[Q] Voice calling for Google Talk - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running Cyanogenmod 7.2 Stable, no further mods, on my HTC Desire Z.
I came across this thread: http://www.androidng.com/install-google-talk-video-audio-any-android-gingerbread-phone but given that it seems to apply to older 2.3.3 ROMs and not the current 2.3.7 ROM (CM7.2) I am unsure about whether I should flash that app.
Anyone know if the app in that link will work on CM7.2? If not where can I find one that works?
I don't need the video calling to work (since the DZ doesn't even have a front camera), just the voice calling. Thanks in advance.

I tried using google voice through talkatone (amazing program uses google voice over the data channel not the voice channel) on mimicry v1.5.0 and it didn't work. Something about the kernel not supporting some sort of streaming thingie. Running blackice now and it runs amazingly well.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I am not trying to use Google Voice. I am talking about the Google Talk app that is mostly used to do instant messaging chat (similar to Whatsapp, BBM, iMessage). The Nexus devices on stock ROMs have the additional capability of voice and video calling built into the Google Talk app - bringing its capabilities to that of Skype. But non-Nexus devices don't have this, plus CyanogenMod 7.2's own Google Talk app lacks it. I don't need to use it to make calls to real phone numbers, I just want to, say, call my sister while she is logged into Gmail on her laptop. And yes, I know about Skype, but I don't like using it on a different device or computer other than my main PC due to its super annoying feature of constantly syncing my text chat history every time I log in.
To rephrase my question: Is the Google Talk apk linked in my OP suitable for flashing onto my DZ and then using for voice calls? If not, where can I get a suitable Google Talk apk?

Sorry misread the post (never read and drive) but if I am not mistaken it uses the same backend. Guess I will have to try it myself and see what happens.

I think you are looking for gapps-gb-20110828-newtalk-signed.zip
Just flash it over CM7.2 through recovery (don’t forget to make nandroid backup before flashing ).

[Q] Cyanogen and 2.3.4 GTalk Video Chat

My wife uses an unrooted G2. She likes using Google Talk video chat on her computer. She would love to be able to use it on her phone, even without a front facing camera. I've read elsewhere that Cyanogen has started incorporating 2.3.4 and Video Chat into the nightly builds for the G2. I'm hesitant to root and flash her phone with the current nightly build, since I don't to risk giving her an unstable phone that has broken other features she used to using.
What's the rule of thumb for jumping to a CM build in a case like this? Do you wait for a "stable" build to be posted? If so, about how long it take from the time they start incorporating the stuff you want into nightly builds before it becomes stable (a week, a month, etc)?
just do a nandroid of current rom then flash latest build anf give it a try, some builds are pretty stable aand have lot of fixes with current issues, if bad and have issue you can wipe and restore
Or use tango or fring... or search for the apk that has the updated video chat incorporated

I tried tango and fring, but neither of them work with the desktop browser version of google talk video chat. We've got the whole extended family on gtalk vc, so in order for video chat on the phone to be value added, it has to work with that. Thanks though.
Just root, download the google talk 1.3 flashable zip, flash with rom manager or in recovery, all done.
I haven't seen the zip in the g2/dz forums but I found it through google...

I don't think gtalk 1.3 will work on anything before 2.3.3. At least that's what I have been reading. I got it working perfectly on CM 7.0.2 by flashing the new gapps version.

How's the stability of 7.0.2? Any significant bugs? Also, I see that 7.0.3 is now in the list of stable builds -- were there be any reason for me not to flash that instead of 7.0.2?

I did push a new googleservicesframework.apk while trying an alternate method. That just gave me force closes when trying video of audio. I flashed the same gapps as you and it stopped force closing and I get two way audio and video.
I'm running CM 7.0.2 with pershoots kernel on a G2.
Jgariano,
7.0.2 is perfectly stable for me. No problems to speak of. I read the only change in 7.0.3 is a security fix, so no major changes.

Hmmmm, I wonder if I need to flash a googleservicesframework.apk as well... I don't have any options for video, and the audio link is greyed out, although it if pushed, it says 'calling' but doesn't really do anything. There is no video option at all, and when viewing my status from another g-mail account, it doesn't show the video camera icon.

I have the same 'problem' with google talk. Everything works fine except the video calling. I can't select it. (When i open talk and then click on my own name, there isn't a box i can check to accept video calling).
i have tried to flash it too,but gtalk disappeared in the applist
why?

