I have successfully made a usb otg cable with info i found on the internet and im going to share this with you guys/gals. Its easy to make all that is needed is an old usb charger and an extra usb data cable similar to the one that came with the phone. i used my old htc cable and old iphone charger, broke them open and got the parts i needed. Unsoldering this is a pain and soldering them back together is too so take your time its a fun project. Sure you can buy one but hey we are the Android Community we are hackers at heart. Below is a small diagram of how things need to be wired and a picture of mine. Good luck and thanks for reading.
I hate to nitpick on such a great post but you failed to mention you need the A style female USB jack. Having said that i'm starting now :victory:, thanks for the fun project. To add to the goodness we could always add an A style jig, which could be made the same way as the micro jig with the other end of the micro cable sacrificed to make this a sweet multi-tool.
EDIT - After re-reading i'm guessing you yanked the female jack from the mutilated charger, my bad.
What's the difference between this and using a real OTG cable?

The gratification of knowing that you built it yourself, thats about it. Less pretty possibly, depending on your definition and/or how much time and effort you spend on aesthetics.
Ambition and the ability to do things like this is great. Getting one from amazon for $0.84 including shipping is good too

Agreed, personally i have all the tools and parts laying around, and due to a broken foot pleanty of free time to spare on a project like this. I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone go out and buy a soldiering gun, soldier, usb cable and/or female USB adapter to mangle just to try this when you could simply buy a pre-fab for next to nothing. Unless, of course, you want to

Hello could anyone please recommend me a long usb charging cable, as the one that comes is too small. I would prefer at least 2 meters please, and am just weary of buying something that could potentially damage my phone, so if anyone has come across something reliable, please let me know.

just buy standard micro usb cable with the length you wish to have. The cable doesn't affect the charging current.
Or just a USB extender...
picked up a few from eBay, $1.49 ea, free shipping...
eBay FTW! Went from having 1 cable with my first Droid to 12+ and spent maybe $10 on them!
Another option besides ebay

I was reading through the threads and saw a few comments from members who said the stock Samsung charger is not that good
This is my first experience with a Samsung Galaxy phone so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good USB Cable
I've already experienced some issues that may be USB Cable related. Some files I transferred through FTP would not complete. It showed up while the phone was charged but when I unplug it the file disappeared (on internal storage)
So if anyone could possibly suggest a good cable, preferably with a link to purchase , I would greatly appreciate it thanks!

I don't think its related to the cable. Its just the crappy windows MTP.

Honestly, the best USB cables I've used were Amazon Basics. They're very well built and inexpensive. One of the cables I ordered didn't quite fit right, and they shipped a replacement, no questions asked.

Whether or not the Samsung cable is sub-par, you are going to want a better charger. You'll want at least a 2 amp charger (Amazon basics has a decent 2.1 amp one).

I used this charger last night on my GS3 with the old cable from my Droid Charge (which appears to be nearly identical). Seems fine. Charge was decently quick, and there wasn't excess heat at the connector or with the device at large.
My only complaint with the included TouchPad cable is that it "hangs" upon removal, whereas the Samsung charging cable feels a lot smoother going into and out of the port.

Not possible, the MHL adapter projects what's on your s3's screen, so your tv shows some nice black when you turn off the screen

Thanks for sharing! Been waiting such a long time for a cheap alternative. This still isn't as cheap as the generic 5pin MHL though...

Yeah, I knew that, I comparing the price to the generic 5pin MHL adaptor which we could use if samsung didn't decide to change to 11pin.
I guess it will never be as cheap since its a niche product for the S3.
This might sound silly but my TV doesn't have a HDMI port (it's pretty old but still slim)
Is there any other type of converters like scart to micro usb (sounds unlikely)

Same here. After doing some research it looks like an unbranded Samsung MHL adapter for the S3. The picture isn't clear enough to get the model number for comparison, but I'm pretty sure after looking at the FCC markings and other things that don't line up with the new S2 MHL adapter. :good:
Ordered it a few mins ago
This one's $20 shipped.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-MHL-T...063258?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f1c05845a
Looking forward to hearing feedback from someone who gets one of these generic adapters.
I spoke with Monoprice's customer service last week and they said they plan on having their own compatible S3 MHL cable before October. I'll probably wait until then as I know theirs will work and should be fairly cheap.
Down to $22 eh? Last I checked the knock-offs were $30, and the samsung official was $40 (now $35).
I'm going to get one of these 11pin mhl-hdmi cables when they finally drop down to $10 like the S2's is, mainly because the 5-to-11 adapter I'm using on my 5pin S2 cable is TOO WIDE for my incipio silicrylic case (and most others) so I have to bend the silicone down. So, fair warning about the adapter for the adapter
Has anybody received one of these from eBay yet? If so, how well does it work?
I've seen a few too many discussions regarding plugging in subpar adapters into these phones that have caused problems. So I may be a bit paranoid but I think I'll stick with official Samsung adapters. Good price though if it works.

