What filesystem should I format my 32GB microsd card to?

So I got a great deal on a class 10 32GB Samsung card, it came pre-formatted to fat32, however I had the wild idea that android supported NTFS based on something I read in the past so I formatted it to NTFS on a windows system and copied some files over (some being over 5GB each)...plugged in my card and turned on my phone and I get a message saying my card is blank or the wrong file format...guess it doesn't support NTFS
I know if I use the phones built in format utility it will format to fat32 which I don't really want because of the filesize limitation, I'd like to be able to copy 8-10GB files every so often so I can use my phone as a little shuttle drive in between places...
But I also want the ability for windows to be able to read my sd card if I change my phone into USB mode so I think that excludes the ext3, ext4 format which I think android will read...
Any ideas?

There's an app in the market that will mount any file formatted sdcard in the device I but I haven't used it out remember the name but you can check it and yes this belongs in Q&A but The way you format is fat 32

So I found an ntfs app in the market that'll mount ntfs at startup but I gotta root for it work. Guess I now have a reason to root

if you use windows, fat32 is the way to go so then you can connect the phone to computer and still can access the files

The reason the op doesn't want fat32 is because he has single files that exceeds 4 GB that he wants to transfer, so fat32 would not work for him.

format it ext3/4 and then install an ftp server app on your phone.

I have exactly the same problem. I want to have the sdcard in NTFS so then I do not have the 4GB limitation of FAT32. The is possible to have .mkv files on your phone or tablet.
In the case of my table the N8010, I have formatted the sd card on Windows with NTFS. Then installed the "paragon" app from market which works very good. It recognized the sd card in NTFS and mount perfectly. But it seems that when your card is overloaded with thounsands of files and some big 6GB file, then comes the problem. Android JB everytime that comes out of sleep, it will check for errors the sd card. Everytime! Then, I get the message "sd card checking for errors" and never gets back. The sd card is not recognized anymore until I reboot the device.
I think that the paragon app is not perfect and might have bugs, but
Is there any way to disable the "sd card check for error" functionality? Have read some threads about it, to delete some file from system, but that method produces inconsistencies with other apps.
By the way, I have tried to format on ExFat, and had the same problem. When the card is almost full it will never end up checking for errors. I finally broke the sd card when I formated it with ExFat and 64k allocation size. It was not regoznized neither by windows and android afterwards

I don't think you broke it unless you fried the flash chips. You can try using the disk manager in windows and try to see if it sees it. Or just learn how to use Linux command line tools and fix it that way. I recovered 80% of my pictures off of a dead SD card using dd and a file recovery utility. I don't recall which one. That 16GB SD card now works just fine as a 12GB card. I don't trust it for any more than shuttling between systems though.
Also, I've never had good luck with exFAT. I much prefer the EXT filesystems, but they aren't natively supported in windows or most cameras. Maybe try NTFS without journaling (If that's even possible)

exfat is proprietary windows and needs licenses. android won't support it.
ntfs is a journaling file system and will impact performance if you can get android to read it.
ext2/3 is the best solution. there are utilities you can install so windows can read it.

Ext2Fsd is excellent for Windows 7, I don't know what I'd do without it.

Remove the card and plug it into the converter and plug that into your computer or card
reader then re-format using FAT32 ONLY then put it back in your phone and then your 64gb
sdcard shall work!

Use the Windows drive manager to delete the partition on the MicroSD, do not reformat it with windows, plug it into the phone, and attempt to mount, it should do so but with 0 space now. Format it with the phone. Or look for the tool "fat32format" on the internet (Google is your friend) in order to force a format in FAT32.

Then try exFAT but if you have a windows computer, the default is FAT32.
If that don't work you will need to find a friend or relative who has
a windows computer which you can use to format the card using FAT32.

nope, you cannot install apps on external sd on the s4 yet.
even the apps2sd is not compatible with the S4.

