Repairing my One X - HTC One X

Hi,
I was browsing the net with my one x one evening when the screen went blank, the phone froze for 10 seconds the switched off, since then the device has been dead, and when plugged in to the P.C it shows the connected One X as APX, I have attempted to use APX to try recover the device but to no avail, in the meantime I have managed to get another One X that I will not be rooting!!!!
So my question is, does anyone know what might need repairing, I am guessing it may be the display adapter, but not sure. If I replace the mainboard, is that likely to solve whatever the problem may be i.e. GPU, Processor, Memory ect... or is it possible that there could be a problem elsewhere?
Finally how much is it likely to cost to replace the mainboard? and where can I get one at a reasonable price? would it already have a bootloader on the mainboard or would it need flashing separately?

bump

Don't try to repair it yourself. You still have warranty. Just call HTC and they'll help you to get it repaired.

I no longer have warranty with HTC, the phone is rooted and I have actually opened it up now so the warranty if definitively void now. I have a new HTC One X which I must admit is better build quality and battery life, but I want to see if I can repair the faulty phone

I've had hardware problems and got them fixed under warranty (new motherboard), despite a rooted phone that I also opened myself.
Just give it a try with HTC.
If you're lucky HTC will fix it and that won't cost you anything. In the worst case they'll tell you it won't be warranty and you'll have to pay for the diagnosis and you get get it back without repairs (and try yourself), or choose to pay full price for the repair...

[Q] Desire HD - Motherboard failure

Hello,
I have a HTC Desire HD that has just died on me, it just stopped detecting the SIM car. Everything else works just fine.
Gave it to HTC service here in India and they gave me a quote of 13000 INR ($260) to replace it. Since its out of warranty (15 days over) I'll have to bear the expense.
Now I got this phone for 25000 INR($500) it makes no sense to go for this replacement. Now my dilema here is what more can I do with this phone besides using it as a glorifed paper weight
I doubt root it would solve this issue. But would love to hear from you.
Kind regards
I'd just went out of the similar problem. One day my DHD turn off and... That's all ! It just turn of and never came back. I'd to send it to HTC support, they return it to me saying something like "we changed the motherboard".
Now I think "Whatdafuck is this phone whitch can die one day without any aparent reason !!". At it's next death I'll get a Motorola.

Atleast you were lucky that you device was under warranty. I am well and truly screwed.
cheers
Personally, I'd get it repaired, since you could easily get another years' use out of it (more, but other devices will start to make it look old).
That would then work out at $20/month, compared to say $40 ($500/12 months) for a new phone, even via an operator's subsidy.
I'd also let HTC do it so that they can respond directly, should anything go wrong.
Sorry I saw you replied.
If you pay the HTC support can repair your phone.

I would try to buy very cheap non working phone with broken digitizer or similar - many people (at least in europe) sell their phones when they are broken and get new ones. And I would change the mainboard myself. its not that difficult. Ive done it with my old htc topaz...
Suffering at the hands of HTC
Last week, my 1.5 years old Desire 816 was working absolutely flawlessly. 5 seconds later, I pick it up and it is dead! :crying:
The HTC Service Center guys are asking for Rs. 9,700 for changing the Motherboard and I am like WT*. I can buy a new phone at that price. A bit of research and find out that Motherboard issues are very common in HTC. This surely was my last HTC phone.
Now I have 2 questions:
1. Is there any way I can get this phone repaired in the open market?
2. I was using CDMA as my primary number. I am not finding any other reputed manufacturer who has CDMA smartphones. I am not willing to ditch CDMA as of now. Any suggestions for a good smartphone that is not HTC?

Repairing a hardware issue - No need to unroot? URGENT

My Desire's 24 month warranty expires the 14th of this month... Over the past 6 months or so i've noticed that the microUSB port has become so loose to the point that no cable I try stays in the port. So... I contacted HTC and arranged for a warranty repair.
They've told me UPS are coming to collect the phone tomorrow and I need to know whether or not my S-OFF, custom splash/bootanimation and custom ROM will make a difference when it comes to repair? In the phone's present state, running a RUU would be incredibly dangerous as the USB port is so loose that the cable could come out at any minute during the process.
That said, I don't see how they could possibly argue that customising a phone's software could lead to the USB port becoming faulty but I just need to ask for other people's experiences with hardware repairs.
Just check your policy. Mine states as long as the phone turns on they don't care what's on the phone. Just to be safe it's usually better to return to stock before sending it off.
Surely the warranty card is the exact same for all of Europe though?
To be sure... I downloaded the 2.3 RUU, extracted the ZIP and installed it by renaming it to PB99IMG.zip.
That "Quietly Brilliant" sound that plays during start up really brings back memories
If you flashed RUU successfully, HTC shouldn't have anything to complain about.
HTC want to charge me £70 to fix the phone or £23 to return it. Ridiculous, i'm not accepting anything but a repair or at the very least them returning my phone as it was.

[Q] Should i send for repair?

Hi
I am opening a thread to gauge general consensus as to whether or not i should send my device to HTC for repair.
After reading all the horror stories regarding HTC customer support i am a bit reluctant to send my device for its NFC to be repaired. I have unlocked the bootloader, now, relocked, and was wondering if HTC will honor the repair as warranty or whether they will try and charge me?
I tried sorting it through Phones4u but they just kept forwarding me to HTC.
ideally an exchange would have been awesome but ive had the handset 3months.
has anybody had any dealings with HTC after relocking their device and did they charge for a fix?
Thanks
Drew071
HTC can see your phone was unlocked and will probably charge you to repair it.
I wanted to sent my old Sensation back to remove some dust under the screen and because the software had been altered they would reset it back to stock and charge me £100 for the privilege!!
Although their disclaimer states that "some of your warranty may be void" I think they would argue that NFC was damaged due to the use of Custom Software....
If they can get out of fixing it for free, they will!!

