[Q] Bloatware-free ICS questions (LT28at) - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Hello,
I just purchased an ion from the interwebski, and updated it to ICS through Sony PC Companion. AT&T sure has a lot of CRAP on this, and I have no option of removing as we all know.
Is it possible to find a clean stand-alone ICS from Sony and install it to the phone? I'll make the comparison of being able to download whatever Apple's new iOS is from their FTP site, and do a shift+leftclick and install that clean OS.
I'm not opposed to rooting the phone if it comes to it, but i'm a little gunshy due to the fact that every rooted android i've ever owned has gone tits-up.
I'm sorry if this is re-post, and thanks a million in advance for any help.
:fingers-crossed:

Root the AT&T firmware and remove bloatware or install generic international firmware (LT28i).
Don't ask how to do either of those as its already been posted.

Thanks for the response. I've been studying the forums and as many related posts for the last few days and I have a few questions. It also seems you are one hell of a source of knowledge for this phone in particular. Here goes:
1.) I cannot unlock my bootloader as per the *#*#service#*#* -- Does this mean I am unable to use CWM? Fastboot?
CM Nightly Discussion =
2.) How can I tell if this is an LTE or HSPDA phone? *I did read your discussion where a guy wasn't able to get a 4G indicator, and you advised him to call ATT and ensure he has the appropriate sim card. I don't see a 3G or 4G indicator on mine either way. I do however get a 4G indicator (but so did my iPhone 4s, which is definitely NOT 4G capable). I pulled this sim from my iPhone 4s and stuck it in this phone.*
I will edit this again later, I have more questions, but for now it's the end of a long day and my brain is fried.

1) you can still get CWM but not fastboot.
2) You said it was an at&t ion right? Then it should be LTE. Don't think the lt28h can flash the lt28at firmware because of the LTE though I could be wrong. Dial *#*#7378423#*#* and go into Servixe info -> configuration and see if you have the LTE bands listed.

Thanks for the reply.
What if I was to just put a different bootloader on the phone?

Go to Settings --> Apps --> All, go to each AT&T app and click Disable.

You need to understand what the generic "4G" is
1. The iPhone 4S is "4G" but not LTE. There's a big difference (3G in my area is 2-3mbps, 4G is 5-6. LTE from people I've seen can be 40mbps+)
2. The 4G icon you see is most likely just HSDPA. Do a speed test. If it's insane high, it's LTE. 10ish or less, it's 4G
3. The LT28at is an LTE capable phone
AT&T and others throw around the term 4G for people like yourself and others who think that "4G" is the fast data. It's faster than 3G but not THAT fast. Think of 4G in reality as 3.5G

How'd that work out? Last time I flashed stuff like that was before ICS out and when I flashed it I messed up somewhere along the line it bricked and I had to send it in for a warranty replacement!

Well, I used bin4ry's rootkit v13 (v12 and v14 didn't work out real well) with Lt28i ICS (courtesy of flashtool).
Sent from my LT28i using xda app-developers app

I flashed the i FW, rooted, flashed CWM and the deodex files then my phone froze and I had to force restart. It was soft bricked and just now is finally to where I can flash it

Lt28h ICS for ATT LTE

Reason for making: I am really bored
So ONLY FOR LT28h ICS flashers. If you did the other LT28i ICS then you are good
a) I expect that you know how to use flashtool and have that in order (since you did flash the LT28h rom XD)
1) download http://dl.xda-developers.com/attach...39b05e/5067c79a/1/2/4/2/3/2/8/LT28at_i_LTE.7z
-------NOTE: I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR THIS. it was made by greatremix http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=2454561
2)Prepare to flash in flashtool
3)deselect everything besides baseband
4)flash and boom you should be up and running (reboot if it gets stuck booting up the first time)
If you think i made a instruction mistake POST i know some people will argue over step 3 but it is what I did
What should this thing do? ...sorry for noobie Question
when one flashes the ICS international (Lt28h) FTF onto their Xperia ion Lt28a(ATT) then the problem is that one does not get the 4g LTE that they pay hard earned money for.
so the reason for this problem is the baseband...which is why i made this post.
(when i first flashed without this info...i started to panic. Dont want anyone to feel like i did for 1 day)

Actually its only if you flash the LT28h ICS. You can always flash the LT28i International ICS and not have to worry about it becuase the LT28i has LTE support. There really isn't a reason to use the LT28h firmware anymore since ICS has been released. It was used before the LT28i and LT28at ICS release to get root and ICS on the LT28i and LT28at
The whole process of using LT28h on the AT&T ion and keeping LTE has been discussed in the Rooting thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812168 but again it isn't really needed anymore.

