I can get to downloading mode but recovery mode, I get stuck on an Android logo lying down with a red exclamation mark. I had failed to convert to yakju through fast boot, I got stuck to Google logo back then and also no recovery mode. Then I tried the toolkit and everything is working smoothly except for the recovery mode. What should I do? How can I get that working?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
What I would do is use the tool kit in these forms to install the recovery it seems like you have lost your recovery , that's what happens when you lose your recovery you get the Android guy lying down. When using the toolkit make sure you follow the instructions exactly! If you don't it will default and you will lose recovery.
---------- Post added at 07:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:10 AM ----------
Also just a little bit of information in the toolkit you have an option to rename your stock recovery if you don't do this and use this option it will default in rewrite over your recovery the stock recovery .
Thanks!
Is there a risk of losing any data while using the toolkit to install stock recovery?
About renaming, I don't really understand. Do I need to rename the stock recovery I'm going to install? If I don't use the rename option, what do I lose? Could you please explain this part a bit. Thanks again!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Download the G nex tool kit I believe it's version 7.8 it explains everything just do some reading and what I mean about the recovery is the stock recovery has to be renamed for you to install a recovery or it will not work if you read the gnex toolkit it explains the whole thing. No you do not have to rename the recovery you're installing. The option to rename the stock recovery that comes with your phone is in gnex toolkit. I think it's option 3 maybe? Trust me read the notes that come in the toolkit is very easy!
You haven't lost recovery, that's just stock recovery, you need to remove the file that puts it back on every reboot (search or there's an option in the toolkit if you must) then fast boot flash Cwm or twrp and you are set
I have tried both "Installing Stock Recover" and "Renaming" and both got me to the same lying down Android with the red exclamation mark. What else should I try?

You need to do renaming then install twrp or Cwm recovery, stock recovery is useless to you, that's what the Android on its back is.

You can't flash anything in stock other than factory reset and allow the phone to self install OTAs..
I understand and I want to keep the stock recovery and to get it to work to be able to install OTA directly. How do I get it to work? I have to install CWM then I'd be able to switch back to stock? I'm lost

You can't accept and auto-install an OTA with a custom recovery image. You have to either have stock recovery and let it install, or use CWM to flash it manually.
What's the easiest thing to do? How would I be able to do it?

Your choice. Either flash back to the stock recovery and accept the OTA, or get a download of the OTA and flash it thru CWM.

I have a Koodo Samsung Galaxy 2x sgh-t989d. running ICS 404 .I have been attempting to root and run a custom mod.CM9
I installed cwm recovery and was able to root, but made a mistake and I dont believe cwm recovery was installed correctly as I was not properly in download mode when I ran odin.
Was able to achieve root, but phone had odd quirk that it would hang on shut down. Had to remove battery.
I installed cm9 but it hung on boot screen animation so i restored but the hang on shut off remained. I then attempted to reinstall CWM recovery again using odin. thinking it didnt install correctly the first time....bad idea
Result: now when I try to access CWM recovery the lines are double spaced and I cant do anything but reboot.
Is there a way to repair the cwm recovery or flash my phone back to stock?
I am a total noob and hope this is the right place for this and would very much appreciate any help I can get.
If you're rooted you can download ROM Manager from Play, it will flash CWM for you.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately No I had tried to restore to factory because of the hanging on shutdown so I am stuck with the phone unrooted. I can access the CWM recovery folders via the sd card, so its really a matter of fixing the CWM install without root.
I have noticed that there is a koodo stock signed zip for my phone on this site which i have downloaded. Is there a way to flash that onto the phone bypassing CWM.
My phone is still operational and so I am a little afraid of making it worse.
If you can get your phone in download mode and connect to odin the you should be able to restore back to stock rom/recovery and perhaps try the process again..

Yes, I can still get into download mode and hook to odin.
Oddly I installed CWM the first time with odin, in recovery mode I believe, and it installed with an error but it worked.
Reinstalling CWM using odin in download mode is what messed up CWM in the first place, so I was a little afraid to try it again..
I clicked pda and pointed towards recovery.tar.md5 as per instructions that I cant link to yet.
so your saying I should try it again?

Thanks for your timet guys, How do I use odin to get back to stock? I know how to use CWM to do it.
this is for soft bricked, but it's exactly the same process.

Side note: make sure you run odin as admin, less likely to get errors. And i don't know much about koodo but i would assume that you would need their stock tar file for all this to work

I don't know if there is an odin flashable stock koodo rom in the development thread yet. You could need that to do it..
However if you are having problems with cwm there is an odin flashable twrp in the dev thread.. Once you install that you can flash superuser and root your phone.. Or even go back to cwm if you choose to

It doesn't use .tar files and neither does cwm I think what you are referring too is .zip files..
Unless specified you can flash anything in this forum with twrp. Some roms require cwm but once you have a working recovery on your phone you will easily be able to switch from one to the other

You must be in download mode to use odin.. Otherwise it won't detect your phone...Open odin then Hold Vol down + power the release power once your phone vibrates then connect it to your computer with usb.. Then you should be connected

After the jelly bean update. I lost root. Then I rooted with the wug fresh rooting toolkit. Then I flashed cwm from the ROM manager. When I tried to go to cwm to flash a ROM it showed the android with the red sign which I think means that you don't have recovery.
