We need an NFC revolution! - NFC Hacking

Hey all!
I love NFC, just as much as you - seeing as you're reading this in the NFC section, I assume you use NFC regularly. I think it'll be fantastic when it's main stream, however for it to become a truly mainstream it needs more data type. just like you get vCards, URL's, SMS's etc - I think we need more help from Google, Microsoft and all the hardware vendors - along with the NFC forum itself - to help extend NFC's capabilities.
Sure we on XDA know how to extend it's abilities - either by hacking it or knowing which app lets you do a certain additional function. Unfortunately normal members of the public won't know about the XDA way or about the apps. For example the problem is you can write an NFC tag to connect to a a device to a particular wifi network, however you need the app that wrote the tag or another app that understands what to do with the tag for it to work. Now the problem is that your guests probably won't have the app installed, so you'll have to connect them manually or download the app over 2G/3G/4G and depending on network strength - just like my area - could take a long time!
What came first, the chicken or the egg? What came first the wifi or the adoption of more standard / capabilities, across OS's / vendors ?
There are plenty more examples, but this is the most useful and self explanatory I can think of.
Please, please, please read my blog post about this and if you so wish, sign the petition, message the NFC Forum telling them to get their butt's into gear - message Google and the Android dev's do what you can to make NFC better and help it's adoption :good:

As much as it pains me to say it...we need Apple to implement native NFC support in iOS. I was really excited to see Passbook (or whatever its called) and was nearly positive this meant NFC support for the iPhone 5. Unfortunately, not this go round. It's ok though, wait a couple iterations of iOS/iPhone and NFC will finally be deemed acceptable for the public...magically...revolutionarily.

I know, and I think why the heck should we wait? Apple might only bring NFC with the iPhone 7. What's the harm in trying to change it now?

I haven't used it much, but I am for interested. I guess I need a better understanding of its purpose and how I can use it in everyday situations. I already use wifi-direct for a bunch of transferring.

Yeah, they need something the can control - they need to devise a way to make money out of it otherwise it's not in their interest.
I know this is XDA Developers and we can make NFC do what we want, but we all have people in our lives who won't even use NFC because they don't know about it or know what it can do which is why I'd like us to make a change at the OS level on behalf of all of our non-technical friends and family. Let's get the big players like Google, Microsoft and anyone else that's already using NFC in their products to want to make a change - for Grandma

Lets be honest guys, the majority of people around us have iPhones, mainly 4s's. Imagine if all of them had NFC and we could all play nicely sharking playlists and sending phone numbers to eachother?

NFC is the next big thing just give it time. once it rolls out. more in new devices we shall see. it's development grow more and any phone worth it's salt will have to have it

I agree - a revolution. Right now, when I mention NFC to most people they give me that "HUH???" expression. Then I have to explain what it is and then I have to give them examples of what it can do. Seems like almost no one knows what it is or has any idea all the cool things you can do with it.
What we need is a Samsung or Google or HTC to run a commercial that features people using NFC - with tags to automate stuff at home/work, with Google Wallet to pay for stuff, other things. Then the average person would be like "oh I know what that is - I saw it on a commercial"
Unfortunately right now it seems like it's just us tech geeks who know about it...

Well, we've already got a very usefull feature for NFC like very fast files transfer, the only what we need is more phones that support it. It will be as famous as bluetooth i think hopefully

How much data can actually be transfered via NFC? I always thought the bandwidth for transfers was rather small, which is why most items transfered are under 144 bytes.
For larger transfers wouldn't using NFC for the handshake then Bluetooth for data transfers be better?

I have to admit I am one of those people who do not know about its capabilites. I know what it is and have it activated on my phone, but what can I do with it...I do not know besides I think you can tranfer pictures, phone numbers and stuff.
Can someone maybe explain it in more detail and tell us about its uses? Maybe I should have done a search about NFC (Near Field Communications) before I wrote this.
P.S. I wish more people would put the acronym meaning after the acronym, like I did above, in this forum...ooh that gives me an idea!! (light in head goes off!! lol)

I cannot tell you if there is a limit in filesize, but since the biggest NFC tags you can buy at the moment (afaik) are 8kb, anything beyond 1mb is most likely to take to long to be economic.

