You've mention u like doing it manually I assume that meant via terminal, there should be a tar if u search the threads or someone running Linux can package it.

I've searched the thread but the only one I've found was for an asus transformer. I don't know If it will work for the galaxy s3.
It says recovery touch 6.0.1.4.

Post 7, probably the easiest way to do it. Just type carefully.

Don't flash that unless u want a paper weight use the terminal instead this way u don't need to rely on a tar and it takes 2 seconds

I cant seem to find a flashable CWM 6.0.1.1 :crying:
As far as I know there is no CWM 6.0.1.1. Atleast not for the ATT version.
There are other Clockwork mods though, I will list them for you:
Normal Clockwork Recovery: http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.8.4.5-d2att.img
Touch Clockwork Recovery: http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.5-d2att.img
-- For these two clockwork mods to work they need to be installed in a special way. You must download one of the above, rename the file to recovery.img and put it on your main microSD card or internal memory.
Now, assuming you know how to use ADB,
Open up the cmd prompt and navigate to the ADB folder.
type adb shell
once in the shell type su
then type
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
And here is a link to the TWRP Recovery thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1793224
I hope this helps.

Please make sure your information is correct before posting. This is from the ROM manager website. I don't think it gets more official than this.
well, can't upload screenshot. Just google "ROM manager apk" and it will get you to the official page.

I don't understand where you are going with that? The site, does not have the touch version *anymore* tho it did a few weeks before when i installed it. i was asking if anyone knew of an update in the near future.
Wasn't aimed at you in particular Eatonjb. I just saw a couple conflicting posts offering less than correct info. that's all.
You can b/u to your external sd card with 5.8.4.5. I didnt see that option w/other versions.

Hi, I have a SG3 from Rogers Canada , already root and CWM 5.???? Is the version 6 is compatible and how I do the upgrade?
Thank you
Daniel
You need to do a little research before posting..... the thread right under yours is about the same thing!
Anyway here is the answer but search next time
Download your version of cwm there
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Place it at the root of your sdcard and rename it recovery.IMG
Download terminal emulator from the play store. Run the terminal
type: su (press enter)
Then type: dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 (press enter)
Type everything right. If you get the last number wrong, you get a brick.
I did this on my phone to install cwm touch without any issues

I'm inclined to agree with the post above yours about reading a little more. Its all over this forum that all the phones hosted in here are the same EXCEPT the modems, therefore the recoveries are interchangable between the different carriers. If this doesn't clear things up then I would suggest you not flash your phone.

This sentence prove you are not ready to flash a new recovery. I don't say this to be mean, I'm sure you don't want to brick your phone! Read some more in the general section, it may help you.
However if you want to safely upgrade your recovery: you can download ROM manager from the play store to get cwm or goo manager to get twrp.

Hi, I was wondering how to remove and update clockwork recovery. I do not want to un-root my phone, I just want to remove and update clockwork recovery because of an issue.
No need to remove it, just look for an updated version to the one you have and install it.

Slight problem, when I get it from the site it comes as .img. However, when I click PDA on odin it does not show the file. How is it that the people who make it give you a file that cannot be opened in odin while a file I get from some random person can?
If you have the ClockworkMod ROM Manager app, it lets you update your recovery to the latest version. Which is still 6.0.1.2 still. Much easier than flashing or anything else.

I might switch. How do you remove CWM though?
Just download GooManager from the play store and open it, I think then you hit the menu key on your phone and hit "install recovery script". It will do everything for you.
I went to TWRP after CWM as well, and will never go back either!

Third, I use this when I need to get under the chassis:

I have and still use both Wug's and mskip's (Mark Skippen) GNex root tool kits. Wug's has gotten my phone back after my stupidity may times. Just Google Wugfresh tool kit or mskip has the third sticky in this form.
I realize that there are lots of people who despise the 'one click root' methods. It's what I use and like.

For the op:
Instead of using a one click method, please take the time to learn how to do the steps manually. This way if a problem ever arises you will understand what needs to be done to fix it. Once you understand, using one click or tool kits out of lazyness is OK

Good. But, if you (already unlocked) only want to root:
2) download supersu cwm install .zip, push it to /sdcard/;
3) fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img - why? No need. Just boot nameofrecovery.img ('fastboot boot nameofrecovery.img')
4) since you booted the custom recovery, and already have supersu zip on /sdcard/, just flash said .zip
Sent from my i9250
This rooting technique Finally worked you will need three files
1) SDK TOOLS from
2) recovery.img from
3)MRKREHANROOT from
you should have unlock boot loaders USB drivers installed and should be on android 4.3
copy mrkrehanrehanroot3.1.zip in sdcard
be in fastboot mode ie switch off your device and hold both volume up and down and power button together and keep your device connected to PC
Extract the sdktools and place the revovery.img in that folder
then with one finger on shift key right click in an empty space in the folder and select open command window here
then type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
it will flash recovery to your device
in recovery no need wipe anything install the zip mrkrehanroot3.1.zip
and reboot
download any app that requires root access and check for example root explorer
it should ask root acess
in this way you have rooted your device
Keep the thanks rolling and follow me on

Titanium Backup is an example of such an app. It may incorrectly detect the path to your internal storage for backups, and thus crash on backup/restore. You can fix this by going into preferences and selecting a folder under /storage/emulated/legacy as backup/restore path, not under /storage/emulated/0.
