Sorry if this has been answered.. I searched but didnt find the answer.
Anyway I bought a s3 last week and the charging port didnt work but it had a charger and extra battery with it so i didnt think much of it. It is a i897 with 2.2 firmware.
I dont like the 2.2 and was going to root it and update to 2.3 or ICS but quickly realized all of the info on that relies on connecting to a computer which i cannot do. So my question is if anyone can point me in the right direction to root and update this phone or do I just sell it and recoup as much of my money as possible and try to get another phone?
Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks

Mine hAs froyo ...this is a 2010 model phone
Sorry it is a captivate not s3
I'll clarify: that phone, i897, is not a galaxy s3. The captivate is a much older, albeit exceptional (per its time) phone.

Hello. I'm new here. Be easy ^^
I found someone selling a Samsung Galaxy S II (Hercules) 16GB - Titanium (T-Mobile) unlocked and rooted? Is this real? And can we use his ROM to get everybody else rooted? I hope this gets to someone who can really use it if it is real.
I can't post external links yet:

I don't think that person really knows what rooted means. He mentions that it's rooted and gives you access to wireless tether. I think this person is using terms from maybe another phone that was rooted. He doesn't realize that tethering can happen without root on some tmobile phones.
Yah I'd be a little on edge about that since were not rooted yet or the person was confused and doesn't know what rooted means?

Ok. I sent him a message to verify it properly anyways. If it's legit, I'll let you guys know.
Development/pre-release versions of this phone are root-able since they came with Android 2.3.3 instead of 2.3.5, so it could be that.
Hi guys,
i was wondering if its possible to flash my galaxy nexus to samsung galaxy s2 rom.
what i want is the exact gs2 rom(same launcher, contacts etc. but the official gs2 software) on my nexus device.
is there a way to do that? maybe with odin , to flash the nexus with sg2 kernel and rom ?
please help
Now now lets play nice, simpley telling the guy he needs a touch wiz rom or theme would be plenty, I think I saw a couple of these around in the dev area and theme areas. Touchwiz is the keyword as that's the style your after.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I really cannot understand such requests, if I really want touchwiz then i would sell my nexus and buy a GS2 or wait for GS3.
I am coming from an sgs, on the sgs the first thing I did was rooting, flashing cwm and then flashed a rom, after that I installed launcher pro to get rid of touchwiz, later I switched to cm7.
Now finally I have a nexus and for sure I will never go back to bloatware loaded device, my next device will be again a nexus.
Who in their right mind would want TouchWiz instead of a beautiful stock Android 4 experience?

Your absolutely right and its part of the fun of android all the freedom you get to do pretty much what ever you want. My view on miui is the same, I'm not a fan but its cool to have the option.

There's devs working on a few ports already, very early progress tho. I'm sure there's going to be more ports from others down the road. You can follow the progress here....

Android is all about options. It's a open source operating system people can do whatever they want. It's not like if a developer wants to invest his or her time into porting touchwiz would ruin your day.

While I think options are good for Android I have to agree about why would you get a Galaxy Nexus if you want TouchWiz? I say this because its very similar spec wise to the SGS2 and I'm sure the SGS3 will blow it out of the water. Unless you are just using it until the SGS3 comes out. Either way there is no need to call this guy/girl names because Android is all about options.
first I wanna clear things out, he didn't ask for just touchwiz launcher, he asked for a full gs2 rom, its a different story if he asked just for the launcher, that's the reason why I said he should better get a gs2 or wait for gs3.
I've always wanted a Google phone and my shift sux lately. I just bought a sprint nexus from amazon and ill see it in 2 days. I was hoping someone could tell me my root options as ill wanna do that right away. What's the preferred rom on this phone? Cm9?

I don't see what is unfamiliar about GSM. You get choice of whichever network you want in any country. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA so obviously a GSM Nexus wouldn't work on them.

Why would you suggest that? I'm already familiar with ADB, commands and such, so I can with no issues, however a toolkit seems quicker and easier, no??

I'm really considering the Galaxy Nexus for my next phone. I'm just concerned about updates because of the crap that is happening with the lack of ICS for the EVO 3D. So, does the Sprint Galaxy Nexus receive updates as fast as other networks?
And, I don't root, so don't tell me to do that to fix updates.
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D using Tapatalk 2
Your outta luck if you don't want to root. Sprint sucks with updates. And we already have a port of jelly bean....
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
You're just waiting for Sprint to approve the updates after Google completes them. As with Verizon, it's going to take some weeks after the GSM model gets it for any CDMA model to get it.

We don't actually know anything yet. The Sprint Galaxy Nexus came with 4.0.4 out of the box so there's been no need for an OTA previously and Google has not officially released 4.1 yet. So we've got no specific OTA experience for the Galaxy Nexus. The nexus S 4G did not get Ice Cream Sandwich very quick but neither did many GSM Nexus S. There were problems with the ICS rollout across the board. But here's hoping that they'll get Jellybean right. Of course the rest of us have been using JB for a long time now because we'll he damned if we're gonna wait for Sprint. Or even Google for that matter
You can flash JB without root.
Waiting for ota's is not allowed here

Thanks for the answer, guys. I wish Google would come up with an easier solution because the carriers are screwing us.
And, for those of you screaming "root", you don't understand that some don't have the time to do it. I won't give up my limited family time to figure it out. And, trust me, you don't want to live my day. If I was still young and single, I would probably do it.

Rooting takes a matter of minutes.... This is a Google device. It's not a locked down HTC. However flashing and keeping up with roms and such is where the time comes in. I know plenty of married people on here..... With children.... That always still have time to mess around with their phone. you don't have to be on here everyday, you can't still root and keep up. just think about it a little more.

If you come to xda with such question, one expects an answer with the word root in it. Why we do it ......... custom Roms, kernels, in depth screen settings, etc, and the must important aspect in my opinion..... the hard work put in by people that love open source.
After flashing jelly bean, I personally do not need to be trying different Roms, maybe theme or kernel, I am the only person that has bragging rights to my friends to say I have the latest and greatest os on my phone.
And for that I thank you all

I think that could be right seeing as this is a tiny update in general.
Here we go again...
Please, don't create expectations or start rumours about possible ETA's.
You've seen it with the 4.1.1 update, carriers can hold up the process undefinitely if they feel like it no matter the "size" of the said update.
I read about this last night too. There's no way of knowing when or if we will ever see this officially. Just as European S3's got the multi-window already it's up to the carriers. I'm sure they'll find some way to get it in a custom rom on here when its out.
We'll probably have the Galaxy S4 before this update even arrives..

Sounds interesting but I wouldn't get my hopes up for a release any time soon.
I'll go w/ my original guess of January 17th.

So far, it would just be the international i9300 version in Poland or the UK.
Nothing for the i747 yet. You will still have to wait a few weeks for the leak.
I've been toying with the idea of changing the CSC on my phone to trick Samsung Kies to download it to my phone.

it's much more complicated than just the APKs. you need the modified jar files as well, which will boot loop a Us Gs3. search for the GS2 tutorial on how to run multiwindow to see how complicated it really is. in theory, it is possible to modify the jellybean us GS3 files to get it all running on our phones. but, it will take some talent.
