Hi, new here, not new to flashing ROMs though. I've always been able to figure out my problems out on my own or through intensive searching. Today is not the case, hence joining the forum. One of the main reason's I activated this phone recently was to voice chat with Google Hangouts and I was already paying the extra $10 a month for sprint's data usage on my previous "dumb" phone. Everything worked fine on the stock rom, I just wanted more out of the phone.
I have a Sprint HTC Evo 4g. It has hboot 2.18 so I unlocked it through htcdev. Rooted it with s-on and installed Cyanogenmod. I want to retain all the phone's capabilities so I went with the stable 7.2 after learning the drivers for 4g and the FFC aren't supported after gingerbread. All the cameras work as they should in the stock loaded camera app. I update Google talk to hangouts and when I try to use video chat, I get "Camera error." I attempted to use Tango, and the front facing camera doesn't start up either. Audio works fine for both apps. My next steps included trying CM 7.2 nightly and CM7.1; I got the same error. Through further research I found a gapps package with Google Talk with video. Updated this to hangouts, got the same error. Uninstalled the updates and tried the video chat; it worked to my surprise however, I cannot video chat with anyone who has updated to hangouts only with the original Talk app.
I've searched and searched and found references to the problem with no solution. One source even mentioned the newer apps are not compatible with some older roms, but this didn't make sense to me since everything worked on the stock 2.3.5 rom. I found one instance of a solution but the source for the fix is no longer in the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22735475&postcount=989
Any advice? Any way to log when the front camera fails? I really want to stick with a stable rom, preferably CM.
Just tried the Thundershock rom and I get the same error... I'm wondering if I should just chalk it up to the apps not supporting older roms. OR, I'm flat out missing something....

Bump.
Still no luck with CM7. I tried Digital Karma V9 and the camera works in Hangouts, but Hangouts fails to load (force close error) after I do anything else on the phone after a fresh reboot.... CaptainThrowback's rooted stock rom works perfectly, but the rom is lacking in customization. I'm guessing I could mod it to my taste but I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to this whole ordeal. Only in a perfect world, I can have everything, huh?
For now, I have opted to go with CM 7.2 until I can play different ROMs some more. I may not have any time this weekend like the past weekend so I just need a basic functioning phone for the time being...

Running Classic rom with some success as long as I don't reboot the phone. Otherwise I get the same error as in DigitalKarma. Simple fix is to uninstall and reinstall the Hangouts update. Not a Sense fan though...
Still un-answered...
Well, I've went with Skype (modified by theoso) on CM7.2 since it seem to be the only ROM to really cater to me. ADW launcher, absolutely stripped down, etc. Skype works as a compromise to ROM choice and Hangouts. I'd say I'm happy to have something rather than nothing. Especially for a phone whose forum support is a thing of the past.

May be a stupid question, but is there anyway to extract the new version of sense from the HD Rom and add it to a EVO rom so we can have the new sense and all our other phone features working?

I think having just sense rosie, lock, music, etc is what he was talking about. A flashable zip to update your current Rom, not a camera broken port. I would love the same.
I believe is not possible since they haven't done it yet , but maybe we get an update with the new sense which imo it was supposed to be for froyo since all the features like backup all the apps is a froyo thing and we didn't get it in ours cause they wanted to show this.phone with 2.2 asap, and not another deal beaker like the hero

no thats not what he was asking if you take what he said at face value. he was asking something that he could have had an answer for just by searching or manually looking at pages past page 1

Im glad you know what people are meaning to ask
I would hope, that everything said is taken at face value and people don't try to look for some hidden message
I know about the roms floating around out there, have flashed a couple, but they all have something broken, hence "having all our phone features working." A flashable zip would be the ticket, that way we could update whichever rom we prefer using...
HTC weaves sense into android very deeply so it's easier said then done, but people are still working on it so it could happen. Even so if HTC sticks to their pattern and releases another towards the end of the month they may beat us to it. Either way it's not something you're likely to see in a flashable zip that can update ROMs, it's too drastic of a change.
Difficult :/
I have been working on such a thing for almost two weeks now. It started when I just wanted the new music ui. I tried porting that and then I found that after porting it wouldnt show up in the programs list so i needed to modify some files to get it in there. I got that far only to find that it would crash on opening. Further investigation showed that when you open the app it also loads the matching widget and DLNA stuff. I proceeded to port both of those also to find that the DLNA stuff requires a customized wifi stack. Still havnt fixed that but I also found that all of them rely on the HTC copyright apk which cannot coexist with the one already on the EVO that everything elce uses. Simply put, it would just be easier to port over everything than just parts. Sorry bud