Just confusing for newer users as they might think they get some benefit out.of using the LT28h firmware opposed to the others.

H+ Displayed Instead of 4G
So, I just flashed to the LT28H ROM and I'm experiencing the same issue that everyone on this thread has seen. I just wanted to confirm that instead of displaying 4G, the phone now displays H+ when connected to a non-LTE network.
Apologies for the noob question.

Thats what happens with the international firmwares. It shows H, H+, then 4G for LTE. AT&T firmware will show 4G, then LTE for LTE networks. That is how it is supposed to be with those firmwares.

2G = Will be shown as G (aka GSM)
3G = Will be shown as H (aka HSPA/HSDPA?)
3G+ = Will be shown as H+ (aka HSPA+/HSDPA+?)
4G = Will be shown as LTE (aka LTE (lol))

I have a LT28at and I am currently using the LT28h jelly bean rooted with the LT28i 3.7 ICS baseband flashed after.
I get
3G = 3G
H/H+ = 3.5G/AT&T 4G
LTE = LTE
For the logos above the signal bars.
I no longer get any 4G logo at all and started seeing the + after H, for the first time on either my X10 or Ion.
Even my wife's Samsung would show the + but not my Sony's til now.
And I have at&t for a carrier.

The LTE replaces the 4G logo if you going from AT&T firmware to other firmware(I.E. LT28H JB FW). It should just show LTE above the bars which means 4G. You can double check if you are actually getting 4G/LTE by doing a speed test. H+ is not 4G. It's just HSPA+. It's two completely different network speeds.
There is no more 4G icon now. Even on the ATT base band it shows H, H+, and LTE. LTE does work as I have been getting 21mb up and 7 down on LTE.

LTE mode on an LT28i won't enable

I have a stock/generic LT28i from Asia. Totally unlocked and all. I'm in the US off and on, so I got a post-paid AT&T plan with data. 3G works great on my HTC One X (European version, meaning no LTE). I popped the SIM in my LT28i and 3G works, but not LTE. If I try to change the network mode to LTE/WCDMA/GSM, it instantly switches back to WCDMA/GSM. If I put my 3 Sweden SIM in the phone, I can set it to LTE/WCDMA/GSM and see [LTE] AT&T in the network search list. So it seems like there's some switch in the software that's forcing LTE off for my AT&T SIM. Any idea what's going on and how I can fix it? I was having issues with my phone bootlooping so I did a full reflash of the generic 6.1.E.2.29.
Is that account setup for LTE with AT&T?

You may need an AT&T 4G LTE compatible SIM card. I had the iPhone 4 with the mini sim and when I got my Xperia ion they told me I needed a new LTE SIM despite the fact that my then current SIM would have fit the in the ion (and they look the same, except my old SIM had the 3G logo on it).
Maybe you current sim is att 3G.
Same thing happened to me a few times. Kept switching to wcdma preferred. Try clearing cache, dalvik and reboot. Eventually I did get it to stick. Also when this happened to me Rogers network was having an lte outage, so that might have had something to do with it. But persistence did pay off in the end.
And yes you obviously do need an lte sim and the lte apn's for whatever network you're on.
Is your APN set correctly?

Ah sorry, I actually gave up and put the SIM in my One X (HSPA-only version) instead. 3G was good enough for my needs. Maybe on my next trip to America I'll put more effort into it.
having the same issue
I'm having the same issue, built I'm on net10, which is supposed to support lte speeds, but i don't get higher than 3g for their att compatible service.
Also, unable to root after phone overheated and did original gb att to gb lt28i, to ics.. the rootme or e4root neither one would work. I've got backups, but they're under titanium backup and cwm, of which neither can i access without root. Is there an .ftf firmware prerooted on ics that doesn't require anything but flashtool to install and add cwm, since I'm sure I'm not the only person with such an issue. If I've overlooked it, direct me to the page where it is, all I've found so far is stock roms, and deodexed, which i can't use.. Also, my boot loader is locked.. I've checked all threads about root and ion, and noon have been helpful with my recent issues..any downloads needed to rectify this and not the usual I've already done that loop back to the same popular pages would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: sorry, i didn't see how old this thread was...and to the above, i'm not sure if what it wrote applies to your network...but most likely you need to look into APN settings required by your carrier...

