus 2x or arcee...they are strong devs and they have a real good base knowledge on tegra 2 device...
We have dman workng on a rom as we speak... this should of been posted in the general section to btw
I suspect he is but has dman said he is working on a new ROM? I'm curious if he is making his own ROM or porting CM. I think Inception was just a stripped down official version of 2.3.5. I would love to see a CM 10 port and not just a repacked stripped ROM.
Oh my gosh with all the discussions about this. BE PATIENT. You all have no idea how much time it takes. Take a look at Inception. It took 1 week just to theme. If you want a stable, JB rom for bounty, the Collective doesn't release half ass working JB builds. Take a look
dman3285 from the Gnote thread said:
Jellybean will be coming soon.. but only when its stable.. no need to release a half ass working build.. just an update.. we are known for stability, not for being the first to the finish line, quality is our goal...

Please forgive me, I'm sorry for being harsh but I've seen so many threads about this in such a short period of time. Dman and his team the Collective dev for 4-5 devices. I've been learning dev for 6 months and so far all I can do is basic tweaking to apks and decompiling them, as well as putting them in a zip.
Seriously. Just be patient, some of you. Reported for moving, btw
P.S:
This is not a port. It's compiling from source. 10 times harder and time consuming. But less chance for bugs.
P.P.S:
Inception was made without the device. It would've been near impossible to build AOSP blindly. (AOSP is pure, vanilla, Android)
P.P.P.S:
This is not an opinion poll. The devs make it how they like it, you're lucky they post it for you. They could just keep it to themselves. Feature requests are always good, but not "I like CM but I don't want a stripped modified ROM"
Thanks
After having spent the past 5 hours flashing various kernels/ROMs in my gf's xperia x10 mini pro due to various bugs, I will have to agree - in the end, stability is a must, and I am certain dman is working his magic as we speak, no need to get impatient

Everyone is being patient. Were thankful to have any devs working on this device. I just havent seen any posts directly from dman about what he's working on for the Glide. I could have missed the post, thats why I asked. But it would be cool to see a post directly from him about it and not just speculation.
Thread moved
No matter how patient everyone is being, these types of threads still keep getting started in Development. They do not belong there. They belong in General. Keep them in general. Thank you for your cooperation.
Please, everyone, just take a sit, grab a drink, and wait for dman to do his magic
I'm all for quality over a rushed job. Dev'ing is hard, especially for an under-popular device like our own. Fewer fellow devs to help out and carry the load, and more people putting the pressure on because they're impatiently excited.
Give the devs their time, it will be alright. I'm still happy with INCEPTIONv1, more so than the leaked ICS.