I'd like an update if possible if you are able to get it warrantied? I thought once anything was modified that was it? And won't they argue that the crappy micro-B usb failing is the user's fault, rather than the fact it's an unreliable unresiliant usb port? *I miss the mini-b usb*
If its same carrier then of course same device, I don't see why it would be an issue, just nadroid it before you replace it with an older backup.
I went back to an osimood nandroid backup and guess what my charging is working perfectly! Does this make any sense? Guess my phone does not like ICS. No need to send it in under warranty now.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927R using xda app-developers app
I'd keep a close watch on it none the less so as to not begin experiencing the problem again only for it to occur outside of the warranty.
#1 Are you using the real Samsung charger? I've stopped using other chargers in an effort to prevent excessive wear/damage to my ports. They fit the most flush and smoothly it seems in comparison to half a dozen other chargers and usb cables I have used.
#2 Are you sure it wasn't just a bad flash? Did a reflash? did a wipe and then flash? Just curious but I'd give that a shot. Also checksum the ICS image you did use to be sure it wasn't a bad download?

Sorry to threadjack, but every Samsung charger/cable I've ever used has barely held itself in the port, loose and floppy like an old hooker's va-jay-jay. (inb4urmomlol)
Now Nokia, those guys can make a damn microusb cable! plug into the charging port, I can pick up my phone and swing it around by the cable if I wanted. takes just a bit of effort to pull the cable off the port...
And now back to your regularly scheduled banter...

Since you mention it, I can't argue. My nokia ports were pretty rock solid, but I still have my old Nokia USB cable, and while so far all of my samsung ports and cables seem pretty solid/not loose, the nokia fits in (short of making any dirty references :laugh pretty snug and too snug for comfort, which is why I mentioned sticking to the original ones in hopes of less force and wear.
I understand loose but now it works with osimood where it didn't before the same exact cables. Seems that there is something that changes with ICS and charging.

Now... That's why I avoid using Samsung's USB cable, they're too much troubles. I have two of them shorting itself out, so the Wacom Bamboo USB cable gets used instead - no problems. I wonder why Samsung makes the most unreliable USB cable, hmm?

USB cables! my wife and I both have Glides and with in 3 to 4 months both of the usb cables broke! I mean the end that plugs into the phone just disintegrated! I use a usb cable that came from a palm one phone, its twice as long and works wonderfully! although be very careful with the port in the phone! was caught in a light rain, and a single drop happen to hit perfectly on the charging port! that ended the usb functionality! still charged but could not use on a pc. I had already rooted the phone! I called att and they sent me a new one on warranty. I got lucky I guess, all I did was delete all the apps the used root and used root explorer to delete superuser.apk. rebooted the phone and sent it in!
I would say if you need to send it in, just flash the leaked ICS update and that will un-root and also restore a stock recovery. there's also a stock 2.3.5 and the stock recovery floating in the forum here somewhere!
Yup... -___- Mine just shorted out, from positive to negative - at least Samsung's charger itself is fault-proof (didn't let out the magic smoke when that occurred).

OK I've found out that my gnex doesn't charge anymore, sometimes it just says charging but it doesn't charge at all. It's been dead since this morning and I decided that I'll have to replace the USB port since I don't want to deal with that kind of thing by moving and forcing the cable to make contact.
Anyone have successfully replaced the USB port with or without the flex cable? And where did you buy the item. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Wow... That's hardcore surgery. You would be better off buying a Palm Touchstone kit off eBay (currently $8) and getting that working. It's pretty simple for someone who thinks he can replace a USB port, and it's the best charging method conceived so far. I have 8 of them...
Just google Galaxy Nexus Touchstone Mod for detailed tutorial with pics.

My port is fine. The first thing I did when I got my GNex was this mod. I loved my old Palm Pre, so I bought a couple spares and a ton of Touchstones for next to nothing when they went out of business. Eventually, though, I just couldn't live with an abandoned OS any longer... At least I can still use all my Touchstone chargers.