Windows Phone 7 Community Wish List

For those who want to voice their votes to Windows Phone 7 Community Wish List please do so at,
http://windowsphone7community.uservoice.com/forums/84435-general
Keep them votes coming.
I have voted on a few of them for example Tethering, turn-by-turn, USB Storage etc.
http://windowsphone7community.userv...ral/suggestions/1194783-custom-hubs?ref=title
Do Want!!
I hope MSFT listens to few of these and atleast get the top ones implemented in the first update.
they dont have smartdj for wp7 zune in there?
Then add it to the suggestions.
I can't believe "multitasking" is so low in number of votes, even below "make internet search provider cnfigurable"
With Flash and copy/paste already announced as coming, I thought they'd be off the list.
I think the way people are voting is get the most important things out of the way to even make the device comparable to rivals in terms of functionality.
I can wait for multitasking for the second update.
I think IE 9 Mobile in 2011 is a priority. We don't need any plugins if we have HTML5.
I personally doubt that this wishlist is seriously used for updating the system, anyway i added 3 of my wishes. One of the most important wish is to integrate RSAP. I wonder why only Nokia supports such a protocol and i don't want to put such a brick in my car just to be able to make phonecalls
Cool. Good idea
I just suggested the implementation of a Slide keyboard, just like Swype...
I don't think that this wishlist is used but I got the url from one of the MS forums where MVPs were looking at the list figuring out what users wanted and it's worth a shot. Not going to cost any of us anything.
I get the impression Microsoft don't care. Every suggestion I've made to Microsoft so far has either been dismissed as irrelevant or aggressively attacked.
On a number of occasions, their Mods have been outright rude to me, one of them even implying that I was an opportunist, out for a quick cash grab with no intention of putting any effort into my apps.
Who ever is in charge of PR for WP7 should get the sack.
I see your point, I have posted many suggestions or things that users have been craving for years to deaf ears. Many things on the other hand just gets listed with a lot of case since it fits with their "MODEL".
Again, can't hurt trying.

I might have missed something as I've not checked if I can set this on my server, but I seem to have lost the ability to tell my phone not to sync emails with Exchange at certain hours of the day?
In 6.5 I could set Peak and Off-Peak hours and then tell it how to get emails at those times, so I would have push email between 8am and 11pm and nothing while I'm sleeping.
If I'm not missing something, then this really needs to be added back in please!
If it's not in the suggestions list then add it please.
MIght sound trivial but it's something I miss so I'm going to add a sleeptimer for Zune. ye never know eh!

One app that you should avoid

I recently tried the Graphic ly comic reader app in the Windows Phone Marketplace. Hoping to find a comic reader as good as droid comic viewer I found myself very very disappointed. The controls are shoddy, pinch to zoom is flakey and you have to zoom all the way out to turn the page. This is a far cry from the original video that was shown to consumers.
I understand that newly released products are no always perfect so I figured I would share my concerns with the developer. Their response was shocking and disappointing.
We would like to improve our WP7 app much more in the future, but I
will be straight with you: due to the low sales of the windows 7
phones we have put the improvement of the app lower on our priority
list than the continual improvement of our other apps.
In the meantime: please check out our adobe air application and our
new web application at:*http://graphicly.com/
Any comics that you buy in any of our applications can be read on any
of our other applications. *Your graphicly login should work on any of
them.
Thanks

Now I know business is business but to release a bad product in the first place is unacceptable especially when the app merely needs some tuning. Due to the lack of planned future support I can only suggest that you guys stay away. Here is hoping that robot comics releases one on WinPho 7.
That is such a load of happy horse****. There are many apps where the developers are frequently updating and providing excellent communications between themselves and the users.
When WP7 takes off - and it will - I hope that many others are aware of the developer's attitude and shut them out. Let the money go to another comic app.
I was very dissapointed with the graphic.ly app, especially compared to what we've seen before. This attitude isn't going to get them any customers. If they're not going to put any effort in the phone app, I don't see any point in buying comics from them or getting their adobe air app.
Shame, i was hovering over it recently....
Thanks for the heads up. I like to stay away from those types of attitudes of devs and updates/support. "EA ruined a good brand after Westwood"
If it's not important enough for them, guess it's not important enough for me to use.

