I'm quite a beginner in the Android arena. Can anyone else recommend a good all in one adapter with a cable then? Thx.
This is what i was trying to say.
in this picture (first attached) the tablet using this usb adapter you couldn't put it inclined.
using a cable you can put it in this position (second attached).
or this (third attached)
One more thing. This USB HUB cable, that you see on picture, work fine with some pens but with this one "Data Traveler 32Gb G3" that i use on work, doesn´t work, it said that need extra power. I need to search more to see what is happening.
Thanks for the shots. I just flip my Note over so the connection is on top.

I can't seem to find an all-in-one adapter with the short cable as mgunthi suggested. I'm looking for an adapter for USB, SD and Micro SD and Micro USB. I guess there's a need for Micro or Mini USB for an External HD? If it's a mini USB, I'll just get an mini to micro USB adapter for the adapter? LOL Thanks.
Unless I just turn it upside down as requested by toenail_flicker
I have a external hard drive that I used to use via a usb to micro usb adapter with my old Sony Tablet S....
Who can recommend a cable/adapter to do the same for the Note 10.1 im buying on Monday!
The hard drive is usb with no external power source.

I have another question please. Can you use any USB-connected card reader on this tablet? Would it work fully with all card types? For instance using this one:
Kingston 19-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader FCR-HS219/1
Of course you need to use this with a USB adapter OR a female to female USB connector with the supplied USB cable. Would it work smoothly?
Thank you

Sorry but not all usb card reader works fine. I have on similar to the one you show here and i can't read a compact flash card, the note 10.1 send me a message that it not work, need more power to read the card.
I didin't test any other card because i have the usb cable for note 10.1 and i connected this to my nikon d300 and works fine, for sd card i use the card reader that i show before and it works ok.

Thank you for the heads up.So the card reader probably does not work at all. I would think at least it would work with SD cards! Anyone else? Thank you.
So the general report is buy cause it works and does everything or dont buy cause it always needs extra power and can I use this to plug in a external dvd drive that gets ac power from something and play dvds like nexus 7
USB Adapter
You have to buy USB Adapter.

Bought two OTG adapters on eBay, they arrived from China today. When I attach them they are both recognized by the system. However, when I insert a USB memory stick I receive an error message about "high powered USB device" and the system won't acknowledge the presence of a memory stick. But, if I insert the Samsung OTG adapter I have no problem getting the same memory sticks accepted.
Is there anything I can do to correct this? Or have I just wasted $13? (I'm not gonna cry if that is the case)

It is possible the active components in those adaptors plus the USB stick is pushing the consumption over the edge, where the simple Samsung adaptor does not.
I also have one of those adaptors by the way but have not had the same problem so far. Maybe my USB stick needs less power.

Try connecting everything together then connecting the OTG adapter to the Note. I have the same issue sometimes when connecting any device if the adapter is already connected.

Once in a while I had the same issue with the original adapter. With the new ones I don't get the error message but neither is the presence of the USB memory acknowledged. The larger one with cord has a blue power light that goes on. It turns off when I insert the stick but stay on when I insert it joint with the OTG adapter.

I have an OTG adapter that's jsut a data-port-plug then a cable leading to a female-USB, I've had a lot of issues with USB devices being classified as "high power" and not working (including an Xbox360 controller, which has been listed on this site as usable without external power) I've tried 5 different hubs, and only 1 will work (3 brand-name (2x Ultra, 1xBelkin) and 2 unbranded from china) that's the one that accepts external power.
I could be wrong but I think they pulled the same trick apple did and an update lowered the power to the docking port, so you HAVE to use a powered hub to do much of anything... (though for the record, none of my 4 USB sticks (1gb, 4gb, 64gb, 64gb) have required external power...)

So, now I have tried all possible connections to see if I could get the OTG adapters to work. The short answer is that they are rubbish.
I connected older (USB 1.0 and 2.0) memory sticks to no avail. Granted I didn't get the high power error message, but I didn't get anything else either, least of all access to my files. So that was out. I then connected a USB keyboard, again I received the high power error message and couldn't use the keyboard. Finally I connected a portable charger to the larger (5-in-1) connecter, the one with the cable, in order to see if that would help. All it did was burn the inside, took a few moments and then smoke started to come out together with the unmistakable smell of burnt copper.
Anyone, interested in these connectors would be wise to proceed with caution. Yes, the price is alluring, but if value is zero then anything over zero is too expensive.

