[Q] Media Scan Issue - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear all,
I do have a problem of media scan of GSN2 and I wonder if any friends here are facing the same problem as mine.
The issue is that, in order to restore my existing photos and music from my old phone to SGN2, I used my PC to transfer the photos and music to my 32GB sdcard ("Extsdcard" which was working fine with my SGS2 and SGS3 under ICS OS) and then I insert my SD card into my SGN2. I find that pre-existing media files (pictures, music and videos) in the Extsdcard were not added to the stock gallery/music/video player app. I tried to reboot my SGN2 and/or install the Rescan Media Root app to trigger the media scanner to work. However, no pre-existing photos/music/videos in Extsdcard showed up in my stock gallery/music/video player.
Also, I have tried some kind of suggested solution such as hard reset, full wipe, delete .nomedia, reformat the Extsdcard from FAT32 to exFAT etc and the issue could not be solved.
The only way which is worked for me is, firstly copy my photos/music/videos from my Extsdcard to my internal storage, then, delete the files in my Extsdcard, then, re-copy the files from my internal storage to my Extsdcard. Then the photos/music/videos were properly showed up in the stock gallery/music/videos player again.
Any friends in this forum is facing the same issue with your SGN2 as me? Do you know if there is any way to make my media scanner to scan my Extsdcard properly and find all the photos, videos and music?
Thank you very much!

Did you try clearing cache and data for gallery app in settings. Not sure how to on jellybean, but try unmounting and then remounting the sd card. Didn't se where you had tried this or not
from a galaxy far far away....

Dear Max,
Thanks a lot for your response. Both of your suggested methods had been tried but the gallery app won't see my existing photos in my Extsdcard after cleaning the data / cache. I could only get to see my pre-existing photos in the stock gallery until copying the photos from Extsdcard to internal storage, and then re copy the photos from my internal storage to my Extsdcard. Thanks again for your suggestions.

Had that on the S3, just download Startupmanager from Play and rescan media. Open Startupmanager and go to system and disable Mediastorage. Open en and close Mediascan and you`re done. Choose Rescan Media for root or it will not work.

Dear all
I think I have figure out what happen in my Extsdcard. I guess there were some photos from other non stock camera apps had been corrupted which led to the media scan hanged at some point and not able to scan my whole Extsdcard.
Thx so much for advising me.

Apps not able to find external sd

I am using 64 GB external card. I have a large collection of mp3 songs in it. None of the music player can find the songs. I have tried the stock player, player pro and few others.
Mx video is able to find the video collection on the external card.

are none of the folders hidden?
folders in linux(and android) are hidden when their name starts with a period (ex: ".foldername") and in android folders (and any file/folder within that folder) are hidden from stock applications if they contain a file called .nomedia
and do the files show up over USB(MTP)?
The internal SD card is now merged with the internal memory, that's why App 2 SD is not possible on the SGN2.
I don't know if someone has found a fix around this.

Rebooting the phone should cause a media scan which will then pick up all the songs, provided you don't have a .nomedia file in any of the directories, which causes the scanner to stop.
You can also download apps to force a media rescan, but that shouldn't be necessary.

Tried everything but no music player has been able to find my music collection in External SD. Even office applications are unable to find the SD card. Any possible fix or solution for this?

Try Meridian player.
It has a 'folder' option which lets you manually navigate to any folder.
Perhaps it's the file system of your external card.
Try formatting the card in the phone, and then copying your music back onto it.
My phone has no problems finding all the mp3s on my sd card.

If you're rooted, then you can use a tool like Directory Bind to map folders between your phone and card storage. I use it on my S3 and my Note 2 to keep apps like Amazon MP3 from filling up my phone storage.

Formatting the card worked. "Silly Me". Sometimes simple of steps just throws you off. Thanks again everyone.
SOLVED!!!!!!
FINALLY, THE SOLUTION!
I scoured all over internet trying to solve the issue of any media player finding music from neither SD Card (internal nor external), even though file explorers did, so I will be posting this on every relevant thread I find.
This method worked for me, so results may vary:
1- Download Rescan Media (I used the root version):
2- Download Media scanner:
3- Go to Settings / Applications / All / Media Storage and clear data
4- Reboot
5- Open Rescan media and disable the media scanner
6- Now re-enable it
7- Now, open Media scanner and tap Start scanning
8- Voilá, now every player will recognize the music stored on both SD Cards.
*As I said, this method worked for me, so maybe just some of the steps above were necessary, but... anyway.
Good luck!

