I'm completely new to flashing and modifying my phone in any way. But the improvements I see people talking about from flashing to new ROMs are compelling me to try it out.
I was sceptical about flashing my nexus a couple months ago when some ROMs had been released but from what I'm reading now people are pretty confident with how stable they are.
I'm looking for any of the following:
Smoother/More responsive OS
Improved Battery Life
4.0.3 fixes
I'm okay with slight modifications such as the removal of the Google search bar on home screen
Thanks, and if possible could someone link me to anything that would help/guide me through flashing my nexus.

Hey,
I was sceptoical too but rooting was the best thing I could have done.
Check out AOKP BUild 15 on these forums for a really good rom and very customised. It is stable and has been working for me perfectly. Way better than stock!
Good luck.

How does it compare to CM and could you tell me about some new features that build would give me?
Also, do I still receive updates from google if I used modified ROMs? If I flash to AOKP Build 15 will I be able to update to 4.0.4 later and continue to 4.0.5 etc
edit: Is this what you are talking about? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432408
edit 2: seems that 'AOKP' isn't mutually exclusive with 'CM', kinda shows how much I know lol
edit 3: the thread says 'Compatibility:' with i9020 and i9023 which google tells me are Nexus S phones, will it still work with my Galaxy Nexus?

This is the one I am using and it's brilliant.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402341
There are cool features like putting data off when you switch the screen off, saves battery. Also you can add notification toggles which are very handy.
In terms of getting future updates from Google, the devs on here always have the latest source code and modify it so when 4.0.5. is out you will have a rom on here that you can flash.
Seriously root it dude and have fun. It just gives the phone something extra and generally makes things faster.
How exactly do I put that ROM on my phone lol
I have no idea what '4. Wipe Dalvik cache.' would require me doing.

Ok you need to look at the rooting and modding guides on here. Wiping the davlik cache is something you do when you have the phone in recovery mode. It is very easy to do and the instructions are very well written. Out the guides here:

Good luck and if all goes well I bet you won't regret it.

No probs, no automatic updates but generally you will have the latest Android OS because the devs on here do such a great job at releasing them.
Have fun!
So I'm at this part of the guide
'b. Enter CWM Recovery by first entering the Fastboot mode Screen (Disconnect the usb cable (if you have one plugged in), then shut down your phone. Keep holding the 'Volume Up' and 'Volume Down' buttons and press the 'Power' button to boot the phone into FastBoot Mode), then select 'Recovery mode' by pressing the 'Volume Down' button and then press the 'Power' button to enter CMW Recovery.'
But after I select Recovery Mode, I get an android on the floor with a red triangle sign with a ! in it over the android.
What's this mean?
Also what should I use 'MSKIPS' GALAXY NEXUS TOOLKIT' for?
One of the steps under that part of the guide is 'After you have finished you can either boot straight into CWM Recovery to flash a Custom Rom (if you have already downloaded one and copied it to the root of your Internal Memory on your phone)', should I proceed with that? I have the KANGY2Pack on the root of my internal storage.

Yeah if you can enter recovery mode you should be able to apply a rom.

After I went through this process, it appears my phone is just as it would be if I did a factory reset.
Ok, like I said on the PM, just start over. You are very close to having it rooted.
And get this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19794530
Will give you an extra boost (especially the appdrawer).
Don't install any 4.0.1/4.0.2 based roms like ARHD. 4.0.3 based roms like Bigxie's rom or openkang are much faster!

Every time I try to install the Kangy2 zip file from within CWM Recovery I get 'installation aborted', what would cause this?

How do I install a kernel? I think I know how to flash a rom (just install the zip from root storage via CWM Recovery after you've rooted/unlocked bootloader).
What different changes does a different kernel give vs different ROM?

Woo hoo! Glad you got sorted after all the private messages. Flashing the kernel ios the same as flashing a rom, the same method I mean.
Kernels vary so I would recommend Apex build five kernel, that's not to say any of the other ones are bad but just the one I am using and it works well.
Glad you got all sorted anyway dude.

