[Q] How's the gps - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Haven't noticed any reference to the gps in the reviews I've read.
I understand the gps reception in the SGSIII is very good and assume the Note II should be every bit as good?

It is for me as good as the gs3
My only problem is to find a car adaptator big enough for the phone
Envoyé depuis mon GT-N7100 avec Tapatalk

Hi.
I use the GPS alot in my car in the UK. So far the lock-on is amazingly fast and really reliable - having said that, I've only had the phone since monday...

Im interested in this also, people always talk about "lock" but what do you mean by it. Im always able to get a good location with my G2x but it doesnt always mean that its good enough for the navigation to work. Whats important to me is not how fast it finds where i am but how well it is ble to keep a lock for navigation.

[Q] Galaxy nexus GPS unstable accuracy

Hello,
I have been through hell and back trying to get this GPS to work consistently. I am using the GSM version. Tried all 4.0.1 through 4.0.4 stock, then roms (aokp, cm, foxhound) with different kernels and radios too.
Also tried apps like Gps status/ fasterfix/ gpsfix .... Changed the satelites in gps.conf manualy.....
First my problem is the GPS gets signal from sattelites, usualy around 6-7. The accuracy is max 15 feet. Thats WITH wifi on... Without I get 5 max, and the signal is so inconsistent, that when driving it will randomly throw me on other roads, the speed is all wrong, basicaly its not usable as a gps device.
I have also returned it on warranty, but all they did is switch languages (???), as I had latest stock.
Do you guys have any tips and tricks on what else I can do. I have been searching forums forever, only found 1 guy with the same problem, and his fix was geting another phone
Presently I am selling my nexus, I dont want to, as Its the best phone Ive had so far, but this is ridicilous from a "flagship" device.
Weird, my nexus locks on fast and is very accurate. Only thing is can say is get a replacement, which you've tried.

So there is no hope?
Meh my damn luck
Mine is pretty accurate down to the traffic direction, but occasionally jumps to the opposite direction, but always stays on the road.
There are much more user with the same problem as you. I also have this problem and tried a lot go fix it and atm it is not solved.
My GPS is also very jumpy. On my first gn device it also lost the GPS signal very often while driving.
To demonstrate this issue I uploaded a video on YouTube in comparison to my old nexus one. Just search for galaxy nexus vy nexus one GPS. Its an in car video.
Now I got my second device, GPS is better now but often very jumpy. It fixes the same amount of satellites as my nexus one but it is far away from being accurate.
I can not say if this is a hardware or a software problem, for me it is a reason to change the device soon. The HTC one x also seems to have a bad GPS so maybe the s3, which also supports Glonass, is the way to go.
If you get it fixed pls let us know!

Oh man, I read your posts on the forums, and saw your youtube video. Thought u said that you fixed the issue after the third replacement?
So One X has the same problems? Damn.... I do not know what to get then, whens the s3 comming out?
With my new device it is much better but can not beat my nexus one in any way.
The S3 is announced to be released in Europe on the 29th of May. Preorder 599 Euro.

Seems like Samsung just sux when it comes to GPS. I was hoping the galaxy nexus would have addressed these issues, then the S2....I'm thinking my next phone will be Motorola...they are usually excellent with GPS functionality.
Samsung, this is unacceptable for a phone that costs more than a high end tablet!
[email protected] you and the ship you sailed in upon Samsung!

Oh here we go, another one with a "buttery smooth" perfect Unicorn GNEX.
Come on people, we all know a "buttery smooth" Gnex does not exist. The AOKP roms are as fast and smooth as you're going to get but you will always find a time, situation, app or website, or indeed functionality like the dodgy sat nav, to trip up anyone pretending to have a "buttery smooth" Nexus.
I have awful problems with the GNex with gps, and regardless of Rom, it just doesn't improve.
Saving up for something that works.

Mines buttery smooth, is mine a unicorn?
All jokes aside, mines pretty smooth, and get great GPS locks.
One thing I noticed was that, on pure stock and any AOKP from M5 to now, great GPS lock, always using Franco M3.
But when I tried SlimICS, horrible GPS locks, accurate to about 250 ft. -_-

GPS is extremely bad!!
My Galaxy 1 was so much more accurate. When running, average speed is off by at least 1 km/h. Fail!

[Q] Thinking about getting an SIII, are there any issues?

