Copying EXT3 partitions across SD cards??

Can anybody tell me if there is any way of co-copying the EXT3 partition from one SD Card to another using a PC?
I currently have a 16G card and use a cooked rom with A2SD but wish to use a 32G card and want to copy all my A2SD installed apps across so changing the card is seamless.
Also one other question, if a format the card in FAT32 using a PC, will that remove the EXT partition?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers
Jason
eazy mode, create a nandroid backup + ext. copy it to your pc put in bigger SD copy nandroid on it and do a nandroid restore.

thanks for the advice, that should come handy sooner or later
Or if you have a Linux Live CD lying around then you can just mount your sd card in Linux and it will mount FAT32 and also EXT partition so you can just copy the contents.
You have a choice of methods although Nandroid is the most obvious choice. Nandroid. Copy sd fat32 part contents to pc then copy to new card. Nandroid restore.
Install clockwork recovery and make a backup, then insert your new SD , create a Ext3 partition using clockwork recovery. Copy your backup from the old to the new card and then Use unrevoked recovery to restore the Ext3 partition.

Thanks for all the advice, haven’t used nandroid backup yet but have ClockworkMod Recovery flashed so will give it a go!

Use ROM manager and select partition sd card.
Easiest way imo ;D

This does not work. I did what you said, but when I do a nandriod restore it gets to the bit of restoring the ext3 partition and then states that the partition does not exist and so skips it.
I think I would be able to use titanium back up to restore my apps but I can’t create an ext3 partition on my new card. The custom rom I am using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741663 wont boot with out an ext3 partition and the only way I know of creating an ext3 partition is though rom manager which requires the phone to be booted
So I am stuck?
You will likely have to create the ext partition first in linux. Try parted magic live cd, clockwork puts it at the end of the card, not sure why but best to stick with that just in case.

I can never get this to work, it always says I need root privlidges to write to the new cards ext partition, and it's anyones guess to what the root password is with these Live CD's.

generally there isnt one, and if there is it would probably be "toor" (root backwards).
if you want root privelages in the file explorer what i usually do is type "sudo nautilus" from terminal (on ubuntu).
but i would just use gparted to copy both ext and fat partitions to the new sd, then expand the fat partition if the sdcard is bigger.

Fat partition has to be first, otherwise windows can't read the card. It is confused by ext which it doesn't understand.
Guess how I know ;-)

[Q] HTC Desire bricked?

Hey guys,
I decided to root my HTC desire today but I got a problem. I used this tutorial: http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/20/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-unrevoked-method/
Then I tried to load up this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988570
It said the installation was successful but I am unable to boot up the device now (stuck on the screen where it says 'HTC' in green).
Any help would be appreciated.
First of all try shutting it down and turn it on by holding down vol-down and pressing power while keeping vol-down pressed. This will make your phone enter fastboot. In this menu you use the volume keys and power to chose recovery.
From here you just flash another rom like leedroid(just for now).
And no it's in no way bricked. The reason the rom isn't booting is probably, because you need to make an ext-partition on your sd-card. you can do this from rommanager once you get it to boot again
Yes, I can see the clockwork mod menu.
Dont worry mate, it's not bricked, once you get the hang of it you will be changing ROM's daily =P.... just install another ROM and pay attention to the partitions each ROM require
Did you reformat SD card to have FAT32 + 1GB+ ext3/ext4 partition?
And no its not bricked.. you cannot brick anything just by flashing ROM's its not that easy.
You either flashed CM7 version (you need custom HBOOT and S-OFF for that) or you didnt partitioned SD card.
Just wipe everything and try again.
Look at my reply again edited it, as i didn't read all the way through at first.

Not correct the hboot is not required, and the only difference is a larger data-partition, which allows for more user installed apps You are right about the ext-partition though, as this is very likely the problem in this case.

Backup your data from SD Card. (it will be wiped)
Enter Recovery.
Go Advanced/Partition SD Card.
Choose 1024MB Ext partition size, and 0 for swap. (you dont need that)
Now wipe everything, from the phone (data/factory reset and cache wipe)
Go mounts & storage and mount USB.
Now you can restore your files from PC to SD Card and Flash ROM.
Enjoy.
And if you want RcMixS 2.0, download this: http://rom.robocik.mobi/Desire/RCMixS/v2.0/RCMixS_v2.0_A2SD+_BravoHboot.zip
Do not download CM7 Version. ;-)

I don't see the partition SD card option. The only options in the advanced menu are:
- Reboot Recovery
- Wipe Dalvik Cache
- Wipe Battery Stats
- Report Error
- Key Test
- Restart adbd
- Process dump
Damn you must have some old version, then partition your card just anywhere (im doing it on Ubuntu using gParted)
Just make sure to make 2 partitions:
Primary FAT32 - all available space (-1024MB)
Primary EXT3/4 - 1024MB
Remember Ext partition has to be second partition after FAT32.

Okay thanks a lot. Now I only need to find a way to partition an SD card on a mac.
Download rom manager to make your cwm recovery do it. (cwm does have the tools for it, they are just no present in the interface)
It only allows for 512mb ext though, but usually it's enough.
RCMixS 2.0 requires 1GB+.

