Is there any way to get the GNex to work as a dialup modem? I have wifi and usb tether working but sometimes I would just like to disable data on the phone and just use it as a dialup modem. Is this possible at all? When I switch to modem mode from PhoneUtils (DIAG mode) I can see VIA USB Modem in Device Manager but it does not connect when I try to configure it as a dialup modem. Do I need to do something else to make this work?

Are you referring to actually using a dial-up internet connection like the old AOL or something similar? If so, I don't think that would work at all. Those old modems used analog signals to transmit and being all cell communication is digital these days, I can't see it working. If your computer is detecting it as a modem, it is probably something like a digital modem.
Of course I could be wrong. I doubt there is much on the subject since I doubt many people have ever thought of doing that, lol.

He mean dailing a phone number and setting up a connection using his phone. My old feature phone can do that.
Wow, I suppose it might be possible to do that, but I sure haven't ever seen anyone mention it before. I'm not sure an analog connection is possible on a digital connection.

I used to be able to do this on my Droid Incredible, which had "Internet Connection Mode" when switched on converts the phone to a dialup modem and one can disable data on device and connect on a laptop as if using a normal usb modem. It was not tethering per se. Any clues on this with the GNex?

USB tethering charges the phone slightly and pull data at the same time.

OK. My reason for asking about this is because I do not have unlimited data, like 1.17GB monthly so I was looking for a way to disable data on the phone itself while still being able to use it on my laptop. USB tethering must have data enabled on the phone for it to work, thereby draining my bandwidth with updates, email sync and all other data related stuff running on the phone. All this while my laptop is consuming its own data from the tether. Being able to activate the dialup modem would save me some of that data the phone will be using in the background.
So if I understand correctly you want to disable all on-device data use while allowing tethering.
I don't know that Android allows this. However if you disable auto updates in Google Play and turn off auto-sync, that'll stop your Google accounts from syncing in the background. There are also some (but not all) apps that are programmed to stop syncing when that system setting is disabled.
In Settings > Data Usage you can see which apps consume the most mobile data. If any of them are "out of control" you can restrict background mobile data usage for those apps.

Found the solution. But implementation is cumbersome. *#*#DATA#*#*, Other, Dialup Networking, Enable. If only I could create a shortcut with bettercut... sadly this setting does not appear in bettercut all activities and I do not know the activity name in order to create it from scratch.
I first replied from Tapatalk so I did not see your signature that pointed out you have the CDMA version. The code you mentioned is not present in the GSM version.

Well, you gona pay?
Neat, I didn't know we can do that, even though USB Tethering is easier.
Are there really any pros to doing this over USB Tethering? I remember using this to bypass Verizon's 3G Mobile Hotspot app back in the day, but since rooting to make stock tethering work, I haven't given it any thought...
Edit: does this work in Jelly Bean? I'm not getting anything...

Got it! Installed Nova launcher from Play Store, in widgets drawer you can see Nova Activities. Just select it drag to home screen and a whole lot of activities pop up, choose Dial Up Networking and... Voila... I can use the GNex as a dialup modem. It's neater than USB tether, for those on limited data plans. You only use data on your computer and no data on the phone while you are online on your computer. Really neat!:good:

If you are on Verizon stock ROM you are out of luck. No hidden menus on that ROM. Mine is a Verizon Gnex but running Sprint (Toroplus) CM10 M2 ROM. The Sprint ROMs have the hiddne menus (*#*#4636#*#*, *#*#3282#*#*, etc).
Unless you have special need for Verizon bloatware you can run a Sprint ROM and it works just fine, but you must combine a Sprint CDMA Radio with the Verizon LTE Radio.
Interesting..... so any toroplus ROM works with toro phones as long as we have the Verizon LTE radio flashed? I mean radios don't come with ROMs so am I good to just flash and reboot?

Since you are on Toro ROM already it's most likely you have both Toro CDMA and LTE radios. Just look for a Toroplus CDMA radio and flash via CWM, but please flash a Toroplus CWM first, then you can flash the Toroplus CDMA Radio and a Toroplus ROM.
I know I can't be alone in thinking that flashing a Toroplus radio on a Verizon Gnex is an all around bad idea.

