[Q] Quick question..... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to get the kitchen to work yet for some reason it just won't run. not sure if it is because I have a 64bit system while it refers to 32bit or not.
My question is that I found a rom I really want to use but don't want the lockscreen, messages app or launcher. Is it just easy enough to edit the roms zip and remove those apk and add the apk for what I want and then flash it?

Yup. Kitchens r crap half the time. I use them to break open the boot.img or add a few things here and there. The rest is done on my own

Ok.....
What I have is I want to use AlterRom since it more closely gives what I am after. It has GoLauncher already which I have used since I purchased my phone but I also use GoSMS to work around the 160 Char limit by Sprint. I can install it easily enough but I also want to remove the messaging that is there already because of rom size. I will also be using Swyper keyboard so I want to remove the one installed also for rom size. I use GoLocker so how do I delete the one installed? It doesn't remember what I set as default so it always loads the rom version instead of Golocker?

Can't remove stock messaging or it breaks SMS. Look for keyboard.apk or latinime.apk. for keyboard but remember u need the right lib files to get swype to work. And u can't remove stock lock screen. Its integrated into the os. Look at running pngopt or something to reduce rom size. Or open up each apk and remove language files. Delete live wallpapers or wallpapers u won't use. I've never used alterrom but there is always ways to make a rom smaller.

Sorry about that. I said swiper but I meant Swiftkey as a keyboard.
So can I just use Titanium Backup to freeze the stock lockscreen? If so what file would I be looking for?

Nope. Stock needs to be left alone. Golocker should take over. The stock is not an apk. Its built into the frameworks. Unless its sense then there's an apk u can delete

Not sure if Sense or not. Says Senseless but OP says 'most' Sense removed. I will share the thread link and hopefully you will be able to tell better.

To get go locker working right with the stock lockscreen, goto settings>security>screen lock and select none then set go locker as default. This will disable stock lockscreen so it won't interfere with golocker

I have done that. I remember once GoLocker had a setting that would force it over stock but I can't find it now. Problem is that when installed I get both lockscreens.
But let me see if I can understand. If I am editing a Sense Rom all I need to do is delete the lockscreen apk,Rosie or whatever is launcher apk and only the apk that handles viewing of messages(not the provider) apk and add the apk of the apps I want to use and then flash the rom correct? I can do this with any app I wish to change out and delete the apk for the files I do not want like Navigation(Google Maps does it) and that's it or do I also need to modify the build.prop to reflect the changes?

No need to make any build.prop edits from what you wanna do.
If its Sense lockscreen look for HtcLockscreen.apk, and delete that.
An enviousOG

Don't remove mms.apk(the messaging app) it will break mms and only SMS will work, just hide the messaging app in the drawer. Removing htclockscreen.apk and [Desktop]Rosie.apk and any HTC Widgets is OK the mms.apk is small enough if you delete all of the Rosie and sense Widgets it won't make much difference. After deleting HTCLockscreen.apk you will be left with the stock android sliders, if you set screen lock to none in security settings you should just go straight to your homescreen or app when u turn the screen on, if that's the case then setting go locker as default should make it so golocker is the only lockscreen you see. Another option since youre going senseless anyways is cm7.2 its much smaller than a sense rom even if the sense rom is senseless

Thanks. That is what I was hoping. I really wasn't looking forward to making changes to the build.prop. Not a problem to do on my PC and it'll flash correct?
As for cm7 that was the one I was looking at but I can't get Sprint Zone to work on it. Is an application I use a lot so is kinda important to have.

If he's talking about Alter ROM, that's all been done already.
Really, that ROM is pretty small to begin with (335MB free internal after default install, plus you can always set up a2sd to move dalvik)
Removing these three small apps doesn't seem like it will result in any meaningful increase in available RAM.
I guess my two questions would be, how much free RAM are you aiming for (and why - do you have that many apps?) and what is so useful about Sprint Zone?

How do I DELETE sprint software? +Another question (possible payment included)

I flashed baked snack, but I still see it there.
I'm trying to delete the following
Sprint Zone
sprint football
sprint hotspot
Nascar
Can it be done with astro file manager?
on another note
Is there anyone who knows of a possible way to get the best of both worlds (sense and no sense?)
what I'm trying to do is try a non-sense rom ( since I LOVE launcher pro) but I still want my sense facebook implementation, my HTC widgets, and the HTC clock/weather widget.
I'd be willing to donate if someone can get me a rom that features that, and great battery life.
I have run launcher pro in a Sense ROM. You would still be able to use the Sense widgets (Friendstream, People, etc) as well as the Launcher Pro widgets.
get root explorer from the market, go to system/app look for the apps you want to delete and delete them,!!
To add to this.....
IF you get an error trying to delete an app in Root Explorer, there is a button near the top of the screen that says r/w click that button. Some "System Apps" are read only, and you won't have write privileges automatically to delete the app. Selecting r/w will change that level of privilege. You won't see anything happen, just click it once and try to delete the app again. (Hope that makes sense) I had trouble deleting something a while back, and someone pointed that out to me.