I'm having a lot of data issues with my HTC One S on T-Mobile US, so I'm thinking about getting an SIII. I can either do a warranty exchange on my One S but the SIII looks like it can outperform the One S so here I am.
I wanted to know if there have been any issues with the SIII? From the various threads I've seen, there doesn't appear to be any but I just wanted to ask current users. I'd like some input on:
stock ROM performance (although I will root eventually)
data connectivity (data network and wifi)
camera performance
battery performance
GPS performance
how your root experience was (easy, difficult, issues laden?)
any gotchas?
Also, what's the difference between the 2 development threads? Why is one called Original and the other is not?
Many thanks

stock ROM performance (although I will root eventually)
A. Amazing! The new touchwiz is smooth and very stable, it's partially the reason why I always go back to stock based roms.
data connectivity (data network and wifi)
A. It depends on where you live but I haven't had any issues with data at all, it's reasonably faster than it was on my Galaxy S2 so no complaints there!
camera performance
A. I think the camera is one of the best on the market, photo's are very sharp and clear from my experience.
battery performance
A. The battery on this device is good, I can make it through a day easily with moderate use.
GPS performance
A. I don't use GPS very much so I can't give you a good answer to that one but I haven't heard any complaints about it.
how your root experience was (easy, difficult, issues laden?)
A. My root experience was great, if you had a Galaxy S2 and rooted it, it's basically the same thing. If not it's still very basic if you follow the instructions correctly.
any gotchas?
A. Not sure what this means, if your talking about issues or something like that then I have one:
- The device can get warm from time to time when using data for long periods of time, other then that I haven't had any issues with phone.
I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking to get a new phone!
Only problem I have is it warms up from heavy data use from time to time. Stock ROM was wonderful but I finally flashed cm10 last night to see how it is. I couldn't believe it but the phone became even faster Haha I highly recommend this phone
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Stock ROM: Nearly perfect. It's fluid. It's fast, it's useful. And you can switch most things on or off without rooting. You can get a newly Aosp experience without root.
Data: As good as any other recent phone. Data completely relies on where you live. The s3 will not give you any problems.
Battery: Good or very good. The phone lasts about 20 hours with moderate usage. It can easily hit 2 days with light usage. Jelly bean currently has no bugs but it does drain the battery slightly more than ics. Expect 17 hours average on jelly bean.
Gps: Best in class. Locks instantly, consistently within 20 seconds cold boot.
Rooting: Rooting is easy and takes 3 minutes.
CAMERA: Same as the iPhone 4s but i do believe the software is better. Pictures are some of the best for a smartphone. Only a few phones best it but it is not by much.
Other: Phone is ready for wireless charging of you want to solder 2 wires on it. Also, i have heard reports that the screen cracks on some drops so be warned and careful.
Overall. Super fast, super reliable, has bugless jelly bean,

I have the sgs3 and I absolutely love it. Was on stock form late July till about 2 weeks ago and it seemed to perform just fine. I'm not huge on the TouchWiz interface of the past but this one wasn't so bad. Was never at a loss for power even though we didn't get the Integra (le sigh). Here in Chicago the data is always smooth but I spend some time in rural WI, so up there it could be better but that is more local then phone performance related. The Camera was outstanding. Girlfriend has the HTC One S and she was a little jealous of the camera by comparison. I had a very smooth root transition and I did it about a week after I got the phone, now I can only imagine it will be smoother for you. Flashed to the cm10 nightlies and I have had a few issues but nothing that was major. Not to mention Cyanogen himself is developing on the T999 which is awesome. Only issues that I would be aware of is that when I rooted my phone there were some issues with people losing their IMEI... but that has mostly been cleared up if you search around the forums. I think it had something to do with people rooting for the international version instead of the US Carrier version. Not sure but I didn't encounter it. Best phone I have ever had. Like it even more then my old G2 that I refused to get rid of till it finally crashed.
Please don't get it.
The only issue I have had is the dirty looks from Apple fan boys

Stock works just perfect its stable and such however i notice that when data is turned on the phone gets a little bit hot but nothing too serious...
Battery life is okay 22hs unplugged and 3h30minutes screen on time ..
I dont see any major issues camera is really good in bright area but when it gets very dark whit no flash camera is taking pics whit lot of noise but its very responsive ..

You should be proud.. that you have a phone that doesn't break apart in the box during shipping.
My first S III had a dent in the metal beneath the battery and the second one had a significant scratch in the speaker grill. My third one was just assembled loosely or the pieces didn't fit together well so there were gaps in the seams under the battery cover and all three of these had poorly calibrated displays because white images appeared to be slightly yellow at times so I wouldn't poke fun at Apple if I were you...
4th one's the charm though. I'm happy with this one.

