I work on the border of Texas and Mexico; the stock ROM, which I'm currently running, does not have the ability to select which phone network to connect to, so if the Texas tower is weak and the Mexican one is strong, I'm on International Roaming, which is not cheap!
I've turned off Intl Call Roaming for now, but what happens is that the phone still gets 'captured' by the Mexican signal, I just don't have any service at all.
The stock ROM allows turning off data roaming, but not voice roaming [that menu item is grayed out]. I'm considering rooting and installing a custom ROM; if anyone call tell me which ROM(s) allow network selection, I'd much appreciate it.

Hi,
Tomorrow I'm going out of town for two weeks to florida, and ive checked the coverage map for tmobile, and it says there's no signal for tmobile where i'm going. How would I be able to connect to att's signal, or is that even possible? Thanks if You guys can help!
Ask your operator (-T-mobile) if he has roaming agreements with another operator in the area you will be. If so then the device will hook to the network there automatically. You will notice a new symbol on the status line at the top looking like a triangle - indicating that you are in a "foreign" network.
Mind that tarrifs are much higher if you are hooked to a "foreign" network. Usually also terminating calls cost you then.
I'm in the area now, and there's absolutely no signal whatsoever. Apparently there is roaming agreements here. My zip code where I'm at right now is 32346 (Panacea, FL). In network seletion it shows that AT&T is available as a network to select, but when I select it, it says "Cannot save settings, verify that You have network coverage or if the settings are available" Or simply, "No cell availabe''. Whats upi with this?
You say there is no signal but you can select a network?
I suspect that the default network for (T-Mobile) does not deliver a signal - which seems obvious as they do not supply coverage where you are.
When you go to select another network it usually shows you the available networks which HAVE a signal - otherwise they are not listed. You can however not tell how good the signal is (I suspect the best are listed at the top) and if you are at the edge your login may fail due to this.
I suggest you set the network selection to "automatic" and keep the device with you when you move around. It should login the network once the signal is strong enough. Be patient though - the retry to login is done in a minutes interval range to save battery. To check the network signal strength you could find people that have a phone and are logged in the AT&T network. Or go to an AT&T shop and ask there.
it doesn't matter which network your phone picks up here in florida, unless you have it unlocked and with an att simcard it won't matter, is not like when I went up north to canada with my dash, that even though it was roaming it picked up rogers , I live in a weak area for tmobile, I had to go outside my house when I had my dash , 'cause it wouldn't get a signal indoors, and it would show att indoors on my phone but it would never let me do anything , calls, text, or anything, I would have to go outside and let it find tmobile before I would be able to use it.
Hello everyone
We will be moving close to the border soon and I noticed our devices (my wife also has a Desire Z, though it is stock) tend to connect to services from across the border.
Now having turned off data roaming, this isn't that big of a deal but roaming calls still cost more this way AND I can't use navigation because data roaming is deactivated.
Now I know I can set my preferred service provider, but can I also lock it (meaning: turn off roaming completely) so I have to manually allow roaming to accur when, and only when, I truly need it?
If you go to Wireless and networking settings you can select "mobile networks", the same screen you select dataroaming...
you can select your mobile provider I think that when you select Search for network and you select one network it won't automatically select a new one if your connection gets low.
That's what I thought, too, but in reality, it didn't really work. Although I have received a hint that it might only work if mobile data was deactivated at that moment. I'll try this thursday... let's see what happens.
What radio do we use with Wind on the t989... I am in Burnaby Vancouver.. and I am told that Wind has away mode and home mode.... This is confusing as it determines what we pay.
Also when you flash a jellybean Rom it no longer sees the carrier as Wind Home and Wind Away with proper transitions instead I simply see Wind Mobile....
Also I want to really unlock good signal strength and if I am lucky better speeds but all I know to do is use UVLH5 and use *#*#4636#*#* and select CDMA/LTE which takes me to WCDMA preferred ... but most people say that I sound like I am in a tunnel if I am standing next to window... it isn't until I actually go outside that the phone actually works !!!!
Anyone else having problems ?

