Hey everyone I'm thinking of getting the LG Optimus G when it releases but the reason I'm not 100% sure yet due to their lack of updates.
So I was wondering how good is the developer community at rooting, creating ROMs, etc for past LG devices? Does LG give enough documentation to help developers or have developers been doing a pretty decent job in general?
I know this is a vague question, was just hoping someone with past LG experiences could shed some light. Thanks.

Based on how they treated my g2x... I wouldnt buy any phone by them ever again.
And even though they got a nexus line coming out at the end of the month... Im just gonna wait for one of the other 4 before I bite. LG can bite me.
If its like the 4xhd bad, 4xhd had locked boot loader and has never been unlocked
So if you want a device for development this will probably be a no go.

How big was the development community for the 4xhd?
I know there have been a number of "challenging" bootloaders that have been defeated.
In the off chance the Optimus G is a big enough hit, there is a good chance locked bootloaders will be overcome.
This seems like it will be a popular device, so a lot of dev support. If I get one in December I will do some custom romsfor the phone.

4xhd doesn't have one rom, its rooted and has cwm but no kernels or roms. Its sad really hopefully this isn't like it or it'll be a bummer
I'm hoping for some good news on the bootloader and rooting for this phone.
I'm going to wait a while and see what happens before I upgrade. If it's locked up tight, I'll be disappointed, and buy something else.
If CWM and CM10 are "quickly" in the works...
Hmm... The Korean model has been rooted. I'm crossing my fingers.
I already pre ordered mine with sprint. I'm hoping to run aosp asap
I have my fingers crossed as well.
I think the LG Optimus G has the specs and pricing to warrant a big community, although I do have to say that LG could have made more hype about it. With the SGs3 and the HOX, people are extremely interested in it, even though the US versions bring very little new to the table. Developers flocked to the devices and now you've got a humongous community.
Also, I think this is a flagship phone for the US, until the HOX+ and the new nexus devices are released, and even then it'll still be a great contender (to the HOX+ at least, not sure what the new Nexus' will bring). It's got a lot of things going it's way for a large community...
Maybe contact LG Mobile to make it unlockable for the phone to sell more and become developer friendly...

I have feeling that the LG Optimus G will be plagued with a locked bootloader. Part of LG's strategies. "If you want a more dev friendly phone, then buy our new LG Nexus 4!"

I don't think I would consider that very good, the One X+ or the GS3 are much better options to be honest. The Note 2 would be the best, but it also looks like the new nexus is coming as well.
Personally I would go with a one X or GS3 and save some cash.
Cyanogen mod doesn't support htc devices so I wouldn't go there.
*if* the optimus g gets unlocked bootloaders then we may see amazing dev support.

That has happened partially for the Exynos Galaxy S III devices. They have broken source code for the HW acceleration driver, so codeworkx and entropy512 may abandon it.

So, I was all excited to get a Note 2, but then I heard about CyanogenMod being unlikely to support new Exynos devices: http://codeworkx.de/wordpress/
So with that in mind... does anyone have a competing phablet to suggest?

You do know that codeworkx isn't the only developer for CyanogenMod or for Samsung devices. Him dropping support for Exynos devices isn't the end of the world. So what if he left, that's his personal choice & I understand why & completely support him but not everyone shares his views of dropping support for Exynos devices because devices like the S & Note series are very popular & its just a matter of time before some developer get his hand on the device & CyanogenMod will be developed for it. This is just needless panic.

And yes #illidan, I realise that another developer may step up, and I do hope that happens. But from the sounds of things, it's not just codeworkx that is dropping Samsung support:
Entropy512 said:
Not likely to happen. If CM comes to the Note 2, it will only be if a new maintainer steps up.
Most of the current Exynos maintainer team (myself, espenfjo, codeworkx) and others have all decided that our current devices will be our last non-Nexus Exynos devices. I'm not sure about xplodwild, but I have a feeling he's highly unlikely to take up another Haxxinos with the rest of us gone and given his prior experiences with it.
If Samsung changes their attitude towards developers, this might change, but their attitude lately (zero documentation, zero platform source code, a trend towards bootloader locking - Only the Verizon S3 has a locked bootloader now, but Samsung has had the infrastructure in place since the S2 and they are constantly adding more checks) has led to the current Exynos maintainer team deciding that enough is enough. I don't think any of us are going to do anything to make Samsung's Exynos devices more attractive to any particular market segment until they provide assistance (in the form of technical documentation and source code) in return. I don't know about the others, but if they offer me a free device I'll say no - I refuse to participate in a PR stunt like the I9100 donations were.
Pretty much the only way I'll go back is if I see reference platform source that is up to the same standards as CAF and omapzoom, or they actually start providing real documentation and source code for the devices I'm currently working with.

