My phone is actually quite laggy now. Sometimes flicking between the menus lags so I have to restart my phone.
Also, high end processes such as the game asphalt lag A LOT.
Whats up? I thought this was "the most powerful phone in the world"?
+1 finding mine to lag a lot as well........
Mine also becomes increasingly laggy, the only thing that sort of works is using advanced task killer to stop the all the background running programs, some were running on mine i dont even remember opening!
Not finding this at all. I think it's certain apps that cause it as my phone is practically full of apps barely any space left but still not laggy.
EDIT: No task manager on mine either.
i have around 40 apps including asphault and sygic navigation and i nevered faced lag in my desire....!!!! the only time i restart the phone is when i have all of them running and cause i don't want to kill them with task managers i restart in order for it to close them itself.
Sorry but I must say, I'm a bit disappointed. The Phone is Luggy.
And I don't even dare to compare it to Iphone (And Yes I know it boosts more then twice the resolution of the Iphone), but still When I play Asphalt It looks like a Pentium 3 running - Crysis.
So... "Fastest Phone ever made"??? Maybe only on paper...
Asphalt for some reason does not run well on the Desire, the game is butter smooth on my Milestone. Let's hope they optimize it for the Desire as well, the game is quite good.
The phone does get very laggy unless you use a task manager. For a snapdragon powered phone it doesn't seem to be very "Snappy". It's seriously bad in the "All Programs" menu especially.
As for gaming, the milestone will unfortunately always be better than the Desire. It has an OMAP/PowerVR CPU/GPU combo (The same as the Nokia N900) which outclasses the Snapdragon in 3D gaming but is slightly slower in CPU intensive apps.
I've been attacked with huge consistent lag since 2 days now (unknown before) but it was the miscall app and app organizer running in the background causing it (as well as voraciously depleting the battery life) so not a problem here.

I thought SGX540 that's superior than iphone4 would run new games without any lags but for new games such as 9mm and let's golf 3 i've face many stutter on those games. I'd like to ask others that you have problem like me or not ? or maybe next time i'd go back to ios or waiting ice cream sandwich. Those games are smooth in iphone4 but not in galaxy s that has superior GPU.
I didn't play to 9mm and I just tested Lets Golf3, but yeah... it's not strange to have some small lags sometimes.
If gaming on the phone is very important for you I suggest to use samsung roms and not cm7 or miui.
And yeah, maybe you should have buy an iPhone, Android still can beat iOS when it comes to games
im currently on JVT.firmware

I notice the lags too. I strongly believe that the lags are caused primarily by low ram. On Froyo, I never had lags in games, and they were all super smooth. But on gingerbread, after a few hours of usage, the ram drops below 100mb, and the games will lag. The games don't lag on a fresh boot. Hence, the problem is not with the gpu, but with the fact that 512mb of ram is just not enough for gingerbread. If you want to remove the lags in games as well as in the phone interface, I recommend that you flash a 2.2.1 rom. ZSJPK was one of the best roms I've ever used.
Yeah, sgx540 is better than the 535 use in iphone 4, but it's all about drivers and optimisations. And we can't deny that Apple is doing a wonderfull job with iOS.

indeed, i also think the lags are caused by lack of ram...
when you move the camera around in the game it sometimes hangs and when the textures are in RAM, you can continue playing without fps drops or lag
a tip before you start playing:
- root your phone and install "autostarts" to disable all crap which boots up with android
- reboot phone
- after booting go to task manager and cleanup ram
- go to settings => applications => active services and kill unnecessary processes. (for example, when you close the facebook app, it still keeps running as a service, sometimes almost using 50MB ram)
i reduced lag in 9mm alot with the method above...
Is there a custom rom that has a very low ram consumption? that would fix this issues

how many ram does system take with that rom?
For games playing, 2.2.1(JSD) is a Must!

Reboot my phone. Clear memory with task manager. Kill active services... just to game? Why not just close some apps? Common sense, people. It's a brilliant thing.

