I know with the introduction of kitkat or its recent iterations of 4.4.2 and so on, that there were some preventative measures taken to stop them from being written to. The question i pose is i have tried adding music to my sdcard i from my computer. The odd thing is that the sdcard will read as if it has something written to it but, in ES explorer my music folders are empty. I have looked around and nothing has been found. Other than the sdcard write fix which ARHD supposedly has according to the app i tried. The music app is use it Poweramp it will read the files but cant play them while HTC's music player will play them but only the first few seconds.
So am i stuck mainly using my sdcard mainly for pictures or is there away to get it to work pre kitkat. Also note i have tried putting the music on the onboard storage than move it to the sdcard and that was also a no-go

I'm unrooted stock rom and have copied music from pc to sd card with no problems. What folder is it you're moving the music to? I have a folder called music that I created and move any downloaded music into it. I can play it through the stock music without any problem. Possibly a corrupt folder or sd card? Have you tried removing files you want to keep, formatting then copying back your files?

I created a folder called Music same as the one on the onboard storage. It may be the sdcard not being recognized properly and files not being transferred correctly as well. The music on my desktop plays fine no skipping whatsoever. Its just once it hits the sdcard does it seem to go astray. Maybe a new rom is in order and staying away from ART.

Hi,
regarding what you said about being able to copy your music files onto the sd - are you also able to write into a file (let's say word doc)on your sd from your (presumably) windows-pc?
Thanks

If you have a USB card reader, try re-formatting the card on your computer.
I've seen several folks with various quirky and random read issues, and a simple re-format cleared it up, when the phone's own format feature didn't help. Also a common symptom, the SD card works fine on other devices.
Folks keep accusing the KitKat SD permission changes. But those changes only apply to write permissions, not read permissions. My gut feeling, its some quirk with the phone itself and something to do with SD formatting.

Reformatted from the phone. can not do it from my laptop because it says it is write protected. have not got a program to get around that yet. as for creating word doc, have not tried it. going to put it in wife's S5 and see if it likes it better and see if her card likes my phone any better . as for the card itself it is a Sandisk ultra class 10 32gig.

Silly question perhaps, but like a lot of people I suspect I am new to a smart phone and to android.
When I connect the Desire to my PC and mount as an external drive, I can see all the folders. But which folders are on the SD Card - eg in which do I put new music etc into? I see Mp3 and Media. Do I have to create folders on the card (in media?) called Video, Documents etc? Does it matter what I call them? And while I am at it, are the photos stored on the SD Card by default?
I'm partly muddled because the phone came with music samples on already - but I don't know if this is on the card already (odd?) or elsewhere in the phone.
I don't have a micro SD reader to check independently.
Sorry if this is obvious to everyone else.

Just create a Music folder in the root of your SD card and create folders within that directory.
e.g. Storage Card\Music\Chris Brown\[the mp3 file]
Picture and Video files should be placed in the DCIM directory, for example, to store video files, create a new folder called DCIM, and then create another folder within that called 100MEDIA, and place picture files and video files within that.
The structure will be Storage Card\DCIM\100MEDIA\[the picture file] for pictures, and Storage Card\DCIM\100MEDIA\[the video file] for videos.
Or you can just stick a folder on the root called 'photos' and this will be picked up fine...

This.
It really doesn't matter where you put the files, as the phone will detect the file formats automatically, and place them in their corrisponding places (ie. Photos and video will go to the Photos app, Music will go in the Music app).
Having said that, mine didn't pick things up first time - had to format the card in the Desire but now all works fine
Thanks.
But how do I navigate to the SD Card to find the root from the set of folders that comes up when I plug in the phone? None of them say SD card.
I get a removable drive (G) and then a set of folders beginning Lost Dir ending Bookmarks. Among them is Media, Music, Android and things like Rosiescroll (?), plus junk like HTC news which I guess I can delete. So are Media and Music on the SD Card? But not Android?
Ah! Or are ALL of these on the SD Card? I can only see the SD card and nothing of the phone system at all itself? So do I need rosiescroll, svox, blueFTPThumbnails?

