I am a real noob using Runny Rom on stock hboot, but my problem is not rom related (I think).
My rom has A2sd and I made an Ext4 partition of 1.5Gb, but after roughly 60 apps my memory was nearly full, so I kept symlinking the biggest apps and now all is working, with little lags but now I have about 130 apps on my phone and 70Mb free on my internal memory.
Titanium backup tells me that I have 1.2GB occupied on my ext4 and only 250Mb remaining. I need to see which app requests so much space, so I used Astro, but it says that /sd_ext is empty while using a terminal with ls I see all my apps. How can I find the space used by any app so I can delete it? And , anyway, so much space for only 130 apps, most of which are little utilities, some navigator (but maps are on fat), etc.
Use root exploter, or es file explorer. Astro isn't a root access app.

The screen of the desire is too small, so I used adb to list my ext partition ( adb shell -lhR /sd-ext) and save the list on my pc (Win xp).
I found some apps I never used that I'll go to delete, but I found the file /com.android.htcprofile/anr-history.txt that uses about 102Mb of spaces (yes, I symlinked htcprofile because it occupied a lot of memory, but not so much).
What is this file? Can I destroy it or reduce his size? It's an history (by his name, I have not opened it so far) so may be I can delete a lot of rows, but what program can I use, because if I use the pc it will insert control characters that android will not recognize.

I've a strange question that might or might belong in the development thread, but figured since it's a question, I'll try here first.
I'm using a Stock DeOxed Rooted Rom on my EVO.
I recently installed a few more apps and saw this pesky little warning about low on space.
When I went into my "SystemPanel" app to see how much space was left exactly and noticed that my /data folder only had around 30megs out of it's 428M available.
Ok.. time to delete some apps I thought, but then I noticed that my /system folder (Where I presume pre-installed apps live) had almost 1/3 of it's space still available (115 out of 350megs available).
So I'm wondering.....
Is there some method that I can use to install Apps directly to this folder instead of the standard /data that apps appear to go to when installed?
Is it as simple as moving the APK file with Root Explorer, or are there some under the hood items in apps that prevent this sort of thing?
I've a few rather large apps that I cannot move to the SD card due to widget problems and the like but would be perfect for the system folder if I can find a way to move them there easily.
Thoughts?

/system/app is where system apps are kept. If I remember correctly, any app can be installed into there, but you have to do through flashing an update.zip if I'm remembering properly. You may be able to take the apk that's in /data/app for the app you want to move and move it to /system/app, but I'm not sure if that will work properly or not. Someone who cooks ROMs might know more.
Also, you can partition your sd card and use true apps2sd with most ROMs. Its a little bit of work and will shorten the life of your card, but that gives you a lot more room if you need it.
I don't know that there's a way to move user apps to system. It's very possible there is a way, I've just never seen any posts about it. Apps 2 SD is usually the way to go.
ps. 30 megs?!?! Geez, how many apps do you have?

Easy peasy
First, use a true apk backup tool to backup e apk files you want to move. Titanium backup will NOT work because it compresses and distorts, and we need true apk files. I recommend file manager by adao team. Just go to applications, check what you want, and hit backup. Next, get the apk files on your computer by mounting sd and copying files from backups folder. You will lose all app data, but what can you do? Next, adb push the files to system app folder while in recovery mode (just say so if you don't know how to do this and i will tell you) and reboot. Done. Tell me if it works well.
By the way, 30 megs???
Doesn't froyo install to the sdcard if you tell it to?
I thought a2sd was obsolete
You can put apps there after changing the folder's permissions but I wouldn't recommend it. Just not a good idea to put regular apps there.

go into the android app manager and go through all your programs and click on move to sd card...
they will all still occupy some space on your nand, but not nearly as much.
Thanks for the advice, I thought it might not be as easy as moving them, oh well, just seems a shame for there to be over 100 megs I cannot do anything with.
I already had moved all I could to the SD card prior to posting this, but thanks for that advice as well, I'm sure others forget they can do that with Froyo.
As for the 30 megs I had left.. we'll it's back up to about 70 free which should be plenty for a while. (Remember we only have about 420 to start with).
Some of the big ones which could not be moved to the SD card are:
Swype (Deleted, took over 17megs)
TouchDown (12 megs.. must keep for tasks sync sadly)
Google Maps update (7.6 megs)
Documents to go (8megs)
A few various games that cannot yet be moved to the SD card at around 5megs each..
The rest are just lots of little apps.. I'm sort of an app junkie You should have seen my old Palm Centro... it was amazing!
According to Titanium, I currently have 194 'User apps', though I think a few are simply widgets, icon packs and the like.
So, I have S-OFF with custom mtd aplied on my desire. Partitions: System 250, Cache 40, Data: rest.
I also have A2SD+, so the apps should be going to my sd card.
For some reason my internal memory is going low. There's only about 17MB (11%) left. I'd like to know what is actually filling my Data-partition??
How do I do that??
I tried with adb, but it won't show me the dir sizes...

I inspected the files and folders in the /data -folder, and I bumped into this file called anr_history.txt. It was located in /data/data/com.android.htcprofiles..(if I remember correct). The size was pretty large for a text document: 14MB!!
So, i copied the file to my SD-card just to be sure, and then I erased everything fro the file-----> 14 megs free space.
Anybody knows what this file does...?
First thing, the partition sizes are default for Desire so hardly custom. Second, data for apps and things goes to your data partiton. Is your A2SD actually working right?
**EDIT**
I read a little and it maybe something to do with cachesdreset. Doing that will free something but you need to understand how A2SD works in the first place.

