Quick question for you all, I was looking at rooting my phone, and been doing lots and lots of reading and saw that if I want to flash a ROM, I need to install CWM once I've rooted my phone in order to load any ROM's on it or anything really...
My question is, I have the Canadian Version of the GS3, the I747M, and found that it's a bit complicated to install on the phone? Is this true? There seems to be mixed reviews on this...
Saw that its version 6.0.1.2 and 6.0.1.4 for Touch for the Samsung Galaxy S3 (AT&T) I747. Can I just follow these steps:
http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-tutorials/how-to-install-clockworkmodcwm-recovery-on-galaxy-s3/
and load this CWM (for AT&T) being its not exactly the same as the Canadian phone? Is there something special I need to do to load 6.0.1.2 onto my I747M phone without any problems? I'm assuming that using the CWM for AT&T(I747) on Bell (I747M) shouldn't be any different? Correct?
Thanks
JP

Thanks, I've read that thread but still doesn't answer my question above... Looking for a clear answer and not just some threads, I've done more than enough research, the reason I did a new thread for my question...
Thanks,
JP
sorry, when I read the thread I linked IMO it does answer your question: CWM is the same for ATT as Bell.
The thread details how to root and install CWM using Odin. You can after installing CWM 5.4.5 then use CWM to flash the 6.01.2 zip posted in the developer's thread or the touch version within CWM.
Once installed, its easy to update CWM -- the issue is the initial install.
Yes, there are many ways to approach this: rule one of offering advice though is only to offer advice based on personal experience of what does or does not work -- I gave you answer based on what I know to be safe, reliable and usable from direct experience.
Perhaps others will assist differently. The post you linked to is not an xda thread: you asked and I suggested an xda thread related for which assistance exists on xda.

This, that's what I wanted to know... so I need to install CWM 5.4.5 first on my phone? That's where I find it confusing, your thread is none the less great, I used it to root my Bell phone actually, but it's the CWM that I dont want any troubles with and find it confusing...
So having said that, which version do I install on my GS3 first so I dont have any issues during the inital install?
Thanks,
JP
I installed 6.0.1.4 and had problem with backup so I am using older version 5.8.4.5, work fine.

I would use TWRP, you can easily flash it once youre rooted using "Goo Manager" from the market. I much prefer it over CWM.

You could also use Mobile Odin. I have flashed numerous times using Mobile Odin and all have been succesful. This is a great tool.

because the only way to receive the ota update is to be completely stock. as far upgrading to ICS, if you have clockworkmod recovery you can just flash any custom rom as long as you follow the instructions posted in the OP for that specific rom. If you dont have CWM than just use autoroot to flash a CWM recovery (since your on GB). Since your already rooted just use the option for flashing the recovery. Autoroot is a sticky thread i believe.
How do I know if I have CWM recovery?

You probably don't have cwm. Use the "sfhub's autoroot package" to get cwm. Search for it. Then head to android development section to get any custom rom.

sorry at kinda tied up at work
the link below is the link for shub autoroot package. download and unzip it. read the instructions very carefully as long as you follow them you will get clockworkmod recovery

below is the link for the development section. here is where you can download the ROM you would like. We have a bunch of great devs so there are a ton of different ROMs to choose from FF18 is the official sprint update for the e4gt. personally i like the Blu Kuban ROM but you'll have to look through the threads and see what you like. There are some that are stock themed with root. Its all up to what you want. I would say look at the instructions for the ROMs very carefully as some ROMs need to be installed in 2 parts. So make sure you READ it twice if you have to.

If the rom supports it then yes. Read in the op of the rom you select and it will be usually listed if it includes wifi hotspot or not.

I was recently asked to post some threads here on XDA with the tutorials I have on my site. As time permits I will be posting a series of threads here to the Q&A section that will hopefully answer most questions that might come up.
If you can't find your answer in one of my threads I would highly recommend BluesRulez One Stop FAQ Thread. It is an awesome resource and has answers to just about every question I've seen come up!