Yes, it's called V6 Supercharger Script. It's like a ROM, but it's actually just a script... and you can run that script on whatever ROM you want. What it does, is it lets you pick a number. That number decides how much free RAM you'll have. Then, like magic, you just have it.
There hasn't been a single piece of good advice in this thread...

I can't use supercharger with semaphore kernel, and CF bigmem settings (98 mb) doesn't solve the performance issue.

No, custom roms, even so called simple and bare ones, use more ram than stock roms. I recommend ZSJPK 2.2.1, which has about 180mb of ram on boot, and an average of 120-140mb or ram after two days' usage.

Then you do it without the script. What's the problem here? I have over 2,000 games on my phone. And no, that wasn't a typo. None of them lag.

because android automatically closes apps when RAM is low and services always keep running in the background, whether you need them or not.
why would you let a service use your ram when you don't even need it? THAT is common sense.
bigmem kernel may help? its what i use

Learn some manners, people here are just trying to help. Have you actually tried the two games mentioned in op, you tell us you have 200 games installed is 9mm and lets golf included in these?

I've rolled back to froyo and now without apps in the background i0ve about 140mb of ram used, and now 9mm goes smooth. I'm not moving from froyo any more.
Also, now the battery lasts in 6 hours of screen usage, and with jvt only 4 hours

Are they though? When I help someone out, I tell them correct information. If I don't know the correct information, I don't tell them anything. Why? Because incorrect information is worse than not helping at all. Few people in this thread have given remotely acceptable advice. No one needs to do a 3-step process, including rebooting your phone, just to play games; likewise, no one needs to downgrade to Froyo in order to game either.
I have Let's Golf! 3D installed currently, but I don't have the most recent revision of 9MM—although I have played it in the past. I have my phone's CPU and GPU overclocked, like I'm sure many of us do here, and I can play both without noticeable lag. I didn't have to reboot my phone to play them. I didn't have to uninstall apps to play them. I didn't have to flash an entirely new ROM to play them. And I certainly didn't need to stand on one leg with the phone above my head to play them.
Bad advice is just bad.

I posted what helped reducing lag in 9mm on my phone.
if you don't need the help i posted, that's too ****ing bad. the fact this topic was started shows people are facing the same problem with lack of usable ram memory for 9mm.
looks like you have some sort of magic phone with unlimited amounts of ram memory that never lags
the reason why i told him to reboot his phone is because ram usage is much less in most cases, right after booting up.
and btw, next time do some more effort instead of posting one line if my information is not correct
My xperia play has problems running certain games lika FIFA 12 and other downloaded games, constantly lagging in the middle of gameplay.I've looked around certain threads and most users don't face similar problems.
Now I've tried overclocking, deleting lots of bloatware and still have this problem.I then found out that the framerate drops a lot when i tested its graphic performance.
Is there a way to prevent the framerate to drastically fall when I play games like FIFA 12 because it's lagging really bad.Sorry if what I posted makes no sense.I just wanted my games to run the way they are supposed to.
Ive had similar issues now, the first 3 weeks was flawless no lag, nothing, recently it has been lagging a bit, but it happens some times... i jus try and close any programs running in the background and free the RAM.
Even though I've freed so much ram and even overclocked I'm getting the same issue.Been using for 5 months now and this started happening since the 3rd week as well.Since then I've been trying to reinstall the firmware, the apps, everything but to no avail.

You shouldn't have to do all that. It sounds like there maybe is something wrong with your play.
A few things:
1. Clear your text messages. Having excessive messages jams this thing up quick, I have my limit set at 50 per convo and I delete any conversation I'm not actively participating in for a day or two
2. DO NOT KILL TASKS. This only makes the phone run worse. When you're playing a game its starting tasks from apps that want to update or whatever in the background which causes lag. It will take a few days to calibrate itself back but never kill tasks. The phone will allocate all the memory needed for whatever you're trying to run, this is not Windows you don't need to clear memory.
3. If you haven't already get yourself a Sandisk Class 4 memory card (Do not get a class 10). This is generally considered the optimal SD card for this device.
Doing these things only, my play is bone stock, WITH bloatware on it and all, and I only suffer very very very occasional stutter but otherwise no lag whatsoever.

