you either use fastboot to flash cwm.img, or you use your currently installed recovery to update it.

Use Rom Manager, or flash it manually on the extisting recovery

Go in to fastboot mode, type: fastboot flash recovery imagename.img
This assumes you have fastboot and adb drivers installed and working.

i hope you make a nandroid backup, and restore system and boot
You should *always* flash a superuser package (I used JB-SuperSU.zip) immediately after flashing a stock update - no reboot in-between! The stock update overwrites your recovery, so if you don't do it first thing you won't have another chance.
You're going to have to get to a computer with fastboot and reflash the custom recovery of your choice via fastboot, then boot into the custom recovery and flash a superuser.zip of some nature. You'll also want to delete /system/etc/install-recovery.sh (via adb or a file manager if your custom recovery supports it) before booting the ROM again or else your recovery will be overwritten again.

1- update cwm to 6.x or twrp to 2.2beta
2- file that restores stock recovery on reboot is /system/recovery-from-boot.p

Problem with fastboot
Hi. I have padfone2. I have rooted it and all was fine. i removed some stock apps and before installing recovery and backing up the phone i did factory reset. Now the phone shows asus logo then shows android logo with progress bar and few seconds later it reboots and does it again and again. I want to flash a custom rom so i started the phone in fastboot with power/volume buttons. All the screen shows is "Fastboot!!!" at the top of the screen and asus logo somewhere in the middle. I flashed suggested twrp with "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" from the cmd and it looked ok. When I rebooted the phone it went straight into the loop again. When I start it in fastboot mode there is no menu or anything else to start the recovery. What do I need to do to open it. Please help. Thanks.
This is the one V forum so I don't know what you can flash, but when your phone restarts (boot loop) you must have flashed a wrong kernel. To reboot into recovery connect the pad to the pc and type in cmd "adb reboot recovery" then just flash the right kernel, you have to find that on your own, check the thread of the rom you are trying to use

[Q] Ruined my Recovery Mode?

Hi everyone.
I was able to successfully unlock the bootloader and root the phone.
However, I have trouble trying to get into the Clockwork Recovery Mode. Every time I try I just get a message saying that this is a special distribution and some other legal stuff. I can't get into recovery mode.
Anyone else have this problem and fix it? If so, how so? I would like to install some custom ROMs.
Have u flashed the recovery in fastboot?. The screen with red letters is normal.it shows u have installed custom firmware on ur phone.

I believe I have. I have also done it via the Clockwork Mod app.
How would I go about making backups and installing custom roms?
For that u have to flash custom recovery. Flash it again...
Download appropriate recovery.img for ur phone. place it in fastboot folder.rename it recovery.img.go into fastboot n connect phone 2 pc.it should say fastboot USB. Now use command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img while in fastboot( not in boatloader screen).

I think I did that. But I will try again

Did it twice, unfortunately all I get is the disclaimer instead of the Clockword Mod recovery options. I can't even do a factory reset.
Here is what I used:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1635520
Still doesn't work.
If you flashed the clockworkmod recovery.img via fastboot and it says successful it should be on there. The HTC disclaimer boot screen is normal. You must boot into the bootloader and select recovery to get into clockworkmod.
The only recovery I can get working is Team Win. I Unfortunately after I install a rom it either freezes at the disclaimer or the rom reboots the system. The I can't even restore the stock recovery.
Any advice?

TWRP is more convenient than clockworkmod for this particular phone in my opinion. When flashing rom don't forget you have to flash boot.img (kernel) from the rom (usually extracted from the zip). If your having problems with roms you may have to RUU back to stock.

Gnex bootloping.. help please!!

Hello guys.
I'm with this problem that the phone don't pass the google logo.
I0ve tried flashing 4 diferent roms -xenon HD. cm11, etc and all of them dont boot. (flashes normally with wipe and all).
Also tried flasing diferent CWM, tried CWM 6.0.4.7 and 6.0.4.8 and TRMP 2.7 and still happens the same...
I noticed that before flashing new rom (had 4.1.2 on TWRP 2.3) the phone had that gallery problem that cannot open camera algo, could be possible that camera module dont let the phone boot??
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
cheers

Nexus root toolkit: http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
Factory images: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Flash 4.3 android
For flashing factory images you don't need custom recovery, but for ROMs you NEED it!
NO toolkit please.. Just manually use fastboot. No offense to the devs though.

Guys, worked like a charm. Thanks a lot!! really appreciate it
For anyone who's in the same situation:
1. install ADB/fastBoot on your pc and install phone drivers
2. put the phone in fastboot mode
3. flash stock image file from link posted above
4. boot phone
5. Done
If you want to flash custom rom right away
6. download cwm 6.0.4.7 or above
7. flash recovery via fastboot (fastboot flash recovery recoveruFileName.zip)
8. enter recovery mode
9. flash new rom
p.s. to put files on phone, you0ll need to install twrp recovery instead, the in that recovery, enter advanced mode, then command line, select sd card then press select on right bottom corner. To transfer files go to command line on pc and pass files like: adb push fileNameAndPath.zip /sdcard
Cheers

Thank you for replying, can you just explain how? and what is the latest valid rom that I can get to my Desire HD?
Thank you again

You have to extract the boot.img from the zip you are trying to flash inside the folder you have fastboot. Then you give the command fastboot flash boot boot.img to flash the new kernel.
You could also install 4EXT recovery and use smartflash as long as you are s-on.
Thanx a million for all.. I will try to do that today and will forward the results.
Thanx again
ONE QUESTION:
shall I connect the devise at the buginning or after flashinf the boot comand? and in what status the devise should be connected (fastboot or recovery)?
Another thing: as Im running windows, my PC is recognizing the device imidietly, so do I still hav to install any drive from htcdev ? and what drive is that ?
Sorry for that but as I said before, Im a little noob in this..
Thanx in advance..
OK, here are the results:
did the tutorial to the letter as in the link, everything went well till the end, after that I restarted the devise and simply it goes to recovery?
now everytime I restart the devise it goes to recovery automatically?

I told you to install 4ext if you like!
4ext is a recovery with the ability either you are S-ON or S-OFF user can flash for you any kernel you like with smart flash.
What you probably did was to flash this recovery as kernel for your device. If you want to install this recovery you have to install it to recovery partition using fastboot flash recovery {your recovery.img}.
If you want to make your rom working again you have to extract the boot.img file from the zip you was trying to install using recovery and you flash it manually using fastboot flash boot boot.img or you could use 4ext to flash it with smartflash but it would be better if you installed it first to the recovery partition (If you use 4ext now you probably have to make a full flash of your rom except if you find only the kernel in a zip or you have an older nandroid backup with the right kernel to restore).
** You have to enable smartflash only if you are S-ON.If you S-OFF your device you should disable this feature. **

Just extract the boot.img of the rom zip you was trying to install in the folder you have the fastboot and then install it using the command fastboot flash boot boot.img while you are in bootloader.
Don't be confused with 4ext.This is just a recovery like cwm.
