GPS signal quality on AOSP? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi, coming from a Samsung Epic 4G Touch and am considering picking up an S3 for my upgrade. I just have one question I wasn't able to find an answer to while searching: do you notice a drop in signal quality on your GPS between Touchwiz and, say, CM10?
On my E4GT (bought on the release date), I notice a pretty dramatic drop in GPS accuracy when I go to any of the AOSP-based ROMs and just want to make sure this isn't an issue before I make the jump. Way fewer satellites on GPS Test, that sort of thing.
I'd also be curious about any thoughts on the GPS performance of the GS3in general, too. I use the car navigation a lot, as well as some tracking apps for cycling and running.
Thanks for any help!

[Q] Galaxy nexus GPS unstable accuracy

Hello,
I have been through hell and back trying to get this GPS to work consistently. I am using the GSM version. Tried all 4.0.1 through 4.0.4 stock, then roms (aokp, cm, foxhound) with different kernels and radios too.
Also tried apps like Gps status/ fasterfix/ gpsfix .... Changed the satelites in gps.conf manualy.....
First my problem is the GPS gets signal from sattelites, usualy around 6-7. The accuracy is max 15 feet. Thats WITH wifi on... Without I get 5 max, and the signal is so inconsistent, that when driving it will randomly throw me on other roads, the speed is all wrong, basicaly its not usable as a gps device.
I have also returned it on warranty, but all they did is switch languages (???), as I had latest stock.
Do you guys have any tips and tricks on what else I can do. I have been searching forums forever, only found 1 guy with the same problem, and his fix was geting another phone
Presently I am selling my nexus, I dont want to, as Its the best phone Ive had so far, but this is ridicilous from a "flagship" device.
Weird, my nexus locks on fast and is very accurate. Only thing is can say is get a replacement, which you've tried.

So there is no hope?
Meh my damn luck
Mine is pretty accurate down to the traffic direction, but occasionally jumps to the opposite direction, but always stays on the road.
There are much more user with the same problem as you. I also have this problem and tried a lot go fix it and atm it is not solved.
My GPS is also very jumpy. On my first gn device it also lost the GPS signal very often while driving.
To demonstrate this issue I uploaded a video on YouTube in comparison to my old nexus one. Just search for galaxy nexus vy nexus one GPS. Its an in car video.
Now I got my second device, GPS is better now but often very jumpy. It fixes the same amount of satellites as my nexus one but it is far away from being accurate.
I can not say if this is a hardware or a software problem, for me it is a reason to change the device soon. The HTC one x also seems to have a bad GPS so maybe the s3, which also supports Glonass, is the way to go.
If you get it fixed pls let us know!

Oh man, I read your posts on the forums, and saw your youtube video. Thought u said that you fixed the issue after the third replacement?
So One X has the same problems? Damn.... I do not know what to get then, whens the s3 comming out?
With my new device it is much better but can not beat my nexus one in any way.
The S3 is announced to be released in Europe on the 29th of May. Preorder 599 Euro.

Seems like Samsung just sux when it comes to GPS. I was hoping the galaxy nexus would have addressed these issues, then the S2....I'm thinking my next phone will be Motorola...they are usually excellent with GPS functionality.
Samsung, this is unacceptable for a phone that costs more than a high end tablet!
[email protected] you and the ship you sailed in upon Samsung!

Oh here we go, another one with a "buttery smooth" perfect Unicorn GNEX.
Come on people, we all know a "buttery smooth" Gnex does not exist. The AOKP roms are as fast and smooth as you're going to get but you will always find a time, situation, app or website, or indeed functionality like the dodgy sat nav, to trip up anyone pretending to have a "buttery smooth" Nexus.
I have awful problems with the GNex with gps, and regardless of Rom, it just doesn't improve.
Saving up for something that works.

Mines buttery smooth, is mine a unicorn?
All jokes aside, mines pretty smooth, and get great GPS locks.
One thing I noticed was that, on pure stock and any AOKP from M5 to now, great GPS lock, always using Franco M3.
But when I tried SlimICS, horrible GPS locks, accurate to about 250 ft. -_-

GPS is extremely bad!!
My Galaxy 1 was so much more accurate. When running, average speed is off by at least 1 km/h. Fail!

[Q] Thinking about getting an SIII, are there any issues?