Looks like the ability to connect a USB stick is questionable. I just got an adaptor, the one that is just cable with female usb on one end. I plug it in and the device says USB connected. Doesn't recognize the card. But I do not get the error about "high power device" that everyone is referring to. It just doesn't recognize the card.
I used two cards. One is an Attache 16gb that has a rather bright light on it. On the laptop, when its plugged in, it stays on, and blinks when being accessed. When I plug it in to the tablet, the light comes on for a couple seconds, goes out, and nothing.
The other one is a PNY 16gb with no light. I tried it thinking the light might have thrown the Attache over the edge. The PNY doesn't seem to be recognized either. No errors. Just no response.
Is there a mount or something I have to do somewhere? Documentation with this thing is less than stellar so if there IS a document that answers this, I haven't found it.
Thanks.
EDIT: I tried with a powered USB hub and it worked. So its definitely a level of power issue. Now the trick is to find a way to have portable power on the hub. I recently tried using one of the portable cell phone power packs but I think it may have been defective as it would not charge up. I had purchased a solar powered USB hub but it worked once then ceased forever to function.

The OTG cable is USB, as long as the external drive is a USB drive you should be fine, if when you say adapter you mean a power adapter I think you need one for the drive, the G Pro can't power an external drive.
Erik
OTG works very well with USB flashdisk and 3,5" external HDD with power adapter.
I dont think its gonna work with 2,5" external HDD, but you can try and post the result here.

I just plug in its auto detect .If yrs dont detect then its either yr cable faulty or yr rom could have messed up yr phone or the device you are connecting to cannot detect yr phone .There is no special sofware /application to use otg .
I agree w/ post #3. Your phone should read it automatically. I plug mine in and can pick it up immediately with the Root Explorer app.
Use debugging in developer options?
well my 3rd otg cable doesnt work so it must be my rom. anyone else using pacman rom with otg cable working?

As I said in my earlier post, I was able to locate the flash drive connected to my USB OTG with Root Explorer. It will be listed under storage.

If you want actual help, then you need to always provide sufficient details, such as what hardware you are trying to plug into the OTG . Any ROM should work, most likely you either are trying to use a device that draws too much power or your have a cable that's not Samsung compatible.

I am trying to put a 64gb strontium usb into my s3. I dont think it is the cable since I ordered one online that was meant for an s3. I see youtube videos of people using otg cables that get notifications that its connected even if theres nothing plugged into the otg cable. However I dont get any notifications or message with/without a usb device connected to the otg cable. I'll see if I can test the cable on my friends phone some later time to make sure if its the cable's fault. The main problem I have is whether I'm SUPPOSE to get a notifcation or not since people who posted in this thread are giving me mixed answers, some do get the notification, some do not. I'm just wondering if I'm the former or the latter or even if its just broken for sure.
I don;t think you get any notification unless a USB device is attached, I will check that tomorrow with my S3. Additionally, I don;t think the S3 can supply enough power for a USB device of more than 32 GB the power to the USB port is very limited on phones, about 100 ma vs. 500 ma for a standard PC USB port. You can check whats going on by looking at a LOGCAT on terminal if you are using a rooted ROM. This article / video may also be helpful.

NO, you only have to attach outside power for devices the S3 cannot power , like a hard drive. and the aux power can be your USB charger
For the comments made about a USB OTG not having enough power to run some devices. They make USB OTG cables which can do this due to an extra extension which allows for a power source to be used. The cable I have has a male and female plug. All I do is plug in the device which needs a little extra power to the USB port, attach the male cable to my phone, and plug a power cable, like the one that came with my phone, into the female plug. It allows me to run my older WD ext HD which need its own power source. Here are a few pics I took of my USB OTG cable. It works great and didn't cost an arm and a leg either.

I'm trying to find out if one of these OTG flash disks (sandisk.com home mobile-device-storage ultra-dual-usb-type-c) will work with the HTC 10 (I own the unlocked US version).
I tried an older micro-USB version of the OTG flash with a USB-C adapter but that did not show anything mounted when plugged in (the flash disk does work on a Galaxy S5 phone).
I'm probably wrong, but I believe it's a Type C thing. I tried my old OTG cable with adapter on my phone with a couple of USB sticks, nothing. I tried it on my tablet (Type C) also nothing.
Are the adapters OTG-capable? Like this?