Yes I'm well aware of the entire so called Exynos development team giving up because of Samsung's retarded ways but as of now I believe it's a 50-50 gamble for device support. Maybe a new maintainer steps up to the batting plate or an old one does (highly unlikely). It's basically up to you & seeing as the Note is the only choice for now if your looking for a phablet. I still believe that the device will receive support.

A popular device like the Note II will surely get CM. But a point worth considering is the lack of help being provided by Samsung regarding the Exynos processor. So, in the future , development may slow down or there may be loss of particular functionality due to the lack of code or compatible blobs from Samsung for the Exynos.
Of course, there are many talented devs that gonna work on the Note II, but the Team Hacksung not supporting this is definitely a big blow, as they have shown the awesome work they can do with Samsung devices as well as the fact that they have tremendous experience on Samsung devices.
Hrm, this may not be concerning for the veteran android user, but as I plan(ned?) this to be my first android device, it makes me wonder if I should wait and see if there is support for it. I can't a stock anything, let a lone a phone. And unfortunatly this is the only android device I'm really looking forward to.
I've heard some chit chatter as well, as far as development / support not going to be strong but its not going to sway me from buying this phone.. It's still going to be awesome.. Even if its just stock rooted to get rid of system things you don't need

We all know now about the up and coming Nexus 5, which LG is again the manufacturer. It will be launch (according to rumor) with the latest Android version 4.4 or was it 5(?) called KitKat.
The G2 is very much here. 4.2 out-of-the-box with all it's niceties.
Now we, GPro user/owner probably wondering what LG's instore for our neglected capable device. We're still on 4.1 and should be on 4.2 by now. And one could even ask if we could still see the light with 4.3, much more with KitKat.
Will a petition be of any help from GPro user to send LG a clear voice demanding support from them? Will they listen thinking that we're just small in number?
The GPro was my first LG (smart)phone and really have no idea how they are with support. Was LG notoriously sucks with updates?

Don't get your hopes too high, mate. They're making some really good phones, but unfortunately, they've chosen to stick to their "no update" policy. They've abandoned the Optimus G, just like they've abandoned other flagships before. The same's the case with the G Pro. As it's going to be with the G2, too. I've been really tempted by the G Pro (LG, in my opinion, have the best displays of the lot), but seeing their poor record of updates, it makes me think twice.

You didn't do too much research if you have to ask that. Combine LG's propensity to not release updates with AT&T's 6 month vetting process after its released and you can pretty much expect that nothing north of 4.2.2 will ever hit the G Pro. I'd assume once the G2 is out for 60 days there will be a 4.2.2 International G Pro update then maybe 90 days to 6 months later an AT&T update. By then no one will care and the device will have already been EOL'ed.
If you want a newer Android version on a non Nexus phone you're going to have to flash them with a ROM. Its a sad state of affairs for the Android eco-system but at least there's an upgrade path of some sort, even if its manual.
from what I know, LG has always been very very slow with update.
Better sit and wait for it. I don't think we will be forgotten.

One of my favorite books ever is Harry Browne's How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World. In it, he talks about "direct actions" and "indirect actions." Direct actions involve doing something to get what you want. Indirect actions involve trying to change someone else's mind so they'll give you what you want. Direct actions are usually quicker, easier and more reliable.
This proposed petition is a perfect example of the difference. We can either spend a lot of time and effort putting together a petition hoping to change LG's mind in a month or two, or we can just root and flash on our own and have the newest OS (4.3) today.
5 cents, please.

The only LG phone I seen with plenty of development wast the LG Nexus 4 and LG Nexus 5 and those werent really full LG projects.
The phones with the most development are usually the HTC / Samsung / Nexus devices.
I knew that when I purchased the G3 but this phone is now going to my phone and il be on Note 4.
The best thing to hit this G3 was Auto Prime HotSpot Tethering hack. Something I hope comes to the Note 4.
I like trying new roms but I'm so happy with this phone that I'm content with Zone, tweaksbox, and xposed.
I love the functions out of the box... Plus 32gb, awesomeness. I'll most likely pick up the g4 as my next phone. Nexus 6 looks tempting but that would be just to play with and use every now and then. I'm almost positive that the camera app won't be nearly as good as the G3.
