[Q] Can't figure out this battery pulling thing after CWM download - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Total n00b here so bear with me.
This is for AT&T Galaxy S3 SGH-I747 after OTA update.
I downloaded CWM recovery "cwm6-recovery-n7100-121014.tar" using ODIN "Odin3 v3.07.exe" making sure reboot is deselected. I got the green pass after it got done downloading.
Here is what I did after that
1) Remove battery
Phone still shows the stock bootloader screen at this point.
2) Unplug usb cable
Phone screen goes dark
3) Put battery back in
nothing happens
4) Hold down vol down, power and home button
Sadly it gives me the warning screen about using other bootloaders and when I press the vol up key, it comes up with the default bootloader.
I am totally confused as to what I am doing wrong.
Thanks for any help,
Amish

After I put the battery back on, I press Vol Up+Power+Home Button. I then see a screen with a white samsung logo that appears with tiny blue letters that spell "recovery mode" at the top left corner.
I keep pressing Vol Up+Power+Home Button at this point but the screen just goes black after that. When I release all the buttons, the phone boots back up.
Totally confused.
I am wondering if I have a valid CWM tar file here.

Once you see the screen with the tiny blue letters release the buttons immediately.

My SG3 flies througth that screen so fast its barely detectable, if you are still having trouble getting into the recovery try letting go of the buttons as soon as you feel the vibration when the device powers on. Another trick that helps is to hold the vol up and home buttons BEFORE you press the power button (if you weren't already doing this ), trying to do it simultaneously doesn't always work. You should reach A recovery, whether it be the stock or CWM.

N7100 recovery? That'd be for the wrong phone.

Good catch, I did not realize this. This might be why it's not working. Anybody can point me to a proper CWM file that would work for my device and that I can download using ODIN.
Thanks,
Amish

Sorry about that. When I said n00b I meant it.

Take the one for Samsung galaxy s3 (att)
Next time use search option this has been answered a gazillion times

I searched the xda forum with the following seach field "SGH-I747 CWM tar" but what I am getting is just a confusing arrays of ways and different files that I am not sure work with mine or not.
Also I am totally confused about the ways people are downloading the CWM image. The two ways I found so far are
1) ROM manager which seems to be an app
Files has a .img extension
2) ODIN which seems to be a PC executable
File has a tar extension
Note that this is for a first time install of CWM on the phone. ODIN seems pretty easy to use but I cannot locate a repository for the tar files for my device. I assume some other person is compiling those from the people working on the ROM manager stuff.
Totally confusing...
I'll keep digging. That's half the fun.

Cwm is good but I prefer twrp recovery. Try it.
Here is the link everything is explained about how to install it( 2 ways of doing it)
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/104
I know it can get confusing around here. Just make sure every info you get is in the galaxy S3 i747 thread. And that every file you use is for i747 or d2att( code for our s3) hope this link will clarify things for you

BTW I did not use TWRP simply because most of the help website use CWMRecovery. TWRP is pretty good. I have it running on my kindle fire.
Ok so I finally got it to work. Here are my steps I did:
I have not posted any files or links to them. I don't know how to do it. You can probably search for them.
Note also that these steps can be merged once you are familiar with them.
BTW I also copied some steps directly from some websites <--- Avoid plagiarism here

8) Choose "Go Back"
9) Reboot your phone and your AT&T Galaxy S3 SGH-I747 is now fully rooted and with SuperSU app, which is the Superuser app. It should be located in the app drawer
*****
Prevent system from overwriting CWM
*****
After the OTA update from AT&T/Samsung, the system now overwrites the bootloader with it's own on every reboot. To prevent this two files needs to be modified in the systems folder.
To do this a file explorer will need to be installed such as EX file explorer. Allow it super user access in it's settings
1) copy these two files to your computer and then delete them:
/system/recovery-from-boot.p and /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
2) Perform steps 1 to 8 in section "Install CWM recovery".
3) Reboot your phone
CWM should still be there next time you try recovery
*****
Update to the latest CWM
*****
1) Download ROM manager through the app store
2) Make sure you are connected to wifi
3) Open ROM manager and click "Flash ClockWorkmod Recovery
*****
Installing ROM
*****
>>>> You need to perform steps in "update to the latest CWM Recovery" before continuing <<<<<
1) Download zip file from the web and store on phone's internal sd card
2) Reboot to recovery
3) Choose "install from zip" and locate your zip file
*****
Install google apps if not located in ROM
*****
1) Move "gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip" to phone and install through recovery.
This is what worked for me at the time I wrote this. Hopefully it will help somebody else.