Ive used the method described in the following thread. The best part about how it works is that it offers infrastructure mode, so I can tether my Galaxy Tab without any problems.

I heard that doing the ##778 edit causes a loss of phone data while tethered to the PC. Meaning data on the phone is dead but the pc has data. Is this true? After the edit do you just use the stock 3g mobile hotspot app?

But do you lose data on the phone while tethering? Also do you use the stock vzw app?
The answer to both questions is yes. I actually hadn't noticed it before but on my Dinc2 the signal meter only shows 1X instead of 3G when I activate the hotspot option. I guess I don't find that all too terrible as the only time I'm tethered I'm either using my tablet or my laptop.
Once the change is made, the hotspot app functions like it would if you were subscribed to the service.
What why would you do the hack if you only get 1x when tethering, that would be crazy slow.
Oops, My mistake. It appears my earlier reply was a load of crap!
3G is still clearly visible with hotspot enabled. Just ran a speed test on my Galaxy Tab. Downloads ranged from 473-329kbps with uploads between 303-193kbps.
So just to clarify. You did the following edits.
-in edit mode you will open 'security' and 'm.ip default profile' in turn. each time you look for the only entry containing "dun", as in:
<your actual phone number>@dun.vzw3g.com
edit out the "dun." so it looks like
<your actual phone number>@vzw3g.com
And you then use the stock 3g mobile hotspot app. After you enable the hotspot can you browse using the phone also? Or does internet on the phone stop working.
I think you're right, clarification is certainly in order.
Yes I simply removed dun from both of those locations and now use the standard, VZW included, hotspot app.
The phone cannot access the internet while tethering is enabled. Certainly a sacrifice, but from what I've seen so are the apps available with a rooted device which from my understanding cannot create an infrastructure hotspot, only ad-hoc.
Yeah the phone data loss kinda is a downfall. But I have an infrastructure connection with wireless tether on incredible 1 just for your info. Some apps are lucky and give good connections. well loss of data is probably a sacrifice I will make. thanks
Seems to me that the only time this would really matter is if you're sharing your connection with friends while still using your phone for data. Is there something I'm missing? I can see it being a minor annoyance but something I'd personally never run into.

If the detection is at the app level (unauthorized), like the article suggests, the hack may still be under the radar for the time being since folks are probably using the authorized app pre-installed on their phone.
Hi guys...i just noticed that there is a native option for wifi tethering on the gnex. If i use this is verizon going to charge me ridiculous amounts? I know that the wifi tether app doesn't but will this?
Thanks!! (i know i'm sorta late on figuring this one out )
All carriers are going to charge you if you tether. The key is to do it only when absolutely necessary so you don't draw attention.
I should add I have no idea what app you're talking about, but if you're using a stock ROM, they're going to know immediately that you're tethering.

No custom roms usually disable the feature (Verizon Provisioning Removed) where the information gets relayed back to the carrier and it looks like you're just using data on your phone like any other app. But don't go using 50gb+ a month... might seem a little suspicious.

I believe there may be some noobs on XDA, like myself, who did not know how to set up wifi tethering after root. Here's a quick rundown.
1. ROOT your phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756885)
2. Go to Playstore and download "Wifi tether for ROOT users" (****EXCEPTION BELOW)
3. IMPORTANT!!! go to the app's setting and set the "Change Device Profile" to "GENERIC ICS"
4. there is no step 4.
Save yourself some $$$ instead of paying Verizon a service that should have been free to start off with. :victory:
EDIT: **** buhohitr mentions that you can achieve wifi tethering WITHOUT ROOT through the playstore app "FoxFi"
ENJOY!!!!!

Well... I figured it'll get the most views in the development section so here it is. One thing I might change is getting this in the "Guide" category
Just a note: I've been using this app with really inconsistent results using generic ics profile and auto setup. I've only been able to detect the wifi twice. I read somewhere that turning wifi tether on, let it start up, turn it off, reboot phone, and start up tethering again works somehow. I just tried it and it worked right away but this is only once. I don't know if this will work consistently 100% of the time though
best wifi tethering is just down load Foxfi from the market, installed and bang work like a champ..very reliable.Foxfi work with root and without root.
Thanks, that was a lot easier than I'm used to. Wifi tether worked the first time, and I turned it off and on a few times and it worked everytime.