Im returning this sd card and getting a class 6 or 10 one
Hi Guys,
I too just bought a new 16gb Class 4 SD card today and want to upgrade.
I currently have a 4gb with 512mb EXT3 partition, Clockwork recovery, Insertcoin 1.0.8, S-ON - all working great (except 512mb is full).
Based on your experiences if I have no SD card reader should I do the following:
- Full Nandroid Backup on phone
- SD Fat32 backup to PC
- Switch off phone and insert new 16gb card
- Boot into HBOOT and wait for USB mode
- Boot my Linux USB drive into Gparted
- Create FAT32 and EXT3 parition (should 1.5gb be enough for EXT3?)
- Boot into recovery
- In advanced restore just restore the sd-ext portion in Nandroid to the new SD (is it issue EXT partition went from 512 to 1.5gb?)
- Boot phone?
- If issues swap back in original SD card and wipe sweat from brow
Many thanks for your help on this I am quite nervous about messing it up. I know there are many threads none none are clear on best method and many require card reader.
Thanks
Bridgstfer
Buy a card reader for future use...
all you need to do is -
Nandroid backup
Format your new sd card to what ever you like... Fat 32 1gb ext for example
Transfer all from old card to new card
Insert new Sd
advanced restore ext only
Done
Thanks.
Oh i think I forgot a step - obviously to do the restore with the new card I will need to boot windows again and copy the backup file to the FAT32 partition again (with phone still in HBOOT USB mode).
If I do the transfer your way how can I copy everything from old card to new card in windows or Ubuntu without card reader? Cant seem to mount the EXT in Ubuntu when plugged in through the phone.
While using old card transfer files to PC
Swap cards
Transfer files from PC to new sd
'Cant seem to mount the EXT in Ubuntu when plugged in through the phone' - Buy a card reader there better to use and very cheap
Worked - now upgraded to fresh 16gb SD using method from other thread! Now running 1gb EXT partition will all my apps installed + flash + other ones i couldnt install before and still have 90mb left on internal

[Q] Help!!!

I was getting ready to install a new rom and using CWR performed a wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache and a format system. I accidentally went into partition SD card and instead of hitting the back button hit the go. Now my phone only goes to first white screen "HTC Incredible" and stays stuck on that screen. I am able to boot into bootloader and recovery but cant recover any backups "no files found". Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Partitioning the SD card formats it, do you keep backups of your SD card on your computer hopefully?

Don't have a micro sd card reader but will get one to see whats going on.
Im interested to know how partitioning the sdcard would make the phone get stuck at the htc splash? I have partitioned my sd several times before, it does format the sd but has never made it so i cant boot the phone.
EDIT: Alao you cant remove a ext partition by just formating in windows, as windows only sees the fat32 partition. To remove it go back to recovery and the partition sd. When you select it it should ask you 2 things, ext size and swap size.
Use the trackball to set both ext and swap to 0, leaving the whole sd to be formated fat32. After you do that see if you can boot.
I have done this too but good thing I had another SD card with a Rom on it or other wise I would have been screwed

Not sure why its getting stuck on splash screen. It was my first time partitioning my sd card. I tried installing a zip from sd card and none found. I also tried to nandroid restore and no file found. I will try to remove the partition and see if that works.

Sounds like your only option is to redo a wipe data/factory reset, format boot, and format system again, to be safe, then copy a new ROM zip to your SD card and flash that.
Your nandroids, and everything on your SD card, are gone.

there is a clockwork folder on your sd card that is used if you updated clockworkmod recovery from rom manager. i mad the mistake of deleting it once. i had a backup on my pc before i did it. if you can get the phone to boot then just click the first option in rom manager and it will re build the file.
You don't need an SD card reader if you can get to CWM. Just go to mounts and mount Your SD card with your USB cable attached to your PC.

[Q] Partition SD

Hi guys
I have root my phone and install
clockwork mode recovery 2.5.1.8
&
LeeDroid ROM file named "LeeDrOiD_V2.5.0_A2SD_FINAL.zip"
and all of this work perfect .
then i open rom manger because i want to partition my 8GB sd
after i flash my recovery i select
partition SD (Ext size 512M) & (Swap size 32M) then it go to recovery
and i have this error "please open rom manager to report the issue"
and i re partition sd by rom manger and i have seam error
after this i let Rom Manger behind me and i go to recovery
Advance>partition SD card>2028M>32M .. .. ..
after done i open the system>Sitting>SD&phone storge
SD total space is 6GB 8-2 for partition=6
Total internal phone storage is 186M in "Disk Usage"App
but i but 2GB partition !!!
i but 4GB partition to check ... same proplime 186M
i hear some people seas install "Data2SDInstallerX1" i try it but after i install it
when i turn my phone on its hold in htc logo
now i re install Lee Droid rom and the rom is work, but partition proplime steel here
pls i need help
Hi did you try redo it with gparted? or flash better recovery to setup partitions on your sd card... some rom are not showing all space from ext partition... BTW why you have swap? instruction saying 0 MB for swap
Its working correctly, the 183Mb free space will decrease slowly but it is using the 2Gb ext partition for app storage. Also, you don't need a swap partition. My advice is to start again, either do a backup, repartition your SD card with 1Gb ext and 0 swap and then restore or just do the partitioning and flash the ROM from scratch.
