Question for ROM Devs - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hate the stock messaging app. I don't really like Handcent, except that it has the "Iphone" look and makes text conversations go side to side. Is it difficult to drop another messaging app in as the stock messaging app? I would love to see more ROMs(mostly Ava because that is what I generally run) use another messaging app. Thanks for your time.

No its not hard. Thats why the rom devs don't do it. It lets everyone go choose what app they would like. Also some of the sms apps require the original messaging to still be installed... which makes it harder.
I would try go sms. LOTS of themes, and options.

I did not know that some messaging apps require the stock messaging app. I would think that when you have to programs doing the same thing, the phone is not being as efficient as possible. How can someone replace the stock messaging app with a new one? I don't want to use an app in conjunction with another app and disable the original, I want to get rid of the original.

Two ways....
Either break open the rom and delete out the apps you don't want before flashing. Or, install app you want then go in and delete (not disable) the original app using appropriate file manager program.

Safe to remove messaging software?

I would only use handcent messaging, so can i remove the built in messaging app?
It annoys me that it shows on sharing lists. (plus it's running all the time)
I don't recommend deleting it. I've read before that removing it breaks MMS capabilities... Not sure about text messages.
I'd recommend you back up the APK file before deleting just in case.

No.

Get a grip. If you remove it, messaging will stop working because the service that makes it work is part of it. Handcent is a GUI interface to the message store, it is not the messaging service.

[Q] Anyone using Handcent SMS

Hi fellow DHD users Just want to know if there are any fellow handcent SMS users here, and i wiould like to know if using handcent sms would cause my battery to drain faster? because is the phone technically receiving double notifications/msgs as the stock messages app is still running? A little concerned with my battery, though handcent is much better than the stock.
Turn the notifications off in the stock sms by going to settings, and uncheck everything in receive notifications.. Hope that helps..

I use handcent. I backed up the stock messaging app with Titanium Backup, then uninstalled it.
I've not noticed faster battery drain since using handcent.
Been using Handcent for a long while now on my Hero with no problems. Just prefer the variety of available options. Will also be using it on my new DHD.
Wouldn't have thought it would drain the battery any faster. Just make sure you disable the notifications in the stock app to avoid duplicate notifications.
I'm (reluctantly) looking into using Handcent because of HTC's last botched update. The screenshots seem to show a rather tacky interface, with odd-looking speech bubbles used to depict conversations.... Is there anyway to switch to the more traditional look?
Handcent all the way and havent really noticed any faster drain. If its there its slight and the benefits out weigh it anyway.
However, since I began using whatsapp I rarely use SMS. Just seems such an ancient idea now
I don't use anything else but handcent, cracking app

Yes you can. In Settings you can change it to look flat, without the bubbles.

GO SMS is my choice. Very smooth, and nice convo customizations.
Thanks olivierlee.
With all of these 3rd party SMS apps, do they completely replace the Sense SMS? ie, if you open a contact and create a new sms from there, will it open the 3rd party app, or Sense?
And if you open a contact and look at their SMS history, will you see SMSs sent/received using the 3rd party app?
Thanks again.

When you choose to send and SMS from the People app, you'll get to choose which SMS app you want to use. You can also make your choice permanent (this is reversible too).
And in People, the SMS history is shown in the People app itself, and again if you choose to reply from the SMS history list, you'll be given the choice of SMS apps.
I was using handcent sms, I like it, but switched to go sms for a bit. Both are good, go sms might be slightly better, depends what you like. Handcent quick sms thing is pretty cool and the fact it has widgets gives it an advantage.
Thanks for the advice guys... I've installed Handcent now, and it looks excellent. May well stick with it even if HTC ever bother to fix Sense SMS.

I was reluctant because the baloonish look, but you can easily customize its look and make more "professional". Good app in the end.
Cheers

Just giving a try to Go SMS, aint that bad...
EDIT: memory footprint is bigger than handcent's one (35MB Vs. 24MB), despite a lighter interface. Looks like I'll stay on HandCent

Improve Stock SMS application?

With Android being so customizable, are we able to go into deep customizations with the stock apps for Android? I'd like to know if we could add more features to the stock sms client already, like sms pop-ups, emoji support (for friends who have iPhones), etc.
I know there are other clients like Handcent SMS, but I don't like having to use third party apps. If this can be accomplished, I think it would be a great addition to CyanogenMod.
If I'm not mistaken, cm does use an already modded sms app.

Those emoji can be easily replaced in the res folder within the Mms.apk pop ups would be third party app or if someone can really take a look at it and make it like MIUIs default sms, it has its own popup feature..

I need an alternative phone dialer

Since installing ICS, the phone dialer doesn't have the tabs for contacts, keypad and call logs all under one app. But it did in gingerbread. So I'm looking for something pretty much like the default phone app but with 3 tabs at the top saying Logs, Contacts and Keypad (or Dialer), instead of the two separate apps called Contacts and Phone. The default contacts app has groups, contacts and favourites, and the default phone app has keypad, logs and again, favourites. Well I don't need favourites or groups. I can't really find anything suitable on the market, can you recommend me something preferably with a dark background? Something like this,
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/8216/icsdialere4touch.png
but without all the rooting and mods needed. Also, if I install a dialer app from the market, will it delete my contacts and call logs or will they remain intact? Thanks.

Contact.apk is a system application, you will need root.
Try GoDialer or something like this.

You could try this one exdialer and on top of it this theme
but without all the rooting and mods needed. Also, if I install a dialer app from the market, will it delete my contacts and call logs or will they remain intact? Thanks.

Your contacts will be safe if you install a new contacts or dealer application.
As stated previously you can try GoContacts.
Only dialer that suits my needs (I have tried tens of them) is DialerOne: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kz.mek.DialerOne
try exDialer.. i tried them all and it's the best IMHO.
it also has themes and can slide right for call and slide left for SMS.
Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm liking exDialer a lot so I'll go ahead and install the darker themes. :good: I was expecting a separate call log screen but it's cool how the logs and keypad are together. I also like that it actually tells me 'outgoing' 'incoming' 'not answered' and not just indicator arrows. When I make a call from it then uses the default samsung dialer screen (speaker, mute, headset, add call, end call, keypad). It doesn't matter but I thought it was going to have it's own interface. I also installed aContacts which is quite good but I think exDialer is better.
You can download Go launcher and then buy the ICS PRO CONTACTS is the closest dialer to the one u r looking for mate.

Thanks Lonzo. Well tbh I'd been using Go Launcher for a while but it was so slow opening things, even not responding, that I'm using Apex Launcher now which is way better. I've installed the exDialer ICS theme and it looks nice and works well. :good:
What's the disadvantages of not rooting your phone? my phone lasted unroot from postman hands to my door only lol. Before the phone arrived I already downloaded the required stuff. Enjoy the freedom of rooting.

yes... I had Go Launcher since GB days but for ICS is kinda slow.. APEX is better.
and ICS Pro runs with no lag on APEX... Ex Dialer looks good indeed...

[Q] Batch mode for default messaging app

Is there any way to add a batch mode for the default JB Messaging app so I can work with several messages at once? or has anybody done this for our XPERIAs?
AVOID suggesting me 3rd party apps from playstore, no one is close to the perfection of default messaging app, and also I want my phone as googleish as possible, so I don't actually change any default app like that. Any "answer" like this will be ignored.
Cmon, anyone has to know the answer for this!
well.. no one.. *feels alone* where are the devs when you need them.