Appreciate the links. That really helps.
Look for adapter that says 'OTG' capable. I think these are those non-conforming (wrong or no 56k pull up resistor) that is the Buzz for charging issues. The pullup tells that phone that it is to act as the slave, not host side, and current limit it's charging.

I'm having the same issue here. I bought a Kingstone OTG USB TYPE-C pendrive, 64gb. The system reads the files, but when I want to use those files, such as music, no apk will find them in the folder's directory. Is there any way to get it to work? I tried the same OTG USB TYPE-C on a Samsung Galaxy 5 and it does work automatically.
Thanks in advance.
i have some pro versions, but only two apps found usb stick and/or music on usb stick.

If you're rooted then use stickmount if not then I don't find it to be friendly.

Yes
I've tried a One plus 2 adapter and a normal one. Nothing is detected.
I 've tested with a third party adaptator (shipped on Amazon) and it work fine with OP3, but not with OP2 ...

Can you link the amazon page? Also which device did you test with.
It looks like only few tried otg since got a single reply so far!
Did you enable Otg in the Storage menu options? I noticed it is disabled by default. I haven't had a chance to try my otg drive yet.
UPDATE: yup, it works once you enable OTG in the Storage and USB menu options.

Yes, I have enabled otg option as I am aware of it in my opt. BTW which otg adapter worked for you?
I used a samsung otg flash drive and a generic usb-c to usb-a adapter.

Since one plus two adapter and Amzer adapter didn't work, can you give a link for the working adapter?

I did some more testing. It seems that the Apple USB-C adapter I am using (linked above), is actually ALSO an unadvertised OTG cable.
If I try to use a Tech-Matte USB-C to microUSB adapter tip connected to the microUSB side of my Samsung OTG drive, it doesn't work at all.
But any USB-A flash drive or SD reader, etc. that I connect to the apple adapter, works.
I just bought a 4-pack of cheap USB-C to microUSB tips from amazon, and none of them work to connect the microUSB side of my Samsung OTG flash drive. Interestingly, they all work fine to transfer files to my Mac and for charging, but the Tech-Matte tip only charges and does not sync (although it claims to be able to).

Thanks for the quick reply. I am also facing such problems. The two adapters I used are fine for charging and file transfer but NO OTG. I just want to rule out any defect in my OP3.

Are the adapters you are using specifically OTG-enabled or just pass-through?
While the Oneplus cable is OTG, you must be using some sort of microUSB to USB-C tip adapter, right? Maybe that is the problem, since none of my tip adapters work with OTG either.

No, they are otg enabled, BTW many others also reported no otg with One plus two adapter on OP3.
I can confirm that the Meenova Dash Type-C MicroSD reader works perfectly with OnePlus 3!

OnePlus adapter didn't work for me either. Worked perfectly with the OP2, but not on the OP3. And yes, I did enable OTG, no help. Not sure what the problem is. Going to wait a few days to see if anybody else has something to add.
I bought an adapter from amazon store, maybe is a little cheap, but It works fine with my mouse (bluetooth adapter for Trust GTX 120), but it won't work with any of my external hard drive with external power source (some 2.0, some 3.0), neither with more simple usb pen drive (2.0), neither with my ps4 controller.
If I try to connect one of my pen drive, with the OTG option active, ES File Explorer show me the pen drive and the dimension, total and free, but doesn't shows any files, and I cannot write on the pen.. is that a normal behavior for a not-working adapter or is a problem of different kind? The mouse is working so there is something that is working.. Am I wrong?
Edit1: I've tried with NTFS format, once even with fat32 and ex-fat, the ntfs one seems to be the best try
Edit2: OTG Troubshooter says that everything should be fine
Edit3: Done. I could read just one time the usb pen, the cause it's the cheap adaptor in the end

With the Apple adapter would I be able to use that with any usb drive or am I limited to 128 GB or something? I have all my movies on my computer but I'd like to be able to put them on a flash drive and then stream them from my phone to my Chromecast. I'd need at least a 256GB drive though.
I use a USB2.0 / USB-c stick.

In the TWRP thread it's been mentioned that OTG doesn't work yet.

With the apple adapter I linked to above, you can use any usb drive. I've successfully used it with multiple usb flash drives as well as a usb SD reader with a microSD card inside an SD adapter.
No OTG support - Oneplus Type C adapter
I am also tried to connect a usb drive using oneplus type C adapter. but it is not being detected.