[Q] JB Roms - No access non-system ringtones and music on SD card

I have flashed several JB Roms on my Dinc. Namely, Albinoman's RC 3, Pons AOKP and Pons CM10. All are great roms. On Albinoman' I can access music and ringtones on the SD card. However, for the other JB roms, I can not access ringtones or music on the SD Card or emmc.
Couple of things:
1) The roms were all installed with clean wipes. Format boot, system, factory reset, etc.
2) The SD card has pictures and documents that are readable by other programs and load no problem,
3) The SD card music files and ringtones appear in my file browser (File Expert), and if i click on I can play each singularly in FileExpert
4) I tried several different music players and they do not read or recognize the music on SD card. They see/report "Zero" songs.. Even FileExpert reports no songs (weird ehh?).
5) In the system/sound settings, the only sounds that appear are system sounds and ringtones.
6) I tried fixing permisions
7) I also tried copying "ringtones" to a folder of the same name on the emmc. Ditto for some music.
8) I do have sound, using the notifications and ringtones that came with the rom. So I got that going for me.
So at this point I ask for some assistance. But as I am not totally soundless, I can survive. Thanks!
Running CM10, I have no idea, as I only use ringtones from the SD card, same for playing music, and I have no issues here.
You don't have a .nomedia file in sdcard or emmc do you?

I believe I may swap and reformat SD cards to see if that will help. I am currently using a 32 GB class 4 micro SD

These files tell the system to not scan those directories and sub-directories, so if they're on the root of the sdcard or anywhere you want the music to be scanned, then yes.

You beat me to it!
Most likely it was caused due to a buggy version of ROM manager if the OP was using it. I think I'll use some .nomedia files to limit the scanning to just my music and camera/screenshot folders. I've never used them but it may help cut battery usage due to scanning.
Zimeron & Tiny: Thank you! Unfortunately it worked only temporarily. So I suspect something is up with my uSD card, although using various tools nothing was listed wrong. I swapped the 32 GB Class 4 card for a 8 GB card Class 4 card, copied files over, and I am up and running with Ringtones and Music through several reboots, tests and trials. When I get the space (and time) I will copy the content on the 32 GB card, wipe, format and refill. If it still does not work then perhaps there is some uSD size limit with the ROM, or I just need a new 32 GB uSD card. Thanks again for all your time.
For those who have the ".nomedia" file issue:
1) Mount the SD card on a PC (this can be done several ways: USB adapter, or cable rigt to phone with USB drive enabled)
2) Open Explorer on the PC to view the drive (if it does not pop up automatically)
3) In the Explorer search bar type: .nomedia
4) Hit enter then click on: Search in Subfolders
5) Select and delete the .nomedia files found in media folders with music and ringtones
6) Repeat the above for the EMMC.
Enjoy your music!
Cyanlou, try removing sdcard, clearing media storage, and adding the 32gb sdcard.

Didn't do the trick. Now that I know the problem and what to search on, I am finding the issue across devices on JB Roms. Interesting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880163
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1969205 (I found non xda links as well, but did not include here)
ROM manager is being pointed to as the source at several sites. I do not NOW use ROM manager, but their may be lingering files. Really? That is almost like a vi... a vir... I can't spit it out and wont. In the forums I see talk of wiping this and that, which brings me back to trying a newly formatted SD card, a totally clean wipe, and Rom install. Or seeing how future nightly's may change the handling of media.
Perhaps this belongs in a development forum as a JB issue?
Tiny:
Your patch here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1882918&page=81 to Pons' CM10 Kang totally fixed the issue!! I see all ringtones and media files on the SD card. Checking in Titanium backup prior and after flashing the ROM I found
Prior: System ROM: 260 MB (12.1 MB Free)
After: System ROM: 260 MB (64.4 MB Free)
So the lack of system space may not have enabled seeing all the media files in some way or another? Pons was always saying how tough it was to squeeze JB into the Inc. When he gets back, he should be thrilled with this. I know I am. Thanks again. Issue solved! :good:

losing access to external SD card

Ever since I rooted my note 2, I keep losing access to the external SD card. Trying to access through file managers or apps (music or video player) results in freezing/hanging. If I unmount then mount, I will briefly have access and it will play files as normal. After I watch a movie, I will not be able to open another file. I have to unmount and mount again.
I've tried just about everything I can think of. still need to reformat the card. Any other ideas?
Can you see files on your ext sd with a file mgr? If you are only having issues with media players finding music or videos, there are a number of free "rescan" apps in market. This just happened to me (i.e., alarm clock xtreme and stock music player couldn't find my mp3 files on ext sd)... Only took 30 sec to resolve by running "Rescan SD" app... now all my apps can find my media files stored on ext sd... something to try at least...

I'll try that. But the problem is with all apps including file managers.
I have the same problem. Everything worked fine for a month after root. Today i plugged in using a 3rd party charger and now the card wont mount or stay mounted. Ive used other 3rd party charges without problem. Could thisbe the problem?

[Q] SD card issues.

I know with the introduction of kitkat or its recent iterations of 4.4.2 and so on, that there were some preventative measures taken to stop them from being written to. The question i pose is i have tried adding music to my sdcard i from my computer. The odd thing is that the sdcard will read as if it has something written to it but, in ES explorer my music folders are empty. I have looked around and nothing has been found. Other than the sdcard write fix which ARHD supposedly has according to the app i tried. The music app is use it Poweramp it will read the files but cant play them while HTC's music player will play them but only the first few seconds.
So am i stuck mainly using my sdcard mainly for pictures or is there away to get it to work pre kitkat. Also note i have tried putting the music on the onboard storage than move it to the sdcard and that was also a no-go

I'm unrooted stock rom and have copied music from pc to sd card with no problems. What folder is it you're moving the music to? I have a folder called music that I created and move any downloaded music into it. I can play it through the stock music without any problem. Possibly a corrupt folder or sd card? Have you tried removing files you want to keep, formatting then copying back your files?

I created a folder called Music same as the one on the onboard storage. It may be the sdcard not being recognized properly and files not being transferred correctly as well. The music on my desktop plays fine no skipping whatsoever. Its just once it hits the sdcard does it seem to go astray. Maybe a new rom is in order and staying away from ART.

Hi,
regarding what you said about being able to copy your music files onto the sd - are you also able to write into a file (let's say word doc)on your sd from your (presumably) windows-pc?
Thanks

If you have a USB card reader, try re-formatting the card on your computer.
I've seen several folks with various quirky and random read issues, and a simple re-format cleared it up, when the phone's own format feature didn't help. Also a common symptom, the SD card works fine on other devices.
Folks keep accusing the KitKat SD permission changes. But those changes only apply to write permissions, not read permissions. My gut feeling, its some quirk with the phone itself and something to do with SD formatting.

Reformatted from the phone. can not do it from my laptop because it says it is write protected. have not got a program to get around that yet. as for creating word doc, have not tried it. going to put it in wife's S5 and see if it likes it better and see if her card likes my phone any better . as for the card itself it is a Sandisk ultra class 10 32gig.

[Q] Photos not deleting off of SD Card

HI all,
I've come across a strange issue where when I save my photos to the SD card, and I delete them off the phone using either the Gallery app or Google photos (using the delete everywhere option) the photos get removed from the gallery/google photos, but the files still exist on the SD Card. Note that I am empting the trash in google photos when I delete it too. When I browse the storage on the phone, the pictures are still there! So when I reboot the phone, the pictures come back to Google Photos and also the gallery. This does not happen when I save them to the internal storage. What is also strange is when I browse the SD Card camera directory via Windows Explorer, the photos do not appear either. Its only through the file explorer on the phone (show hidden files is enabled). I have a samsung 32 GB HDXC SD Card installed. I've also reformatted the card multiple times. Is anyone having this same issue?
Chris
It's normal in KK 4.4.2
Have a look:
http://www.androidcentral.com/kitkat-sdcard-changes
Interesting. I just switch back to Android so I'm not up to date on all the changes.
I would think the stock gallery/camera app would have ownership of the SDCard/DCIM/Camera directory. Is there a workaround without rooting the phone?