I'm having a lot of data issues with my HTC One S on T-Mobile US, so I'm thinking about getting an SIII. I can either do a warranty exchange on my One S but the SIII looks like it can outperform the One S so here I am.
I wanted to know if there have been any issues with the SIII? From the various threads I've seen, there doesn't appear to be any but I just wanted to ask current users. I'd like some input on:
stock ROM performance (although I will root eventually)
data connectivity (data network and wifi)
camera performance
battery performance
GPS performance
how your root experience was (easy, difficult, issues laden?)
any gotchas?
Also, what's the difference between the 2 development threads? Why is one called Original and the other is not?
Many thanks

stock ROM performance (although I will root eventually)
A. Amazing! The new touchwiz is smooth and very stable, it's partially the reason why I always go back to stock based roms.
data connectivity (data network and wifi)
A. It depends on where you live but I haven't had any issues with data at all, it's reasonably faster than it was on my Galaxy S2 so no complaints there!
camera performance
A. I think the camera is one of the best on the market, photo's are very sharp and clear from my experience.
battery performance
A. The battery on this device is good, I can make it through a day easily with moderate use.
GPS performance
A. I don't use GPS very much so I can't give you a good answer to that one but I haven't heard any complaints about it.
how your root experience was (easy, difficult, issues laden?)
A. My root experience was great, if you had a Galaxy S2 and rooted it, it's basically the same thing. If not it's still very basic if you follow the instructions correctly.
any gotchas?
A. Not sure what this means, if your talking about issues or something like that then I have one:
- The device can get warm from time to time when using data for long periods of time, other then that I haven't had any issues with phone.
I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking to get a new phone!
Only problem I have is it warms up from heavy data use from time to time. Stock ROM was wonderful but I finally flashed cm10 last night to see how it is. I couldn't believe it but the phone became even faster Haha I highly recommend this phone
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Stock ROM: Nearly perfect. It's fluid. It's fast, it's useful. And you can switch most things on or off without rooting. You can get a newly Aosp experience without root.
Data: As good as any other recent phone. Data completely relies on where you live. The s3 will not give you any problems.
Battery: Good or very good. The phone lasts about 20 hours with moderate usage. It can easily hit 2 days with light usage. Jelly bean currently has no bugs but it does drain the battery slightly more than ics. Expect 17 hours average on jelly bean.
Gps: Best in class. Locks instantly, consistently within 20 seconds cold boot.
Rooting: Rooting is easy and takes 3 minutes.
CAMERA: Same as the iPhone 4s but i do believe the software is better. Pictures are some of the best for a smartphone. Only a few phones best it but it is not by much.
Other: Phone is ready for wireless charging of you want to solder 2 wires on it. Also, i have heard reports that the screen cracks on some drops so be warned and careful.
Overall. Super fast, super reliable, has bugless jelly bean,

I have the sgs3 and I absolutely love it. Was on stock form late July till about 2 weeks ago and it seemed to perform just fine. I'm not huge on the TouchWiz interface of the past but this one wasn't so bad. Was never at a loss for power even though we didn't get the Integra (le sigh). Here in Chicago the data is always smooth but I spend some time in rural WI, so up there it could be better but that is more local then phone performance related. The Camera was outstanding. Girlfriend has the HTC One S and she was a little jealous of the camera by comparison. I had a very smooth root transition and I did it about a week after I got the phone, now I can only imagine it will be smoother for you. Flashed to the cm10 nightlies and I have had a few issues but nothing that was major. Not to mention Cyanogen himself is developing on the T999 which is awesome. Only issues that I would be aware of is that when I rooted my phone there were some issues with people losing their IMEI... but that has mostly been cleared up if you search around the forums. I think it had something to do with people rooting for the international version instead of the US Carrier version. Not sure but I didn't encounter it. Best phone I have ever had. Like it even more then my old G2 that I refused to get rid of till it finally crashed.
Please don't get it.
The only issue I have had is the dirty looks from Apple fan boys

Stock works just perfect its stable and such however i notice that when data is turned on the phone gets a little bit hot but nothing too serious...
Battery life is okay 22hs unplugged and 3h30minutes screen on time ..
I dont see any major issues camera is really good in bright area but when it gets very dark whit no flash camera is taking pics whit lot of noise but its very responsive ..

You should be proud.. that you have a phone that doesn't break apart in the box during shipping.
My first S III had a dent in the metal beneath the battery and the second one had a significant scratch in the speaker grill. My third one was just assembled loosely or the pieces didn't fit together well so there were gaps in the seams under the battery cover and all three of these had poorly calibrated displays because white images appeared to be slightly yellow at times so I wouldn't poke fun at Apple if I were you...
4th one's the charm though. I'm happy with this one.