The Storage Card is root
e.g. Storage Card (root)\Music\...
That removable disk is the SD card, the Android OS and anything that is on the device by default is on the phones internal memory, which cannot be accessed yet (I guess that will all change once those clever devs manage to root the thing). I'm not too sure about apps you may have installed yourself, I think they get installed to the internal memory as well.
I have flashed several JB Roms on my Dinc. Namely, Albinoman's RC 3, Pons AOKP and Pons CM10. All are great roms. On Albinoman' I can access music and ringtones on the SD card. However, for the other JB roms, I can not access ringtones or music on the SD Card or emmc.
Couple of things:
1) The roms were all installed with clean wipes. Format boot, system, factory reset, etc.
2) The SD card has pictures and documents that are readable by other programs and load no problem,
3) The SD card music files and ringtones appear in my file browser (File Expert), and if i click on I can play each singularly in FileExpert
4) I tried several different music players and they do not read or recognize the music on SD card. They see/report "Zero" songs.. Even FileExpert reports no songs (weird ehh?).
5) In the system/sound settings, the only sounds that appear are system sounds and ringtones.
6) I tried fixing permisions
7) I also tried copying "ringtones" to a folder of the same name on the emmc. Ditto for some music.
8) I do have sound, using the notifications and ringtones that came with the rom. So I got that going for me.
So at this point I ask for some assistance. But as I am not totally soundless, I can survive. Thanks!
Running CM10, I have no idea, as I only use ringtones from the SD card, same for playing music, and I have no issues here.

These files tell the system to not scan those directories and sub-directories, so if they're on the root of the sdcard or anywhere you want the music to be scanned, then yes.

You beat me to it!
Most likely it was caused due to a buggy version of ROM manager if the OP was using it. I think I'll use some .nomedia files to limit the scanning to just my music and camera/screenshot folders. I've never used them but it may help cut battery usage due to scanning.
Zimeron & Tiny: Thank you! Unfortunately it worked only temporarily. So I suspect something is up with my uSD card, although using various tools nothing was listed wrong. I swapped the 32 GB Class 4 card for a 8 GB card Class 4 card, copied files over, and I am up and running with Ringtones and Music through several reboots, tests and trials. When I get the space (and time) I will copy the content on the 32 GB card, wipe, format and refill. If it still does not work then perhaps there is some uSD size limit with the ROM, or I just need a new 32 GB uSD card. Thanks again for all your time.
For those who have the ".nomedia" file issue:
1) Mount the SD card on a PC (this can be done several ways: USB adapter, or cable rigt to phone with USB drive enabled)
2) Open Explorer on the PC to view the drive (if it does not pop up automatically)
3) In the Explorer search bar type: .nomedia
4) Hit enter then click on: Search in Subfolders
5) Select and delete the .nomedia files found in media folders with music and ringtones
6) Repeat the above for the EMMC.
Enjoy your music!

Didn't do the trick. Now that I know the problem and what to search on, I am finding the issue across devices on JB Roms. Interesting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880163
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1969205 (I found non xda links as well, but did not include here)
ROM manager is being pointed to as the source at several sites. I do not NOW use ROM manager, but their may be lingering files. Really? That is almost like a vi... a vir... I can't spit it out and wont. In the forums I see talk of wiping this and that, which brings me back to trying a newly formatted SD card, a totally clean wipe, and Rom install. Or seeing how future nightly's may change the handling of media.
Perhaps this belongs in a development forum as a JB issue?
Tiny:
Your patch here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1882918&page=81 to Pons' CM10 Kang totally fixed the issue!! I see all ringtones and media files on the SD card. Checking in Titanium backup prior and after flashing the ROM I found
Prior: System ROM: 260 MB (12.1 MB Free)
After: System ROM: 260 MB (64.4 MB Free)
So the lack of system space may not have enabled seeing all the media files in some way or another? Pons was always saying how tough it was to squeeze JB into the Inc. When he gets back, he should be thrilled with this. I know I am. Thanks again. Issue solved! :good:
Ever since I rooted my note 2, I keep losing access to the external SD card. Trying to access through file managers or apps (music or video player) results in freezing/hanging. If I unmount then mount, I will briefly have access and it will play files as normal. After I watch a movie, I will not be able to open another file. I have to unmount and mount again.
I've tried just about everything I can think of. still need to reformat the card. Any other ideas?
Can you see files on your ext sd with a file mgr? If you are only having issues with media players finding music or videos, there are a number of free "rescan" apps in market. This just happened to me (i.e., alarm clock xtreme and stock music player couldn't find my mp3 files on ext sd)... Only took 30 sec to resolve by running "Rescan SD" app... now all my apps can find my media files stored on ext sd... something to try at least...