What you should do is go back to Phones4U , quote the "Sales of Goods act" and point out that under that act they are responsible, especially for the first 6 months.
Read this
http://whatconsumer.co.uk/the-sale-of-goods-act/
and especially the next link which you can print and take along if they give you further hassle.
http://whatconsumer.co.uk/shops-responsibility/
The positive thing is that they are much more unlikely to check the bootloader as HTC.
Give them hell

HOX screen problem and repair

This is a couple of pic from my HOX that is faulty....i know theres afew people here that having the same screen problem as me and maybe not....the screen is glitching and sometimes blank but touchscreen still responsive....cause my warranty is void and i cant have a replacement, i want to make a repair at any phone shop that can repair it or if im brave enough, i do it myself...the cost in HTC center is expensive...what i want to know is, is the problem here is from the LCD display only and not on any other hardware...cause there is a LCD display with Digitizer that sell is cheaper than HTC center...and original..if i replace it, can the problem be solve...is it can be done...tq
At a guess I would say it's an issue with the memory holding the framebuffer, but it could be a problem with the bus connecting it to the screen.
Hard to say if a screen replacement would fix it.
If a stock ROM doesn't fix it, it's a hardware fault. That's usually covered under consumer protection laws. HTC are not obliged to uphold (or even provide) a warranty, but the retailer is obliged to honour your statutory rights.
Where did you purchase it?

Sounds serious....i have flash everything to stock using the right RUU and relocked the bootloader...when sending it to repair, they claim that i have rooted the device and warranty is void...when i said the cost of repair, they said its about RM500( around 150 USD )..and this is a lot...
I purchased my HOX in my country MALAYSIA, in 2nd hand market...the problem occur about a month of using....i received in perfect condition and LOCKED bootloader...
i hope this help, cause i really wanna get my HOX fix....
even i have the same problem.......it began shortly after the JB update...........i bought my phone from mobile store......but the warranty is given by HTC and i am afraid i also have voided my warranty by opening it and unlocking the bootloader...what to do ??
What i want to know is what causing this problem..if its like what BenPope said....is there a way to fix it....manually and cheaply.....
I have restored my stock backup and relocked the bootloader after that I did a hard reset.....after that no screen problem till now.....try it

I don't know what your hox problem but I know it is hardware faulty cuz I read a thread in XDA bout the same problem like yours but the solution is send to HTC and get replacement with new unit. So that won't help you I believe as you void your warranty.
You could try searching in lowyat forum and look for shop that provide repairs for HOX. If you live in KL, there is one shop around pandan indah that could replace your lcd+digitizer for below rm200 i think.

Same problem here..brief history of my One X
1. Phone is rooted, installed AOSP 4.2.2
2. I broke the screen last February and had it replaced (the center said its genuine HTC screen which they ordered from their contact from HTC, I've no way to check though but the quality is as good as the old one so no complaints there)
3. About a month ago, screen wont diplay when I unlock/wake..its just black but it can receive messages, play music etc..I can even answer calls (blind swipe of the screen to answer)
4. I gave up, and bought a new phone as I dont want to spend another S$200 bucks or so to repair it (initial screen replacement cost me S$240).But, out of curiosity, I booted it up last month (charged it to retrieve some pictures) and the display showed. The next morning, again it wont turn off.. As I have it encased in an otterbox commuter, I decided, WTH just do drop tests see if the otterbox was really able to protect.
After a few drops, I decided to wake the screen..And yes again it worked LOL
Now this on and off thing happens a lot..sometimes I'm able to wake it sometimes not (after a long period of the display being off)..
Just now, it wont turn on again, and again I dropped it face down (for the lulz) and the screen turned on again
here it is now, charging
One thing i noticed though, the screen would corrupt and lock up (sometimes) when I rotate screen to landscape
PS. damn this HTC One ultrapixel camera sucks

[Q] Capacitive buttons not working.

Hi everyone! My phone's capacitive buttons stopped working all of a sudden. I've tried everything including the factory reset, so obviously from what I've read it must be hardware problem. Would this problem have to do with the digitizer? Is there ANY way that this can be repaired? I would send it for repairs but it is rooted and I guess the warranty is voided. :crying:

If you have unlocked the bootloader the warranty is not void,
Email from HTC:
Thank you for your email regarding your HTC One X.
My name is Ozgur and I'm the technical customer service support for the HTC Mail Team.
If the error of the device is not the direct result of unlocking the bootloader or placing a custom ROM, then the device just repaired under warranty. This has always been HTC policy.
HTC normally rejects an unlocked device for warranty if the error of the device is the direct result of unlocking the bootloader or placing a custom ROM. If the warranty has been rejected before, and the fault is an unlock or custom rom, we do not expect that the decision will be different now. We can say that with certainty, however, only if we have inspected the device in our repair center.
So.. you can either flash a ROM to try and see if the hardware is faulty, or just send it in for repair.

Yes, a digitizer replacement will solve the problem. I assume you've fixed it or moved on by now. For whomever else, the digitizer piece can be purchased on ebay for 40-45 dollars. There are youtube videos explaining how to disassemble the phone for the digitizer replacement. Good luck to all.

I haven't fixed it yet since I never got an answer, I've just been using an app called Button Savior which are on screen buttons but I'm not satisfied with them, but now that I know its the digitizer I will try and do it, although I'm scared I might mess up. Is there anyone that can do it for me?

Go to Craigslist for your city. There are people who will do this for $80 or so for this phone. And of course you can always use Google to find shops you can ship to. If you're good with your hands, the Youtube videos give a decent enough tutorial for a careful novice to complete the repair.