The GS3 is the best phone I have ever had. Don't have any problems. Only thing I miss is no FM radio.
Yes it leaks.
Best phone period.
Well, until the next big thing arrives
-stock ROM performance (although I will root eventually)
Rooting doesn't necessarily mean that you have to switch ROMs, but anyways, stock ROM seems to use a bit more battery than lets say CyanogenMod but other than that, I enjoy the motion controls on the stock rom. I always have better bars than my friends and everything works like a charm
- data connectivity (data network and wifi)
wifi and data both work well. one time I had a problem where data wasn't working that well but i fixed it by reverting back to stock kernel.
-camera performance
i love taking pictures with the camera. the features are pretty enjoyable too. my aunt really loves the "beauty" feature on the camera where it clears up blemishes and makes you look really nice 8D really enjoy being able to take pictures while recording video as well.
- battery performance
typical day I can get 4 hours of screen time in the full day. that is with some light gaming, lots of texting and some social networking. pretty good for a heavy user. my old phone nexus s, would always get low battery and I would have to watch my usage.
- GPS performance
before i switched carriers, I had unlimited data on mobilicity so that worked really well with the GPS. I could always locate myself and sometimes when I wasn't too sure about the area, i could pull up google maps and it would find where I am within seconds.
- how your root experience was (easy, difficult, issues laden?)
rooting the s3 was pretty simple. It just involved using Odin to flash a custom recovery and then installing superuser. it was a lot easier than my nexus s where I had to use adb and fastboot
- any gotchas?
there is the occasional lag and glitch here and there but then again after rooting you can't expect everything to run perfectly. hopefully you get the s3 and enjoy

SGN II Signal

hey
i am sorry if this thread was posted before, but since i didnt find it so i decided to post it over here....
since 5 months im using SGS3 and in the area i am living i got only one or two points out of the signal which means that my signal bar is not full i almost have 1/4 of signal, while my wife's htc is almost full...
my neighbor also confirm this issue he was on S3 also and said the same, when he moved to LG Nexus 4 the bar is totally full !!!
So i, moved to SGN II and the same issue low signal bar !!!
But since a month and i am tracking this issue, i almost tried all the Roms on here all the radios i have found and all are the same low signal...
so i started to believe that it is a samsung issue... BUT when ever i flash CM, AOSP, AOKP, or MIUI on more than 3 phones i got the full bar of signal !!!
i thought for a moment that it could be not real, just the bar look like that, but after comparing the the signal strength , the calling quality, and the 3G speed... i really discovered that no...it is totally better
So thats means it is not samsung issue ( as hardware ) it is an software issue....and till now trying to figure out the difference between samsungs software and the rest cm and etc
so have any one of you noticed this issue, any one have an idea about it ??? any one managed to fix it ?
This section isn't for questions, the Q&A is.

Don't have answer to your question but I agree that I've had pretty poor reception on the Note 2 as well.
Surely there is s fix. I did notice two small contacts on the back cover .... ? antenna

those on the back cover are for nfc not antenna but in all cases even if they were..... the full reception is only on roms that are not based on stock or on samsung ui
When I first got this phone the reception was similar to Galaxy nexus but after having it a full month I think it is a lot better. You could always try flashing another radio. I am on a UK radio in north america and it works well.

I suppose the highly good reception on AOKP CM MIUI will result also in an increased level of S.A.R.
Maybe I am wrong but I prefer lower speed instead of a fried brain.

Best ROM for best reception?

I just got an S3. Yikes.
Even with a solid Wifi signal streaming is very choppy. On voice calls, this is the first phone I've ever had that drops calls mid conversation from home. And I've had a lot of phones on my three lines over 13 years here. Finally, LTE reception in L.A. is not great which is a problem because the phone takes too long to switch off LTE to 3G so I find that I often have no data connection at all even though solid 3G signal is available.
I tried all kinds of tweaks to make the WiFi work better (static IP, different bandwidths, etc) and nothing worked.
Sprint kept telling me to exchange my handset so I'm on my third one and had the same problem with all three.
I'm running out of time on my 14 days so hoping for some ROM guidance so I don't have to kick the tires with a bunch of ROMs trying to find the best performance. I don't want to feel like a beta tester so please only recommend stable ROMs. Don't really care about anything other features, in fact I kind of like to keep it simple. I just want stability and solid wireless performance.
Thanks in advance.