[Q] gapps w/video chat?

I tried installing one but no video chat. TIA for the help.
Cyanogen forums had something posted. I tried it, seems to fail to transmit the video feed from me, but I receive and see my own feed. Do a google search, but I think it's still a work in progress.
I had it working back when I was running CM7.01 or something like that. Oh well. It works on my Nexus S 4G. Anybody know where I can find a gapps with the video chat for the Evo?
you guys should check out koushdecks thread, he has an updated gapps with the vid chat.
on the ROMs that I've tried where vid chat worked in google talk, switching to the main camera on the back crashes the chat. is there one that does not crash on switching to the main camera?
and for the OP, MikG 2.1+3.0 ROM has vid chat google talk baked in already, caveat is that it is with the above issue.
I actually figured out the gapps with video calling. By all means you can use any feeding you would like. Salvage-mod.com in the downloads has the gapps I worked on. Enjoy.

ICS on LG G2X.

I installed the Bloodeagle ICS (4.0.3) ROM on my G2X yesterday. It went straight on without any hitches using the clockworkmod recovery/ROM manager. It's not bad. The important stuff all works (phone, data, wifi, camera etc..)
The biggest difference is battery life. It easily added about 3 hours for me, although since I tend to run a lot of background apps, the difference may really be that some of these don't work on ICS and weren't installed.
Some on the cons are...
Android market app doesn't work (I suspect it knows I have ICS 4.x and doesn't like it?)
Even though I have my contacts sync'd, text messages only show up with the phone number (no name) even though the people are in my contact list.
Both of the games I had installed (purchased) are now complaining that I need to purchase them (in order to play the full version).
Some of the non-standard directories I have on my external SD card aren't recognized. (It can find my camera photo's folder, and my QuickOffice documents) but not my Music (mp3) and Pictures directories.
I would say about 60% of my existing apps work OK. I tried to download the Chrome beta browser from the market (had to do it via PC, as the market app isn't working), it says my device is incompatible. (ICS is required, hmmm)
The haptic feedback feels different, smoother, more polished. I really like it.

Hellfire 1.4
I put Hellfire 1.4 on my G2X yesterday and it added probally 6 hours to my average life. All seems to work except for video recorder and wifi calling still a litte iffy. Highly Recommend.
LG O2X
Hey guys I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, i'm very new at this. And i'm looking for some guidance. I am also new with android phones. Mine is an LG O2X p9990. I did installed CM7 android version 2.3.7 bb 1035.21_20110725. Everything is working fine, phone, email, browser, camera and apps. Sometimes it does the apps crashes here and there but not big deal. But the only concern I don't really like is the call quality, people i call says that my voice is not very clear and they can hear a lot of the background noise. Some suggest to change the RIL. So here is where i need the help, which RIL to get, where to get it and how to change it.
Any suggestions that can lead me to do this in a clear and simple way?
Many thanks!
When I had ril issues I purchased getril and V21e is the right one. Hope you find this use full.

Thanks again for your help. But actually i did change the rom to NOVA HD+ and now the call quality is way much better... but there's some apps that are not stable at all:clock (alarm to be exact) camera, email from the notification bar and a couple others. Some times phone calls drops down but i'm not sure if is my phone doing that. So far i do like a lot ICS looks and feels very smooth. But how about MIUI do you think is more stable?

Voice dialer in Jelly beans?

I tried Jelly beans on my Galaxy Nexus couple of days and paired it with my BlueAnt S4 (Bluetooth speaker phone). Whenevr I tried to make calls after pairing it with BlueAnt, it will not use Voice dialer but was using Google speak tool. Which is very poor in understanding your commands. Where as voice dialer in ICS was very superior.

You can use cyberon voice commander from play store but you must first disable google voice. It will give you very reliable voice dialing but completely shuts down all of the google voice commands as well as google now. For me, I chose cyberon but voice dialing is a very high priority. I'm pretty sure that someone will come out with a fix that will let 3rd-party voice dialers coexist on jelly bean.
Would cyberon shut down the GPS voice too or take it over?
Thank you

Jawbone Voice Dialer
I am currently using a Jawbone Era on my Galaxy Nexus running stock rom of Jelly Bean 4.1. I am trying to get the physical button on the Jawbone to activate Google Now/Voice Assistant instead of Voice Dialers. I tried installing the app in my talk that is suppose to work but no luck. Is there a setting in the os to switch the default action or an apk to download. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

I've tried the 2 or 3 apps that would work to make these changes under ICS. I don't think any of them work under JB. Hopefully the new underlying is just different but still accessible. I think we will know fairly soon now that JB is getting out.