T-Mobile and AT&T Note 2 cross-compatibility

After a pretty serious amount of searching, I still haven't been able to find a straightforward explanation of what works on which Note 2 on which network as far as 3G/4G service goes. (There was only one that came close, and it still didn't seem to actually be complete.) While the consensus seems to be that the T-Mo phone is the most flexible, what I've been able to cobble together is that the answer is much closer to "depends on what you want to use it for." (Duh, right?) So here's what I understand so far -- please feel free to correct me if I have any of this wrong, and I'll update (or if you think carriers/devices should be added to the list, comment with sources and I'll add on the info):
----
T-Mo T889 (stock unlocked): up to 42 MBps DC-HSPA+ on T-Mobile network (1900MHz); up to HSPA on AT&T network (trying to verify)
AT&T i317 (stock, unlocked): LTE on 700MHz on AT&T network (and future AWS when AT&T gets around to deploying); EDGE on T-Mobile network
T889 with T-Mo LTE unlock (est. Spring 2013): may possibly also enable LTE on AT&T network.
T889 with flashed AT&T radio (or NV partition edit): unknown -- no success to date. Hypothesized that it may enable LTE on AT&T network.
i317 with flashed T889 radio (or NV partition edit): loses AT&T LTE capability; gains HSPA+ (non-DC) on T-Mobile network (DC yet to be verified?)
No idea as to what would happen if/when an i317 can be flashed with a post-Spring 2013 T-Mo radio.
----
So the conclusions I seem to draw from this are:
If you want guaranteed highest speeds out of either service today, and some possibility of T-Mo LTE support in the future, get the AT&T phone and get used to playing around with radio swaps.
If you want the guaranteed highest speed out of T-Mo in a few months (and now, obviously), and some possibility of getting the highest speed out of AT&T (aka LTE) whenever xda-developers' ingenuity figures it out, get the T-Mo phone.
How does this sound to you guys?
Bewn looking into the same thing looks as the t889 should somehow be able to get lte on att but still cant find how

Short answer, AT&T Note 2 can get full speed HSPA+ on T-Mobile and LTE on AT&T... I currently have it that way... You need to activate AWS bands on NV partition... I also have the T889 and the T889 can do the same... Remember what I have been telling since day 1... They are both the same phone... Just with different signals pre activated by their respective carriers...

As I understand it the note 2 is the first phone to have all the different model have the same physical design and the software is very close to the same as well. I beleive that there are two internatinal ones the gsm and lte. All the us versions are based off the lte one so they are all very similar. I think we even have a few roms in the dev section now that are based off sprints rom. I could be wrong though. I was a little confused at first because usually on tmo our phone would be based off the gsm interntinal but not this time.
I gotta say I am really happy with samsung. And I am impressed with what they have accomplished with this phone and the sgs3. They told the carriers to go to hell and did it their way this time. I think they were able to do it because android is like 60% of the worlds cell phone market and samsung is like 75% of android sales. I am sure the numbers are off but I remember reading about that last year. Sorry to go off topic a little bit.

Uh, that's his point. And mine, for that matter. AT&T only so far - meaning my OP is currently correct. Nobody has done it on T-Mo (at least that has reported it here). "Hardware is the same," yeah, we all know that, but we also know the software isn't, so it's a matter of what we've actually tried and succeeded with and have confirmation of.
When somebody actually reports a success with T-Mo they can confirm, I'll update.

Sorry, poor assumption on your part. I found that. Did you read past the first post? First post says DC works (which was an edit, apparently yesterday) but post 3 says it only indicates DC, no actual speed bump to DC or 42 speeds. Lots of failures on that thread too. So I listed what worked for the OP. If you'd like to confirm dual-5MHz operation (which you didn't explicitly when you posted your success in that post), maybe some screenshots of the speed change if you have them, that should be fine and I'll edit.

I can add the NV method to the radio method, I suppose, since both seem to work on AT&T.

