Hi everyone!
I currently have the Jellybean build that was leaked for the Bell SGH-I747m a couple weeks ago, and am noticing a lot of bugs and problems that were not in ICS.
Would it be possible to do a titanium backup now on the phone (I am rooted) and then flash with odin ICS stock, then re-root, then restore the titanium backup, all without losing any apps or games and their saves?
I know upgrading with TitBak is no problem but I am really not sure about downgrading.

Should work fine. Do not restore any system data.

to be safe I recommend to flash an interesting ics rom and keep your root or get a cm10 mod

So would that mean that I lose all settings and configurations I made to the device? Or will I keep some of the settings like ringtones and default apps, etc....? And would I just click backup all user apps instead of backup all userapps+sys data?

Not really into cm10 after trying it on my Nexus7, by interesting ics rom, you mean roms like cm10 and others?

Make sure you are rooted or TB won't work.
Yes you will lose all settings, but they aren't too hard to set back up.
Edit: Yes to the last question also. Backup all user apps. No sys data.

Ok did the Odin flash, but it said RESET instead of PASS, and now its stuck on the "SAMSUNG" screen that glows brighter and softer... Going to try re-downloading stock ROM. Hope this works!
Turns out that the only problem was that I had to go into recovery after the Odin finished flashing, then reset cache and restore to factory.
Then it worked!

Hi there!
I hope i'm not opening a repeated thread. I've search ( not correctly i think ) but i couldn't find any significant answer.
I've recently installed MIUI on my defy...
Now i want to install cyanogenmod and i'd like to know whether i can flash over miui without losing any data nor app.
Or should i have to downgrade to Froyo, lose ( surely i'll do a backup ) all my data, root my phone, install SndInit Defy and flash cm7?
Thus, what i have to do?

Well.. it won't brick your phone if you try to install the rom just by applying and wiping cache/dalvik only. I wouldn't recommend it, but you could give it a try. Do a backup first.
But despite that, I don't see that making a backup of the important apps and data via Titanium and applying that afterwards is so much work.

You see, the problem is that once i try to restore all apps from Titanium, it always ask the permission ( i.e. if i want to install the app or not )! It doesn't do a silent-install.
It's such a boring thing tapping "Install" for over 60 times :\.
Am i wrong or is there a way to do a silent restore of all backups?
Wipe data and cache from Custom Recovery and then flash CM7 without rebooting after wiping.

I've read that only Titanium Backup Pro has this feature... I'm disappointed :\.

i am on cm7 and updating it is a cake.... i wanted to know if i can do the same interchangeably with cMIUI.
since both the roms are still developing. trying each and restoring backup is a pain.
any advice?

I have used both and I am currently coming back to CM7.
MIUI is somewhat frustrating for me, constant forceclose on the most basic apps and every update requires some kind of retinkering to get it back to work correctly (like reinstalling gapps and Ti).
Also, i dont like the stock MIUI apps such as dialer, messenger and contacts. I know that I can replace them but its a custom ROM and it think it should be optimal out of the box. I can deal with replacing one but at least three are too many for me.
I know this wasnt supposed to be a review but i wouldn't bother replacing CM7 with MIUI.

If you are staying with the same rom and kernel setup, is it OK to restore system settings??? I've read numerous times that is advised NOT to do the system settings backup, but am unsure if it applies to my situation......

Its never advised to restore system data as a general rule.
If you're on a custom ROM and simply updating to a new version of that ROM, you don't necessarily have to wipe before installing... you should be able to flash right over it.
Also... if you're switching between roms, it's generally advised not to restore app data as it's been seen to cause FCs.

I've generally never had a problem with USER app data, sometimes even cross-platform. That said the above is correct, it CAN cause issues, just something to keep in mind as you're restoring apps/data. Think what can I live without, what do I absolutely need, depending on the app, can its data be exported to an innocuous form that can be imported without issue, etc...

i do all three quite often...even when switching roms (i use my backup root and back up all three separately in the order system data, app data, and apps then restore in the reverse order).
just remember if you start having problems begin with clearing app data and move from there.

I am on 4.0.4 and I regurarly backup with Titaniumbackup both apps and system data.
If I manually update to 4.1 (which means a total factory reset of the phone) will I be able to import back the above backups and get the phone as it was before the upgrade.
I am not really worried about the apps but about the system data, as they may have changed.

well then I'm gonna wait for official JB OTA... Don't wanna spend another 2 hours re-configuring my phone :-(
btw, any official root method for JB, just to prepare in advance... I have Voodo OTA rootKeeper but not sure if it'll work...
If you're using titanium backup with encrypted stuff, you'll have to wait for a jb update.
Also, if you're trying to uninstall anything from /system/app/ you'll also have to wait for a jb update for titanium backup.
Supposedly basic backup and restore of tb is working.