This is the correct way to do it. choose "galaxy nexus for CDMA/LTE"
also, do not forget to check "routing fix"
this will give you full infrastructure tethering instead of ad-hoc tethering.
what does this mean? It means that your phone will allow things like ipod's , game systems (psp, gameboy..) to connect as well. It will function exactly like a wifi router.
cheers
This could just go in the themes and apps forum technically since all you're doing is installing an app basically... But I guess it's a guide. Thanks for the info OP. For those of you on the new shared data plans, don't even worry about following this guide, the tethering is included in the package because Verizon wants you to use more data and pay overages.
The default tethering app however does support open NAT for Xbox and PSN though which is kinda nice :X (Only wireless tethering root app I got to work with PSN and Xbox for open NAT is barnacle WiFi tether and it was a bit of a pain the butt.)
Free Hotspot on Shared Plan
If you purchased the phone with Verizon After the deadline and lost your unlimited data however, gaining a shared plan, Wifi Hotspot is included in the share data plan at no additional cost. There is no reason to hide your wifi traffic. HOWEVER, I personally find the Wifi Tether app to be better than the default Hotspot app anyway.

You must have meant that this is the correct way for you. When I check "routing fix" or "galaxy nexus CDMA/LTE", my laptop connot see a wifi signal. However, following the OP's post worked like a charm for me. Obviously, it may take a bit of tinkering for people to determine the best setup for themselves.
Is there a way to lower the power of the Wifi from the phone to save power. The range you get when tethering is way further than necessary and it might be better for battery if you could lower the power usage.
Also, is using this rooted wifi tether safer than using foxfi in terms of verizon detecting the use.
How safe are these methods compared to using a power toggle widget to just enable the built-in tethering app? I've found if you try to enable it from the menu, it checks for subscription, but if you use a power toggle app, it "just works."
Edit: One more question....while performing the Wifi pop-up hack, I found an option along the lines of TETHER_ALWAYS_ON. Has anyone tried changing this to a 1?
I believe tethering is more frowned upon than anything else by verizon. I have not heard otherwise, or heard of trouble with big red because of it. However, the "best customer experience" is had when you pay for it. Haha.
Been using Foxfi the last couple of days with no problems. Solid app that works well.
That worked for me, thank u sir

I was having signal go in and out at work all day yesterday, and it turns out Sprint was replacing a bunch of hardware in my area (Atlanta). Now, I cannot get wifi tether to work. My computer will connect, but it will not get internet. Wired tether works fine. I've tried the Sprint Hotspot in Calkulin's 3.0, and also the Hotspot in the ICS Goodness. I've also tried Open Garden, Wifi Tether for Root, and Fox__* (I can't remember the exact name).
It will not connect. Tried different roms, 3g/4g, resetting network ##72382# or whatever that code is, did a complete reset, tried different roms, etc.
The only thing I can conclude is that whatever Sprint updated here locally fixed this loophole for the hacked hotspot. Atlanta is an "A" market, and typically one of the first to get updated, so if this is the case, maybe nobody else is seeing it
Any ideas on what else I can try?? I need this wifi tether desperately.

I am not a dev, nor do I know a lot about anything. I seriously doubt changing tower hardware would "fix" a software workaround in a phone for internet sharing. I don't have an answer as to why or why not, but it sounds highly unlikely. I am speculating the two are not related.

I agree, however, I'm assuming there's also an upgrade in software to go along with hardware changes, and they may have rolled something out at the same time. It could be a coincidence, but I've never had a problem before.

Ok, this is interesting. Do you all know if Wifi tether has always been ad hoc? I thought it used to show up as an AP in Windows.
Also, once I updated SU, my XP would connect to Wifi Tether only, but then tried the Win 7 and gave me the same "unable to connect" box. Now, neither of them work again.
Ideas? How to log, etc?
Do you all know now LAN settings would affect connectivity?
It seems Wired Tether uses 172.20.xx.xxx/30 while I believe the others were using 192.168.2.0 or 192.168.1.1, etc.