That's depressing. Low WP7 sales volume not good. Hopefully this app dev is just a WP7 hater.
Considering that, at least in the US, folk generally wait until their account is due for a subsidized upgrade before getting a new phone (mine just happened to drop in late November ), it makes sense that sales for WP7 haven't exploded yet. I could see holding off on making an app until WP7 grows in market share, but to release a shoddy app, charge for it, and then not support it just because it's not a cash cow yet is simply horrid customer relations. Seeing as the potential dollar is apparently all that matters to these jokers, I'll be sure and speak with my wallet, and mark this one off of the potential to-buy list.
Hilarious. TBQH.

How would they know this when no one else seems to have this info yet? Perhaps they are basing it on the low sales of their crappy app?
iirc i read some developers are complaining because they have no way to know how much they are selling, and microsoft will start paying in february... so how does this guy know that they are not doing ok?
i call bul****
installed it just to rate it poorly and uninstall it. If you are not going to support your work then don't release it in the marketplace.
OP, I would forward that email to MS support so they know the dev isn't willing to support their app.

After emailing I recieved some very good news.

Sorry about that message from Graphicly - it was wrong.
Hi,
Im Micah, CEO of Graphicly. I am unsure of who would provide you that message, that we are not supporting the Win7 Phone application, but it is wrong.
We continue to develop and maintain the applications that our community desire.
The WP7 app that we put out was our v1. We are working to improve the reading experience and other aspects of the application, as we know its it not perfect yet.
Of the applications we have, our Adobe AIR application has been around the longest and has the most development hours into it.
As the WP7 phone continues to grow, we will continue to develop against it.
If you have any questions, or want to discuss this further, I can be reached directly at 720-248-8499 or via email at [email protected] (GTALK too).
Again, I apologize for the confusion, I will make sure that everyone on the Graphicly team understands our product roadmap.

Hopefully someone from XDA can validate, but if this is indeed true I thank you for clearing things up Its nice to see brands out there connecting with their customer and stepping up to the bat like this.
Hopefully we'll see the app improved! You could always open it up on CodePlex and let XDA hackers have at it!
It is indeed me - How would you like to verify it? I can give you my mom's phone number... How about this - we have promo codes enabled in the AIR app. Use "techcrunch" (no quotes) and get a free comic. We used it for an old techcrunch article, and I think its still alive. Then when you use the WP7 phone, it will be in there, and you can give me solid feedback on the mistakes we made.
Tell me more about CodePlex. I would be happy to let the community at it. We are doing something similar with our Win7 app. Building out APIs that are secure and can be built on is a personal passion of mine.

I did not want to post the name but originally I wrote the email in reply to the email I received about you guys releasing a Google web app to this emai "[email protected]"
I received a reply back from a Audrey Zarr stating what I posted. I sent her a polite email expressing my dismay with that type of business attitude and never got a reply back. I certainly wasn't trying to slander your company but knew it would be best to share this info on the web.
I understand that this is a v1 app and I would have been perfectly happy with a "we are working to improve this app" type of answer. Instead I was given the previously posted information. Currently your app is sitting at 1 star, I would hope you guys would want to improve that. Best of luck on your next release.
yeah... [email protected] is the reply email on our newsletter. Audrey is one of our engineers, and is tasked with answering questions about bugs, issues, feature requests, etc.
Your question is quite valid, and in some ways, her response (we are a small company, and we have to focus on the products our community want) is correct. Except the part about us abandoning development on the WP7 app.
A couple of other points (really just FYI). The video from the MIX conference was a proof of concept. We were asked to show off what Deep Zoom would look like in our reader, and so we did. As the months passed and the WP7 software progressed, it became clear that we wouldnt be able to have deep zoom on the finished app.
Other issues: The dev phone we had was a samsung, which is not even one of the release phones. It made things like having pinch/zoom work properly really tough.
So, do we want to make the app better? Of course we do. We want all of our apps to be solid and work at a high level. I believe that the WP7 platform has potential.