Flash Clockwork Recovery on Samsung Continuum - fix errors

I know there is a thread on this subject but it would not let me post. Anyway I had success with flashing clockwork Recovery on the Continuum but there are a few crucial steps missing in all the forums and YouTube videos that I was able to read or watch. I am new so the will not let me post links. Id you search YouTube for flash clockwork recovery on continuum there are links posted there but I watched the video and that process did not work on my sons phone. I kept getting a signature error until I did the following!
1) Download all the files needed
A. Samsung USB drivers
B. Odin
C. The cwm recovery file .tar
D. The update.zip file (this file needs to be placed on the root of your sdcard.
Follow the processes already posted in the forums to unzip Odin and to install Samsung USB drivers. Now here is the process that was successful for me.
1) Open Odin.
2) Power down the phone and pull the battery.
3) Plug the usb cable into your computer.
4) With the battery out, hold the volume down button and plug the usb cable into the phone. You will now see a yellow triangle. This is in download mode.
5) In the Odin software, click on the PIT button and select the .pit file you have downloaded.
6) Next, click on the PDA button and select the .tar file you downloaded.
7) Next, click on the START button. You will then see the Odin software do its thing and the end result will say PASS.
8) Ok...this step is crucial to your success. At this point you will unplug your usb cable from the phone. Now install your battery. (DO NOT POWER THE PHONE YET. IF YOU DO, REPEAT THE PROCESS ABOVE) Press the volume up and down buttons at the same time and while you are pressing them, press the start button so all three are pressed at the same time. The word SAMSUNG will appear then disappear and when it appears a second time release the volume up and down and power button.
9) You will now see blue writing which is the continuum recovery. Use your volume up and down to scroll to the update.zip line. Once this is highlighted, use your soft menu key on the face of the phone in the bottom left corner to select it. This will open the update.zip
10) After a few seconds you will see RED writing. You are now in clockwork recovery. Now you will use you volume up and down keys to scroll and the POWER button to select the option you want.
11) The first thing you need to do is scroll down to backup and restore and select that with your power button. The select backup, then scroll down and select yes. This will create a backup that can be found on your SD card in the clockwork folder.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks a million, S.V.! Your guide is the only one that brought my Continuum back from the dead.
good …………………………………………
Didn't use yours (just found it) but I did successfully get FROYO working on my Continuum today. It would have been a whole lot easier IF I had found this first...I thought I had a brick in my hand for a while.

What root method did you use?
1. Download Samsung Kies and install it on your computer.
Kies
2. Turn off your phone.
3. While the phone is off, hold down the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons at the same time and plug in your phone via USB cable after you have installed Kies in order to have it install the correct drivers for your device and the device should automatically boot into download mode.
4. Once the drivers are installed and your device can be recognized properly by your computer, make sure to CLOSE KIES completely. If it is running during the next steps, even in the background, it can cause issues.
5. Download Odin and open it.
Odin v1.8.5
6. Download the Recovery file for your specific device and save that to your computer.
T-Mobile Galaxy S II Recovery
Sprint Galaxy S II Recovery
AT&T Galaxy S II Recovery
Galaxy S II i9100 Recovery (Read the developer’s post to decide which file in the third post to download)
7. With the device plugged in and Odin open, click on the PDA button in Odin and select the Recovery file you just downloaded.
8. Select Start and this should flash the recovery to the device and reboot it.
III. Root the Device
1. Once the device reboots, mount the USB storage so we can transfer files to it.
2. Download the Superuser zip file and save it to your computer.
Superuser
3. Copy the Superuser .zip file to the root of your device’s sd card (Not in any folders, just on the sd card itself. Do NOT extract the file, leave it as a .zip)
4. Once it is copied to the device, unplug the device from the computer and turn it off.
5. Turn the device back on by holding down the volume down, volume up button, and the power button. Let go of the power button once the device vibrates but continue to hold the volume buttons until the recovery screen comes up.
6. Once the recovery screen comes up, use the volume buttons to scroll down to install zip from sd and then select the superuser .zip file we downloaded earlier.
7. Once it flashes, select go back, then reboot system now.
8. You should now see the superuser icon in your device’s app drawer. If so, you are all set!