I have the same problem. Everything worked fine for a month after root. Today i plugged in using a 3rd party charger and now the card wont mount or stay mounted. Ive used other 3rd party charges without problem. Could thisbe the problem?

Sounds like you sd card is going. Backup all data on the card to the pc if possible.
SOLVED!!!!!!
FINALLY, THE SOLUTION!
I scoured all over internet trying to solve the issue of any media player finding music from neither SD Card (internal nor external), even though file explorers did, so I will be posting this on every relevant thread I find.
This method worked for me, so results may vary:
1- Download Rescan Media (I used the root version):
2- Download Media scanner:
3- Go to Settings / Applications / All / Media Storage and clear data
4- Reboot
5- Open Rescan media and disable the media scanner
6- Now re-enable it
7- Now, open Media scanner and tap Start scanning
8- Voilá, now every player will recognize the music stored on both SD Cards.
*As I said, this method worked for me, so maybe just some of the steps above were necessary, but... anyway.
Good luck!
Hey everyone, pretty much first serious post. Hope someone can help me with it.
I have an At&t Galaxy s3, running the latest aokp rom, by task 650, its up to android 4.3
my issue is that i can add files to my phones internal sd card and its external sd card, but once i restart, the files are gone. all my files that i added even as long as a week or two ago are still there, even some things that i delete return once i reboot. i can move files from my internal sd card to the external and they stay after a reboot and vice versa. so i know that things can be added. but for some reason when i transfer music through windows file explorer to either sd card as soon as i reboot those files are gone. when i xfer the files it does say that "your device might not be able to play or view this file."
i can even play the music for a while after copying it as long as i don't restart, eventually it starts to go into hyperdrive so its a second of squiggles then goes to next song.
even if i transfer files through a wifi based app like air droid or just using an app to copying over a shared network the same thing happens.
i don't think that the internal sd card or external are corrupt because i can move files back and forth as long as they were on the device originally.
i don't know if i should reformat my external sd card because i doubt it would fix it then i'd be out of all my music.
really hoping someone can help me,
this was happening before i upgraded to 4.3 having done that only a day or two ago and it has been happening for at least a couple weeks, and it worked on the 4.2 version i had because i took me a couple months to upgrade to 4.3 and in that time i did add files to the internal and external.
last thing to mention, with a torrent phone app when i download files they also dissappear.
hope someone can help me with this, and that it's simple.
i'd rather feel dumb than it be something complicated.
thanks for any and all help yall can give.
update
I did a full clean install of the aokp rom i'm on wiiping everything instead of just the dalvik cache and cache, which normally works fine.
now the internal sd card retains the files i'm adding to it, even after a couple reboots. which is a step up. but the external still won't let me add files to it, even if i copy them over from my internal to the external using astro file manager or es file explorer. on restart files are gone from the external. i don't think that the external sd card is corrupt but i'm copying all the file off of it right now, then plan to reformat. not sure how i'll go about it, but i really hope it works.
this is really frustrating, its a 64gb external micro sd card that has always worked perfectly.
any input at all would be a great help.
update 2
my external sd card is the problem then i guess, because i put it in my brothers phone, did reformat, and it says reformating deleting all data. then remounts it.
shows exact same amount of available space and storage, stuck at 42.2gb or whatever, if i go into the sd card manually and delete files as soon as i reboot the phone all the files are back.
is there anyway to fix this?
Hello folks, I bought my M8 3 weeks ago and it is rooted, unlocked bootloader, latest TWRP, stock sense ROM and elemental x kernel. I initially purchased a 32gb Samsung evo sd card but found myself maxing it within a few days with movies, then i bought a 64gb Samsung evo sd card and assumed all was well. I formatted the card and ran the external sd card patch app from the playstore which granted me write permission to the sd card (it is not possible on stock htc kernel but ss soon ss i flashed elementalx kernel it allowed me to write any data to the sd card).
But the problem is whenever i download a movie via utorrent and set the download path to the sd card, it downloads fine, but when i use my file explorer to check the sd card movie download folder, it shows the movie folder name but when i open the folder there is nothing inside or someimes it doesn't even show the movie folder at all, almost as if it was never even downloaded but if i switch back to utorrent, the movie is 100% downloaded and is uploading.
Sometimes, it actually downloads and i can see the movie in the folder, but when i click on the movir, it says 'Sorry unable to play thid file'. I have use astro file manager and es file manager, i have used diceplayer, mx player sand bs player. I don't think the file manager or the the media player is the problem. When i open settings and go to make more space, 10gb of my sd storage is being taken by these files but they are nowhere to be found on my sd card storage using a file manager. But i know these movies are on the sd card because it is taking up gigabytes of space.
I've tried to reformat the sd card, factory reset the phone e.t.c. but i am still having the ssme issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Can any other apps write to the card? I'd also get myself a copy of root explorer. Have you tried searching for the files in question. They may not be in the folder you think they are.
Also the stock kernel does support sd card write access with patch. Might have to be s-off though.
What formats are the movies in? Try to copy a movie with a format you know works in and then do one with another format and check. I know certain formats don't work with HTC.
I'd also try and see if other movie watching apps can read it. If you don't mine me asking, when you formatted the card what did you format it too?