I understand that there were time constraints but phone operating systems as of recent seems to lean on their marketplace for success. A bunch of half baked apps won't appeal to anyone.(see palm) That was my main reason for reaching out. I also understand focusing on what the market wants, Microsoft has deep pockets and this OS will eventually be pretty successful. I will spend my money and time on apps that were well made and supported from the get go. As a vendor of comics I am sure your business relies on repeat business.

Bluetooth Tethering PLEASE!!!!!

I don't know if this topic has been bandied about on this forum. I've searched quite a bit and I haven't found anything. Is there any reason why MS has not released BT PAN on our stacks? I know the carriers have the ultimate say on methods used for tethering but not even the factory unlocked models have this wonderful feature. Wi-Fi tethering is nice and all, but it drains batteries like nobody's business, and if you're tethering to a tablet now you have two batteries dying a quick death. One of my favorite features of Windows Mobile after version 5 aku 3 was the internet sharing through either USB or BT. The speeds over BT were the same as any Wi-Fi tethering since it is the phone's same 3G signal anyway. Bluetooth tethering consumes a lot less power than Wi-Fi and with the PAN profile we also get the benefit of file transfer. ARGH!!!!! I hate having to carry an old POS WM6.5 device in my bag for the oft times I need to jack up my laptop when I'm out in the field. If anybody with any kind of influence with MS is reading, can you also throw in the MAP profile while you're at it? Please? Pretty please? With sugar......

Dude, come on. It is widely accepted that a BT radio consumes less power than a Wi-Fi radio. No, I don't have the back-up because it is widely accepted as much as anything else. Do you also need proof if someone tells you the speed of light is approximately 186,000 fps? You must also be one of those idiots that want to see Obama's birth certificate. BT PAN is a very useful profile and I'm not the only one who would prefer to have it. Search around other platforms and you'll see for yourself, or do you want me to do the work for you as well? Would you like links or do you prefer pictures so you don't have to actually read.

It's cool, sitizenx posted my partial post in big red bold letters and I realized my mistake and I owned up to it and clarified. I'm not perfect, only my teacher is (Jesus). Enough off topic here. Double thread anyway. Thread closed.

Widespread implementation of NFC?

When will the widespread and accepted use of NFC in America happen? We've had it on phones for about 2 years now but it's still not implemented fully. Almost all new android and a few WP8 phones are getting it, but it still doesn't have great usage. Among us technologically advanced people it has uses but what about everyone else? Wallet seemed strong. It with everyone blocking it it's iffy. The s beam commercial is helping but it's still not @ it's potential.

IMO once the carriers get sorted with NFC mobile payment. and integrated into our public transit systems it will start really kicking off. At least thats how it is in Japan. Unfortunately the average consumer wouldnt likely take advantage of the more complex, yet outstanding features. Even something such as tasker integration seems too difficult for most consumers. However, add wallet less payment and instant rewards, they'll be all over it.

