I've been with Verizon since their beginning and I've recently dumped them to go the prepaid route. I've currently bought and sim card and ported my number over to my new carrier while using the bring your own device plan. I'd like to get a GSM Gnex. My question is, is it just as simple as popping out my sim card from the my old phone and putting the sim in the new GSM Gnex to swap phones? Thanks.
yup, that simple.
Thats the beauty of gsm, all you have to do is swap the sim card. If your on att or tmobile, the phone will detect the correct apn settings. Im not sure about the other prepaid companies

That is the beauty and ugliness of GSM. If you want to steal phones then steal a GSM phone because there is no tracking of it. Just pop out their sim and put in yours. Whereas with VZW and Sprint the ESN would get locked. The only way for someone to use a stolen CDMA phone is to flash it to another company. But the government is trying to stop that too.
... either way your phone is stolen. A thief isn't gonna stop and say "oh this is the CDMA version never mind. There are ways to get around a bad ESN. They still sell them on craigslist. Just don't leave your phone laying around and you won't have a problem.

Thanks for the replies. j I just ordered a galaxy nexus from the play store. I was pretty sure that's what needed to be done, but I just wanted some reassurance.

If you buy a GN (galaxy nexus) from ebay and the carrier is vzw and doesn't come with a sim will it still work or do you have to root it?

Hi, i'm buying a Samsung galaxy s3, and i worry about bad ESN phone that i can't use on my tmobile account.
For that reason, i think i will pay for a s3 ATT ( if ATT s3 is a bad ESN phone than i still can unlock and use it with my tmobile account, right? )
But i hear someone said that if i use a unlock ATT phone then tmobile data plan won't work on that att phone. I don't know if this is correct information or not.
Can someone help me out?
Thank you very much.
Also Is there anyone to avoid bad esn phone on craiglists?
Furthermore, is there anyone to buy a bad ESN Tmobile phone, and somehow i can use it with tmobile ?
Once its been blacklisted it will not work with that specific carrier. If you want to buy one off craigslist...have the seller meet you at a at&t store or T-Mobile and have the rep check if the imei for you. If the seller is unwilling to do that...don't trust it.

I hear some story that the phone is good at the time people trade phones. However after 1 month, it become a bad ESN phone.
If Tmobile rep check the phone for me, will it avoid that situation?

honestly, even if the tmobile check, the imei will still be good during the transaction. it isn't until the seller contacts asurion which will most likely be a couple days later to report it lost or stolen. Im not sure how this can be prevented. Some people suggest to call t-mobile have the imei registered to your account right away, or even to leave a note on your account for it. But most likely asurion is the one who are blacklisting the phones not t-mobile.
This isn't CDMA. ESN phones are no good the moment they are determined that they are stolen or tied to account with a over due balance. On the other hand. GSM phones usually don't get blacklisted. And even if it is blacklisted it is only blacklisted to its specific carrier. So you shouldn't have a problem bringing the phone to T-Mobile.

Sound right.
Furthermore, may I ask if i buy a ATT S3 to unlock and use it with Tmobile, will Tmobile data plan work on S3 ATT phone?
i c some thread said that it won't work, or it won't function fully. is that true?

You will not get 3G. If I am correct you will only pick up EDGE data since the networks run on different bands and AT&T phones are set to run on AT&T bands and not T-Mobile.

Is there a way you can modify a band settings software wise, in order to work with TMO 4g prepaid plan? I have an i747 ATT unlocked and would like to use with TMO next month. Thanks for your input.
That I am aware of no. There is thread started on here were there is a bounty to get it working, but it seems like it is not going to work.

I juts bought an unlocked AT&T S3 today and i am using T-Mobiles prepaid plan. So far i have been getting 4G in some places but EDGE mostly and i want to know what can be done about this. Im thinking of selling or trading this phone for a T-Mobile unlocked version. If there is anything else that can be done about this do let me know.
Hi Forum,
Does any one know if an Unlocked Sprint phone can made call on T Mobile or AT&T network. I check out the spec, and seem like this my be possible. Sprint Note2 got all the bands.

