Hi I just rooted my S3 Rogers, and now I don't know what to do. I want to extend my battery life by controlling what is being used and so on. What is my next step?

Make a nandroid then flash a ROM. Stock jellybean m5 is good or if you dont mind loosing touchwiz there's plenty of aosp ROMs. Keep in mind some ROMs are not completely stable.
Make sure your model number is correct.
Then flash a custom rom provided in the development section.
Currently using slimbean 4.1.1 and i love it
Need battery control? Install SetCPU and setup some profiles to automatically underclock CPU if screen is off, etc... helps a lot more than having an app turn on and off wifi, data, etc....
No need to flash another ROM if you're not comfortable in doing so... Additionally, there are other alternatives to SetCPU, so go ahead and search from the play store...
If I want jellybean and I have an i747 Rogers Samsung Galaxy 3 which one would be best? That is stable?I looked at CM10 but apparently it needs to be more stable. What about EUROSKANK one? Jellybro or Jellyblack? Are those for my model?

I found that website great to start as following the video tutorials make it really easy. Make sure you look at the AT&T sections and watch the videos or read instructions 2 or 3 times before you actually execute anything.

Everyone's phone is different and will react differently to the same ROM. I believe aokp, slimbean, baked black bean, and liquid jelly are the most stable right now.
Hello all! I too just rooted my S3 (at&t) and was looking into flashing some ROMs. But I came across 2 threads about backing up the IMEI. is this necessary? If it is, both methods look to be a little confusing to follow.

I want jelly bean too but coming from a galaxy Nexus I can tell you that none of the roms out there are worth it. That is if you wanna keep all the cool samsung features there are the Drew Garen roms that are okay at best. But if you don't mind losing all the cool samsungness. There's the usual suspects cm10, aokp and so on. What I did is
Flash wanam light on top of stock for added features, switched my extsd with the internal for more memorie and ported Google now on ICS because svoice reeks. Removed the bloatware. I'm good for now until Rogers rolls out its own version of Jb.

The entire Touchwiz framework, for one...
Then there's the camera app, which is by far superior to just about any other camera app, Smart Stay, all the cool gestures/moves ... those are all features that you won't find in any custom ROM.
Not saying those are all "must have" features, it all depends on you, but the fact remains that they are exclusive to Samsung based ROMs

That's it
Personally like I said before coming from the gnex. If you want the pure google experience there's plenty to choose from. But I love the new touchwiz features and I'm sticking with. The JB leaks aren't on point yet. Which is why I'll wait for rogers's rollout. Or until a good stable leak comes along.

It sounds like you need a stock based ROM. There are leaks out of the official carrier releases. I recommend Drew's milestone 5 I've used it, its pretty stable, good battery life. I think the official jb update will come out by November.

I'm on at&t. I think all you have to do yo make it work on rogers is change an APN. (See development thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869300 )
Yes this ROM has all the Samsung features.
Make sure you back up your current setup, you might find it buggy and want to flash back.

ii've had a few phones before that i've installed custom roms on. and all these roms had bugs and made my phone behave slow and weird. i want to try a custom rom on the s3. but i dont want the same issues on it. i got some questions:
1. is stock better than custom rom for the s3?
2. are the custom roms SPECIFICALLY for the s3 bug free?
3. can you suggest which roms are the best for the s3 for battery life?
The rooms out there are great. If you want a stable Rom stick to the roms biased on ICS. I am waiting on official JB until I do a JB Rom
sent from my apple smashing s3
I haven't felt the need to flash a custom ROM, the stock ROM is just fine. One thing I did do is flash the latest Jelly Bean leak, pretty much everything works fine with it.
Often times we convince ourselves we are missing out on something, so we flash this or that rom, or hack, to try to get what we thought we might be missing, but don't see a big difference.
Your question alone shows hesitancy in doing something like flashing a custom rom. If you are worried about losing any features, or introducing some new bug, then stick with a stock rom.
But I highly recommend rooting, removing all the bloat, and at the minimum cleaning up your stock rom.

I recommend to root just for the ad blocking alone. Everything else is just a bonus.
But, the stock roms provide excellent battery life for what they are. The only reason I've rooted is so that I can flash ICS-like themes. Stock TWiz is atrocious-looking.

Ohh, cool. I'm downloading the image atm and was wondering, What's ODIN? Is that provided with the phone or do I have to dl that from somewhere?
Odin is the other part of Samsung phones that gives you full control.
I believe zedomax's video gives the link, but I will double check. There is a mobile Odin as well.

1. Define better.
2. Stock isn't bug free. But, there are ROMs with less bugs and ROMs with more. The devs will let you know in the first post.
3. AOSP and AOKP have the best battery. But, remember that the kernel you install plays a role.

Being an admitted flash addict when I switched from my vibrant to the s3 I was only going to root to get rid of bloat and install custom kernel as usual I spend way to much time flashing refreshing and tweaking what is already a great phone out of the box. So it is truly up to the individual. I will say there is great dev support and a lot of familiar faces from my previous device. Good luck in what ever you decide just make sure you do plenty of reading.

If you don't want trouble with apps not working, force closes, and want your samsung s-pen apps to work stick with stock roms. i've had 4.1.2 stock uploaded by teshxx and the thing is smoother than smooth with battery life much better than 4.1.1. I've had the phone since t-mo launch date so I can definitely notice the increase.
You don't have to wipe data either. Just go to recovery and wipe dalvic / cache and you're good to go. Good luck.