You need download mode for Odin to work. So vol down + power is correct. When using Odin it will only work if the phone is in download mode.

Really, was all that necessary?
Easy way to root:
Download pre rooted odin tar, Here is pre rooted EL29 thread
Put yor phone in download mode, plug phone in, make sure there is a yellow box with com something in it, and click start.
Once phone reboots you are rooted! Go here and select the appropriate option. With EL29, you will select option C then the EL29 kernel with cwm. After reboot you will have root with cwm.
MUCH easier huh?

Lots of great roms for this beauty of a phone, depends what you like though. I personally like the blazer rom which is themed like ICS but based off GB. Blend and TSM are good if you like a lot of customization. Look around and find one good for you, or you can flash to an ICS test build, but because your a noob still I don't recommend it until you're more experienced. I'm currently running BLEND ICS based off FB21 (ICS test build)
Thanks but even then I cant get to download off the site. I dont knowwhy. Both starburst and blazer I cant get tge site work for me
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Try mirrors if you can't get the initial download to work, if it still doesn't work then disable your pop up blocker and possibly anti virus, and if that still doesn't work then perhaps your net speed is too slow. I've downloaded almost every rom on this forum without issue. Keep trying and good luck. Oh and because your a noob, stay away from the ICS leaks for now, until your very familiar with flashing, too many people are bricking good devices because they aren't reading enough.

Samsung Galaxy Victory SPR/VMU/USCC TWRP

Greeting earthlings,
I have ported TWRP to this device. The recovery can be used on ICS and JB devices from all three carriers. Follow these basic instructions:
1. Install Odin and Samsung drivers on you Windows computer which can be found here:
ODIN
DRIVERS
2. Plug in your phone and allow a few minutes for the drivers to install.
3. While you're waiting grab the recovery file here:
TWRP Recovery
4. Now, power off the phone. Once the phone is completely off, press volume down + power and hold them until you see a screen asking you if you want to continue flashing a custom binary. Chose yes by pushing volume up.
5. Start ODIN, ensure "Auto-Reboot" and "Re-Partition" check boxes are CLEAR. Plug your phone into your computer if you have not done that yet. You should see a confirmation in the box on the lower left that says "added" if all things have been done properly to this point.
6. Using the PDA button find and select the recovery file you downloaded in step 3.
7. Click the "START" button and ODIN will flash the recovery to the device.
8. ***IMPORTANT*** If the device reboots by itself you will have to flash the recovery again. There is a script in the kernel that will write the stock recovery back onto the recovery partition. If the device sits there without rebooting follow the next steps exactly as stated.
9. REMOVE THE BATTERY. That's right. Remove the battery then put it back in. Boot into RECOVERY by holding VOLUME-UP+POWER until you see small blue letters in the upper left corner then let go quickly. The device should boot into TWRP recovery. If not, you will have to repeat the process beginning in step 4.
Some people have claimed to do this several times before the recovery stayed on the device. I have had NO problems with getting it done the first try.

