Root now or wait for JB? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

OK, so I got my GSIII a week ago. Having come from the Vibrant,. I am well versed in rooting and flashing custom ROMs. My question is whether I should go ahead and root the phone now or just wait a few more weeks for official JB to hit T-Mobile. Thoughts?

It takes two minutes if you're slow. In fact, you could have rooted faster than you typed your post

I pondered the same thing. Decided to wait. Althougb thqt could change any time.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

Root now and flash the many awesome custom roms available.

Just root now. If anything the official jb will probably still have bugs.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app

Lol who knows how long it takes until they send ota update

This is something i always wonder why people debate on which to do. Why would you wait? Im sure most here are here to take advantage of being able to root and use SU permissions??? So if you root/flash now you will have a rooted OTA JB rom in no time from release. Why wait? My thoughts at least lol.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

Just root and flash a recovery, then make an immediate full backup of your stock rom. I personally hate TW so there was no going back since day one haha

Root now. Who knows if jb will allow you to root.

Reboot once a day?

I dunno what's wrong with my phone, im getting reboots at least once a day. Sometimes when using YouTube and other times when streaming. I have it rooted stock. Should i send it back for a replacement or wait for JB update hoping it will go away?

You will wait, and wait, and wait. It will reboot again. If you rooted the phone, there's no more guarantee card. You can flash another firmware, with odin

Send it back, I did the same thing and got a new one. Why would you want to wait when we dont even know when JB is coming out.

Li5 as in the JB leak? if so, yes...go back to h2.
LI5 isn't stock it's a leak, so you're not stock like you said. Why would you install that leak??
The leak will definitely made your phone reboot or spare battery too(if not made by samsung) I don't have any reboots I'm completely stock that only time I did was in the leak with spare battery

Anyone else skipping roms?

I decided no roms this time around. I want everything to work. I will likely root to get rid of some bloat. Anyone else?

I will say that this is one of the ONLY phones that I ever thought about NOT romming but I doubt I will be able to hold back if something really good comes out...Hello, I am Justin, I am a flashaholic!
GOTTA have root access though... Can't have any company telling me what I HAVE to keep on my phone! :good:
My exact same thoughts. I only rooted to get rid of the bloat. Quick question though. ... im a little nervous... would I still be able to update if tmobile decides to push one even though im rooted?

I hope not to also but when a new version of android comes out and no update from the carrier then flashing seems like the only option..

Should get rid of CarrierIQ at least =/

Deff agree on that one. But alas, i will miss alot of the OG functions from touchwiz on this phone. Although with GN1, they found work arounds for it. Especially S Note.
My plan is to root as late as I can to avoid messing things up. I figure we won't see an update for a few weeks and by then all the bugs that come along with rooting a phone should be worked out. I really enjoy this phone and can, surprisingly, wait on rooting.

I know when I rooted that if I go to check for a software update it says it won't do it on a modified device so I am pretty sure we won't get OTA's through the rooted devices but you can just wait for someone to post the updated OTA and flash that and your good to go!
Or do you still have stock recovery?
Only rooted for bloat and spyware removal and a nice kernel. But im only flashing stock TW based roms!

Rogers in Canadiana with nothing yet. I did hear rumours of an update for the S3 and quite possibly the Note 2's starting tomorrow though. But I've given up on rumours.
AT&T here in the US and completely stock Note 2 and no update via Kies or AT&T that I can see.
U got that because u on a custom Rom. Every one I tried I have that notification.
Nada. Simmer down.

No update on the Rogers note 2.
I'm rooted and I checked for the OTA update and their was no update, said I had the latest version. I want to go back to stock rom now because every time I read about installing a custom rom it breaks something else on your phone and you have to wait for a fix for that.
Rooting your phone with custom roms takes too much time and energy. I don't have time to research different roms and play with my phone everyday. Ill just wait for ATT to come out with their updates, So if someone can link me to have to get back to ATT's I317 stock rom that will be great, thanks.
This OP's started a raucous, and does anybody notice that they've miraculously gone AWOL since the 1st post...??? Oh, and 0 (zero) individuals have successfully retrieved this "phantom" update?! Seems like a weak (yet successful) attempt at stirring the pot,
if you ask me...
Just my $.02...
I didn't install it because I was on a custom ROM.
AT&T and using jedi 3.1
If you're on a custom ROM, especially if it's a port, then you shouldn't even bother starting a thread like this.
I am on a custom Rom and also got the update notification, but it is just to 'OK' the software updating service.

Its not hard to root or unroot, although its normal to hesitate on potentially bricking anything as expensive as the GNII.
Just remember, you only have to unroot if you have to take the phone back. 70 bucks on an otterbox has me covered for the occasional slip. As far as flashing concerns, theres generally a way to unbrick everything but lets say the modem (which apparently already has a fix) or system is corrupt, the stock roms and triangle away app are available for flashing and reseting counters respectively.

I've never went through for warranty for a phone I bought outright but for the last company (virgin mobile) when I went for the warranty, I just unrooted the phone and locked the bootloader and it was fine. I don't think they would go all out to check if you rooted the phone. I forgot if they could check or not, but most of the time (IMHO) they wont. Unless they really don't want you to fulfill the warranty.
Well im willing to root lol stock is slow and it lags -_- and I hear some echo. When im on the phone.
Is this rootable?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
That's rootable. I just re-rooted after the update to LL4 two days ago.
I bought my phone in November, which means it's still under warranty - I've rooted and unrooted and rerooted the phone about 3 times now just to make sure I've got the process down and nothing weird happens to it.
The way I rooted that worked for me was to root using CF auto root through ODIN. Then to unroot, I ran Triangle Away, then unrooted through SuperSU full unroot, and for good measure, I ODIN'd the T-mo stock firmware back on the phone. At the end of that process, I was factory reset back to a clean phone with 0 flash counter and status was normal.
So now I'm rocking an unlocked, rooted, stock rom phone, and I love it.

Option 2 doesn't load a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP). It just roots the phone, but you'll still have stock recovery. If you want a custom recovery, you'll need option 1.Or, flash the custom recovery separately after you do Option 2.
What about option num.3?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
Option 3 only works if you're not on baseband LL4. Once you've updated to LL4, the exynos exploit was closed, so if you're still stock uprooted by LL4, then you'll need to do option 2.
If you're still on valk8, then yeah, you can use option 3.

Thank you all very much, seems I haven't received anything at all cause mine is the second one. Im such a noob, don't matter how much I've roamed around here. Lol!!!
I have a q, again, will that update mess up with like cwm or root when/if I receive it? Will I have to root again?
Also the first one went from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 with that update, but mine had 4.0.4 out of the box. They were bought with a difference of there months at most. First one I got starting last December, the second one at the end of this February but still outdated according to those numbers. But when I check for updates it states there are none. Whatever, thanks again.
I didn't notice that I had posted on the general thread instead of q&a thread, please move if needed. Sorry about that too.

Yup it's the custom recovery that will prevent an update. When you load a custom recovery you are basically saying "I am the administrator of my phone, not T-Mobile". So it is up to you to apply updates. Also if you dont want to see the update notification anymore you can freeze the Device Management process with Titanium Backup or Rom Toolbox.
Well, not long after there was an update, Lol, though not directly from tmous, at least for me.
What a bump. Hahaha
