Ok I will be going to a place where no company gets signal, meaning I can't roam, but I will still have Wifi so I'm wondering what, if I can, do i have to do in order to get Wifi texting? I will and am running CM10 M2.
Thanks

Best thing I would do is use a free text service like text free since it uses data only.

Use Google voice with your current number. You should be able to text. But no mms

Any special way I have to set that up?

Nothing special just select to use your current number. I would sign up using a pc though. Far more options and easier to navigate. And then download the app and sign in with your login. G voice is an great service I don't know why more people don't use it

That one costs $2.99/month for the service. The regular Zipwhip app works, and it's free to use.

Personally I would just use google voice. Just download > link it to your sprint number > done. Only thing is google voice can't receive mms messages, like pictures / video. But you can still text and get voice mail, and no additional cost.

You actually can receive mms messages. You just have to set up Google Voice to where you want to receive messages with your email as well.
If someone says they sent you a picture and you don't see it using Google Voice, just check your gmail. and go through the conversation and you should see an attachment.

Try Heywire from the market.
If you are needing to send messages via WiFi to someone else with either a smart phone or computer you might both try using Google Talk or other instant messaging app.

I use Textfree. Its free, uses wifi and they even give you real phone number that your friends can save and text you when they need to. Works great for me

So I tried to see what google voice does exactly and I seen its not necessary for me so I uninstalled it but noticed that its settings are still on. So I reinstalled it and went in the settings and signed out which was supposed to take it off completely but its still there. When I get a phone call and answer I always have to press "1" to answer. And I get txts and e mails of my voice mails which I don't like. How can I get rid of this completelyyy?

this is normal.. you have to login to GV in a web browser and change the settings.

Got mine working... I kept trying to use the password for my account... then I was trying to use my passcode... then I remembered my voicemail password from 5 years ago was completely different...
Had same problem. Worked for me when I disabled wifi and set up att visual voice mail using my cellular data connection. Try cleaning app data in app manager and open att visual app using only cellular connection. Should work then.

Also, if you use the stock AT&T Messages app it integrates visual voicemail but you loose the ability to save voicemails as .amr audio files.
Instead you have to go to https://messages.att.net/ to save your voicemails as audio files.
Using the website is like Google Voice so you can see all your voicemails including text and incoming/outgoing call logs.
Thanks for this post. I didn't even know visual voicemail was supported!
I wasnt talking about att messages app- just to be clear it is visual voicemail app in play store that att crap sucks

I don't see any options in AT&T Visual Voice that allows you to same messages as .amr files.

It uses the default messaging interface as oppose to the Google voice interface, which is horrible. I like this app so far. Its helpful because I don't have a text messaging plan and only use Google voice for messaging.

Like the Idea, but not sure I trust an App that can monitor messages sent to/from my phone, and also can request authentication tokens from my google account... Or an App developed by someone that can not even provide a valid Developers website link.
Not a fan of 3rd party apps that require access to this type of information.
And if you Google the Developer "DreamBig, Inc" it's all about College related stuff...
It's been working as well as expected for me. Not too worried about privacy concerns. It uses Google services to access Voice and not your username and password. But thank goodness for the paranoid/careful.

yeah, but this isn't too important for me. The risk/reward factor is too high for me, for an unknown company to access my Google account, to do nothing really new for me. besides, I have unlimited texts.

Was using Youmail until recently when I had an issue with the app continually trying to sync and wouldn't delete properly.
Went to Google Voice and like it a bit more. Lost the cool factor of the different types of voicemail announcements, but it integrates with your dialer app so my voicemail shows up under call history. Kind of cool to have that. No need to open a second app to get voicemail.

I use Hullomail. You can also set individual voicemail messages for each contact. I rather like it and the less tech savvy amongst friends and family are amazed they get a personalised message when they end up going through to voicemail.
It will also alert you to missed calls that you may have had when you had no signal.