Anything but the applications installed themselves. You can store whatever you want on your SD, no limits, just no APPS2SD yet.

You can have all your mp3's, videos, movies, pictures and documents plus backups of the rom and new roms or other
stuff but you just cannot use it to install apps until one of the devs finds a way to create a compatible app which will allow
for app installation on external sd.
Something similar to the apps2sd app which is not compatible with the S4.
Perhaps the developer of that app will upgrade it making it compatible with our phones.

This isn't actually true after a certain version of windows i think since vista(May be wrong) exFat is the only option you get.

Ever since windows xp fat32 was always the default when formatting usb flash drives(memory sticks) and sdcards.
Right now I am running windows 8 but I ran all the other prior versions of windows including windows xp.
When formatting hard drives, even external usb hard drives then windows (all versions) default to NTFS.
I never seen any versions of windows operating systems defaulting to exFAT.

Your right actually I got confused its actually partition space anything over 32Gb is out of a normal fat range for windows.

1) Make a LiveUSB stick of Ubuntu.
2) Boot into the USB stick.
3) Use GParted to format to Fat32.

Or you could search for 1 of the thousand formatting utilities that will do it and not have to download a 2gb file.

Do you know if due to the size of the memory card the phone takes a lot more time to load stuff??? I do not want to buy a 64gb if it will slow my phone a lot. If that's the case i may have to buy a 32gb card. Please tell me your input on this.

Well not in that sense but let's say if you would like to play a video or a song you have saved in your 64GB card. Does it still play it right away or have you experienced any slow downs? Someone who i know that works closely with phones informed me that it slows down the phone when loading files such as mp3 files or video files. Thanks dude.

So lately my sd card keeos getting removed unexpectedly?... its not getting removed or anything. Will wiping it aka formatting it make it okay again?

Btw, I have been using a 64GB SanDisk Ultra Class 10 for over 6 months with no issues. All my music, videos, ROMs backups etc are stored on the card. It gets heavy usage.. the biggest common denominator of the thread appears too be that the size of the card is the main issue and not the brand. 32GB cards are having the most problems.

Hard to say when you didn’t tell us what kind of SD card it is, what size, and how long you have had it. You need to give more information.
If it is a 64 GB card, it is because android natively does not support exFAT file systems for storage. Your issue is that the format is not compatible. In this case, flash perseus kernel found in the original android development section. Problem solved.
If it is an SD card of 32 GB or less, the issue is likely that you need to just format it. In this case just find an adapter to plug it into your PC, when the little window pops up asking you what you want to do “open folder to view files etc etc” all that… just close that window. Open some other folder (doesn’t matter which one) and on the left side you will see the drive shown. It will probably show up as F: or something… maybe G: … maybe Z:… who knows… but it will NOT be C:… C is your computer drive, don’t touch that.
Find the storage device on the left side, RIGHT click on it, and select “format”….
UNCHECK the “quick format option”…
For the file system select “FAT32” and for the cluster size select 32kb… (default is 16, but 32 is better and will provide better performance.)
Start the formatting. It will take a while… so go grab some lunch. If that doesn’t solve the issue then I don’t know what to tell you without more information but my guess after that would be that you have had the card for a while and it simply needs to be replaced.
What size card is it, what class, and who makes it?

That's weird my 64GB SanDisk Class10 card, that I have been using for months on my Note 2, is exfat and I haven't had a single issue with it.
My card was exfat right out of the box and that is how I used it. Right out of the box. I have NEVER formatted it.

I'm on Tweaked now. Before that Stock Android.

I'm using the Stock Kernel.. if I don't my extsdcard doesn't get recognized. I'd have to format it to fat32.. Here is a pic from Terminal to show I'm exfat. Look at the last paragraph.

I have scandisk class 10 SD card 64 GB.
its formatted using the note 8 device (exFAT).
Whenever I try to download a file or copy a file in note 8 to the SD. It fails and reboots my device. knowing that reading from the SD is perfect. I can play music and movies from SD with no issues.
the only way I can transfer files to the SD if I connect the SD to the PC directly.
I am not sure if this is an issue with Note 8 or SD. please help!