Sim card holder. I found an ad on eBay which a seller has put in a new Sim card holder for a Sprint Note2. I ask if he test the phone if it can made call using ATT or T Mobile; he said he does not know
Boy o boy sounds like a pretty good gimmick selling something that he doesn't know that works and somebody willing to buy it even better... if you do some reading and some googling you can find info about this....
Rockin it from my macknote2
The hardware IS in our phones. You do have to buy that adapter and replace some of the innards of the device but from what I've seen once you do it the phone is ready to accept the sim. You just have to replace certain hardware. Sprint decided to go with an integrated sim.
Edit: Maybe not so easy? See this thread

I got my unlock code directly from AT&T. I do not have another carrier sim card to place in the phone (that will fit, this is a smaller than standard size sim card). There are people in my office that have T-mobile, sprint, or Virgin but have full size sim cards.
Any suggestions or instructions??
Thanks!!
I've heard about a few people going into t mobile and asking to borrow one. They shouldnt mind they are probably thinking you'll use on tmob after unlocking

I'm wondering - would a SIM from an AT&T MVNO (such as RedPocket) be considered a "non AT&T SIM card" for purposes of unlocking?
I just bought an "H20 Wireless" micro sim card on Ebay for .99.
Hopefully it will do the trick...will post an update (if anyone cares) if it does or doesn't work when I receive it.
Why don't you just store the code and use it when you get any non att sim? I mean, why waste money, even a $, unless well you have a willing non att friend who can lend you his sim.

Got it. I didn't think of selling phone. I was thinking on my lines given that I am a frequent traveler, and get code from AT&T within 90 days or earlier of getting a new phone.
OK. so i put the H2O sim card in and reboted several times and all I get is "sim card not provisioned".
So I just borrowed a Verizon sim card from someone in the office that has a Verizon Galaxy S III and got the same thing.
I am not being prompted for an unlock code?
What Am I doing wrong???
I am currently on Verizon, with a Galaxy Nexus. I bought a Droid DNA off of eBay (really good deal), and want to know if I can just pop in my sim card, and go. I know the sizes are different, so I can use a sim cutter, and go to town on it. When I was checking the ESN with the Verizon rep, they said I would need to call to activate the phone. I've read on the interweb you can swap sims on 4G phones with no issue. So, much like everything on the interweb, there is conflicting information. What's the good word?
Actually both the DNA and gnex require micro sims, so it should fit right away. and yes, you can just pop in the sim and wait for it to recognize, but do it on the sense ROM before gaining s-off and flashing roms because I remember reading that cm doesn't have a certain file or something that prevents you from activating it when you run a custom ROM. Anyways, to answer your question yes
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Verizon would need to activate because they use cdma and only use approved devices on their network.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Well Verizon exclusive devices like the droid DNA are pre-approved, and as long as it was sold by Verizon period, and is a 4g device, then you can swap sims all you want.

But this seems to contradict what is on Verizon's own website:
http://support.verizonwireless.com/faqs/VZAccess/4g_sim_card.html
Can I use my Verizon Wireless 4G SIM in more than one device?
Yes; the Verizon Wireless 4G SIM card contains all of your subscriber information, so the SIM card is portable and can be used in any Verizon Wireless-certified 4G device. All usage will be billed to the account associated with the 4G SIM card.

I'll find out for sure when my phone arrives in the mail, and I'll update this thread.
I took the Sim card from my wife's stratosphere and put it into my old droid charge and it worked just fine. All I had to do was wait for it to recognize the Sim.

I left sprint for verizon a little over a year ago. I have had no remorse leaving. Not to get too far off topic, but the only real benefit to sprint is their unlimited data. But since you can't connect to their network, or it's slow as hell, what's the point?