What takes 2 hours to configure?? Email accounts and settings, WiFi settings, BT settings, etc, are all downloaded once you sign into your Google account. If you use a third-party sound manager, alarm clock and launcher, all those settings would be restored when you restore from Titanium. What else is left??

well upgrade + restore + some configurations that cannot be backedup (home screen icons placement, alarms, etc.) may take up to a couple of hours...
pls, I have just realised that the JB rom here on xda is deodexed whioch means no future OTA updates...
I can wait till the official JB OTA, in the meantime the new gnex toolkit compatible with JB will be ready and right after the upgrade in one click I can re-unlock and re-root

1) The ROM here is not deodexed: http://tinyurl.com/JRN84D
2) If you rely on a toolkit to do things for you, you will never learn anything and more importantly, it will make it harder to troubleshoot if you have issues.

2] I had an HD2 with android before the gnex, so I do know how to do things manually, and my first unlock/root on my gnex I did manually... simply since 1 month I wake up at 6am, commute for 1h, wotk for another 9 hours and then back home at 8pm... so honestly I have no time at all to waste on my phone considering i prefer wasting it with my wife, my bike, my scubadiving, etc... ;-) so yes the toolkit is a timesaver for me ;-)
You really shouldn't ever restore system data. It's just asking for trouble.

1) Yes, I would. I would also install the bootloader. See the second post of the "flash" link in my signature.
2) I hear ya. But what I was trying to say is that: a) doing it yourself is NOT any slower than a toolkit if you know what you are doing, and b) it will be faster to fix (in the event of any issues) if you don't use a toolkit.

btw, I am rooted and i have CWM installed: does it mean that with CWM i won't get the OTA?
I can confirm that restoring system data from 4.0.4 to 4.1 will not work fully. I did that last week and google now wasn't working properly, and there were some syncing issues with other applications (grey wifi and data bars)
I also don't think its that much of a hassle to have to re-setup stuff. Each time you do it, it gets quicker . Plus sometimes I make improvements to homescreen/widget setup.

You should never restore system data across different builds, only across the same build.
You should always do a full wipe before taking a full system ota. It is no different then flashing a rom... you can set the rom not to wipe data either but lots of things will get screwed up.
If you have such a complex setup that you never want to wipe data then you should just stay on the same build and be happy
Can anyone tell me what exactly restoring system data does? I noticed 4.1 comes with its own google maps and such but i also restored it from 4.0.4. Does that mean I'm running 4.0.4 apps?

It's fine to restore system data when going from a 4.0.4 ROM to a 4.0.4 ROM. But you are asking for trouble (FC's, crashes, bootloops, etc.) by restoring system data from one version of a ROM to another (like from 4.0.4 to 4.1).

If you're doing a batch restore in Titanium it will not include system apps. So, yes, restore missing apps with data should be fine. Titanium is smart enough to not let you mass restore system apps.
I have been able to upgrade from a full stock 4.0.4 to the 4.1 shown in ROM manager without wiping more than cache.

Hey everyone. Whats up. I am wondering if a complete wipe is mandatory every time when upgrading to a the latest cyanogen mod version? (To Clarify I mean from an older cyanogen 10.1 rom version). If so is there simple instructions that you could give me to explain exactly how?

If it doesn't say in the OP where the instructions are, you are normally safe. You can always use Titanium Backup to save all of your apps and settings and them restore them after installing the updated version. Never restore system settings to any ROM that is not what you backed them up from. Apps are fine to do so.

Thanks Gray for your prompt reply, although to sum my question up more, I was really asking something different. You see I have an older version of cyanogen mod 10.1, using the same rom, I'd like to know how to upgrade to the newest version which is Feb 26 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2099881 without deleting my data. It kinda sucks to go through this process time and time again lol

the reason you always wipe is to avoid bugs and problems. Even though you can get away with dirty flashing sometimes, most of the time its going to cause problems and lag
Do yourself a favor, buy either titanium backup pro or rom toolbox pro, backup whats important with those, and clean flash. those are the best way to keep things while avoiding problems

I'm thinking about to speed up my phone again as it was in the past. Those 4.2 Features are pretty poor compared to the slowness they bringing into our phone.
I was very satisfied with 4.1.2 it was like made for gnex only and not for hardwaremonster like n4.
So my question:
Is there any possibility to flash stock rom 4.1.2 and get all the data from 4.2.2 so i dont have to set up everything from scratch?
Maybe an app that sync with a cloud or something else like full backup of the settings and appsettings and so on.
And after that the system should not push the notification about new updates.

You could flash the stock image from Google.

You could try Carbon. I haven't used it myself so I can't comment on it but if I remember correctly it does not require root.

I always do nandroid backup first....no root needed, just custom recovery. Then flashing new factory image (full wipe) , copying everything back to sdcard...and finally restoring backup.
I would say root for the purposes of baking up to cloud with tibu, then flash, root, restore, unroot if you want to.