If you'd actually searched and read the numerous threads across both the i317 and T889 forums, including both the General and Q&A sections, like I have, you'd see multiple claims of it works, or it doesn't work, and varying methods described with people saying they work and don't work. TEKHD has bounced back and forth multiple times on this, along with a few others.
I was just asking for clarification that this was done on a T889 or not, since TEKHD said in the post I was replying to that it does, but in the thread he linked he said it didn't.
This is a T889 forum, isn't it? What do the users of the T889 care about an i317 hack unless the same hack will work for us?
LTE on T889 Phone
Searched and found conflicting repoerts. Is it possible to get the LTE working on AT&T using the Tmobile T889 model of the note 2?
It is thought so, but no one's done it yet.

Ah ok... so i just got ATT today and am using it on my tmobile note 2. DO I need to do anything at all to be getting the best speeds or is it getting the fastest it can right now until someone gets LTE working>?
I hope you guys can help me, I'm frustrated already, I bought an AT&T SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 and also purchased an unlock code, phone was working just fine with 4g on AT&T ( Tested ) but after unlocking I just don't get service when I use a T Mobile or Simple Mobile SIM.
On the About Phone -> Status I do get "Network: T-Mobile/Simple Mobile" ( Depending on the SIM I use ), but I don't even get EDGE, I cant make calls, I get the annoying emergency calls only, its making me crazy. Is there a way to fix this issue?
( I already added the APN settings, but im sure I don't need that to make calls, or get EDGE, I don't know what else to do to fix this ).
Thanks
maybe try factory reset? Possibly flash a different modem as well.

Factory reset would do nothing, the phone connects to AT&T with no problems, 4G and everything, but not even EDGE on T Mobile.
You already have a thread asking that question. .alot of people get mad when you clutter the forums.

HELP so confused =[
I have a TMobile Note 2 N-7100, its now unlocked to use with my AT&T sim. it shows that i have 4G speeds, i am searching the threads and getting mixed messages about enabling LTE. i came across this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2068041 but it was non-specific about working on At&t, even though if it works which i have not yet confirmed is there another way to enable it without running the risk of "bricking" my phone?

Im confused... do you have a T-mobile Note 2? or a N7100? I beleieve the N7100 is the AWS International one, the Tmobile Note 2 is T889... or you could have an N7100 ROM flashed on a T889 (which existed in order to get 4.1.2 before the Tmo release).

AT&T Samsung SGH-i317 Galaxy Note II LTE on Simple Mobile

Morning guys...
This is my very first thread on this forum so please bear with me if something was not done the right way.
Since I couldn't find an specific thread for this specific topic that's why I decided to post a new thread on this.
This thread will help you get a Stock AT&T Samsung SGH-i317 Galaxy Note II LTE phone with a stock ROM into Simple Mobile network with working 4G.
I can't guarantee this method would work on other Galaxy Note II models so please make sure your phone is exactly the same as the specs described on this link.
Also please be aware I cannot and will not be responsible for any damage this thread could cause to your phone. All I can say is, I tried this myself on my own phone and it worked for me and my only intention here is to share my experience to other users on my same situation.
So let's get into business!
Verify the phone specs. Please make sure your phone is an AT&T Samsung SGH-i317 Galaxy Note II LTE phone and that it matches the specs described here.
Get your phone unlocked. On a personal note this appears to be a must, so if you can't get it unlocked for some reason don't even bother moving forward down the list. I followed this thread to unlock my phone. Yes, the thread is for a Galaxy Note I, but it still worked for me.
Get it rooted. That can be done here.
Flash a stock T-Mobile ROM. That also can be done here which is the same thread as of step 3.
Enable AWS band. Is worth mentioning if you made it here successfully, then you already can use Simple Mobile just fine!, however you'll be stuck on 2G/EDGE unless you Enable AWS band here. This will let you enable 3G and 4G on your phone!.
Now at this point I'm sure you may be able to use another ROM of your desire, but I'm not 100% sure if that would work. On my personal recommendation I would first try the 5 steps EXACTLY as described above. Then if you still want to use another ROM, then you may need to repeat steps 4 and 5 with another ROM.
Now I also want to say, the credit is not all mine here. All I did was to compile the information altogether for you guys. Please don't forget to thank me, as well as the original thread owners compiled in this list.
Good luck in the Kitchen!
Reserved!
^^^Thanks, thread moved to general and stuck for easy reference.

Wait, You Menchtened LTE and 4G, And in which T-Mobile doesnt have. T-Mobile has 3G/3.5G HSPA+ but not 4G..
U dont need aws band on at&t phonez lmao noobs all u need is your phone unlocked and youll get on t-mobiles fake 4g .its cause t-mobile now shares at&t spectrum stop giveing people false info.