I'm not sure about your first issue with the away mode thing, however, I do know that if you go into dialer and press menu then go to settings and check noise suppression it makes things sound a lot better.
I don't live in Canada, but I'm guessing that Wind Home is for home internet, phone service, etc. Wind Away is just like any other carrier for mobile phone service. On JB ROMs if it says "Wind Mobile" that's fine. That's the name of the company. The reason you might not be getting good service is because the UVLH5 is meant for some certain phones on T-Mobile, the Blaze 4G especially. In order to get better service/signal/call quality, try flashing a radio meant for the T989D which is the Canadian variant of the T989. You can also enable noise suppression.

While oddly enough the carrier would switch from "Wind Home" to "Wind Away" prior to jellybean. I have tried the T989D modem but never get better reception. Does that make sense ? It always would go into radio off mode where you would have zero bars and no matter how many times I reset the phone the radio had no response... Weird...

I guess you should keep trying different radios and see when one starts to work. It could also be the ROM's fault.

| live in Richmond and am with Mobilicity. I am running Liquidsmooth with the Tmobile UVLH1 radio. I've tried other radios but find this one gives me the best reception. Mobilicity doesn't have an "away" mode but I do get the Roaming "R" when I am away from my coverage area. In this instance, I roam on the Rogers network.
I got a SGH-T989D from Telus with TLLE4 radio.
I am a Wind customer in Toronto and I can say that the signal changes. Depends on their cell system. Even if Wind states that it has full coverage in Toronto, I found that during some days I have only 1-2 bars of signal, Other days it goes full.
I assumed that they are still working on their infrastructure.
As others sugested, you can try other radio versions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400
home vs away
WIND HOME = you are connected to the Wind 3G / HSDPA+ network and you have your regular wind rates ( most likely unlimited in your plan )
- wind mobile ONLY has a hsdpa network. no gsm!
WIND AWAY= you are roaming on the rogers network using 2G / EDGE and you are paying per minute roaming rates 20c/min for calls. Your data is $1 a MB i believe, but will only use data if you enable data roaming manually.
If you go to USA it will still just stay WIND AWAY while you are roaming on one of their carriers.
These names come from your sim card, not the phone or radios.
Anyone having problems just connecting to Wind? I'm on CM 10.1 (nightly build) and living in Hamilton... and I have a ridiculously hard time connecting to the network while everyone else I know on Wind (with different phones) can get on almost instantaneously.
I swear I've tried every single radio, and each has little or no difference. It takes literally 5 minutes for my phone to stop searching for networks (I have WCDMA preferred selected) and once I click "Wind Mobile" it takes at least another 30 seconds before it connects to that.
Anyone else experiencing this issue? It's driving me insane!

Unfortunately the same applies here as well (Ottawa) using CM10.1.
If you don't mind loosing signal outside the wind home zone the best settings for a prompt reconnect would be to set it to wcdma only combined with automatic network registration.