Im not sure if that is normal or not but whatev it works great now
doing the same thing right now. i'm in germany so i'm not sure if that's what's causing the slow download speed 500Mbps link @ a convention center, but i'm at 416MB out of 617MB and very very very patiently waiting.
it's good to hear that you only ran into that small issue. i'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks!

Aww man. It figures, I just finished flashing another rom like, about 18 hours ago. Now with finals coming up, I don't have time to do this one! Oh well, I guess I have something to do AFTER finals then, hahaha.

Is your power saving mode on? I've always found it makes so many things laggy, unfortunately. Might be enabled by default on the rom. Worth a look.
Great community here. Yesterday I was non-rooted ICS. Today I'm rooted JB with Wallet.
My phone just got 1000% better.
First of all, I appreciate all the Devs hard work bringing these Roms to us! :good:
I was running rooted UCALH9. Updated to this JB via Odin and all SEEMED good. Problems I had:
1) Play Store FC's - FIX - I went into Application Manager and removed updates for the Play Store app, which reverted it back to the default Play Store app. This fixed my problem. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT UNINSTALL!
2) Rom Manager - I would get root user authentication error when trying to Fix Permissions. Everything else in Rom Manager worked. No fix at this time.
3) Gallery - None of my pictures were showing up. This is even after clearing caches. I am convinced it's because I can't Fix Permissions, but what do I know... No fix at this time.
Any help would be appreciated!
Damn I had that same Play Store FC problem yesterday -- I wish I'd have figured that out. I ended up doing factory reset lol.
I receive same fix permission error as you, but I rebooted into recovery to do it.

You didn't happen to play with the camera at all, did you?
I can live with the Fix Permissions via CMW, so that would clear up 2 out of 3 of my problems. All I need is a fix for the Gallery problem, and I can go back to Official JB.
Thanks!
Howl long was the flash?
I'm inside Odin on flashing system.img.ext4 right now and it stays there which looks like about 20% for last 10 minutes with no forward movement.
How long do I need to wait before I consider something is wrong with flash process?
Changing cable to Samsung one did the trick if you are in the same situation.

If you are talking about flashing the root injected JB i post, yes you can flash it after upgrading and no it won't wipe anything in data, everything should be preserved for you.
Weather here sux.... Hovering slightly above 0 degrees with 80 mph winds for the last week so add on the wind chill factor and u can only imagine... And no snow yet.

After installing the rXTREME v6.2 ROM for the i9305, I selected restart from Recovery and it never turned back on. The battery was fully charged before I installed this custom ROM.
- I have removed the battery for an hour and then tried again turn it on - no success. Can't get into Download mode using the 3-buttons.
- When I plug it into my laptop via USB I hear the 'connected sound' and when I remove it I hear the 'disconnected sound', but I do not see any ability to access the phone via Windows Explorer. The driver is found and connected too.
- I tried using Odin and it say's "Added!" when I connect, but the COM:x field is 'yellow', not blue. (Keep in mind I can't get into Download mode on my phone, but I still tried with Odin) I load the right PDA file (I9305XXBMA3_I9305MEOBMA1_I9305XXBLL5_HOME.tar.md5) and have 'Auto Reboot' and 'F. Reset Time' checked. Odin message stays on status "SetupConnection..". I've left it this way many times, one time overnight. But with no success.
Any advice??? Please help :/
Re: Galaxy s3 i9305 won't turn on after installing custom rom (AT&T LTE 4G version)
You are hard bricked. You flashed an international ROM to a us phone (or vice versa, your thread title is a little confusing on what device model you have)
JTAG or send to Samsung.