Thanks for responding. I'm no developer but I would think that this sort of thing should be in a settings menu somewhere. I'm surprised that it is not. Changing defaults like which apps to launch upon an action should be user level functions. Just out of curiosity which apps were you using in ICS?
Does anyone know where the defaults are stored to be reset or changed in Android any version?

Media Button Router and bluetooth launch. Actually I may have used them prior to ICS because I didn't need them. Must have been Gingerbread.
I think your going to have to be a developer this time to alter the defaults and I have a bad feeling that it may not be doable this time in a stock rom.

Thanks anyways. I will keep on trying. I said I was no developer...but still no stranger to programming Just never needed to mess around with Android OS usually it does everything i need no trouble. Symbian however was a different story. Hopefully someone will see this post who is much better than me a tweaking OS's and put an option into one of their Roms. (Hopefully android 4.1.2)

Yes, I wanted voice dialer to work with bluetooth becuase Google search is a very poor tool. It does not understand even a single command where as voice dialer in ICS was great. I don't care about Google serach. Voice dialer merge with Google search is a step backward from Google.

Evo 4g w/CM 7 and FFC apps

Hi, new here, not new to flashing ROMs though. I've always been able to figure out my problems out on my own or through intensive searching. Today is not the case, hence joining the forum. One of the main reason's I activated this phone recently was to voice chat with Google Hangouts and I was already paying the extra $10 a month for sprint's data usage on my previous "dumb" phone. Everything worked fine on the stock rom, I just wanted more out of the phone.
I have a Sprint HTC Evo 4g. It has hboot 2.18 so I unlocked it through htcdev. Rooted it with s-on and installed Cyanogenmod. I want to retain all the phone's capabilities so I went with the stable 7.2 after learning the drivers for 4g and the FFC aren't supported after gingerbread. All the cameras work as they should in the stock loaded camera app. I update Google talk to hangouts and when I try to use video chat, I get "Camera error." I attempted to use Tango, and the front facing camera doesn't start up either. Audio works fine for both apps. My next steps included trying CM 7.2 nightly and CM7.1; I got the same error. Through further research I found a gapps package with Google Talk with video. Updated this to hangouts, got the same error. Uninstalled the updates and tried the video chat; it worked to my surprise however, I cannot video chat with anyone who has updated to hangouts only with the original Talk app.
I've searched and searched and found references to the problem with no solution. One source even mentioned the newer apps are not compatible with some older roms, but this didn't make sense to me since everything worked on the stock 2.3.5 rom. I found one instance of a solution but the source for the fix is no longer in the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22735475&postcount=989
Any advice? Any way to log when the front camera fails? I really want to stick with a stable rom, preferably CM.
Just tried the Thundershock rom and I get the same error... I'm wondering if I should just chalk it up to the apps not supporting older roms. OR, I'm flat out missing something....

Bump.
Still no luck with CM7. I tried Digital Karma V9 and the camera works in Hangouts, but Hangouts fails to load (force close error) after I do anything else on the phone after a fresh reboot.... CaptainThrowback's rooted stock rom works perfectly, but the rom is lacking in customization. I'm guessing I could mod it to my taste but I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to this whole ordeal. Only in a perfect world, I can have everything, huh?
For now, I have opted to go with CM 7.2 until I can play different ROMs some more. I may not have any time this weekend like the past weekend so I just need a basic functioning phone for the time being...

Running Classic rom with some success as long as I don't reboot the phone. Otherwise I get the same error as in DigitalKarma. Simple fix is to uninstall and reinstall the Hangouts update. Not a Sense fan though...
Still un-answered...
Well, I've went with Skype (modified by theoso) on CM7.2 since it seem to be the only ROM to really cater to me. ADW launcher, absolutely stripped down, etc. Skype works as a compromise to ROM choice and Hangouts. I'd say I'm happy to have something rather than nothing. Especially for a phone whose forum support is a thing of the past.