Mine does the same thing. Ive tried formatting in exfat and fat32, didnt help. It writes fine to an old 16gb class 4 card ive got but not the 64gb. Sucks but at least it reads fine

I have SanDisk 64GB (xd1 afair) exfat formatted in N5100, and it works ok with stock ROMs MD1'S and MF2.

I am not using any custom Roms. And i formatted my sandisk ultra 64gb more than three times but the same issue keeps happening. I also tried to find other apps to transfer movies and music files from Iinternal memory to sd but that didn't help. I can't even download directly to my sd. It reboots my note 8 if I try to download or transfer files to my sd.
Any suggestions?

I'm afraid nothing beyond painfully obvious ones - trying with another similar card, trying the card on any other device supporting exfat (if ok, this would provide definitive proof that card is ok), trying on freshly installed latest ROM, trying with the same card formatted in fat32.

device does not need to be hardware, it could be on the soft side as well, in such case reflashing/changing ROM could help

It seems like this is the last resort. I will reformat my note 8 and try again. I also forgot to mention, that few weeks ago I was able to transfer one 800 mb file but this stopped happening. So it seems like there is not enough memory to transfer although I tried clearing the memory.
I will let you know if this reformatting the note 8 will fix the problem.

Reformatting the device didnt fix my issue. I am not sure now if it is the device or the SD. I need to test my sd in other devices and check if it will allow transferring of files

I am having the same issue as well. I try to move files from my internal too my external card and device reboots. I have the SanDisk 64GB card as well, it works fine in my S4. Could it be a software issue on the Samsung side?

Hi I recently purchased a Note 2 from a guy on craigslist. I checked out the phone at purchase and everything proved to be correct. I didn't expect however that he had the phone rooted. I'm a big fan of rooting phones that don't have a good operating systems already or didn't have Android JB but phones like the galaxy phones I believe don't necessarily need to be rooted. I was pissed because I wanted it with stock rom but I just decided to accept it and unroot it myself. So after a long process I got it unrooted and running the latest stock rom and everything seemed to work except for one thing. When I transfered all of the Music files from my previous phones microSD(16gb) to my new one(64gb) none of the music files worked. All of them wouldn't play and the phone would say it can't open the file or something like that. So I tried formating the microSD and trying to put the files on the microSD again and still the files wouldn't play. I had to format the card through the phone itself and transfer the files through Samsung Kies just for 3/4 of the music to work. I can deal with 3/4 but now when I transfer a video file weather through Kies or straight to the folder none of the files play. When trying to play them nothing shows or sounds it's just black screen, you can fast foward or skip but nothing shows. I never thought I would have this much trouble with this phone but it appears as though there's a virus on the phone or card or something that is preventing video and music files to play. Even when trying to play files from the phone on Windows Media Player or any other music/video player the files don't play. I have also found that whenever I connect the phone to my PC let's say a day after I last connected it, I have to run USB connections on Kies and it has to reinstall the drivers for the phone just to actually see the files on the phone. Please help me I have no idea what to do. Thanks in advance.

You need to flashed a kernel that support exFAT format for 64gb or you can format your 64gb to FAT32 format, but for me i prefer to Saber Kernel and i don't need to format my micro sd card, you could try there are other kernels available for stock rom you can find them here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987541

So you're saying it's the microSD's format? It has nothing to do with the fact that the phone was rooted and that it might have a bug? Would kind of make sense because when I put the 16gb sd card in the phone all of the music files work. So it's the format, but I need a kernel? I have also found that whenever I connect the phone to my PC let's say a day after I last connected it, I have to run USB connections on Kies and it has to reinstall the drivers for the phone just to actually see the files on the phone. Since you're unrooted, you can't flash a new kernel so you may want to dismiss that last thing.
Have you tried only one 64gb microSD? It seems that your card may be bad or it's not formatted correctly for the stock firmware... I would test out another 64gb card and see if that works since the 16 works just fine.
Edit: Sorry... a little vague... the card needs to be formatted as Exfat if you can do that through Windows, that should work in case the card is actually in good condition.