This thread details the process of how to root your device without having to flash a full stock ROM. This method works for the Sprint, Boost and Virgin Samsung Galaxy S2 (SPH-D710, SPH-D710BST and SPH-D710VMUB).
This method uses an Odin One-Click Kernel to install a kernel that includes a Custom Recovery. Once booted into the Custom Recovery you can then flash Superuser which will root your phone and give you Superuser access.
Prerequisites:
A PC running Windows with the Samsung Mobile Drivers Installed. The Samsung Mobile Drivers are available here.
Any One-Click Kernel (preferably from the Android version you will be using, i.e. GB, ICS or JB).
All Sprint One-Click Recovery kernels can be found here.
For this particular tutorial I used the following kernels:
Gingerbread: Chris41g's EL26 Stock CWM5 Repack
Ice Cream Sandwich: Agat63's tFI27 Stock Recovery Repack (rev 2)
Jelly Bean: Agat63's Source-Built GB27 Recovery
Superuser (or SuperSU, MIUI Security, and etc) in a flashable zip, saved on your Internal or External SD Card. For this method I used SuperSU v1.25 (but any SU in a flashable ZIP should work). You can download several different versions here.
Although not required it is recommended that you have Samsung Kies installed on your PC as well. You can download Samsung Kies here.
Side-Effects:
This method will trigger the Yellow Triangle upon start-up and will increase your Odin count.
It will also change your startup screen to look like the International GS2 startup screen.
Both of these side-effects are very easy to overcome due to the hard work of Chainfire and Garwynn. You can get TriangleAway from Chainfire's thread here.
For the rest of the tutorial please visit my site: www.rwilco12.com
Enjoy!

You might have to turn SU on depending on which version you flashed. Open the app and see if under settings you see something like "Enable SuperUser" and make sure it's enabled.
If that doesn't fix it we may need to try another zip with a different set of symlinks. Either way, we're here for you and will get you squared away.

If you're asking - Can I flash VM builds on the Sprint D710, the answer is - yes. Did it when I tested the builds and everything worked properly.
If you're asking - Can I flash a VM build and be on VM service? Obviously you'll need to be activated to their service and provisioned properly. That's when you'd need to make sure that mmsc/apn/nv data is captured. I don't know if VM is a byod provider. (write that shiz down)

Yes. Many, many people have used this method successfully.
There's nothing wrong with a stock kernel, it just doesn't have a custom recovery packed into it or any kernel tweaks.
But I am confused... If you're already rooted why are you pulling your hair out?

K. Before you dive in too much further I would recommend doing a little more research. This device had had issues in the past that have made it very easy to brick. You should be very careful.
As a side note - This thread is a how to root thread but it sounds like you're already rooted. I don't know that there's any reason to reroot your device. You don't actually have to be rooted to get on JB either. You could just flash a one-click of a JB ROM.
I have looked everywhere and there is either no/ or insufficient information on flashing ClockworkMod Recovery (Either Touch or Regular) on Samsung Galaxy S3 T999V (Wind Mobile) with Jelly Bean 4.1.1....
Is it possible? One of the main threads requires you to downgrade to ICS which I don't want to do. Would the guides on T-Mobile CWM flashing work for my version? I don't want to brick my device so I want to be absolutely sure before I try it.
Thanks in advance.
PS: I'm new to this ROM/flashing world and yes I did visit pretty much every possible guide but it did not answer this question.