I'll ask the obvious question: Did you update your phone with all the OTAs since it came out of the box?
If not, do this, then compare.
There are pockets in LA that have spotty reception, and you may live/work in an area. For me, I work in Downtown and get solid reception with no dropped calls, even in a building which is a nightmare for all network carriers.. I enjoy the AOSP built ROMS, but they seem to create signal problems with phones. So I suggest staying away from those.
I do recommend MIJJz 4.1.2 ROM which is a Sprint leak of the latest build. My phone seems to get improved reception quality and data signal strength. Up until I switched to MIJJz ROM it would take up to 30 seconds in my work building to get updates on Tweetcaster. Now, I get updates in mere seconds. For example, I've been able to keep up on all the football recruits who have signed with UCLA today, including Kylie FItts signing. Good luck to you.
GO BRUINS!!!
BOOM!!!

The evo lte will be a waste of time cuz its identical hardware to the s3 as far as radios and soc. I do not have the issues that you or op speak of. Streaming videos is hit or miss cuz of the server not the phone or wifi. Maybe it could be router and wifi only in the instance if the video you are streaming is not in a web browser and the router and wifi access point dont like the ports the stream is trying to use and keeps re negiotiating.
I came from the evo lte, I dropped more calls on that than on my gs3.
Download and install the MA4 modem. You will get the best reception out of TW ROMs. I'm on MOAR and it is great. I also have gotten great reception on The Peoples ROM and Darth Stalker. Any of the TW ROMS should be good. I received very poor reception on AOSP ROMs though. Also make sure your PRL and Profile are updated. Most likely it is Sprint and not the phone though. A ROM cant make something out of nothing. I know my area is receiving upgrades and I went from 1 bar always at my house to 3-4 just in the last couple of weeks.

I've never had any issues with reception only on aosp ROMs but I would suggest getting darthstalker ROM and flashing the MA4 kernel it offers the best signal on any ROM I've had and believe me I've flash almost all and above that you get the best battery life and has some pretty good signal and data speed tweaks

I second the MA4 suggestion, you can try the stock or stock+root variant in the development section, I'm getting improved reception and speeds since moving to it.
Also, do some searching for the thread which tells you how to bypass the sprint proxies , that improved my music streaming performance over 3g as well.

actually on the contrary, my experience has been fantastic with Evo Lte
it never lost the signals and data (3G ) was practically double.
occasional low memory and the fascination of BLACK to be black brought me to s3 .
a couple of my friends also say that their LTEs are way better as far as reception and data speed are concerned.
TBH i am still trying to find a way to not let my s3 lose reception here and there.
Though its pretty new but i guess i might try darthstalker's with ma4 kernel

[Q] Are there known issues with this device? GPS, etc?

I have a ton of phones. I always seem to hit issues with them (lack of developer support, no updates, something non-working, etc).
I want to have at least Android 4.1+ (so falling back to carrier-provided Gingerbread is not something I want to deal with).
Two of my most recent devices are the SGH-T959V (Galaxy S 4G) and SGH-T959 (Galaxy S Vibrant). Issues with those seem to be with the GPS. I've read that it just doesn't work right on the Vibrant, and I know it doesn't work on the S 4G. Falling back to Android 4.0 on the S 4G gets the GPS to work, but then its 2.x kernel has issues sleeping, and I've had issues making calls (I couldn't hear the other person!). The S 4G also has never had an "official" release of CyanogenMod, AOKP, etc. These devices have blown me away with how speedy they seem, but lack of functional software just turns me off.
What about the SGH-T989? Does this phone "just work"? What are the known issues?
in my opinion all SAMSUNG phones have weak GPS chips there is always something extra you have to flash if you are running a custom ROM, the best GPS you will ever get will be staying on a stock device, every phone runs different so you would just have to check for yourself if the GPS is up to par with your standards. i don't use GPS much so i don't really rely on it much but can understand where you are coming from
This phone is quite good in terms of build quality. There are tons of awesome ROMs, mods, etc. for this phone. Cyanogenmod supports it, Aokp supports it. My only problem with it is battery, which, for me only last around 8 - 10 hours. But I am a heavy user, with several email accounts pushing, and games.
I use the GPS from time to time. It picks up the GPS signal usually quite fast. There is also a hack available to speed up the lock on. If I recall correctly, the original stock rom had an issue with the compass orientation, so it will start off weird in the beginning when you use maps, but will self correct after a bit. I have changed so many ROMs, and I don't think I see this issue anymore.
Watch for that sticky power button... It's devastating :what:
But I'd get the sii for sure it's a great phone. Even greater people
