[Q] Dangers of rooted sprint gnex? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi.
I just bought a galaxy nexus for sprint off eBay for $183.50.
The post had HD pics and all sides of the phone looked super clean and few, if any, marks. It also advertised it was rooted with clean ESN and I think the rooted part lowered the price.(I sniped bid at 7 seconds with $6.50 bid max.)
Anyway. Although eBay protects the purchase and the seller has 100% positive feedback, I'm a little paranoid yo why I got a good deal.
Is there any permanent damage that can be done by rooting like Google wallet NFC lock up or erasing imei number when flashing.??? Also does the sprint gnex use a sim card?
Im coming from the ns4g and been around the block rooting but I don't know everything.
I don't have money to buy new phones left and right so did I grab a good deal or should I be worried?
All answers will get my thanks.

If you don't do anything that requires root, then you don't need to worry a bit. Even if you do things that require root, it's ok if you know what you're doing.
The most common problem that people have is bootloop, which can be fixed my restoring nandroid backup.

Rooting doesn't really mess up Google Wallet, however if he flashed a custom rom after setting up GW, he could have bricked the secure element. I'm pretty sure just having the phone rooted won't cause the IMEI to disappear, unless he did it intentionally.
Also the Sprint version of the Gnex doesn't have a sim card slot. Only GSM Gnex use sim cards, the Sprint version is a CDMA, like Verizon.

Cteneyck. It was just last week you said goodbye to us at ns4g and I thought I was going to be stuck for another year but hopefully eBay works and not everyone jumps on the new nexus.

Its showed the pic of the about phone settings and its was running cm10 nightly sept 21. So it was working a month ago. Any good way to physically check if its good? Like water damage and fried CPUs?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

Well if it was water damaged some components wouldn't work correctly, like volume/power buttons etc. Also if the CPU was fried it would not work at all

I'm wondering if I can like flash the factory ROM/radio/bootloader for the Sprint Galaxy Nexus onto the Verizon one and basically turn it into a Sprint phone?
I know they're really the same device so I think it could be done with the Nexus Toolkit easily, but before I try I want to know if it really can be done, I know any carriers Sim Card works so why not this too?
Thanks to any that provide info

Not a chance.
verizon cdma radio will work fine on sprint, no need to try to flash a sprint one.
lte obviously will not work at all no matter what you try.
of course getting sprint to recognize the phone is another matter and more trouble then its worth considering the same phone is available on sprint with working lte.

They are not the same device. They are sufficiently different hardware that you wouldn't be able to activate even if you found a Sprint CSR that would be willing to lose their job by adding the MEID to their database

I've got a question for the GSM folks...

I've been with Verizon since their beginning and I've recently dumped them to go the prepaid route. I've currently bought and sim card and ported my number over to my new carrier while using the bring your own device plan. I'd like to get a GSM Gnex. My question is, is it just as simple as popping out my sim card from the my old phone and putting the sim in the new GSM Gnex to swap phones? Thanks.
yup, that simple.
Thats the beauty of gsm, all you have to do is swap the sim card. If your on att or tmobile, the phone will detect the correct apn settings. Im not sure about the other prepaid companies

That is the beauty and ugliness of GSM. If you want to steal phones then steal a GSM phone because there is no tracking of it. Just pop out their sim and put in yours. Whereas with VZW and Sprint the ESN would get locked. The only way for someone to use a stolen CDMA phone is to flash it to another company. But the government is trying to stop that too.
... either way your phone is stolen. A thief isn't gonna stop and say "oh this is the CDMA version never mind. There are ways to get around a bad ESN. They still sell them on craigslist. Just don't leave your phone laying around and you won't have a problem.

Thanks for the replies. j I just ordered a galaxy nexus from the play store. I was pretty sure that's what needed to be done, but I just wanted some reassurance.

[Q] Flashing a GSM rom on a CDMA phone? [Solved]

I have a galaxy nexus (Verizon) that i do not use as a phone, so basically i ONLY use the wifi no 3g/4g i dont even have a sim card. So i was wondering since i dont care about the cell radios, could i flash a GSM stock rom, so i could get android 4.2. Would this work? or would it totally destroy my phone?

You probably shouldn't do it especially when flashing incorrect bootloader.
In theory, it should work, but since the APN's will get f'ed up it may just not boot or give you a lot of force closes.