The easiest way? download root manager, mount as R/W and then you will be able to uninstall whatever you want.
Are there any free options to do it

How did you do this? Sense widgets are not listed when you try to add one. In fact, from launcherpro.com website:
One of the features I get requested the most is to support HTC Sense widgets. It seems everyone wants them. Because of the way these widgets are built into the HTC Sense launcher itself, this is simply not possible. And since not every Android user has a phone with HTC Sense, these widgets are not even available to all users.
I'm assuming you have adb set up on your PC. Just let me know if you haven't yet and I'll try to get you set up. This is a free option, and if you have everything set up correctly, the easiest.
Go to the command prompt on the PC and type in the following:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/app
ls
Click to collapse
That will bring up a list of pre-installed applications, including the Sprint apps. When you see the name of one you don't want, simply type the following
rm APPNAME.apk
Click to collapse
And there you have it! The app will be uninstalled .
ok - 2 things here.
first - sense widgets are are specific to sense and they will not run on LP. So no sense clock&weather, no stocks widget, no news widget, etc. However FB integration is not a widget, it's built into sense itself. So the integration is still there. There are tons of replacement clock and weather widgets in the market - try beautiful widgets, its not free but it's worth every penny. Also if you buy LP, the dev is working on bringing his version of the sense widgets to LP, so you can still get the people widget, calendar widget, bookmarks widget, and messages widget, and he's working on the others. They're slightly different, but the experience is still the same.
Second, the easiest way to remove those stock apps is actually through Titanium backup, and you should be able to uninstall them with the free version too.

Damn the facebook integration is something I'd really miss.
Thanks for the tip for titanium backup, it did the trick!

Question for ROM Devs

I hate the stock messaging app. I don't really like Handcent, except that it has the "Iphone" look and makes text conversations go side to side. Is it difficult to drop another messaging app in as the stock messaging app? I would love to see more ROMs(mostly Ava because that is what I generally run) use another messaging app. Thanks for your time.

No its not hard. Thats why the rom devs don't do it. It lets everyone go choose what app they would like. Also some of the sms apps require the original messaging to still be installed... which makes it harder.
I would try go sms. LOTS of themes, and options.

I did not know that some messaging apps require the stock messaging app. I would think that when you have to programs doing the same thing, the phone is not being as efficient as possible. How can someone replace the stock messaging app with a new one? I don't want to use an app in conjunction with another app and disable the original, I want to get rid of the original.
Two ways....
Either break open the rom and delete out the apps you don't want before flashing. Or, install app you want then go in and delete (not disable) the original app using appropriate file manager program.

[Q] CM7 with LauncherPro - Find access to dialer and contacts

I finally took the jump to cm7 final as the first installed rom on my phone, had been rooted for a while now. It loaded LauncherPro with no issues but most of my system app shortcuts don't work. How can I get access to the Dialer? I wanted to create a custom shortcut with LauncherPro and change my icon. Where may I find it? Same with contacts?
Ok I feel like a idiot because I found them under apps named as contacts and phone under applications. I was looking at the Activities, sorry.
No need to feel like an idiot each ROM is different and takes some getting used to. The fact you were able to figure it out on your own will make you feel that much more comfortable with your new ROM.

[Q] News and Weather app in Jugg 4.1

Can't yet post in the dev forums so I'm asking here.
Since flashing Juggernaught 4.1 I've lost my news and weather app. Does anyone know how this might have happened? Or have an apk or zip so I can add it back? Thanks
I still have it on my Juggernaut 4.1 phone, if you're talking about the News and Weather Widget. I just touch the screen, select widgets and it's there.
If you're sure it's not on your phone, then the ROM team include an app called Bloater which allows you to reinstall any of the bloatware apps that have been removed. Run it, select T-Mobile SGS2, then select Samsung Apps, and scroll down to the [Widget]News item. If it shows a button that says Install, then click it and install it. If not, then it's already installed.
Good Luck..
Thanks, but that's not the one that's missing for me.
I'm talking about the one that the icon looks like a newspaper. When you launch it gives you the weather with an hourly slider, and when you scroll to the right you get news. Any thoughts?
both of you are talking about the same App
if you lost it or deleted it by accident, you can always pull it from a stock ROM
just download any of the STOCK rom from Dev section, and copy and paste it from there
They are in fact different. The news widget in bloater is the AP news widget. The app is like I described previously. Using bloater to add back the widget does not reinstall the app. I haven't deleted anything, so I'm not sure why it disappeared when I flashed jugg 4.1, but I will try to add it from stock when I get home later.

[Q] Possibilty of de-wizzing built-in apps?

So I think my biggest complaint on this phone, in my opinion, is touchwiz. I think its plain ugly and makes my phone look like a cartoon. And the apps like the calculator dialer clock calendar etc. all try desperately in subtle and blatant ways to copy apple, which really irritates me because the stock GB apps worked just fine, and in some ways I think better.
Touchwiz goes far beyond the launcher, and I've done everything I know how to do that I've searched to replace my launcher and excessively theme to make my phone look like ICS and keep touchwiz out of my face...but its still irritating to me to open up my contacts and be greeted with this silly interface that makes dialing and finding contacts a swiping-frenzy joke while the stock GB dialer was perfectly fine, and better IMO.
Coming from the Nexus phones with ICS...Gingerbread is no prize either but I think is much better as far as all those apps go. So my question is if its possible to replace the built in dialer, clock, calendar, calculator with .apks or other files? and If so how I would go about doing it? Thanks everyone.
Here's what I do.
Freeze all the touchwiz apps I dont like (i.e. dialer, contacts, launcher, etc.) and I use Apex Launcher and Go Contacts/Go Dialer EX. Works fine, and you can theme that easily.
If you are sporty, you can download a Nexus ICS rom and pull the phone/dialer, contacts, calc, etc. that you like, and try to put it in your system/app folder or data/app folder. havent tried this so it may not work.

Thats what I think I may do...but I'm probably going to take the stock GB stuff since I'm thinking ICS stuff wouldn't work right on juggs. I'll try to pull the apk's from eugene's CM7 and see what happens.
Oh sorry, I have ICS on the brain. Forgot to check your sig and see you were on Gingerbread
alot of times, you may be able to find the AOSP version of the apps in the market too.