Personally, the only reason I would get a custom rom other than samsungs is for the ICS software buttons. Unfortunately, non of them have that option, even the Cyanogen roms. Yes I know we can modify a simple file in the note 2 and I have dont that before but it totally messes up the layout.

To answer a few of your questions. (Im updating thread now to)
1. I do plan on updating to 4.2 just need to update the code a bit and wait for the lockscreen to get ported.
2. Yes its based on AOKP 4.1.2
3. My rom is different because im going to take the time to keep it updated with anything new and im always constantly working on new ports to add to it. Its also more featureful, and its going to support toro and toroplus as soon as i get 4.2 working.
4. WHY YOU HATE AOKP SO MUCH? JK im using any base that i find most stable, im pretty sure im going to switch it for the 4.2 update since AOKP is constantly releasing updates for it and it will be hard to keep up with it.
5. Lag? I really have not noticed any lag besides the Xperia live wallpaper, thats sony's fault for not optimizing the app properly.
This ROM is running great. Loaded lean kernels latest stable 4.8 and all is good. A nice break from AOSP.

Oh, I've never heard of this then lol
The AOKP hate, its opinion but on both devices I've owned they been just so horrible and cheesy.. I don't like that swag button. The features are lacking. Honestly I'm on a stable base of 4.2.2, using Orca. The features are just amazing. I'm guessing because I tried the apks is that a lot of this framework doesn't really work for 4.2.2? I mean this is basically an Xperia ROM. I'm really impressed, I'm really hoping we can eventually get an actual port but I doubt it.
Secretly "I want a W8 port" love the style they use. Call me whacky lol.. But this is awesome you've made a breakthrough, or well your the only person who technically cares to do something like this. So I appreciate it this a lot man.
Edit: 4.1 doesn't bother me, we basically miss out on the status bar features. Just the base.

Just a quick note of congratulations and thanks, +Hyperrunner. I've been with Android since the first G1s were shipped, and this port reminds me of all the really inventive, well-done ports that we saw for the G1 back when other devices and models began to appear. I've been waiting for a really cool port to put on the GNex (which has had excellent but slightly bland firmware as stock from the beginning), and this Xperia port of yours really hits the spot. I think the AOKP base was a great choice. If it plays well with Linux Deploy and continues to be stable, this will become my primary ROM. Thanks a bunch, you deserve donations for your contribution to the Android community!
Thank you this ROM is pretty sweet love the look. Nice to have something other than stock for once

Which Android Version / Samsung Version Do You Run And Why?
I decided to try to make this to help prevent that "What ROM is best for me question" and try to save the mods some time so they can do more important things than close those threads.
So my question to you is, which android version do you run? 4.0.4? 4.1.2? 4.2.1? 4.2.2?
Stock Samsung, Stock AOSP? (AOKP, CM, Pacman, Paranoid Android) or MIUI (or any non stock android AOSP ROMs.)
If using Samsung stock or stock based ROMs, which do you prefer? The LJ7 update? MA6? MB1? Or the leaked MC3 update?
Be sure to post why you use this, and which ROM if you want. Be sure not to offend anyone. Maybe this can help people use a different version, try something new, or just to help people find out what they would like to run!
Let it begin!

To start off, I run stock 4.1.2 (because I love jellybean!) Rooted on MB1. I am still on MB1 because I prefer official updates over leaks. (no offense to sextape, his leaks are awesome!)
I love cm10 4.1.2 but I stay on stock because it is the most stable and I need my phone to work.
Sent From My Rooted, S-OFF'd Blackberry Curve using the iOS XDA Application for Android.
Stock rooted 4.1.1 (LJ7) but with the MC3 modem. I know 4.1.2 is out (MB1) but i like my setup the way it is and not really in the mood to have to redo all my lil hicks here and there for a minuscule upgrade to 4.1.2.
Stock is always best in my experience, best battery life in my opinion, great performance, i like TWiz features, plus whatever "bloatware" i don't like i can always disable or remove. Ran a few CM's and AOKP's in the past and came away so disappointed (though very grateful for the awesome development).
(Guess i could always nandroid, TiBackup as well just in case, flash back stock recovery, and accept the dang OTA nag-ware, but i'm that lazy, plus if it isn't broken, don't fix).

If you'd like I can give you a file to flash in recovery to get rid of the nag, or just tell you what to edit in the build.prop... pm if interested

TouchWiz based MB1 4.1.2 aka my own rom with mc3 firmware.
I too find stock based roms to be the most stable. Too much I'd have to give up with aosp.

After posting that, I found a (manual) way to do away with the OTA nag. Renaming a cert file in /etc and deleting the OTA file itself in /cache.
Thanks, anyway.

I will update to 4.1.2 when it is official and TPR is updated. I'm in no hurry anymore, the devs and RC's on this device are really amazing so I am perfectly satisfied with my device as is.
Odexed Blue SJ7 with SJ7 firmware.
That combination has worked well for me.
It's not as snappy as 4.2.2 aosp/aokp due to bloat, but those roms just can't figure out how make BT hands-free dialing to work. And while S-Voice had quirks, at least it always worked.

i only ever go back to TW to update prl and maybe play around with whichever TW rom i decided to use, but i have yet to find one that feels as good or looks as good as AOSP does to me

What controls (most) of the look is the launcher. If you just want an AOSP-type look but TW features you can install Nova or Holo launcher

Agreed, but I am still on CM10 LOL!
10.1 is too buggy for me, as I listen to A LOT of music, and I hear that is an issue there.