Widespread acceptence is quite a broad request. Once peer-to-peer mode is widely available on handsets the standard will likely be used to exchange data or play simple games with each other. Exploring reader functionality for non geeks will probably be more widespread over time. Features like business cards etc may take of as well as other cool stuff that is done via tasker. You always have to see though that making stuff with tasker etc requires a bit of knowledge by the user hence why there are many users that may never use nfc with its potential because they just don't know / understand how to do it. Not every smartphone user is sufficient in programming etc. (A fact that is forgotten by many devs these days it seems to me.)
Use cases that will require card emulation will take quite some time though. Number one reason is that manufacturer and service providers try to block each other. Number two reason is that there is no standard out there yet. Wanna use Isis? Well buy an Isis ready phone (those are smartphones with a special version of the OS) etc. Right now every NFC payment and physical access service requires a different service provider specific OS. As long as this does not change I doubt its going to get widely spread.
At least 2 or 3 more Years would be my vote. So I take 2014
NFC
Honestly, I just found out about wallet a few months ago, sadly enough. Sounds like a promising technology though. The GS3 commercials were classic in illustrating its....capabilities...
I don't think, NFC will see any widespread uses anytime soon.
Configuring your phone by tapping it to a tag is a geeky thing to do. Most people are not geeks. They either go with a mediocre "one size fits all" setup or will manually adjust their devices whenever needed to avoid the learning curve and the additional costs of programming tags.
Wireless money transfer? Dream on! That's the wet dream of the banks. Who are interested in putting transaction fees on every purchase. Only problem: even non geeks understand that paying by just holding the phone next to a reader will make it subject to e-pickpocketing.

Dude, most stores here in NYC (including Macy's, which has non-geeky people) have Google Wallet compatible card readers. There are Samsung ads on my campus and in the city on telephone booths that say "Tap your phone for free music/eBooks/videos". It's spreading slowly but surely. It's available on pretty much all phones coming out now, and stores and other places of interest are starting to take notice. I mean look at the latest Samsung ads. People with iPhones keep asking me if they can do "the bumpy thing" to send things to each other.

Yes, NYC, but we were talking about widespread adoption, which to my understanding means: pretty much everywhere, not just in the hip places. Around here, I see little about NFC technology. In fact, NFC was one of the reasons for me to get a Nexus 7. I was rather disappointed when I found out that non of the major hardware stores seem to carry them. Personally, I think that availability of tags is a major factor for achieving a breakthrough. That "bumpy thing" is cool in the ads (isn't it nice how marketing is able to play us by appealing to our primal instincts?) but in reality is stopped in it's tracks if you don't have compatible devices.
It'll be adopted widespread when iPhones finally adopt it..then everyone will act like apple invented the best thing since sliced bread and fall down and worship the all powerful "i"

True. The least common denominator.

Thesis Topic

Greetings all
im currently looking for a thesis topic to graduate, and im interested in NFC
My supervisor asked me to prepare a proposal about the subject, he suggested that i choose an "application" or a certain aspect of NFC to study, i have an idea about maybe doing a comparing study about NFC Security techniques and methods, since one payment is probably the most famous application of NFC, however i cant really say that i know much about NFC, in fact i barely know anything about it, i'm a telecom student, and i'd appreciate if some of you can point me to some reading material or give me some pointers that wud help me preparing the proposal and eventually the thesis itself.
thanx in advance and best regards to all
Well since nobody else has replied to this, I'll help you out. NFC is short for near field communication. NFC builds on RFID systems that allows two way communication between end points. RFID was first patented in 1983. That's pretty general, I know a lot about NFC so if you have any specific questions I can help you there.
For more general information I'd recommend http://www.nearfieldcommunication.org
Good luck with your thesis my friend!
Just don't say you got help from a 15 year old...

Security seems to be a main concern this days. NFC advantages are aplenty, however no one is really concerned about the security aspect of it. i.e. hacking NFC or being able to track a person by their NFC capable phone etc. etc.
I would show that NFC can be easily read for instance passports, credit cards etc... Show the techniques used to circumvent reading i.e. hashing, pin codes.
In the end describe a theoretical approach that it can make nfc's security better.
In the end you just need to be able to defend your approach against other professors so keep in mind you need to be well aware of the subject.
This is my idea and this is how i would approach the subject. Im sure there are hundreds of other applications out there that you can ellaborate on.
Sounds cool though good luck.
thank you all
@Truitt.Jack its not a problem for me to get help from a fifteen years old, if you are good at what you do
who cares how old are you
@ Sofitos : thanks for the advice, i'll look into it