Just install Rom Manager (CWM) or Goo Manager (TWRP) from the play store and install recovery from there. It will automatically choose the correct one.
But just to answer your question, if you look in one of the threads here devoted to the T999V and Canadian users, you will come across quite a few that have flashed both CWM and TWRP to their phone. So what i am saying, is yes you can flash the T999 d2tmo custom recoveries to your T999V. I have heard of no problems with it.
Ok great, thank you. I do have rom manager and when it asks me to choose from my device from the list for flash recovery, the only gs3 option is metro pcs (d2mtr). So I'll just have to just manually flash the tmobile version via Odin? And if so, will it be able to update through rom manager afterwards?
Thanks

Unless you have made any modifications to spoof your model phone for certain apps, (such as google wallet where you had to change the device name in the build.prop), it should be choosing the correct one automatically. You would have to verify this with another T999V user though. I cant say for sure since I dont have it and wasnt expecting to see that.
Try Goo Manager and while in the app, press menu and select Install OpenRecovery. It will automatically download and install the correct TWRP recovery. Just like RomManager, but since RM has Metro PCS as the option, I am more comfortable suggesting TWRP.

So that's it. I installed GooManager, pressed open recovery, it downloaded some d2can.img file for 10 seconds and said recovery installed. So now I have TWRP? I'm guessing TWRP has the same functionality as CWM?
Thanks.
Correct. They are both great recoveries. I personally prefer twrp, while some prefer cwm.

Hey Is it possible for you to get the Apns-conf.xml file for me?
Hi,
Got an GT-I9300 from Amazon just to discover that is a SGH-I747M but tweaked to show it as a 9300.
Now I'm stuck in 4.04 and can't upgrade to 4.1.2, tried stock 747m ROM but odin upload fails. Ofcourse Kies upgrade is not available.

Before you attempt to flash anything, download an app to verify which processor or amount of ram you have. If you flash the wrong thing, you'll end up with a nice shiny paperweight.

I'm pretty sure is a 747, if you check the screenshots I posted, the phone has 2 cores (vs 4 of the 9300) and more RAM than the 9300.

Yes, check the posted screenshots. Says hardware is 747
Your links aren't working to for me to see the pics but if the hardware is i747 then you will only want to flash i747 ROMs. Its a fairly simple matter to edit the file descriptors to change the information that shows in the about phone menu. I have been seeing alot of this from recent Amazon S3 purchases, sounds like some kind of scheme to make more money.

Just replace the spaces in the original post links
I've tried with 747 roms without luck, thats why I'm asking what I should do in this case
I'm pretty sure that I'm not the first wanting to have the correct ROM
Ahh silly me, didnt notice the space
Anyways, it has the correct gpu/chipset to be an i747, so your suspicions are correct. The next question is what isn't working when trying to flash to stock? Error codes etc.

Anyways, it has the correct gpu/chipset to be an i747, so your suspicions are correct. The next question is what isn't working when trying to flash to stock? Error codes etc.

Dont worry. I put the space because this forums blocks links for new users
Software update with OTA simply says "error processing". -> i.imgur. com/0ALVRSd.png
Over Kies gives the message I posted on the first screenshot
I can't remember the exact error on ODIN, I'll take a look and post

Hi,
Got an GT-I9300 from Amazon just to discover that is a SGH-I747M but tweaked to show it as a 9300.
Now I'm stuck in 4.04 and can't upgrade to 4.1.2, tried stock 747m ROM but odin upload fails. Ofcourse Kies upgrade is not available.
Any way to solve this?

Yeah, similar issue here. About Phone says i9300. When I booted into download mode, it said SGH I747. When I tried using GooManager to install a custom recovery, it detected the phone as 'd2can'. I'm bewildered.

d2can is an i747m aka the canadian version which is identical to the us variant hardware wise.

Before i did anything i would make sure that you are able to flash a stock rom in case of any problems.

And that brings us to my other question: Which ROM is gonna be the stock ROM? The i747 in the Download mode screen?

I would recommend following the steps in this thread to verify the hardware is infact that of an i747, if so use Odin the flash a stock i747 rom of your choice.

Except 4.3 stock unless you want to be there for a while(can not downgrade) and face a whole world of hurt if you are not using your exact carriers modem/bootrom.
So guys is there any solution? I can't flash stock 747 ROM via odin or kies. I'm stuck on 4.04 forever?