I just tried Wifi Tether in netd mode and it worked as Infrastructure. Client was Win7 x64.
Good to know too that I have a backup internet source if the main goes out. Not great but better than nothing.
So I know AT&T, being the disgusting American capitalist corporation that they are, decided to completely disable wireless tethering and make you pay for it with a monthly fee on your bill. This is completely unacceptable if you ask me.
This is a thread to see what Wi-Fi tethering apps you guys are using, with and without root. Hopefully we can get a list going so people can try out some different ones if certain ones don't work for them.
I'm using a completely stock phone, unrooted. Just downloaded FoxFi from their website, and installed the apk on my phone. It's usually available on Google Play but AT&T decided to block it. However, I can confirm that if you download the APK and install it that Wi-Fi tethering works perfectly. I connected my work laptop to my phone just now and used dropbox for a bit, and I also tried a few different websites.

definitely not true.
they can tell by the number of 'hops' that data traffic goes through to the end client. that is how they found me. i was using CM9 (built-in enabled hotspot) for 3 months on my old phone and they finally sent me the "Did you know tethering requires a plan?" text, and sent me a letter telling me I had to stop before X date or they'd change my data plan. when I called in playing dumb they listed off a number of apps that i might have used 'accidentally', which was the list of all the tethering apps i've heard of, and asked if i used them.
IMHO, the only safe way to tether via wifi on an unrooted phone would be to set up ADB via wifi, then use Easytether over that wifi ADB connection. Anything that resembles straightforward "phone as transparent access point" is too easy for carriers to detect. You have to masquerade your traffic, and the more opaque you can make it (say, by further tunneling it over a PPTP or L2TP VPN), the better.
A rooted phone has a few additional possibilities, but they involve completely replacing the tethering app that's bundled with the phone with one that goes out of its way to masquerade your traffic and disguise its wifi-routed origins.
You can also change over to a mobileshare plan. It's saving me a few bucks per month, and tethering is allowed with no additional fee.
"Tethering and/or mobile hotspot use is permitted with Mobile Share plans with capable Designated Devices; provided, however, that such use is limited to a maximum of five (5) simultaneous users per Device." "If you use a tethering and/or mobile hotspot Device with more than five (5) simultaneous users, you agree that AT&T may suspend or terminate service to the account."
So it looks like they're watching for multiple receivers in the traffic and if they see more than 6 (the device itself and 5 attached clients), then it flags.

Foxfi worked perfectly for me up until this latest OTA update and now it won't work at all. Was using Power Toggles to activate it, but this is no longer working. I've been searching for a working replacement for the last few days without any luck so if anyone has found an app that works after the update I would greatly appreciate you sharing the name. Thanks!!
I use wifi tether on a rooted S3. It works pretty well. It has similar options to that of a router.

definitely not true.
they can tell by the number of 'hops' that data traffic goes through to the end client. that is how they found me. i was using CM9 (built-in enabled hotspot) for 3 months on my old phone and they finally sent me the "Did you know tethering requires a plan?" text, and sent me a letter telling me I had to stop before X date or they'd change my data plan. when I called in playing dumb they listed off a number of apps that i might have used 'accidentally', which was the list of all the tethering apps i've heard of, and asked if i used them.

So what app were you using when you got caught? Rooted?
I use the built in CM10 tether.

He was using the built in tethering feature of CM9, which is also part of stock Android.
I use wifi tether. It was the only thing that let me connect to my vpn and tether at the same time.
Haven't used it very much tbh. Maybe 2 hours total in the past couple of weeks. But so far so good
I don't think att would have an idea I was tethering since all the data is going through my vpn and is encrypted.
If they somehow managed to find out, I'm prepared to take them to court and will ask for proof in discovery which would make everything public as far as how they caught me.

Was working...
Hello all,
I have been using this tethering method for a few weeks now, but all of sudden, my phone gets stuck on "Please wait while verifying..." message. It never errors, and I can cancel the process. I have tried to restore the offical tethering files, in hope to get the "Please call blah blah for more information message, but the same result happens too. My phone did recently download a system update, but I haven't allowed it to install. If anyone can shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it.