I'm not sure he's hard bricked. Hard brick means no signs of life. Odin can see it, so there's obviously some sign of life. You need to find the proper stock firmware for your phone and try to flash back to stock

ODIN also detects hard bricks. It usually shows up as an unknown device with no drivers and can't be flashed. I've been there and done that with my own hard brick.
As his post says his phone won't boot, even after a battery pull and can't get into download or recovery. That would be no signs of life.
I have seen it happen too many times with people flashing international ROMs to their us devices. 95% of the time it is always a hard brick.
Unless he provides us with an update showing that the phone can boot, at all, even a flicker of the screen, its a dead phone. =/

people should really read before they actually flash a new rom... what you flashed is an international version.

I concur. Too many people gloss over the thread to flash whatever they feel like it. (even saw people using a vzw app to unlock their att boot loader.. which isn't even locked. also hard bricked. )
The lucky few do get a soft brick. Those lucky few were able to see the Samsung boot logo though. It all depends on the ROM. For instance if you flash the international foxhound ROM its a guaranteed brick. 3 different people in a 2 day span I helped not too long ago. all flashed foxhound all hard bricks.

I really feel XDA should implement a test on reading comp and flashing basics before you are allowed access to dev forums for ROMs.

people should really do research before actually doing it in any way.
Do you get any signs of life on the screen at all? Either Recovery or Download mode? The Galaxy S3 splash screen? Anything at all?
If not, then it's a hard brick and you can get it repaired via a JTAG service (check eBay).
However, if you get ANY signs of life on the screen at all, even if for just a moment, then you might be able to repair things yourself.

I think I accidentally erased :touchwiz: app from my phone. And some how my phone just froze.
So I did reset factory and erase data.
As of now I just rooted my phone again and try to restore my "backup" before this things happen.
Q: how can I install :touchwiz: to my phone?
Q: How can I keep my custom recovery mode?
Q: Can I make my phone to "Sff" condition?
Q: How should I do inside download mode?
Thank you for all the quick support, I will try to replay ASAP because I have to work with an odd hour schedule.
If you can access custom recovery which is power+hone+up volume your phone should still be rooted and everything is fine. All you need is a ROM to flash. Take your SD card out and using a computer download a TW rom and put it on your SD card. Put the SD card into the phone and boot into the custom recovery and flash the rom.
Use the stock rom on this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6 you can use either of the first two, I would use the 2nd one DeOdexed sprint stock rom. Good luck.

What am I doing wrong?
Hi guys,
Can someone please help?
The other day i followed cnet guide to rooting whilst running gingerbread.
Here : [I can't post links yet]
This worked fine.
I ran kies air today and it said there was a firmware upgrade.. so i let kies do its business and it now has Jellybean on it.
But i noticed the root access had been lost again.
So I followed Cnets guide again, but something has gone wrong >.>
It no longer will boot up and is stuck on "samsung galaxy ace 2 gt-i8160" splash screen.
Volume down + home + power still works.. but...
I can't get into recovery mode (vol up + home + power).. so i can't complete the final step installing "update_su.zip"
Have i bricked the phone? Damnit.. knew i should have left well alone..
Please help.. I'm new to all these smart phones and rooting >.>
Thank you
Blegh.. now I see what I have done wrong
Used the wrong file...
Ok so im following instructions on Update Galaxy Ace 2 with Official I8160XXMF1 Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean [GUIDE] over on ibtimes
Downloaded the file.. got phone in download mode trying that now.. fingers crossed..
Ok.. that seems to have worked.. but JB still seems laggy compared to GB.. maybe i just need to factory reset and get rif of half the crap.. I don't know what is slowing the phone down.. and I also noticed JB gives less total memory compared to GB.. Is this normal? GB had 555MB now its 482 MB?! hmmm..
I recommend getting a ROM, theu would make the phpne go faster and remove half the bloatware, if you like the Samsung touchwiz look use kyrillos ROM or lite ROM etc, however if you like the aosp look go for a unofficial cyanogenmod ROM, for the ram thing follow this:

Hope this helps