Hey for some days now i have not been able to instal any apps, then i checked how much space i have left on the phone and it was 2mb. now here is the thing, i got 8 apps and they are together 5mb... I have tried to delete catch stuff etc and i got nothing more, so what happend to my storage space?

-Create an appbrain account
-Install appbrain on your phone
-Sync
-Go appbrain website and click 'My Apps'
Do this to double check what you have installed.
If you're rooted, what rom are you using?
To clean my cache, i use Cache Cleaner NG.

This has always been a problem with my desire until i found out about AlphaRev. Now i've got 166MB free internal space. My suggestion is to install AlphaRev and modify the partition tables as listed in the tutorial on alpharev.nl. I would have posted a link but i can't post links yet.
From terminal emulator or adb shell type this (root required)
su
du -md 2 /data > /sdcard/data.txt
Then open your favourite file explorer and take a look at data.txt on your sdcard to find the culprit. In the file should be a list of directories and their size, just look for the biggest one.

Root your phone, and the go and Install Starburst ROM, its super fast, stable and I have 1.7gb of internal storage space to install apps
Make sure you have a class 4 SD card or better, trust me it will be the best thing you have done to your phone.
P.S dont forget to backup all your apps and stuff.

Ive had the following issue ever since I got my desire, but only now starts to irritate me.
Whats happening is that internal memory disappers randomly. For instance, when I have 30mb free space and I install an app of 4mb, Im left with 26mb of course. The weird thing, however, is that when I uninstall the 4mb app, I do not get back up to 30mb of free space but rather something like 28. Where has the remaining 2mb of memory gone to?
Additionally, when I start the day with e.g. 30mb free space, it can spontaneously jump down a couple of mb's at the end of the day (one minute I have 30mb, the next I have 27mb). Mind you, this is without touching the market and installing/uninstalling apps.
It only started bothering me today, because I had uninstalled quite alot of apps last week to have 30mb of free space, but only have 22mb of free internal memory at the moment of typing.
If anyone could help me out or could shed some light on this issue, I would be very grateful.

I think this has to do with the dalvik cache. But I am not sure. Overall, I would say: When you do not have any problem with installing/uninstalling apps or other things, do not bother about it.

Most applications have 3 parts that occupy storage space: Code (.apk), Data (user settings and preferences) and Cache(some images etc downloaded during previous sessions).
When you uninstall app, the data and cache are removed immediately. But for some apps, the .apk file is retained. It is sometimes removed after rebooting phone, sometimes immediately, otherwise not removed at all.
Use a file explorer like ES File explorer to check if you find the .apk file somewhere. To search quickly, connect phone to computer in mass storage mode, and search the mounted usb drive using usual windows\linux file search.

I have a htc desire stock orange uk, S-OFF, rooted.
download Link2sd (you have to be rooted)
With link2sd all I did was use Ubuntu and gparted to partition my 8gb sd card the 2nd partition set at 1024mb and the rest all together and both FAT32, as on the market app info it says ext2, ext3 etc etc can only be used with a custom rom.

This has been a life saver went from 17MB free to Nearly 60MB!!!!!
Also if you suddenly wondering why your memory disappears, try changing the amount of days email you have on your phone in each email account setting. Have mine set at one day. If you really need to get an older email you can just change it whenever and send and receive.
I have a really strange behavior on my data partition:
df show that the partition is almost full (1294 Mb used in a 1299 Mb partition). I got a low space warning this morning, that's how I noticed it, but I am not sure since when exactly I have so much in /data.
Now the strange thing is that I do not have so much apps installed, and indeed, using adb shell, a "du -a -d1 /data" report about 307 Mb used (157 Mb in /data/app, 83 Mbin /data/dalvik-cache, 60 Mb in /data/data). This is perfectly in line with what application manager tell me on my phone, if I quickly sum the reported spaces of the different apps installed.
I do not see any big file in the partiton (anyway, du -a should have counted files directly in data, not only directories), not even hidden files (starting with a ".", for those not familiar with unix conventions).
So now I wonder, where is this Gb of space gone? I should have at least 900 Mb free, but have 4 Mb (and this is after I removed an unused app, just after the low space warning I had 20 Kb free only!)
I suspect a rogue app doing something stupid (like keeping a very large log) or nasty (some malware), probably in the last ones I have installed....but how can it use memory without it showing somewhere (even with direct tools like "du")???
BTW, my last apps are, in reverse order of installation, blueputdroid, StabilityTest, CPU Spy, Barcode scanner,....
CPUSpy is a possible candidate for keeping a large log, but it is a quite well know app, so I somehow doubt it is the culprit...
Anybody had a similar problem, of some new ideas how to solve this? a tool that can check what use all this space on /data?
I am on CM7, nightly 110817-1717-BOOT179. I just finsihed a titanium backup of my apps, and my next step (once my battery is charged) is to reinstall CM7 after a data wipe (I am a little bit reluctant about it, cause I will have to reinstall all apps and swype.

Before cleaning data and doing a full reinstall of CM7, I did a simple reboot and tadaa, problem gone: df shows the same 340 Mb in /data partition as du gave, so missing space is back. Looks like a possible CM7 problem, I will report in CM7 thread...This is a little bit worying though, I fear fs corruption of my internal memory...
