Is it useful or bad to format the internal storage with NTFS?
or better which file system is recommended?
I don't think android will read NTFS but I maybe wrong.
The recommended is FAT32 with 32 kb (Alocation unit size)
You are correct. However android will not read the partition if you format it ntfs. One of 2 things will happen
1. It will tell you it needs to be formatted and won't let you use it otherwise
2. It will just format it back to fat32 on its own

I formatted my internal storage drive on my htc droid incredible to ntfs (comes with 8gb internal flash and 2gb external microsd)
I did this with windows However once you un-mount you will not be able to get into it in windows or your android os afterwards leaving you with minimal storage space left on your internal flash. SO DO NOT FORMAT ANYTHING INTERNAL TO NTFS I still have not been able to recover the space to use it. if anyone knows how shoot me a pm. this is more of a waring do not do than a request for help.
You should be able to reformat it back to default using recovery on phone

I was using gparted to give myself some more ext3 space on my 16gb microsd card and I may have unplugged / unmounted my phone or something so the partitioning failed. gparted (and other programs) now only see 12gb of space on the card. Is there anything I can do to recover the 4gb?
Have you tried to delete all the partitions and fully format the sd card?

Yeh, still 12gb.
And if you put your sdcard in a cardreader on a pc or laptop and run a tool like partition wizzard (or Something similar) is there a partition that says unallocated space ?

I did this once as well
open the card up with Gparted again, delete all the partitions, unmount then remount the card, and you should have the full size in unallocated memory.
Hey guys just got my Galaxy Nexus for Verizon. It obv does not come with an SD card, something I am not accustomed to.
I am wondering if there is some way to maybe partition the internal memory so when doing wipes and installing roms, that partition of memory is not affected.
Thanks for any help!
Doing wipes and rom installs doesn't affect the sdcard, only the internal memory that holds the os/apps gets wiped, so there's no need to partition anything. Its only when you format the sdcard is when you lose everything on it.

I think he's asking if there is a way to make the internal memory set up to have a portion of it look like an external ad card... ie splitting the partition one says internal memory the second would be fake sdcard memory

If virtual sdcard had its own partition it would theoretically then be possible to treat it as a real usb mass storage device like a real sdcard.

Hi,
just installed ics last night and one by one the errors are showing themselves. I didnt post this in the FAQ because it might not be related to there. Now, my phone wont recognize my ex_SD!! It says the SD is damaged, you might have to format it. I formatted it, turned out it formatted my internal SD leaving my external SD untouched.
The external SD works perfectly fine when i connect it to windows, but my phone wont mount it.
Can it be because of the format method? First i formatted with NTFS, now im formatting with FAT32 and allocation Unit Size of 16 KB. If formatting isnt the problem then perhaps its a bug or smth from ics.
Try you SD on a different phone.

You should never format your External SD as NTFS; Linux does not support NTFS. At least not natively. Android *definitely* doesn't.
Format it as FAT32 with *Default* allocation unit size (Windows will determine what the correct size is by reading from the SD card controller).
You might also need to partition it before you format it. Use the freely available MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition, and create one primary partition (of type FAT32).

Thankyou. I now have my SD card back. and now it is displayed on my phone as well. Seems that i have very low experience on ics which caused the prblm.
Thankyou very much

Hello everyone, I know this thread is already present and I also red the info regarding with it, but it seems my problem is something I can't solve with the help of those previous instructions. I have an I idea how to solve it but I'm hesitant to do it because I don't know if it works, and I kinda scared to do it because I don't want to buy again another SD Card if ever the present one will break.
Problem: I have a torrent app in my Note II and I liked to use it always because it downloads fast, but the problem is that whenever I want to download files that is more than 4GB in size, I always receive an error that the file I want to download is to big for the file system; (file system limit exceeded), and I learned that this error occurs when my storage system is FAT/FAT32, then I read a thread in this forum that this will be solved by converting my SD Card's file system to NTFS and use Paragon NTFS Mount app so that my NTFS Card will be accepted by my phone, alas I did as what was instructed, converted my SD Card to NTFS, mount my card to storage/sdCard/extcard <---Created another path as it was said that using the default path would make it not work. But when I re-started to download files it fails to me again, the same problem encountered (file system limit exceeded). I even converted my SD card to exFat because I heard that this can handle large files, more than 4GB but also to no avail.
Solution(not tested yet): I am planning to make 2 partitions in my SD card, one partition would be fat32 and the other would be NTFS, and use also paragon app, so that when I insert my card to my phone, the phone will mount the FAT system to the fat32 partition and leave the NTFS partition alone and not be used.
Does this method of mine will work? Are there any ideas aside from what I had in mind that will also help me solve my little problem. I know that this problem of mine is not that big, and I can just refer it to other threads and the google but I want to know from the pro's and OP's here if my method is possible.
Thank you!
Kudos to all!:good:

You need to define a mount point like sdcard0 is internal sd sdcard1 is external sd fat32 partition sdcard2 as the ntfs partition which is really hard to do on a samsung based rom (even windows doesnt recognize the second partition on sd cards ) you can format the sd to ext3 or ext4 it's the best possible solution

I see, too bad, but thanks any way. Does the procedure in formatting my sd card to ext3 or ext4 is the same as when I format my card to fat32 other system, or would you use a program to do it.
Why are you using Fat32 or NTFS just format the SD card to ExFAT. No size limit and compatible with Note2 & Windows
I think the problem you are having is due to the torrent app you are using, it might be trying to use the internal phone memory as a temporary location for the file you are downloading. Try changing your torrent app
(I had this problem with the official utorrent app)
whats up guys?
So i just bought a 128GB USB C thumb drive. when i insert it into my pixel, it gives me the option to format it as internal storage or as portable storage. if i format it as portable storage, i can not download movies and shows from google play movies and netflix to it. the only way i can do that is to format it as internal. once formatted as internal, i can not insert it into any other device including my PC without having it have to reformat. is there a way to edit the partition it creates to half the size once its formatted on my phone as internal? this way i can plug it into a PC and still use it as a thumb drive? ive been playing around with EaseUS and have not gotten windows to recognize it once modified. anyone got anything?
ok so no matter how i edit partitions after android creates them, they get corrupt and i have to reformat it. now the other thing i tried it to partition the usb drive into 2 64GB partitions. android sees this as 2 partitions and allows me to select which partition i want to format as internal storage or portable storage. if i select the first partition, or the second, it does not matter, android will format the entire drive and use the full 128GB for the phone rather than the 64GB partition. so now my question is, is there a way to "trick" android into thinking its only a 64GB thumb drive so i can later format the second partition and have windows recognize it as a separate 64GB drive?

What file format are you formatting the drive to? Have you tried formatting it in Windows exFAT and then using a decent file manager with OTG support like Solid Explorer? Are you using the stock kernel or custom? Sorry, I don't have a USB-C thumb drive.
I was formatting it to exfat I'm windows. Both partitions. When inserted into my phone andoid says that it is unusable and needs to be formatted. So I click on the first partition and format it as internal. Android reformats the entire drive. Not just the first partition.
If I format it as fat32, Android just reconizes it as a portable thumb drive. I can't change anything about it or format it as internal
This is on pure stock Android and kernel. I'm not rooted.