The GS3 is the best phone I have ever had. Don't have any problems. Only thing I miss is no FM radio.
Yes it leaks.
Best phone period.
Well, until the next big thing arrives
-stock ROM performance (although I will root eventually)
Rooting doesn't necessarily mean that you have to switch ROMs, but anyways, stock ROM seems to use a bit more battery than lets say CyanogenMod but other than that, I enjoy the motion controls on the stock rom. I always have better bars than my friends and everything works like a charm
- data connectivity (data network and wifi)
wifi and data both work well. one time I had a problem where data wasn't working that well but i fixed it by reverting back to stock kernel.
-camera performance
i love taking pictures with the camera. the features are pretty enjoyable too. my aunt really loves the "beauty" feature on the camera where it clears up blemishes and makes you look really nice 8D really enjoy being able to take pictures while recording video as well.
- battery performance
typical day I can get 4 hours of screen time in the full day. that is with some light gaming, lots of texting and some social networking. pretty good for a heavy user. my old phone nexus s, would always get low battery and I would have to watch my usage.
- GPS performance
before i switched carriers, I had unlimited data on mobilicity so that worked really well with the GPS. I could always locate myself and sometimes when I wasn't too sure about the area, i could pull up google maps and it would find where I am within seconds.
- how your root experience was (easy, difficult, issues laden?)
rooting the s3 was pretty simple. It just involved using Odin to flash a custom recovery and then installing superuser. it was a lot easier than my nexus s where I had to use adb and fastboot
- any gotchas?
there is the occasional lag and glitch here and there but then again after rooting you can't expect everything to run perfectly. hopefully you get the s3 and enjoy

GPS signal quality on AOSP?

Hi, coming from a Samsung Epic 4G Touch and am considering picking up an S3 for my upgrade. I just have one question I wasn't able to find an answer to while searching: do you notice a drop in signal quality on your GPS between Touchwiz and, say, CM10?
On my E4GT (bought on the release date), I notice a pretty dramatic drop in GPS accuracy when I go to any of the AOSP-based ROMs and just want to make sure this isn't an issue before I make the jump. Way fewer satellites on GPS Test, that sort of thing.
I'd also be curious about any thoughts on the GPS performance of the GS3in general, too. I use the car navigation a lot, as well as some tracking apps for cycling and running.
Thanks for any help!

How good is CM10 on the T-mobile GS3?

Was waiting for the Nexus 4, but with the Playstore debacle and the underwhelming reviews, am now thinking about the Galaxy S3 (prefer T-Mobile version over AT&T version because I like that the T-Mobile version has AT&T HSPA bands, so I can switch between T-Mo and AT&T prepaid if I want to) or the HTC One X.
I love AOSP, so the determining factor for me is how good is CM10 stable on this phone. Is it basically just as fast and as stable as the stock Touchwiz ROM? Does everything (bluetooth, GPS, wifi, notification LED, etc.) work just fine? It seems like in most AOSP based custom ROMs, at least something is broken. Does everything here work?
Is quality of pictures taken with the CM10 camera the same as quality of pictures taken with Touchwiz camera?
I would greatly appreciate any feedback on how well CM10 stable runs on this phone.
Thanks!
I think yes on all accounts.
Flaky bluetooth on CM10

There is only one issue in CM10 that I'm aware of and that is bluetooth flakiness. I use bluetooth for phone call connectivity with my Acura TL's factory HandsfreeLink system. CM10 experiences random bluetooth disconnects during a call. It takes a long time to sync sometimes and on occasion it won't even connect to bluetooth. If you google about this you'll find ATT CM10 users experiencing similar issues.
Bluettooth works flawlessly on stock btw. So unless you talk on the phone a lot in your car that has bluetooth, CM10 is amazing!
Yea CM10 stable is pretty legit. You can also try AOKP M1 its like cm10 with a few slightly different features and its very stable

cm10 my 2 cents
battery
bluetooth
picasa sync
wifi calling
etc
I think CM10 is great. I loved it while I was on it but... samsung / qualcom etc I don't know...
I have no idea why on stock i get better internet speeds than on cm10
android is open source but are the underlying "things" that talk to the hardware/hardware open source?
It is a mystery to me....
I love cm10 and am no way trying to troll please forgive me if you don't like my opinion and don't start a war please.....
Everything you posted is true/user based. Battery is good for me on the latest cm variants. The rest I don't use... The OP just needs to try it out for himself a couple days and then make his decision.

Thanks for the replies. Just trying to get a feel for it since I probably would not buy an s3 if I didn't think I could get a good aosp-based experience. Sounds like I probably can though

Oh btw, can anybody confirm whether CM10's notification LED controls work on the T-mo GS3? I read that Lightflow doesn't work properly with the GS3 and I'm wondering if CM10's LED controls make it so I don't even need to use Lightflow.

Yeah it works. When I get Facebook messages it flashes green, when I get text messages or kik messages it flashes white. Low battery, flashes red, charging solid orange until 90 percent and then solid green to 100. I'm on paranoid android

Will do. It might be a week or so though b/c it prob won't arrive til Monday, then I prob won't have time to root and install CM10 until next Saturday. Fingers crossed I'm as happy as most of you guys seem to be! I love AOSP-based roms.
if you have all the right files downloaded and odin ready you should be able to install cm10 in about 20 minutes to be honest.

