Use CF-root, clean and simple solution, and after it you can flash it via mobile odin.

No need to go via Cf root, directly flash chenglu's recovery it will give root + CWM

Flashing Recovery Problem!

RESOLVED SEE POST #6
Hey guys,
I am having trouble flashing a custom recovery (TWRP) to be specific on my brothers Note 2. I was able to easily do it with my phone but I didnt update OTA to the latest ATT software.
I have the latest samsung drivers installed too.
So in general.
1. My brother updated OTA
2. I use odin to try to flash TWRP via PDA
3. It says success but when I reboot into recovery it goes into the stock android recovery instead of the custom one
4. ??? perplexed
is your [brothers] phone rooted? (you didn't mention that in the post). if it is, the easiest way to install TWRP is to download GooManager from the Play Store and, once installed, choose Menu->Install OpenRecoveryScript.

He is not rooted. He is stock from AT&T but he said he did an OTA update a week or two ago.
I actually tried the GooManager to install TWRP but it said it installed twrp but it goes into stock android recovery
I'm not sure if this helps or not but when I load into stock android recovery it keeps "manually loading CSC"

so i take it [your] phone is rooted, because you have a custom recovery installed. my understanding is that the device must be rooted before you can install a custom recovery. that's why installing TWRP via GooManager didn't work.

what about ODIN doesn't it root the phone when you flash a custom recovery?
on my phone all I had to do was flash via twrp via odin and it did everything for me...
this isn't the case for my brother's phone so im a little confused

ODIN doesn't root your phone. it's the package/file that you flash with ODIN that roots your device. you didn't mention the method you used to root your phone.

flash what via TWRP? you need to reference the methods you used to flash your device, e.g., link to post. it's difficult to help without having more info. in my case i used the CF Root method which does root your phone by using ODIN to flash a package that installs SuperSU binary and APK (app that provides root) and a Stock recovery. This took less than 30 seconds. afterwards, i added my GMail account to my device, installed GooManager from the PlayStore and then used GooManager to install TWRP. hope this is helpful.

I see. Sorry for not being specific
When I worked on my phone. I installed the latest samsung drivers on the main website, used Odin 3.07, flashed TWRP 2.3 by PDA, and it was rooted and the custom recovery worked awesome (I did it similar to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFHZ535L7is)
However this process does not work with my brothers note 2. Which is why im confused.... I assuming TWRP auto rooted for my phone but it didn't for my brother's phone?
I will definitely give your method a try and post back. Thanks for putting up with a newbie like me!

no worries... i'd hate to see you fubar your brothers phone, lol. anyway, the method used in that video appears to be created by ChainFire for the N7100, which is the international version of the Note 2. the method i referenced - also developed by ChainFire - is specific to the AT&T and Canadian versions of the Note 2. if there's one thing I've learned in my years on xda, it's to make sure that you play with stuff that's compatible with your device. several of today's devices go by the same consumer friendly name (e.g.,Galaxy S 3, Note 2) but have different internals (e.g., chips). if you flash an incompatible ROM, you could end up with a nice paperweight. hope you and your brother enjoy your phones.

[Q] Device saying it is rooted but cannot flash ROM's

I rooted my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 & when I go to recovery mode to try to install a ROM from SD there is no option to do so on the external or internal yet my phone says it is rooted.
I have rooted & installed custom ROM's on other android phones with no issues but this phone seems to not be as easy to root and install a custom rom :/
anybody ever heard of this ?
did you flash a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP?