[Guide] Root+Overclock SGH-S730M

Hello there. Some of you may know me from my work on other devices. I am Restl3ss. I have come across an SGH-S730M and was painfully disappointed with the support; namely that not only is there not one single custom rom (not even a stock ROM!) but all the root methods to date seem to involve some sort of third party hack-o-tron program instead of rooting the right way (a flashable zip and / or odin file). So, I've thrown together a flashable zip for the samsung galaxy discover SGH-S730M that will both root and overclock the device to 1 ghz. I've also decided to do a comprehensive guide for once, rather than throwing up the files with a figure-it-out type of stance. Without further ranting, here is my noob-friendly root guide for the SGH-S730M.
I am not responsible if anything goes wrong. I don't predict any problems but you never know. Use at your own risk.
Instructions:
Part one is to install a custom recovery. For this guide we will be using CWM. You will need three things to do that. The latest Samsung USB drivers, the CWM.tar.md5 file, and the flashing tool known as Odin. Get the Samsung drivers from here and install. Afterwards, download the Odin.zip from here and the CWM.tar.md5 from here. When the downloads are finished and you have the Samsung USB drivers installed, unzip Odin and run the .exe within.
Now, boot your phone into download mode. To do this, shut off your phone and plug it into your computer. Now hold the volume down, power, and home button simultaneously until the phone vibrates. Once it does, let go of ONLY THE POWER BUTTON. Your phone should now boot into download mode.
Now in odin, click the button that says PDA. a file selection prompt will appear. Locate the .tar.md5 file you downloaded earlier. Once you have, wait for odin to verify, and then click Start. Odin will now flash on a custom recovery, and your phone will reboot normally once the process is complete.
Part two is to flash the actual rooting zip. To do this, first download the zip found here. Then, copy it to your phones storage. once you have done this, shut off the phone. Restart the phone into recovery mode. To do this, (with the phone shut off) hold the power button and volume up button until the phone vibrates, then let go of ONLY THE POWER BUTTON. Your phone should boot into clockwork mod recovery. You can navigate this recovery by using the volume up and down buttons to move up and down in the menu, and the power button to make a selection. In clockworkmod recovery, select "install". Find the root zip you downloaded earlier and select it. Clockworkmod will ask you if you're sure you want to flash, select yes. After the flashing is finished, select reboot device. Your phone will boot up like normal and upon boot you will get an "android is upgrading" message. Wait for that to finish, and then use your phone as normal Congratulations, you are now rooted and overclocked.

Unable to root S3

So I was trying to root my gf's she today and tried to flash twrp using Odin and kept failing. I then went to recovery to just wipe the cache and noticed something I've never seen before. On the bottom of the recovery screen out mention something about manual mode and multi csc from at&t. Is this the reason why I'm not able to root? And of so what is the steps needed to take in order to be able to root it and possibly install a custom ROM?
Thank ya!

The things you read on the screen will not prevent rooting the phone.
What version of twrp and Odin are you using? Is the the phone providing error messages during the flash?
It depends on the version of Android you're running as 4.4+ has a few additional steps beyond the normal guides.
Generally the steps are:
1) Install Samsung drivers
2) Hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together until you see a warning screen
3) Open Odin but uncheck reboot, install TWRP
4) After Success, remove battery and unplug usb
5) Hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power button together
6) Go to Advanced File Mangaer and Mount System Partition
7) Go to File Manager and delete:
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
8) Install SuperSU
If you don't find those files in the File Manager then don't worry about it. Most of the steps I got from: http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s3-on-android-4-34-4-2-new/ which is a great guide but kind of skips deleting those problematic files (as they will essentially on reset put you back to the native recovery).

That's the tutorial I used. And I've done this to several Samsung devices but without the problem of not being able to flash the .tar at all.... Just keeps saying failed. Could I possibly do cf auto root and then flash the recovery from flashify or twrp app?

Maybe try a different version of Odin? Is the Com turning yellow?
I had run into a problem where I one version worked and another didn't.
as suggested, try Odin 3.07 and maybe philz touch instead of twrp.