Ditto, similar thing happened with me trying to port the "People Widget". Just to much stuff is tied together. In the meantime I am working on an app for Comcast Voice.
Ok, got psyched OnStar added 2010 models. However, could not even find the app on my phone - Redemptive Revolution 2.3/Lou's # 9 kernel. So I went to the market on the internet, and it says this application is not compatible with my phone (but has no problem with my Eris, which has been off the VZW network and unused for months).
So I ask around on another forum, and other Dinc folks can get the app, some rooted, some not.
Anyone else having this issue? I have checked the help forums over at the android market, and it seems many, many folks have similar problems, for example, they get a replacement phone, and it's not that they can't reload an app, it's that the market says the phone is not compatible, even though really is. No user or Google-type person has been able to address or even explain the issue.
This is the smartest bunch of android folks I know of, so if anyone has any thoughts, I'd really like this app for my phone, and I would be eternally grateful (for while anyway).
I've not had any issues with the Onstar app myself. I've used it on stock & stock+root, CM6 and CM7 RC1 and RC2 with my Droid inc. Only minor 'issue' was it forgot my login creds.
What ROM are you on. Works fine on my Z ROM on Incredible. Your ROM may be telling the market the wrong phone.
still on Redemptive revolution, which is an Inc-Evo hybrid. But it should not matter. It is still Froyo, and this issue seems to run deep in the market, just so happens I really want this app.

The Froyo part should not matter it is what phone the Market thinks it is talking to.
Try a different ROM like mine or one of the other Z ROM's and if it installs you can copy it from /data/app/ to your SD card and go back to your current ROM and install it. If you do a nand backup of your current you can install another and get back to yours easy
FWIW, I am running CM7 RC2, and the OnStar app works fine.
Is there any good data on which of the major ROMs are most trouble free?
I am a pretty simple guy. All I really want is to be able to use my phone as a hotspot, take pictures without the camera app crashing and easy access to turn the torch on and off. Seems like a lot of the reviews spend a lot of time focusing on how many colors you can change and relatively little on the actually reliability of the ROM. This sort of leaves us asking eachother and it seems like everyone and their brother has an opinion on how stable any given ROM is and all swear by different ones.
At any rate, this just leaves me wondering if there is actually any good reviews or sources that summarize what the weeknesses of each ROM are. I know it is a tricky thing to ask, because they are always changing with each nightly build, but I have been pulling my hair out for the last couple years trying to find a properly stable ROM for my T999.
They cant really review stability and functionality on some roms, such as CM for example. Its going to be different for every model device, and even between 2 identical model devices you will still find one has issues while another does not. Thats why they usually stick to reviewing features and options. But also, what works best will vary from person to person even more so than from one device to the next. As is stated in all the "what's the best rom" threads, only you can determine what suits your needs best.
But for what its worth, imo, if its stability you're after, stick to whatever the manufacturer included on any given device.

I would stick with the stock rom, but I just really don't like it. I have also gotten very used to using a more stock version of Android and don't want to have to adjust back to using the stock rom, even if there are ways to get tethering to work.

What don't you like about the stock ROM? You say you want simple and don't care about changing anything, but you're not happy with stock either. What do you really want? lol. Also note, than any other ROM is not going to have the Samsung camera app, they are all going to be a lot more basic camera's, no wifi calling if you use that t-mo feature.
Torch on and off can be accessed with a shortcut on stock ROM, any third party app that lets you add a widget, or if you install xposed framework, you can add torch to the volume up button, so you can turn the torch on without even waking the phone. I'm with Doc, I'm a Touchwiz kind of guy too. I don't get the hate for it.
I just don't like some of the extra junk Samsung adds on. I like a more stripped down vanilla Android. I originally switched yo get rid of sVoice in particular and just got used to it. Not needing extra apps for WiFi tethering is a nice bonus.
At any rate. Just totally wiped the phone back to stock with Odin and installed the latest AOKP. No problems yet.
You can strip the Samsung apps out, and there is mods to enable native tethering.. But aosp or the kind is a nice option as well, just depends on what you want and need

Thinly veiled best ROM thread. SlimKat with Banks' minimal gapps.
I don't use my S3 anymore, but I have that ROM on it and my other two devices. It is filed under d2lte on their site, it's a unified build.
If you have kernel problems, use ktoonsez'. That one was always really solid.