If in recovery you see a big green android you are in stock recovery. Won't be able to do much there

I flashed CWM
it is in CWM recovery mode so thats another reason why I am so confused
Try twrp. Just dl goo manager, it will install it for you.
I will try it, I really want a custom ROM, I loved them on my other device. I don't get why it seems so much more difficult on the S3

what did you use to flash cwm? if it was a successful and correct flash, then there should be no issue.

its not difficult at all. i'm not bashing you, per se, just letting you know that if you have done what a million other S3 users have then it should be working just fine.

i didnt ask how you rooted. i believe you when you say you are. i asked how you flashed cwm. if all you have done is root, then you need to install a custom recovery to begin flashing ROMs.

you need to go back and look over the OP of the root method you used. no custom recovery is installed. it specifically states that. please read again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963790

[Q] Root and Unroot Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4.3

Hello guys,
As I successfully updated my phone to 4.3 using Toolkit, but I got one problem. My phone is rooted , so I have SuperSU on it. When I start the program it says that I need to re-root my phone again, so as to install some updates and it does not allow me to work with it.
So my problem is that when i rooted my phone i used Samsung Galaxy Toolkit 11.1.0 and I had no problems. But now, there is no option where I can find my phone`s version (4.3), which leads me to the fact that I can not change anything for this time..
I will be really glad if someone explain me some other way to root and unroot my phone.
Thanks.
Don't use the damn toolkit and you wouldn't have an issue. Its just a zip file you flash in the custom recovery you now have.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
find a nice pre-rooted 4.3 rom and flash that. I've been using Lovejoy 777's 4.3 and it works well, root sticks

yes, but when I went to the custom recovery trough the bootloader , one android appeared with red stomach and a exclamation mark... It seems that the root has disappeared and also the Custom Recovery with it..
Yeah. Flashing the entire package of 4.3 replaces recovery and root is lost with the /system replacement because root is located in /system.
Flash custom recovery again and then flash supersu.zip. done

Is the '[GT-N51xx] CF-Auto-Root' the best rooting method?

Hi guys
I'm toying with the idea of rooting my Note 8.0. I've had a look around this part of the forum and the only rooting method that looks relatively safe and problem-free is the '[GT-N51xx] CF-Auto-Root' method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2291839) put together by Chainfire.
Can someone who has a good idea on rooting the Note 8.0 confirm this is the best way? I'd be very grateful before I went ahead with the process
yes. It's very easy..takes 30 seconds. You can start with cf auto root and install a custom recovery later (also very easy) if you'd like

If you root by using CF-Auto-Root, it will just add two things:
1. SU binary to the system
2. SuperSU apk
This is the best way, if you want to root while staying as stock as possible. Keep in mind, rooting will increase the counter, and you need Triangle Away to reset it for a warranty claim.
Alternatively, if you want a custom recovery + root, you can flash PhilZ Touch 5 Recovery by civato. After flashing go to the recovery and power off via it's menu, at this point the recovery will ask you to confirm injecting the SU binary. After that you can boot to the system and install SuperSU from Google Play.
Can I use this method to install custom roms to SG4 M919 TMOBILE
I recently used this method on SGH-M919 Android Version:4.4.2...now I want to install custom roms? Is this possible? If so can someone guide me...I am noob! Thanks in advanced!

As far as it goes I think after rooting it with CFroot you should update the SuperSU from the Playstore.

Hello, I was trying to update my note 2 with DN3 kitkat rom today.. But didn't work! :/
I rooted the phone. I got correct root access.
Then followed the instruction to flash the ROM.
After reboot, I could hear the welcome sound(new) and saw the samsung animated logo..then it stuck there. I waited for some 15mins, but nothing happened, only the animated samsung logo.
I saw an issue in TWRP.. saying there was a problem with permission. I don't know what was it. I tried to fix permission, but it failed.
After nothing worked, now I am in the process of recovery from kies.
Perhaps I didn't have the right step by step guide; from rooting the phone to flashing it. :/
If someone could please help, would be great!.. I really want to flash my phone for the DN3 custom rom.
Thanks.
Why do you need to root when flashing custom rom? It is already prerooted. You only need recovery.

As per rooting instruction, it is mentioned that the device must be rooted before flashing a custom rom from stock rom.
While installing the recovery the device is rooted or another way that I tried was to root by CFroot first, which was successfully done then I got the super user access to install a recovery like TWRP,,

Try to flash philz advance recovery(md5.tar) through odin & then flash su.zip from recovery.
Done.