One thing in CM10 on GS3 I can't get to work is the TV out - I really wanted to try the new MHL adapter I bought, but cannot get the picture on the TV.
T999/CM10
Got my GS3 yesterday. Had rooted and flashed TWRP through Goo Manager within 10 minutes. Installed CM10 (currently using the default kernel) + Gapps shortly thereafter. Initial impressions are that it is pretty solid. I've had a few little hiccups, like when I first installed a weather widget it told me it could not find my geolocation, but a reboot seemed to fix that. The first time I tried GPS, my GPS wouldn't turn on at all (i.e., didn't even get a little GPS icon in the status bar). But again, a reboot seemed to fix that and GPS has worked each time I've tried it since. Wifi is fine. All apps seem to run fine. Notification LED seems to work fine, although I haven't really set it up to my liking yet. Haven't tried Bluetooth yet... don't really use it that much anyways. It's only been about 12 hours so far but I'd say everything pretty much works as expected.
My initial thought is that CM10 + GS3 is a pretty darn good alternative to Nexus 4, especially considering the battery and thermal throttling issues the N4 seems to have for the time being (not to mention, the availability issues that the N4 is having ).
Speaking of battery, my GS3 arrived with about a 55% charge. After I messed around with it for a bit, rooted, and installed CM10, I was at about 45%. That 45% lasted 13 hours and got me 2.5 hours of screen on time. If that translates to a full charge, it would be 5+ hours screen-on time and 24+ hours off charger.
So, overall, pretty darn pleased. But again, only got about 16 hours of use under my belt. Assuming no unexpected bugs pop up and it continues to work as well as it has so far, this will easily be my daily driver for the next 6+ months.
Edit: Oh, the one other problem I encountered is that Gapps didn't seem to flash properly. I flashed CM10 and then immediately flashed Gapps from goo.im. But when I booted up, the only Gapps that had actually installed were Play Store and Google Talk. So I just downloaded the rest of the ones I needed (Gmail, Maps, Google Music, etc.) from the Play Store. So other than being somewhat odd, it hasn't caused any problems as far as I can tell.
Wow... good for you about the battery life. I just got the phone and still unroot. As long as i unplug it from the charger, it drops 1-2% right away. Yesterday it lasted for about 8 hrs with ~2hrs screen on.

That sounds unusually bad... You might post a thread seeking help. I think stock Rom generally gives pretty good battery.
So it happens that I rooted my S3 two days ago and flashed with CM10.0.0 stable and then added gaps. Interestingly I had the same “issue” as the OP did, it only installed few and the applications and apps like Gmail I had to download from the store. Looking at the gaps file its possible they only meant to flash with thinks like Play Store, Calendar, address book / people, syncing protocols etc. but I don’t know this for sure. I did not have any other issues with the phone’s Bluetooth (user in a car for phone and for streaming music), wifi, or GPS all seems fine.
I had trouble however with setting up my external SD Card so that both, the phone and the CWR could read/write to it. Most seems not to care whether they use the build-in SD Card or external one but I wanted to have backups and other items on my external 64GB card.
Please post screen shots or data about your battery. I was told that with CM10 my battery supposed to last a lot longer than with Stock but I have not exorbitance it yet. With typical use (I think) my phone last for about half a day (12-14 hours or so)

SGN II Signal

hey
i am sorry if this thread was posted before, but since i didnt find it so i decided to post it over here....
since 5 months im using SGS3 and in the area i am living i got only one or two points out of the signal which means that my signal bar is not full i almost have 1/4 of signal, while my wife's htc is almost full...
my neighbor also confirm this issue he was on S3 also and said the same, when he moved to LG Nexus 4 the bar is totally full !!!
So i, moved to SGN II and the same issue low signal bar !!!
But since a month and i am tracking this issue, i almost tried all the Roms on here all the radios i have found and all are the same low signal...
so i started to believe that it is a samsung issue... BUT when ever i flash CM, AOSP, AOKP, or MIUI on more than 3 phones i got the full bar of signal !!!
i thought for a moment that it could be not real, just the bar look like that, but after comparing the the signal strength , the calling quality, and the 3G speed... i really discovered that no...it is totally better
So thats means it is not samsung issue ( as hardware ) it is an software issue....and till now trying to figure out the difference between samsungs software and the rest cm and etc
so have any one of you noticed this issue, any one have an idea about it ??? any one managed to fix it ?
This section isn't for questions, the Q&A is.

those on the back cover are for nfc not antenna but in all cases even if they were..... the full reception is only on roms that are not based on stock or on samsung ui
When I first got this phone the reception was similar to Galaxy nexus but after having it a full month I think it is a lot better. You could always try flashing another radio. I am on a UK radio in north america and it works well.

I suppose the highly good reception on AOKP CM MIUI will result also in an increased level of S.A.R.
Maybe I am wrong but I prefer lower speed instead of a fried brain.