I never figured out what was causing problems with my last ROM. TBH, I don't even recall what the kernel and ROM combination was. It was just something some random XDA forum member suggested. The biggest issue is that every time I opened the camera app, went away from it and came back, it would crash. Also happened when switching between camera and video. Sometimes it would require a system reset to get the camera back. I think it was something to do with the app itself, cause other apps that took pictures never had any problems. Super annoying. There were some other issues to. I stuck it out for a long time because the app fixed a BT audio issue I was having and I was too lazy to do more searching or reflashing my phone from scratch.
Right now I am just trying to make my phone last until the Sony Z3 launches. I am pretty sure that will be my next phone. Hopefully it won't cost a crazy amount to import it if t-mobile doesn't get it right away.

AOSP camera was always crap in general but especially so on the S3.
You can get an updated on in the play store now, so you can freeze the AOSP one.

The camera in the latest AOKP was working fine, but I downloaded the Google Camera app just to check it out. Works fine taking normal pictures, but the blur mode causes it to crash when you try to take a picture and the panorama/photosphere modes won't take pictures. I found some other people with identical problems, but didn't see a clear solution.

It was originally for the Nexus 5, then they put it on the play store for everyone. Clearly issues with non Google devices.
I'd suggest a third party camera app, like Camera ZOOM or something.
First off, I have been searching for about 3 weeks trying to find a ROM that will retain s note. I have tried several other apps and have not found one that works as efficiently, and to my liking like s no doeROMsI have tried flashing several different ROMs and still have not found one that is no work on.
currently I am running a liquidsmooth version 3.2. Main reason why I crashed my phone is for battery life. After the NK2 update my battery life went to crap. I don't make too many posts on here at all, I spend most of my time reading and searching.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Steve.
P.S. I guess this needs moved. Thanks in advance for moving.

All Touchwiz ROMs (based on stock) are compatible with S Note (a Touchwiz app). Sounds like you have been running through AOSP based ROMs.
About all I can find has been aosp or CM. I tried the Roger Wilco ROM but could not get it to boot. I will keep searching.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using XDA Free mobile app
I am having a similar frustration. I'm looking for a ROM(s) with S Note for a Note 2, though I got the R Wilco ROM to work. I used this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...lco12s-stock-ne2-v1-0-8-24-14-t2857216/page73
However, it still updates with Samsung, all the Google apps are there, and Gallery wants to sync with Google. WiFI and GPS worked out of the box. It's been really stable. Even Firefox hasn't been crashing!
I don't get why people want to have a Note and don't want to use the pen. I haven't found any other apps that work with the pen. Though, to be honest, finding Android apps is ridiculously difficult: there's no reliable way on the Play market.
So, what I'm looking for is a 4.4.x KitKat ROM with S Note (and therefore presumably Touch Whiz) that's stable, WiFi works out of the box, GPS works out of the box, and has limited Google apps (ie just YouTube, Gmail, Maps/Nav, and Google Play). In a perfect world, those Google Apps would be an add-on set. I got that idea from another ROM actually. I don't want it to auto-update and attempt to kill itself.
Hi guys!
I have had a HTC M8 for over 2 years and have loved it very much. I didn't like sense very much so I put the google play edition ROM on there so that it was just running stock android and it became my dream phone. I decided to upgrade to the HTC 10, but sense is driving me insane again (although it is much better) i do just want to go back to stock android again. There's no GPE version of this phone, is there still a way that I can go to stock android on my HTC 10?
Thanks in advance

Great question, and I wish there was an option, in some settings somewhere to just reboot into stock Android, but sadly nothing like that.
Only option is to wait for CM13 ROM's to come out this Summer to get away from Sense
There will be non-sense ROM's out soon.
Btw, if you just replace the launcher to something like Nova or whatever you like, Sense is basically not even there anymore.