Yes, i know the stock kernel does not support it. Which was why i wrote in the op that i flashed elemental x before performing a successful write access patch.
Other apps can write to the card, i played the respawnables from the sd card, i can copy pictures and my nandroid backup. It's just my movies that sometimes copies into a folder which is empty inside or it full copies and then when i try to play, it shows me a sorry cannot play video file error on all the movie players i have tried from the playstore.

Have you noticed one working more then the other? or do they both not show up. My suggestion is your reformat the sdcard on your computer instead of through your phone to be fully compatible with the movie files. I have an external 64gb and I have no issues. I formatted it through the computer though.
Also, try to restart your phone and check for the files, or using a different file explorer.

I understand that, but a 32gb sdcard is quite different then 64gb sdcard with the way its formatted and that's what I am worried about.
I'm using a samsung 64gb evo card no problems. Why not try a different torrent app. I prefer the kickass torrents app as it has more options and allows you to open the download folder direct from the app.

That is exactly what i'm using. A samsung evo 64gb. I will attempt to reformat it on a pc tomorrow.
I tried to grant write permission on the stock htc kernel but it didn't work with the 2 apps i found on the playstore. But it worked instantly with elemental x kernel.
Shall i reformat it on the pc with the memory card still inside the phone?
I'm guessing it's due to the file sizes. When the card is formatted as fat32 it has its file size limits.
Check some more on that note to get some specific info. Just a hunch

I wouldn't recommend doing that no, if possible take it out of your phone and use an adapter to connect it to your computer. You want a direct connection to the sdcard.

Yeah you don't want to format to FAT32 thats for 32gb cards and below. For a 64gb you want to format it to exFAT. Thats how mine is formatted, and how it should come honestly. After that you shouldn't have any issues reading and running your movie files. According to this article video files over 4gb cannot be accessed which would be your issue with the files on a FAT32.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ht...nnot-handle-video-files-greater-than-4gb.html
so that could be your issue as well.

I have come across that thread before making this thread. The SD Card was initially in exFAT format but when the issues arose I formatted it to FAT32 and now I have reformated it using windows to exFAT. I'm copying the movie files now and will see what happens.
My movies are all 1080p but below 2gb file size, I have copied the movies to my limited internal storage and they work perfectly file. It is simply when I copy them to the SD Card that they become lost within the LOST.DIR or they copy and i get the Sorry cannont play video file error with any media player I download from the playstore.

This issue seems strange to me. I also have a 64gb card, formatted to fat32. I have no problems at all moving uTorrented movies from my downloads folder to extSD (I have a movie folder on ext, but I download to internal). Maybe try ES File Explorer to move them. That's what I'm using.

Last night i fornatted to exFAT on windows using my sd card adapter, then i mounted it and downloaded 5 torrent movies directly to the sd card. I woke up this morning and discovered that the folder where those torrent movies were downloaded was empty. But somehow the movies are on the sd card and taking up space, but i iust can't find them.
When i download the torrent movies to the internal memory, it is fine, when i copy the torented file from internal to sd card, it is also fine. But it just seems impossible to download torrents directly to the sd card and bypass the copy from internal to external always procedure.
I will try FAT32 format on windows and download torrenrs directly to the sd card, i am hoping this will work as i am very tired of this issue. I invested a lot of money on this phone and this 64b samsung evo and i am so far not impressed.
Also in the op, i mentioned that i have tried astro and es file manager. But thanks.