It should work.
Talking g from experience here.
I once accidentally installed a CDMA ROM on my GSM GNex.
It booted and everything worked except for the network and in Phone Status I had Network: unknown/unavailable and bunch of other things like that.

moving from verizon to sprint

I'm wanting to join my fiance's plan on sprint. I have a verison galaxy s3 currently. Am I able to just flash a sprint rom and have them activate it on the sprint network, or will I need to get a new phone when the time comes? I really don't want to have to get a new one with that expense if I don't have to.

As far as I'm aware, it will not work like that. You most likely will have to get a new phone.

Incorrect. Sprint uses a SIM for their LTE as well (all the carriers do). It's just embedded and not visible. Doesn't really matter to O.P, as he/she would need to get a Sprint phone anyway.

Come on that's splitting hairs..a SIM card is recognized as removable to allow portability of a device from one account to another (or even carrier to another) just by swapping the SIM card. Let's not confuse the guy. Sprint SGS3 does not have a SIM card, it has an imbedded chip. Otherwise it would be no issue but having the right sized screwdriver to remove and swap a Sprint 'SIM card' with a Verizon one. The hardware is different, thus you cannot do this.

Technically it's not the same, they have the same function but an embedded sim looks more like a chip soldered to the board and not an SD cardish shaped card. They serve the same function but do it slightly different. Kind of like a car and a truck, they both have 4 wheels and serve the same purpose (transportation) but they technically aren't the same thing. The main difference is removable sims are easily reprogrammed, while an embedded sim isn't(has to be detached from the board and put in a special reader that unlocks the programming function). I guess embedded sims would be considered more secure than a removable from several standpoints. User standpoint its not easily swapped out with another in the event of theft, and the data stored on it isn't as easily accessible to a thief. From the carrier standpoint its not as easy to reprogram and impossible to swap so the device can be unlocked to work on another carrier.

Sorry, you're wrong.
Whether hairs are being split or not, this statement "Verizon uses sim cards for their LTE phones while sprint doesn't." is factually wrong. Sprint does use a SIM for their LTE.
Like someone else pointed out, would you say that one phone with a non-removable battery DOES NOT TECHNICALLY use a battery versus a phone with a removable battery, just because etc etc...?
...and what would swapping a Sprint SIM with Verizon achieve? Sprint's LTE is on 1900mhz and Verizon is on 700mhz? You do realize that...

I know it has a built in sim card which cannot be removed so I basically consider it not having a sim card if I can't remove it and swap it out with another

Verizon - Have a new phone coming - can I just pop in my current sim and go?

I am currently on Verizon, with a Galaxy Nexus. I bought a Droid DNA off of eBay (really good deal), and want to know if I can just pop in my sim card, and go. I know the sizes are different, so I can use a sim cutter, and go to town on it. When I was checking the ESN with the Verizon rep, they said I would need to call to activate the phone. I've read on the interweb you can swap sims on 4G phones with no issue. So, much like everything on the interweb, there is conflicting information. What's the good word?
Actually both the DNA and gnex require micro sims, so it should fit right away. and yes, you can just pop in the sim and wait for it to recognize, but do it on the sense ROM before gaining s-off and flashing roms because I remember reading that cm doesn't have a certain file or something that prevents you from activating it when you run a custom ROM. Anyways, to answer your question yes
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Verizon would need to activate because they use cdma and only use approved devices on their network.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Well Verizon exclusive devices like the droid DNA are pre-approved, and as long as it was sold by Verizon period, and is a 4g device, then you can swap sims all you want.

But this seems to contradict what is on Verizon's own website:
http://support.verizonwireless.com/faqs/VZAccess/4g_sim_card.html
Can I use my Verizon Wireless 4G SIM in more than one device?
Yes; the Verizon Wireless 4G SIM card contains all of your subscriber information, so the SIM card is portable and can be used in any Verizon Wireless-certified 4G device. All usage will be billed to the account associated with the 4G SIM card.

I took the Sim card from my wife's stratosphere and put it into my old droid charge and it worked just fine. All I had to do was wait for it to recognize the Sim.

I left sprint for verizon a little over a year ago. I have had no remorse leaving. Not to get too far off topic, but the only real benefit to sprint is their unlimited data. But since you can't connect to their network, or it's slow as hell, what's the point?