I recently switched from AT&T to T-Mobile, and like the rest of us was suffering without 3G due to our lack of compatibility with the 1700MHz WCDMA that T-Mobile uses. One of my friends (a T-Mobile employee), however, informed me that it is indeed possible to get 3G by using the 1900MHz band, which T-Mobile is currently re-farming to support WCDMA. This trick is simple and easy, and I've had success with it thus far, albeit only in one location as of yet. There is a downside, however... as long as the trick is in place (as long as your phone is set to "WCDMA only" below), you cannot connect to EDGE. In other words, in an area where there is no 1900MHz 3G coverage, this process must be reversed to fall back to EDGE. As such, you may lose connection randomly and be completely unaware of it for hours, and I will mock you openly for attempting to blame me if you lose your job because you missed a call from your boss, lose your girlfriend because you stopped texting her, or lose your bacon because your remote bacon-protection app couldn't connect.
Remember, this is in the testing phase. It WILL get better over time and hopefully one day we won't even have to consider whether a phone supports 1700MHz... for now, though, report your findings below, preferably with location, signal strength/type, and down/up speed.
==PROCEDURE==
Go to dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#*
In the menu that pops up, tap "Phone Information"
Scroll down to the menu labelled "Set preferred network type" (it should be the first one) - this will likely be set to WCDMA preferred
Change it to WCDMA only
Switch to your main Settings app, then navigate to "Mobile Networks" (under "More..." by your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth)
Tap "Network Operators" and wait for the search to complete
Tap T-Mobile if it appears in the list
Once the phone has acquired a signal, you can return the Network Mode setting to WCDMA Preferred. Your phone should now switch back and forth between EDGE and HSPA+ fairly reliably.
===My Results===
At my home (approx. Colfax and Yosemite in Aurora, CO) I get 0-2 bars, mostly 3G but some H+ if I'm holding my phone and moving around, and 2-3 bars H+ if I set my phone down. Speedtest results range between 4 and 10 Mbps, with around 90ms ping. I've been keeping my phone set down with wireless tethering enabled, and it's been 100% usable thus far.
--Update--
Having used it daily for a few weeks, I'm pleased to report that there is moderate to good connectivity to at least 3G in most places. I still find myself on EDGE regularly, but I usually can get a WCDMA connection. Now, however, I'm annoyed because I exceeded 5GB data usage and am being throttled to below-EDGE speeds, which defeats the purpose of having 3G. >_<

Almost certainly not; see here.
If you have it working for some reason, go over there to tell everyone.
I'll test this later tonight. I'd be cool with 3G or H+ if it works. I have a T-Mob pay-by-the-day sim card that I'd like to use to tether my Nexus 7 to when I'm traveling (which is fairly rare).
I'm new to all this but how is this different from changing the APN settings?
Is this method better than changing APN settings?
This didn't work for me, Portsmouth, NH. It picked up the T-Mobile network in Network Operators but when I tried to select it it took forever and then said unable to connect, failed to register. Attempted a few times on a ucdlk3 stock based custom rom (Intergalactic II) and also on stock rooted.
Probably just not in a good location for this to work.

I have a G3 D855 International (or is it Taiwanese?) version - running the latest stock LG build, which identifies itself as LRX21R.A1440231662, version V20u-TWN-XX, Kernel 3.4.0, Android 5.0.
I have a Three (UK) SIM, and have recently been in California, where I observed some odd behaviour. I'd be glad if anyone is able to comment or explain any of this!
1) I never saw any 4G (LTE) connections. From other posts in this forum it does appear that this model of G3 may be incompatible with T-Mobile US and AT&T network frequencies, and if so that's understandable.
2) It seemed to have a very strong preference to connect to T-MO, but on that network it would frequently lose data connectivity, despite the phone showing a strong signal. My wife's Galaxy S3, also on Three, would stay connected all the time. If I tried manually searching for networks and selecting either T-MO or AT&T, usually that would restore connectivity. However...
3) Entering manual network selection from this state (connected to T-MO but not getting any data), the phone would display a warning along the lines of "Do you want to search for networks while there is an active data connection?" -- yet there was no data connection icon in the status bar, and no throughput. This feels like some sort of bug - the phone thought it had a data connection but really didn't?
3) Even though I would manually select the AT&T network, and get some throughput, the phone would fairly soon spontaneously reconnect to T-MO, and shortly afterwards again lose data connectivity. This became tedious and frustrating. Other phones I've had have always respected a manual network selection and stuck to the selected network, even when if another available network had a stronger signal. Not so this G3. Is this known, normal behaviour?
The only other thing that may be relevant is that for most of the time I had the phone set to connect only to WCDMA networks, because the data capability of GSM is next to useless, and since I'd not seen any LTE, and WCDMA + LTE only is not an option, WCDMA was really all I was interested in.