Thanks I'll take it that to consideration. As I keep rebooting, repairing the phone as in reinstalling the software via SEMC,my messages are pretty much empty, removed bloatware, didn't run any task killer after advice given. And should I not use supercharger at all?I've been using it for awhile and it'll be a hassle removing it though it doesn't cause problems and does not improve performance significantly.
BTW,is the memory card an important factor here? I mean does it improve the gaming performance?I am actually having my games stuttering very very often and not actually lagging,so I don't think my phone's actually experiencing problems as suspected. Is the memory card that comes with the play any good?

With the factory SD card as well as my original replacement 16gb Class 2 card I noticed lag in games. Once I replaced it with a Class 4 card the lag was gone. The whole game, and not even the whole level loads to memory, the game still reads data from the SD card while the game is playing.

You don't need to clear out RAM with Android, you don't even need a task killer. Android manages its memory for you. Its possible you're experiencing lag because Android is getting screwed up by tasks being stopped and started. Continually killing apps can even corrupt them eventually (happened on my Motorola Droid)
I have the same amount of free ram as you right now, and I never ever stop or kill tasks, and my phone is bone stock. By lag are you getting an occasional stutter (like at the title screen of some games) or does the actual game run jerky. I get a title screen stutter on some games, but who cares. VERY occasionally the game stutters for 1/2 a second, it doesn't do much if anything in terms of playability.
I'm honestly at a loss, maybe your phone is defective, otherwise this should have stopped the issue.
Very occasional stutter in game actually. This happens so occasionally in the game that the controls responded a few seconds later after each moment it stutters, resulting in my character usually making an extra move which sometimes costs me.Everything else runs fine.By that I mean normal applications such as the android market and whatnot.Obviously, I wouldn't care much if the phone stutters during the startup of the game only.

Hi guys,
as most of you have experienced, Grand theft auto 3 came out for Android I have been waiting for it quite long, so I am very excited that it's finally here now.
I downloaded the game, and started playing it. It is playable, but it runs very snappy, laggy. I am playing with like 10 fps, wich is kinda slow..
What I tried to fix it:"
-Install the Blackice AOSP rom, so see if there's improvement.
-OC my phone to 1,5 gHz
- play it with Chainfir3D, and put the textures on low.
Like I said, the game is playable, but I think I can get more out of my phone..
Maybe I am wrong, and is this all I can get, or maybe there will come updates soon to optimize the game for this phone..
Let me know if you have any solution!
Thx
That's weird, I'm running it on Ultimate ace with pretty good fps (>30), maybe try changing the CPU governor to performance, or check if there's any battery saver enabled which could affect performance...
Thx for your fast response!
Unfortunately, this didn´t seem to help.. I even decreased the texture quality with Chainfire 3d, but this only gave me 2-3 frames win haha.
I don´t think it is because of the rom, since mine is as simple as you can get ;O
Do you have any other solution I could try?
Maybe try redownloading, perhaps you've got a bad file?
Im using the Black Ice Rom but Game runs quite good. It isnt that fluent but looks pretty good though. But I cant play the game properly. My DHD freezes and reboots after playing about a minute. I turned off undervolting, but problem didnt go away
Can someone upload there handling.cfg plz, I downloaded one for the SE arc and now the cars fly when accelerateing

Then I turn the screen off for 30 sec and turn on again and the
Game work great again. Any idea why?
I think it happened because of overheat.
same here, with V6 supercharger script installed
however without it, game crashes to homescreen during loading
suspect this is caused by insufficient RAM
I'm deeply discrepancy disappointed with this phone, his performance are so weak.