So Cyanogen Mod is effectively just stock android? Or will there be subtle differences between that and the Google Play Edition ROM that I'm used to?

Yes I did install the Google Now launcher, and it has definitely helped, but there are still some little things about Sense that are driving me crazy. Little things... I just have minor OCD... I hate HTC's lockscreen clock, I don't have my location services on all the time, so the lockscreen clock gives me a "weather unavaliable" error 24/7. I don't even want weather on my lockscreen. And also it drives me crazy that I can't install Google's phone app, that is way better than HTC's. And also I can't uninstall Instagram, and Facebook etc, apps that I don't even use!
I know these things probably seem silly to most people but they're really annoying to me, hence why I want to go back to lovely stock Android! Do you know if I could achieve what I want simply by rooting my phone? Or would flashing a new ROM be the only way?

Try Nova, honestly it makes GPL seem silly. As for the lockscreen widget, I'm trying to get rid of that myself so let me know if you figure it out :silly:
The unwanted apps like facebook/insta have been disabled on my phone so they don't run background services and I have used nova to hide the icons. They may as well not exist on the phone but unfortunately I can't remove them completely..at least not without root, which leads to my next point...
You can achieve most of the things you want (removing system apps etc.) with root. Short of wanting additional features (even this can be done via xposed to be honest) baked into the OS or wanting a pure stock experience, you can achieve what you need with root. However, I won't go into all the details with the issues with unlocking your BL and rooting and doing S-Off etc.

I feel the same way about the HTC sense interface.
What I did was install the Google Now launcher so that took care of part 1.
Then I side loaded the google dialer ver 2.5.11 rc8-20511
Then I side loaded the google contacts
Then I installed from the play store google Messager and Google calendar and Google Clock.
I then turn off blink feed and now the phone is 99% like stock android!
I also installed Chrooma keyboard or you can go with swift key!
Hope this helps you cause now I'm loving the phone!

It looks like a great option! I tried it yesterday, but I have one (yet) issue, phone is not ringing, when incoming call... I gave it all permisions I could, but no sound and no vibrations, just on display
I installed Google dialer 7.0.140861421-nonnexus from apkmirror.com.
I found this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/stock-google-dialer-ringing-loudspeaker-t3373657/page4
but there isn't any working solution as I know. Maybe something with root permisions is working?
I will try later and older versions of dialer, but I'm afraid there isn't any working, when noone here get it done...
I would suggest you to try resurrection remix ROM. I think it's the best AOSP ROM out there. Just like you, I have a minor OCD and hate the sense lockscreen, dialer and everything. Gets boring after some days.
I installed Lineage OS yesterday night, and now I'm testing it. So with open Gapps it bring me what I wanted! This ROM looks nice.
I don't think HTC sense is boring, it's just tragic...

How is lineage at the moment, many significant bugs? Since there's no stable version yet, you are using the nightly, right? Since they release one new version every week, how does the updating process work? It's like and OTA update?

It is very stable and one of the best performing ROMs right now, although I had stutter issues few months ago. It's pretty much gone in the newer versions. I'm using this as my DD and I haven't had a single bug till now. The updating process is just like stock. There's updates tab in about where you can see the available nightly. You can download it and will be flashed automatically in the recovery. Just make sure you have the latest version of twrp installed.
Badelhas:
As you say, it's nightly, I didn't really noticed it much, because there weren't any more stable, than this nightly But I read here on the main LineageOS topic, that there aren't any major bugs, so I tried it.
There are some (important) features (rather than bugs) not running - you cannot use home button to wake up phone like on stock ROM (without fingerprint). So you have to use phone as Nexus f.e.
One night, i had about 50% battery and fell asleep, than get up before morning and discovered, that phone is very HOT and without energy! I think I read about this bug somewhere, but don't remember where. Anyway it happened only once and I installed an update from that time.
I didn't know how it goes, because immediately after first install of this ROM it offered me an update, but failed every time before download completed. So I waited some time and finally this week downloaded latest version via update notification, did backup for sure and then installed it. It switch off and then boot into TWRP and did installation, everything alone without any interaction needed.
Then booted (quiet long for the first time) and that's all.
Maybe there is something more, I will let you know, when I remember.