I don't have any other 64gb microSD cards, the one I have came with the phone. The logo and everything on the card have faded out so I don't know what brand but I think it's sandisk. I don't know at this point I'm thinking it has to be the card because I've tried nearly everything and it's still not working the way I want it to. I formatted it using Windows UGI to FAT32 since thats what you said and that was the same format as the 16gb and sure enough most of the music works with some not working. So I tried putting movies on the card and once I didn't see a preview on the bottom left I knew it wasn't going to work. Seems like the card is bipolar I have a 32gb micro I'll try that, it's brand new still haven't used it, should I just put it in and see if it works or should I format it to FAT32? By the way Thanks again really appreciate your help!

I don't have any other 64gb microSD cards, the one I have came with the phone. The logo and everything on the card have faded out so I don't know what brand but I think it's sandisk. I don't know at this point I'm thinking it has to be the card because I've tried nearly everything and it's still not working the way I want it to. I formatted it using Windows UGI to FAT32 since thats what you said and that was the same format as the 16gb and sure enough most of the music works with some not working. So I tried putting movies on the card and once I didn't see a preview on the bottom left I knew it wasn't going to work. Seems like the card is bipolar I have a 32gb micro I'll try that, it's brand new still haven't used it, should I just put it in and see if it works or should I format it to FAT32? Try formatting to Exfat... it doesn't hurt to try at this point.

Have you tried only one 64gb microSD? It seems that your card may be bad or it's not formatted correctly for the stock firmware... I would test out another 64gb card and see if that works since the 16 works just fine.
Edit: Sorry... a little vague... the card needs to be formatted as Exfat if you can do that through Windows, that should work in case the card is actually in good condition.

I think he mention phone is rooted sorry if misread that part thats the reason i recommend to flashed kernel that support exFAT, actually as far as i know 64gb microsd card default format is already exFAT and 32 or 16gb is FAT32 and some are in exFAT. If doesnt want to flashed kernel then i recommend format sdcard from computer just plug in from card then right mouse that drive then format and select FAT32 format. If some instance your computer can't read your microsd card and cant format there is chance thar your microsd card maybe bad.

If you can see the files in the player, and you can see the sd card directory using a file explorer, its not the card. I had to add two lines to my system settings file. I'm sorry I don't remember the file name or the content of the two lines. Maybe my comment will jog someone's memory.

The phone is not rooted, it's running stock rom. I've already formatted the card a million times to exFat and still didn't work.

I can see the files but they do not work, At this point everything is leading to the problem being the card. I mean my other SD cards work with the phone and have no problem playing music or video files. I've tried nearly everything and the card still continues to malfunction.

I've formatted it to exFat a million times. That what I originally was formatting it to because windows quick format doesn't have a FAT32 option only exFat which was default and NTFS. exFat is not the problem.

It's looking more and more like SD damage...
Considering the fact that other cards work fine...
Copy your media to PC from the SD...and get a new card ?
I know it sucks...
And once the new card is installed...be "very" careful moving those files back as they may be messed up...
I'd pull a few songs from the PC after you copy them over and test them on another card to be sure before loading it to a new and expensive SD...
It sounds like the phone is fine...g

Try to format to NTFS first then format to FAT32 if doesn't work then maybe a bad microsd card

Well the card came free with the phone so I'm not too pissed. I'll just sell it and make it someone else's problem.lol

I'm not being a scumbag. The card works it's just has some problems but it works. I mean I don't know how the card would react on another phone or maybe someone would use it as their card for their camera I don't know. You're acting like it doesn't work at all and I'm going to try to screw somebody into buying a defective card.