That is not entirely true sir. Not ALL areas have the 1900mhz Tmobile yet. You do need to unlock the AWS band for some areas to get the 4g. In my area (South Florida) they happen to have the 1900mhz 4g. I know because I sold an unlocked Infuse 4g (AT&T phone) to a buddy with a tmobile sim card and he got 4g on his phone.

Good information man. Ignore the OTHER GUY that is giving false information.
Everything worked for me, except one thing: CDMA VS GSM preference.
My CDMA signal is weak, so 4g cuts out. The phone just wants to default to EDGE as a first priority. How can I make CDMA the default preference so I always get 4g when available?
thanks!

I have a sgh-i317 with at&t radio uamc3 or something like that and jedi master 14 with aws mod. I also restored my friends nv item backup from his sgh-t889 with jedi master 14. I am getting the 4g bands but my phone will not connect to the lte bands of t mobile. is anyone else having this problem? I have tried everything to get lte includes odin to stock wich should allow me to connect to tmobiles lte but wont. other people are connecting with no problem. can anyonw help me think of more ways to fix this. or is this particular phone not support 1700mhzaws. I really dont get it as the specs everyware state it does. also when I select all lte bands and selct t mobile it say unable to connect, try again later. I put my sim in a s4 t mobile and lte works so it cant be the sim. I also put at&t sim in my phone and lte works so my lte chip/radio is working fine. is maybe the free unlock methode not unlocking my phone completely? any way to relock and do it with an an unlock code. franky I am puzzled. I am in an area getting t mobile lte, confirmed on both my friends with a note 2 and s4 from t mobile.

[Q] R800at on T-Mobile USA - 3G/HSPA+ Question

So I have an AT&T XP on T-Mobile USA. In my are the network has already converted so that anyone on a AT&T unlocked phone with T-Mobile can get 3G/HSPA+. If I go to:
Setting/Wireless Networks/Mobile Networks
It see T-Mobile 3G and I can select it and get HSPA+. Problem is though after anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours it will swith to Edge (2G) My question is, does anyone know how to get it to stay locked on HSPA+? I have all the APN settings in place, I have gone in and switched from GSM to WCDMA only, which after a few minutes it completely loses the network connection until I put it back on WCDMA(preferred)/GSM.
So.. I am wondering if there are other ideas that I a unfamiliar with...... thoughts anyone?
Oh, also when I do have HSPA+ I am consistently getting 4-7mbps download and 1-3mbps upload.
Edit: Would flashing the libs from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469473
Possibly make a difference? I know that the service signal is subjective to your location, and where I live there is strong coverage all over where I live and work. I simply want to do everything I can do make the most out of my phones signal.
Anyone........?

Came across a video where a guy flashed T-Mobile modem to his AT&T Galaxy Note and he was able to get 3G/4G on Tmo with his unlocked ATT Note.
Wonder if its possible to maybe not use these files as these are for Samsung, but is there something similar to this for Xperia or perhaps a set of Tmo modem drivers for our phone? I seriously have 3G/4G lit up light a freakin Christmas tree.... and it constantly drops to E. But if I select Search Network it find the T-Mobile 3G every time and will connect if i tell it to, then after a minute or so it drops to E. And if I specify in the settings to do WCDMA only it will auto connect then after a minute or so I lose all phone signal completely... driving me nuts

I had the same problem, after talking with Alejan, he felt that it was the TA file. After flashing a few different ones, and going through some trial periods over a few days here and there, we eventually stuck with a TA file from an R800AT on T-Mobile who was getting very good HSPA+ all the time. It did not help me get better service based upon a given area, but it did entirely stop the disconnect from happening anymore. Even though my area had great coverage ( according to the T-Mobile map and T-Mobile themselves , as well as the Tmo Sightings website ) I still ended up rarely getting HSPA+ so I made the compete switch to AT&T and have been HSPA+ 100% of the time now, averaging about 4-6mbs, its not LTE but no other is phone is the Xperia Play

No worries my friend, I will contact Alejan. I do remember long time ago I had a software that let you back/flash/restore a TA file I just cant remember the name of it, and no it was not S1Tool... and SEtool doesnt work without a SEtool card inserted into your PC.
Anyways I will contact Alejan. Thank you 216Monster.
